Later date looms for fishing event
• By Sophie Cornish
THE ANNUAL Take a Kid
Fishing event at the Groynes
lakes may be saved.
However, the October event
could be pushed back into late
November or December this
year.
There were fears the event
could be cancelled due to
rapid growth of the lagarosiphon
weed.
City council
regional parks
manager Kay
Holder has
recommended
two options
involving

chemical
control to the
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board, to minimise
the problem.
“The reasons for the rapid
growth are not well understood
but the warm summer and high
nutrient flow into the lakes
could be the cause . . . at this
stage it is proposed that further
on-going chemical control of the
lake weed will be the most effective
method for management,”
said Ms Holder.

fishing cannot take place for six
weeks afterwards.
Event organiser David Denton
said the event can work with the
new dates, if a commitment is
made by city council to control
the weed.
The Take A Kid Fishing event
has been held at the Groynes annually
since 1988.
About five to six thousand
people attend it each year.
Previously the Isaac Conservation
and Wildlife Trust has
donated 800 salmon which are
released into the lake.
Volunteers show the children
how to catch a salmon, clean it
and prepare it for cooking.
It is unclear how effective the
chemical control could be.
“There will still be some
uncertainly on the effectiveness
of the control as it depends on

The large quantity of weed
means that if pulled out, it
will regrow and potentially

“There are concerns that mechanical

the weed problem,” said Ms
Holder.

The master bedroom has an ensuite, and there are two other bedrooms upstairs along with
the main bathroom facilities, which are separated into 3 rooms, making it a practical and

Mr Inglis said the group started
a conversation three years ago
with local sporting and community
groups.
“There’s been a really positive
response to it. A lot of sports are
competing for court space at the
moment.”
Mr Inglis said the facility would
be similar to the Edgar Centre in
Dunedin.
“You will find around the country,
particularly in Wellington,
Auckland and in Dunedin with
the Edgar Centre, the participation
and growth rates in the sport
are far higher . . . in sports such
as netball, futsal and basketball
when you have indoor facilities.”
Mr Inglis said the facility would
“complement” the proposed
Metro Sports Facility planned for
the central city.
“We see this as complementary
to MSF, as a community-based
sports centre. It’s also decentralised.
We will have 450 car parks in
the Papanui area, which I think it
is a lot easier to manage than 400
car parks in the centre of the city.”
He believes even with the development
nine indoor courts for
MSF, there will still be “a shortfall
in the capacity for indoor courts.”
“Our understanding is that
from netball alone, there is a need
for 18-20 indoor courts.”

was like, what?”
But when he crossed the line,
Finnian had raised $1568 for
the trust. He said he was “really
happy” with the total.
“By doing this I have learnt
that you can do things for charity,
I feel proud that I raised all
that money and I learnt that people
were happy to help me raise
money for charity. I am confident
now in running 6km and I
am more confident in speaking

Finnian has already decided

WATER PUMP: An artist’s impression of the city council’s
preferred design and location for the Jeffreys pump station.
More feedback sought
on Jeffreys pump station
THE SECOND round of
consultation has opened for the
pump station suction tank in
Jeffreys Reserve after residents
were unhappy with previous
designs.
Feedback from the October
2017 consultation resulted in
a further investigation of eight
potential location options,
which were then independently
peer reviewed.
The $2.5 million project
is required to replace the
earthquake-damaged tank
which supplies water to the
north-west of Christchurch.
City council has revealed
it prefers option two, which
includes the new tank next
to the existing re-clad pump
station.
This may result in savings in
energy use and pump upgrades
because the pump station and
suction tank would be in close
proximity. Its visual effects
may also be reduced as the
height of the tank will be 4m
above ground and 50cm below
ground.
The project is now expected to
be completed in December next
year instead of June, city council
manager land drainage Keith
Davison said.
The plans were changed by
the city council after neighbours
of the reserve expressed concern
with the concept designs.
“Key concerns and
suggestions from the have your
say engagement carried out in
September and October were
the height of the tank and the
affect on neighbours, security
issues, visual impacts, use of
existing site, consideration for
other locations and lowering of
tank height,” Mr Davison said.
The consultation will close on
May 14.

from the local community.
Now in its sixth year, the
garden is a great place to learn
about gardening, get fresh
vegetables and herbs, and meet
up with friends and neighbours.
Everyone is welcome to participate
from the novice to the
experienced gardener, from those
who can ‘supervise’ to those who
can dig, weed and water.
Our working bees, held on
Saturday mornings, provide a
time to get your hands dirty as
well as an opportunity to mingle,
chat, share food, and build connections
together to learn and be
part of a community.
Our raised beds near the
playground contain a range of
seasonal vegetables that are available
for anyone to harvest. This
year our tomatoes, bok choy and
pak choi grew especially well.
The community garden provides
an opportunity for children
and families to learn how to grow
vegetables under the watchful eye
of experienced gardeners. This
can lead you to be bitten by the
“gardening bug” and start your
own garden.
We want the Bryndwr Community
Garden to continue to
be a place which enhances community
well-being and brings
people together, as well as being a
community focal point for events
and activities, a place of learning

and sharing skills and a garden
that reflects sustainable and environmental

While this sounds like a tall
order, with our team of dedicated
volunteers and links with the
wider community, we do our
best to achieve this – but we need
your help. We are always looking
for more people to be involved
either through participating at
the working bees, being on the

THREE MAJOR Edgeware
roads could have additional
lanes added in a bid to manage
increased traffic from the
Northern Corridor.
The city council has
proposed an upgrade plan for
Cranford St and the surrounding
area to reduce traffic on
smaller side streets coming off
the motorway.
Plans include adding third
lanes on Forfar, Madras and
Barbadoes Sts between Warrington
St and Bealey Ave and a
clearway on part of Cranford St
from Innes Rd to Berwick St.
“A clearway on part of Cranford
St and three-laning sections
of Madras/Forfar St and Barbadoes
St would help to improve
the traffic flow in the area and
minimise short cuts through local
streets,” a city council report
said.
The additional lanes and clearway
would involve taking away
on-street parking.
“Investigations we have done
show that local streets will be
affected in the morning and
evening peak periods if no road
improvements are made. The

Nearly 800
trees planted
by community
THE FIRST native-tree
planting in Papanui Bush began
on Friday in what Papanui-
Innes Commuity Board
member John Stringer called “a
really historical moment.”
The bush once took up 36-ha
of land that is now Papanui
High School and Vagues Rd in
1850.
During this time, most trees
were felled over a period of five
to six years.
On Friday, about 100 people
planted almost 800 trees,
including totara, in the north
and south end of Bridgestone
Reserve on Langdons Rd.
Mr Stringer said the day was
“really successful.”
Groups involved in the
planting included Papanui
High School, the Rotary Club
of Papanui and members from
the Northcity Church and the
Papanui Baptist Church.
The Papanui-Innes
Community Board was also
involved, including city
councillors Pauline Cotter and
Mike Davidson.
Mr Stringer said there
has been even more interest
from local businesses and
community groups for the next
planting, which will take place
in June.
Petition to change schools’ zones
• By Sophie Cornish
“HAVEN’T OUR kids lost
enough to the quake already?”
That’s the message on signs
displayed in Richmond and
Shirley, calling for Avonside
Girls’ and Shirley Boys’ High
School to include the suburbs in
its new home enrolment zone.
Residents of the suburbs
have delivered 3000 leaflets to
surrounding areas and gathered
more than 1300 signatures on
a petition, calling for people to
submit feedback to the schools
and the Ministry of Education.
The two schools will relocate
to the new shared campus at QE
II Park next year and have been
required to develop a new zone
by the secretary of education.
The board of trustees from
both schools opened a consultation
document online at the
end of March, which closed on
Thursday.
The document included a ‘draft
zone’ which featured suburbs
Burwood, Parklands, New
Brighton, South Brighton and
Southshore, which is supported
by the MoE.
The Marshland area was featured
on the document as a ‘grey
zone’, meaning it was an area the
schools wish to have included in
the zone.
The suburbs of Richmond,
Shirley, Dallington, Avonside and
Edgeware were not included at all.
Richmond resident
Laura McIntosh said she is
disappointed.
“Everyone is feeling pretty sad
about it. We had no idea this was
going to happen. The first we
heard that we weren’t going to be
included was when the two schools
posted on their Facebook page.
She said there is “a general feeling
of abandonment.”

“We have kids from broken
primary schools, broken areas,
and terrible streets, so much unknown
. . . it’s really upsetting.”
Other signs put up also read
“how come areas with no historical
connections to our school are
in, but we are left out in the cold?”
and “don’t abandon our kids.”
Four public meetings were
held with both schools’ board of
trustees and principals.
“There were no MoE representatives
at the meetings at all,
it was really disappointing. They
didn’t get to gauge the feeling of
the room, how upset we were,”
said Mrs McIntosh.
Ministry of Education deputy
secretary sector enablement and
support Katrina Casey said it was
“not appropriate” to have a representative
at the meetings.
“Because school boards lead
the consultation process with
their communities.”

HOME & HEATING
NOR’WEST NEWS
Get rid of
dampness
in your house
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm and
healthy for their families throughout winter.
Rising damp is an issue that affects many of
our older properties which suffer from poor, or
no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, postquake,
many people have relocated to homes
that suffer from rising damp which can be
associated with health problems. Independent
tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can
rise from the ground and enter a house every
day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation
and musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and very
young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home. Specially adapted for our
New Zealand conditions and applications
it provides a layer of protection against
rising moisture. An unexpected benefit that
the team at Canterbury Foam Concrete
have noticed recently, is that many owners
of properties which had underfloor foam
concrete installed, reported that it also
provided protection against liquefaction after
the earthquakes.
Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd
now for your free, no obligation quote and
complimentary appraisal of your underfloor
ventilation needs. Phone 03 376 4608 or
0508 362626 for more information.
Choosing the
right heat pump
for your home
Whether it be a new build, or
a retrofit, most homes include
at least one heat pump, if not a
whole heating solution. They can
provide cheap, clean heat and are
much more convenient than a log
burner as you just need to press
a button. But how do you decide
what is best? Choosing the right
sized heat pump is key to ensuring
optimum comfort levels. Every
situation varies and it is therefore
important to get professional
advice from heat pump experts.
The range varies from wall mounted high
walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems,
ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted
central heating systems allowing you to have a
very discreet way of heating your whole home
to a constant temperature throughout.
Firstly, you must select a heat pump that
is suitable for the size of the space you wish
to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to
ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area
taken into consideration but also, insulation,
building orientation, windows and ceiling
space. There are a wide range of heat pumps
available with different heating outputs so it is
important to select
the correct size for
Heating is a major
investment in your home
and it is vital to get the
right advice.
your requirements
that will handle
the job but not
be unnecessarily
overpowered.
Secondly, the
location of your
heat pump is also extremely important. The
cheapest installation is a back to back where
the outdoor unit is positioned directly behind
the indoor unit however this is not necessarily
always the best option. It is vital that the indoor
unit is positioned in a place that will not be
constantly blowing on you. Also important, is
the location of the outdoor unit. Most people
do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly
in their outdoor entertaining area or right
outside their bedroom window.
Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands
have come and gone over the years but there
are a number of manufacturers who provide
reputable and reliable products. All brands vary
in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems
and price, so it depends on your application as
to which will be most suitable. Major brands
such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin,
Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands
backed up by good technical after sales service.
Ensure your heat pump is installed by an
accredited installer. This will not only ensure
correct installation of your heat pump, but also
validate the manufacturers warranty.
Other things to consider when choosing a
heat pump are time
clocks, ease of use of
the remote controllers,
air filtration and also
wifi capabilities.
Heating is a major
investment in your
home and it is vital to
get the right advice.
Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply,
installation and servicing of all major brands
of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers
ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as
to which system will suit your application
the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no

HOME & HEATING
Fresh air
in your home
All houses require air exchange in order
to stay fresh and dry. No one likes to live
in a stuffy, smelly, damp home. Indoor air
quality is important for the health of the
occupants. Houses can have many sources of
contaminants, such as bathrooms, kitchens,
pets, smokers, and even furnishings. Opening
the windows can refresh the air, but is not
always an option for security reasons and can
also lead to heat energy being lost to outside.
Although older houses have small gaps
around windows and doors, you want to be
able to control the flow of air. You don’t want
air coming in to the bathroom or kitchen and
pushing the soiled air around the house. It
is better to expel the air out of kitchens and
bathrooms to outside. This will draw air in
from the rest of the house to replace the air that
has been removed.
Modern houses are very airtight and
theoretically require a source of incoming air
to allow kitchen and bathroom extraction to
work optimally. Ventilation systems should be
low air velocity and low air pressure so as not
to cause draughts.
There are two main types of ventilation
system: Positive pressure and Balanced
pressure. Positive pressure systems, such as the
Dry-Matic, bring filtered, warmed attic air into
the house, which then percolates through the
rooms, pushing the damper stale air out.
Balanced pressure systems bring in a
similar amount of air to the amount they
exhaust. Balanced pressure systems with Heat
Exchange, such as the HEX390, use the heat
of the outgoing air to warm the incoming
air from outside. These are the most energy
efficient systems available, as they recover up
to 80% of the energy in the air, rather than
losing it to outside. Heat exchangers work just
as well cooling incoming air when the house is
cooled in summer.
The NZ building code has recommended
air exchange rates for houses. To ascertain
the required airflow for your home, please
contact Smooth-Air on 0800 SMOOTH
(0800 766 684), who will also be able to
recommend a solution if your ventilation
doesn’t yet meet the New Zealand standard.
