THE WILMETTE BEACON
Pearce to fill vacant seat
on Wilmette Village Board
A Wilmette Village
Board trustee seat has been
vacant for the last two
months after Trustee Steve
Leonard resigned at the end
of February.
But that will soon change
as Leonard’s replacement
will be sworn in at the next
board meeting. Village
President Bob Bielinski announced
the appointment
of former Village Trustee
George Pearce to the position
at the Village Board’s
Tuesday, April 24 meeting.
The board will vote to approve
this appointment at
the Tuesday, May 8 meeting
and Pearce will be
sworn in at that time. Upon
Leonard’s resignation on
Feb. 24, Bielinski had 60
days to appoint an individual
to fill Leonard’s vacancy.
With that two-month period
now coming to an end, Bielinski
appointed Pearce to
fill Leonard’s vacancy.
“We are short one trustee
right now, which will be
remedied at the next meeting,”
Bielinski said. “I’m
pleased to announce at this
meeting my appointment of
Mr. Pearce. The board will
be asked to approve that
appointment at our next
meeting and Mr. Pearce
will be seated at our next
meeting.”
Pearce has served the
Village government in
the following capacities:
Zoning Board of Appeals
from 1994 to 1997, Village
Board Trustee from 1997-
2005 and Board of Police
and Fire Commissioners
from 2005 to 2014. In addition
to his service with
the Village government,
Pearce is an active member
of the community.
THE NORTHBROOK TOWER
Village honors Exact Blade
with inaugural Green
Business Award
Just a few days after
Earth Day and Arbor Day
festivities took place at the
Village Green, the Northbrook
Village Board recognized
a local business
with the Village’s inaugural
Green Business Award.
The award is intended to
be given to a business that
has taken steps to reduce its
impact on the environment.
Exact Blade, located at 813
Waukegan Road in Northbrook,
which offers cutlery
and knife sharpening services,
took home the award
for its green efforts.
Exact Blade received
a unanimous nod for the
award from the Environmental
Quality Commission,
which reviewed applications
for the honor during
its March meeting.
The board passed a
resolution recognizing the
Northbrook business for the
award during its Tuesday,
April 24 regular meeting.
“Following a review of
the applications, the Commission
unanimously recommended
Exact Blade,
Inc. as the winner of the
2018 Green Business
Award for its recycling efforts
of paper, the reuse
of iron and steel byproduct
materials in gardening
from their knife sharpening
operations, and their reuse
of office furnishings,” the
resolution said.
“These actions have diverted
waste from landfills
and serve as a good example
of ways to reduce a
business’ impact on the environment.”
NATIONAL
THE HIGHLAND PARK LANDMARK
Water in City buildings
meets lead level standard
After 11 fixtures in
Highland Park City-owned
buildings testing above
federal standards for lead
in July 2017, the City has
finally mitigated lead levels
in its buildings.
According to a press
release, the City has mitigated
the lead levels in all
buildings that registered
high lead levels in potable
water.
“The City is dedicated to
taking this proactive step
on an annual basis to protect
the health and safety
of our residents. This sets
a high standard for others
who provide water to the
public,” Mayor Nancy Rotering
said in the release.
“Safe drinking water is essential
to our health.”
The use of lead in
plumbing materials was
only outlawed in 1986, so
structures built before then
could contain lead piping.
