The restrictions depend on the size of doors required. We sell timber, aluminium and composite (PVC) doors, but if you are building an extension I would only recommend aluminium because that is going to give you the slimmest sight lines and it doesn’t contract with heat and cold, as wood and PVC do. With doors closing with bolts the last thing you want is bending and contracting. Another advantage of aluminium is that there is no maintenance. You don’t have to repaint them every three or four years, all you have to do is wipe them down with hot water. And whatever they say, PVC have a limited life span. You can have over 200 standard RAL colours in aluminium and one of the bonuses of the aluminium we use is that they do 20 stock colours that you can choose at no extra cost. My family has over 50 years’s experience in this field. We don’t manufacture ourselves but we use local fabricators who have pumped millions of pounds into research over the years, so all our customers benefit from that. We are approved installer of Smart Aluminum Systems, everything is bespoke. We advise, estimate, quote, get them made and installed and they are guaranteed for 10 years. What are the relative advantages of the different kinds of doors? This is where it comes down to aesthetics, whether you are trying to match a period of house, or a more contemporary look. If you are trying to maximise the glass area, to get as much glass in as possible, bifold doors used to be the trend, but there are restrictions on the size of each panel, narrower than for sliding doors. With bifolds you can open up a complete clear space, but you have to have the space to stack them at the sides. Sliding doors now can have triple tracks and get a good wide opening. The slimmest you are going to find are sliding doors; when they are closed there is only 36mm where they meet. What about security? Glass doors have very high security now and there have also been great improvements in the look of the closing fixtures. Handles and pullies are not so obtrusive, not big and heavy duty. You can choose black, aluminium, white, chrome… whatever goes best with your interior. They are a lot more discreet. What alternatives do you suggest to Crittall steel-framed doors? We do a nice slim Crittall lookalike called Smart Alitherm Heritage. We have a set in our showroom so you can see what they look like. We can also do them as fixed walls and room dividers, there are no openings we can’t do in this style. What exciting developments are there in glass technology? There are all kinds of glass solutions now, including self-cleaning glass and anti-sun glass with a slight tint to it. In the summer the heat will bounce off and in the winter it keeps it in and keeps the room warmer. You can also have blinds between two panes of glass, which work manually or by remote control and you can have double and triple glazing even on sliding patio doors, although double is generally more than enough.
