Maggie Alderson picks out some
dream homes
This month we are moving in a
slightly different direction with
House of the Month. In the past we
havee come up with a theme we think will
be of interest, houses which have equestrian
facilities, granny flats, views, amazing
bathrooms, special gardens etc. From now
on we’ve decided instead to look for houses
on the market which are simply wonderful,
for lots of different reasons and in lots of
different ways. Houses which make you
sigh and start imagining your life there. In

The dream: This red brick,
tile-hung house, over three
floors, with dormer windows
at the top, is exactly as I
picture the house in Elizabeth
Jane Howard’s five-book
chronicle of the Cazalet family
(although their childhoods
were spent at Home Place in
Sussex).
Built in 1906, in the Queen
Anne revival style, it has all
the elegance of an imposing
country house, with the
greater comforts of a more
recent building – including
lots of windows to flood it
with light.
The particulars describe it
as ‘in need of modernisation’,
which probably refers to the
fact that it doesn’t have the
now expected eat-in kitchen/
family room set up, or any
dressing rooms. What it does
have is no fewer than two
walk-in larders, a scullery, three
greenhouses, two staircases, a
panelled dining room and at
least one bedroom which looks
big enough to practise your
golf swing in.
There is also a perfect
terrace around the south and
west frontages, with steps
down to the established
gardens and lawns. And I
would be hoping to negotiate
with the current owners to
include their heavenly chintz
loose-covered sofas…
