GLGC Objective 

The Objective of the Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club is to foster the game of 

golf in Gungahlin and the ACT, and develop and maintain a first class 

golf facility. 

GLGC Golf Committee 

The Committee shall be structured as seven (7) office bearers plus five 

(5) other members, elected by the Voting Members of the Club at the 

Annual General Meeting. Only Full Financial members of Gungahlin 

Lakes Golf Club are eligible to hold office as an Office Bearer.

Handicap Information 

To obtain a handicap, a new member must submit three cards signed 

(marked) by a player with a Golf Australia handicap (showing clearly 

themarker’snameandGolfLinknumber). Eachcardmustshowthe date of the round, be signed by player and marker and be clearly 

markedFORHANDICAP. Handicapcardsmustbeplacedinthe Handicap Box under the first Notice Board. 

NOTE: Do not book into fourball events when playing for handicap. 

Under the Golf Australia handicap system, a player’s handicap remains 

in forceeventhoughtheymayleavetheCluborelecttotransfer to 

‘Member In Absence’ (MIA). On return to a playing membership, the 

handicap last used will remain in force until new competition scores 

begin to have an effect on the average score over twenty rounds. 

Handicap Grades 

Standard handicap ranges for Men’s competitions in 2012 are: 

A Grade 0 to 12 B Grade 13 to 19 C Grade 20 to 36 

Division 1 0 to 17 Division 2 18 to 36 

LadiesoperateonasingleDivisionwithhandicaprangefrom0to45. Where there are more than 15 ladies playing on a single event day 

there will be two Divisions (0 to 24 and 25 to 45). 

Grades/Divisions may be adjusted in major events to equalise player 

numbers in each Grade/Division. 

Complaints / Suggestions 

All complaints/suggestions should be made in writing to the Secretary 

for consideration by the GLGC Committee. It is expected that these will 

be of a constructive nature so as to aid the growth and development of 




the Club. No employee of GLGC shall be reprimanded by any Club 

member. Any complaint about staff is to be submitted in writing to the 

Secretary. 

NCR Score 

It is good etiquette to complete your round and not leave your fellow 

competitorstoplayonwithoutyou. If youfailtoplayoutahole (in 

stroke event) please proceed as follows:‐ 

Recordoncard – DSQ on the holeyoufailedtoplayoutandrecord a 

scoreoftwoovernettpar (ietheequivalentof0Stablefordpoints) preceded by an X (eg X 6).

New Members 

It is the responsibility of the Proposer and Seconder to ensure that the 

new member is introduced to the members of the Committee, 

particularly the President and Captain. New members should become 

familiar with all the rules governing the conduct of the Club and 

etiquette on the Course, and should attend a ‘New Members Night’ at 

the first available opportunity. 

Reciprocal Clubs 

A list of Reciprocal Clubs can be found at the rear of this Handbook. 

Please remember that when visiting any other Club, you are an 

ambassador for Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club. Use your 

membership/handicap card, issued when joining or renewing, in 

conjunction with your GolfLink Card as a form of introduction. 

However be mindful that the club you are visiting may not be on 

GolfLink or require a separate letter of introduction and you should 

consider obtaining such a letter which includes your handicap details. 

This letter can be obtained, with some advance notice, on application 

to the Golf Manager. All members receive a handicap card when 

joining or renewing – this card can be signed by the Golf Committee or 

Pro Shop and used for handicap purposes. 




Eligibility for Club Championships 

To be eligible to enter the Club Championships, a financial member 

musthavecompletedfive (5) singleseventsintheprecedingfour monthsandthemember’sscoresmustberecordedinGolfLink. Rounds may have been played at other courses. 

A membercanapplyforawaiverofthisrequirementbymaking applicationtotheGolfCommitteeatleasttwoweekspriortothe Championships. 

Honour Board and Special Events 

For Honour Board and other specified events, five day and six day 

members may, at the discretion of the Committee, be granted full 

playing rights to compete in such events. 

General Etiquette and Golf Administration 

Under the Rules of Golf 2008‐2011 (Section 1 and Rule 33‐7) a player 

may be either disciplined or disqualified for any serious or continued 

breach of etiquette. 

Dress Standards 

Neat golfing attire is the minimum standard expected at 

Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club. 

For men, a collaredshirtorapprovedgolfstyleshirtmustbeworn at 

all times. Slacks, tailored casual shorts or Bermuda shorts with belt 

loops and belt may be worn. All clothing is to be in good repair. 

For ladies, acceptable attire includes skirts, slacks, culottes, tailored 

shorts, ¾ length pants. Shirts can be collared, round or V neck. Ladies 

are not permitted to wear short shorts, tracksuits, sun frocks, gym 

skirts, midriff tops, strapless/thin straps or halter neck sun tops. 




Football jumpers, football shorts, multi‐coloured (or any) beach shorts 

or tracksuitsandthelikearenot permitted. Full detailsaredisplayed attheClub. TheGLGCCommitteeorClubProfessionalshouldbe consulted if you are in any doubt. 

Members will not be allowed on the course if incorrectly attired. 

Starting Time 

AllplayersmustreporttotheStarterintheProShopatleast20 minutes prior to their allocated tee time. 

Players should be at the tee at least five minutes before their scheduled 

tee time. Announcementsby the Pro Shop of the next group on the tee 

are for information only – it is the responsibility of each player to 

ensure they are on the tee and ready to play. 

The Starter has the flexibility to change a player’s tee times or alter the 

timesheetasrequiredtoensurethatgroupsarebalancedinnumbers and/or to cover all and any unforeseen circumstances on the day. The 

player will be advised of any changes at check in. 

The Starter is empowered by the GLGC Committee to alter any tee 

timesinaccordancewiththeRulesofGolf (Rule6‐3). Suchchanges (as and if required) are not negotiable and are to be accepted by any 

affected player without argument or dissent. 

In accordance with Rule 6‐3a the penalty for missing a starting time is: 

Up to 5 minutes late – 2 strokes (Stroke play) or Loss of first hole 

(Match play) 

Beyond 5 minutes – Disqualification

Tee Time Cancellations 

If a player is unable to meet their starting time, the player MUST cancel 

via the Internet site or advise the Starter on ph 6242 4662 at least 20 

minutesbeforethetee time. Failureto do so may lead to a restriction 

on your playing times in accordance with the GLGC ‘No Show’ policy. 

The member will be asked for an explanation for the ‘No Show’ and, if 

no valid or plausible reason exists the following action may be taken: 

First Offence (Individual Event) – Member placed ‘on notice’ for six (6) 

months 

First Offence (Four Ball Event) – 15 day suspension of playing rights 

Second Offence (Individual Event) within a six month period – 

Maximum 15 days suspension of playing rights 

Second Offence (Four Ball Event) within a six month period – 

Maximum 30 days suspension of playing rights 

Third Offence within a six month period – Maximum 30 days 

suspension of playing rights 

FourthOffence – Likely ‘Show Cause’ why playingrightsshouldnot be 

terminated indefinitely and/or why Club membership should not be 

terminated. 

Internet Bookings 

Members have the option of booking tee times on the Internet using a 

logon and PIN. Visit www.lakesgolf.org for details. Please note that 

any booking made under your logon/PIN will be deemed to be made 

by you and you will be held responsible for any misuse of the facility 

(eg under the No Show policy).

Member Practice Rounds 

Member social play is not permitted during a programmed event 

unless specific approval has been given by a GLGC Committee member. 

Any member on the course not playing in a programmed event (eg just 

playing socially or general practice play), must use the WHITE tees 

only. Use of the BLUE tees for these purposes shall result in 

administrative action being taken against the member in accordance 

with the Club Rules. All players must report to the Pro Shop prior to 

playing on the course. 

Captain of the Group 

The player on the lowest handicap automatically becomes the Captain 

of the group and is responsible for ensuring that the etiquette of the 

game, speed of play and general conditions of play are observed. 

Notwithstanding this, all players should observe the requirement to 

keep up with the group in front. 

Ready Golf 

Rule 10‐2 providesfor the player who has the honour to be allowed to 

play before his opponent or fellow‐competitor tees their ball. 

However, inanefforttospeedupplay, theGLGCCommittee encourages the adoption of READY GOLF principles. That is, if play 

can be sped up by allowingshorter hitters in the group to play firstor by allowinganyplayerwhoisimmediatelyreadytohit, whensafe to 

do so, then this practice is strongly recommended. 

Timing for a Round of Golf 

The acceptable time for a round of golf at Gungahlin Lakes is 

approximately 4 hours 15 minutes. However, it has been regularly 

proven that rounds of four (4) hours are achievable. For the maximum

enjoyment of all players, all groups must make every effort to complete 

their round as close as possible to the four hours. 

Players in the earliest groups of the day must move as quickly as 

possiblearoundthecoursetoensure the rest of the field is not 

delayed. Players in early groups that do not maintain an adequate pace 

of play may be restricted to later tee times in future competitions. 

Course Marshaling 

Where a Course Marshal is on duty for a club competition, the purpose 

is to help you enjoy your game by helping in case of emergencies, 

protecting the course from misconduct by any player and ensuring the 

speed of play is appropriate, given the number of players on the 

course. Please give the Marshal your fullest cooperation. Any concern 

about pace of play or rules must be raised with the Match Committee 

members appointed for that competition. 

Reducing Slow Play 

Slow play is unnecessaryand irritatesmost players. While players are 

not expected to ‘run’ around the course, they are expected to keep up 

with the group ahead of them. Remember the rule: 

Your place in the field is immediately behind the group in front, 

NOT immediately in front of the group behind. 

Members must observe the GLGC Pace of Play Guidelines 

(GLGC Guidance Statement No 10). 

Any group that has a complete hole in front of them should allow faster 

groupstoplaythrough. Playerssearchingforaballshouldsignal the 

group behind them to play through as soon as it becomes apparent 

thattheballwillnotbeeasilyfound. Theyneednotsearchfor the 

allowable five (5) minutes before doing so.

No onemustplaybeforetheplayersinfrontareoutofrange. See 

GLGC Guidance Statement No 9 ‐ Dangerous Play. 

When approaching a green, or when putting out, leave your buggy/bag 

on that side of the green which allows for the quickest route to the next 

tee but not in front of the green. 

If you feel that a groupis slow, politelyinformtheslowgroupof your 

concerns; politely ask them to speed up. 

If thereisnoimprovement, informtheCourseMarshal, or theduty match committee person on completion of your round. 

Playersshouldconfinetheirpre‐shotpracticeroutinetowhatis absolutelynecessary. That is, practice swings should be kept to 1 or 2, 

with time over the actual shot minimised to what is reasonable and 

comfortable. 

Priority on the Course 

Players participating in programmed events have priority at all times. 

� A single player has no standing and should give way to a 

programmed match of any kind. 

� Any socialplayersor socialgroupshaveno standingexceptifthe playersorgrouphavebeenallocatedabookedteetimeinthe prescribedteeblocksallocatedbytheClubCaptainor, inhis absence, the Club Professional. 

� Any match playing a whole round is entitled to pass through a 

match playing a shorter round.

Member’s Guests/Visitor Green Fees 

Member’s Guest Fee ‐ Any member mayinviteguests (whoholda current Golf Club membership and a bona fide Golf Australia handicap) 

tocompeteandplaywiththeminscheduledClubCompetitions. A 

maximumoftwo (2) guestspermembershallapply. Timesheetsare set up to allow members to book visitors in only within two days of the 

competition. NotethatthisofferisnotapplicabletoSocialPlay and 

restrictions may apply to Honour Board/Monthly Medal events. 

The following green fee rates per round apply to member’s guests 

when playing with a member in a Club or Pro Shop Competition: 

Mid week Pro Competition – 50% of the Mid‐Week Daily Rate (plus 

Comp Fee) 

Saturday/Sunday/Public Holiday – 50% of the Weekend Daily Rate 

(plus Comp Fee) 

Note that green fees apply for the Club’s financial year from 1st October 

to 30th September – these fees will change from 1st October 2012. 

Members are to ensure that they accompany their guest(s) to the Pro 

Shop before play, introduce them totheProShopstaffand, asa courtesy where possible, the President or Captain. 

In all other circumstances, visitors will be required to pay the 

published full green fee applicable to the day of play. 

Prize Schedule 

(Excluding Pro Shop Competitions) 

All club competitions will have prizes allocated either as a Club 

voucher or by any other means at the discretion of the Golf Club 

Committee including Pro Shop Credits, purchased goods and services 

and sponsor donations.

Vouchersarevalidfor3monthsfromdateofissueandmaybe creditedtoyourProShopaccountorusedatparticipatingbusinesses listedonthebackofthevoucher. Afteronemonthanyunclaimed vouchersheldbytheProShopwillbecreditedtoyouraccount. A 

minimum $20 redemption value may apply. 

Claiming Ball Prizes 

Ballswon in club competitionsmaybecollectedfromtheProShop up 

to 14 daysaftertheevent. Anyunclaimedballswillbecreditedto a 

separate ball account in your Pro Shop account. 

If you do not renew your golf membership of the Club, you need to 

clear your Pro Shop (winnings) account within 3 months of your 

membership renewal date. Otherwise any credit held will be forfeited 

after this date. 

Hole in One Prizes 

The major Hole‐in‐One prize sponsored by the Ainslie Football and 

Social Club (AFSC) may only be won by a current financial member of 

the Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club and only when recorded in programmed 

Club competitions (including Matchplay). Generally speaking, prize 

eligibility is valid for any programmed 18‐hole Saturday, Sunday and 

Public Holiday Club competitions and programmed Pro Shop 18‐hole 

competitions on Wednesdays or during the December/January period. 

This does not include ‘walk‐up’ competitions or nine hole events. 

Eagle’s Nest ‐ Members only 

Score an eagle in any Saturday or Sunday Club event (excludes Public 

Holiday and Pro Shop events) to win the accumulated Eagle’s Nest of 

balls – minimum of three balls. One ball will be added to the nest each 

week until won. 

If more than one eagle is scored, the Eagle’s Nest is shared.

Super Shot 

In each weekend club competition, one par 3 hole is designated as the 

Super Shot hole. The jackpot prize is won by any member who can hit 

their tee shot to within one metre of the hole. The jackpot prize may 

be paid as golf balls or as a club voucher (at the discretion of the 

committee based on the size of the jackpot). 

Course Maintenance 

Gungahlin Lakes is a ‘soft spikes’ only course. 

Sand Buckets 

All players must carry and use sand buckets to repair divots and any 

other damage to the course. 

Repairing Fairways and Greens 

A player should ensure that any turf cut or displaced (a “divot”) is 

replaced and/or filled with sand and that any damage to a putting 

green made by a ball (pitch mark) is carefully repaired. 

Bunkers 

Before leaving a bunker, a player should be careful to smooth out all 

indentations they make and other marks that have not been smoothed 

out by a previous player. After use, bunker rakes should be placed 

outside the bunker in line with the play of the hole. Use suitable entry 

and exit points from the bunker such as the tongues of grass – do not 

walk on the face of a bunker. 

Pitch Marks on Greens 

When proceeding on to any green, all players should search for, find 

and repair their ball’s pitch mark. If time permits, all players should

repair as many pitch marks as possible within the vicinity of where 

their ball has come to rest. 

Damage to the putting green caused by golf shoes can only be repaired 

after completion of the hole (Rule 16‐1c). 

Golf Carts 

On‐course notices regulating the movement of motorised ride‐in/on 

golf cartsare to be strictlyobserved. The use of any such conveyance 

in general Club competition is permitted except where the entry form 

explicitlystatesthatmotorisedcartsarenotpermitted. Theuse of 

motorised carts for Honour Board events will normally be confined to 

those players who have medical evidenceto supportthe need for such 

useon anygivendayorhavebeenapprovedbytheClubCommittee (refer to conditions of play on entry form). 

Private carts are only permitted on the course in limited circumstances 

where the Club has given prior approval for personal use. If approved, 

an indemnityformmust be signed annuallyby the member and a user 

fee is payable. Bulk Cart Hire is Available to Members. 

Greens Staff 

Greens staff have priority on the course at all times while carrying out 

their duties. 

Distance Markers 

All Distance Markers (150m, 100m and sprinkler heads) are measured 

to the centre of the putting green.

Flag Positions 

Flag positions are as follows: 

Red – front 1/3rd of the green 

Yellow – middle 1/3rd of the green 

White or Blue – back 1/3rd of the green 

Special Local Rule – Distance Measuring Devices 

For all play at this course a player may obtain distance information by 

using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated 

round, a player uses a distance‐measuring device that is designed to 

gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g. 

gradient, windspeed, temperature, etc), the player is in breach of Rule 

14‐3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether 

any such additional information is actually used. (Appendix 1, Part B, 

Specimen Local Rule 9) 

Special Local Rule – Mobile Phones 

The use of a mobilephone by a competitoror his caddy is permitted if 

all membersoftheplayinggroupagree. The mobilephonemustbein silent mode and its use must not distract other players or delay play. 

The penalty for breach of this rule is disqualification. 

Note: Use of the phone for a purpose that breaches the Local Rule on 

Distance Measuring Devices may result in a penalty in accordance with 

that rule.

REPAIRING PITCH MARKS 

Despite the length of many pitch repairers, you should not go very 

deep into the green (perhaps 10mm) so that you do not damage the 

grass roots. The idea is to push the top layer of soil back into the 

centre of the pitch mark. 

Many people think it is necessary to lift up the soil. Not so. Just lever 

the outside of the pitch mark into the middle and, presto, mark 

repaired!

The Games Golfers Play 

FOURSOMES 

Teams of two. One half of aggregate stroke handicap. Players play 

alternatively from tee and alternate shots on the remainder of each 

hole. Penalties do not affect the playing order of alternate shots. 

AMERICAN FOURSOMES 

Teams of two. Three eighths of aggregate stroke handicap. Both 

players play from the tee. Each player then plays one shot with their 

partner’s ball. The players then decide which ball is to be played and 

this ball is then played alternately for the remainder of the hole. 

CANADIAN FOURSOMES 

Teams of two. Three eighths of aggregate stroke handicap for all 

players. Both players play from the tee and then decide on which 

ball is to be played. The selected ball is then played alternately for 

the remainder of the hole. 

FOUR BALL IRISH STABLEFORD 

Teams of four. All four players’ Stableford scores must be recorded 

on the card. On Holes 1-6 the best score is recorded, on Holes 7-11, 

the best two scores are recorded, on Holes 12-15, the best three 

scores are recorded, on Holes 16-18, all four scores are recorded. 

2 BALL AGGREGATE STABLEFORD 

Teams of two. The Stableford scores of both players are recorded 

for each hole. The result for each hole is the combined total of the 

two players’ Stableford scores.

LAKEBALL 

Teams of four. One sixth of aggregate stroke handicap for all 

players. Each hole has a variety of designated drivers and 

designated putters. Only the designated drivers and putters are 

allowed to play those shots on each hole – guide sheet provided. On 

the fairway, the selected ball is to be marked and all players may 

then place the ball within one club grip length of the mark (no nearer 

the hole) to play their shot. In the rough, the selected ball is to be 

marked and all players may then drop their ball within one club 

length of the mark. On the green, the selected ball is to be marked 

and the designated putter(s) may then putt from within one putter 

head of the mark. 

4 BALL MULTIPLIER STABLEFORD 

Teams of two. Scores for both players are recorded on the card. In 

the Result column, enter the score representing a multiplication of 

both scores (eg. 2 points plus 3 points gives a 6 point result; 2 

points by 1 point gives a 2 point result; 3 points with a wipe gives a 0 

point result). 

2 PERSON AMBROSE 

Teams of two. One quarter of aggregate stroke handicap. Both 

players play from the tee and then select the best ball position. Both 

players then play from the selected position on each shot. On the 

fairway, the ball is to be placed and played from within one CARD 

length of the marked ball position but the placed position must not 

be nearer to the hole. In the rough, the ball is to be dropped and 

played from within one CLUB length of the marked ball position. On 

the green, the ball is to be placed and played from within one 

PUTTER HEAD of the marked ball position.

PAR BISQUE 

Played off your normal club handicap. You may alter the Index on 

the card but only to a maximum of your handicap. e.g. if your 

handicap is 12 you may allocate those twelve shots to any holes you 

wish, not necessarily one shot on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17 

& 18. You may allocate any number of shots to any particular hole 

provided that you do not exceed your total handicap over the 18 

holes. You must allocate the number of shots you wish on each hole 

prior to teeing off on that hole. This need not be done at the 

beginning of the round but must be done prior to teeing off at the 

relevant holes.

SCORING STROKE EVENT 

The most common form of competition golf and very simple to score. The number of strokes taken on each hole is entered on the card. Each nine is tallied and then the eighteen 

holes are tallied. The players full handicap is then deducted and the gross and nett scores are entered at the top right of the card. The winner of the scratch section of a stroke 

event is the player who records the lowest gross score. The Nett winner is the player who records the lowest handicap deducted score.

SCORING 4BBB STROKE EVENT 

Two players play as partners, each taking strokes at holes as in a stroke competition. The better Nett stroke score of either player is counted. In any 

Fourball handicap event care must be taken to mark the scores of each player in separate columns headed by the initials of the players. Only two 

player’s score should be recorded for each hole. If scores are mixed and the Committee cannot check the card the players may be disqualified.

SCORING PAR EVENT 

In Par the score is entered on the card in the same way as in stroke play with the exception that where the score exceeds par for the hole, after 

allowing for handicap (if the player is in receipt of one or more handicap strokes) the score should not be written in. It is the custom that when a 

player is beaten by Par, the ball shall be picked up. After entering the stroke score on the card, the result is marked in the column provided with a ‘+’ 

sign for a win (Nett score better than Par), ‘0’ for a half (Nett score equals Par) and a ‘‐’ for a loss (Nett score greater than Par). At the end of the 

round the plus and minus signs are added and the Nett result written as so many ‘Up’, ‘down’ or ‘Square’. A player is allowed his full stroke handicap 

and the strokes are taken at the holes indicated on the card (Stroke Play Index).

SCORING STABLEFORD EVENT 

In Stableford a player takes strokes at each hole according to their handicap, scoring points on the Nett result. At the end of the round the 

player having the highest number of points is the winner. A member off a scratch handicap would receive: Par = 2 points, 1 over Par (bogie) 

= 1 point, 2 over par (double bogie) = 0 points, 1 under Par (birdie) = 3 points, 2 under Par (eagle) = 4 points, etc. If a member receives a 

Handicap shot on a hole they would receive: Par = 3 points, 1 over Par (bogie) = 2 points, 2 over par (double bogie) = 1 point, 3 or more over 

Par = 0 points, 1 under Par = 4 points, 2 under Par = 5 points, etc.
