It Matter To Me

“It matters to me because I am the daughter of Europe. My father was Finish my mother’s family
came from near Poland. I was born and brought up in the UK but have lived for the last 13 years in
Barcelona. My son and daughter were born in Barcelona, my sister lives in Helsinki... It matters to me
because Brexit is not in the National interest, people in the UK will be worse off, economically,
culturally and with less rights to move freely throughout Europe. My job as a researcher fighting for
gender equality in science is funded by the European Commission might be threatened. My and my
family’s home is in Barcelona - my children have never lived in the UK - although have family there.
Maybe they will want to live there in the future - Brexit means this will be more difficult for them
although they currently hold British passports... I could go on forever.....”
“It matters to me because I wish for a secure stable Europe in a reformed EU to maintain peace
which is without price.. We are one of 28 teabags in a pot. The longer they stay together the stronger
the tea. Take one out early the weaker tea but the stronger but weakened teabag is consigned to the
dustbin.”
“It also matters to me because unified economies, freedom of movement and integrated politics all
discourage conflict between nations. Whilst war in Europe is now seen as ridiculous it should not be
forgotten how violent and destructive Europe has been, even within the last 100 years. Causation is
not correlation but our modern European peace has come to be under the EU and its
predecessors...#itmatterstome”
“It matters to me on so many levels. In the ‘80s I was a campaigner and supporter of racial and
gender equality, now we have Windrush. Now I am a mother and grandmother and I see the
freedoms and quality of life of the next generations under threat. I am settled as a Spanish resident
and see my hard won and hard payed for rights, health care and pensions being treated with
disinterest. I am the daughter of a steel worker and the granddaughter of a miner both of whom are
probably turning in their graves to see the UK being dragged to disaster by a right wing Tory elite
and the Labour Party standing to one side allowing it to happen. I am a proud European, whatever
happens I am staying put. Bless all of you who feel the same.”
“It matters to me because my partner works in the UK and any restriction of free movement between
countries would be a disaster. It matters to me because I have family in the UK and need to travel
there quite often. It matters to me because I have children here and am worried about their future
and any limits they will be confronted with. It matters to me because it's just a really really STUPID
idea and it should never happen.”
“It matters to me partly because my Anglo/Spanish children were born after the forming of the EU.
Their passports have always said they are citizens of the European Union as well as of the UK so why
should this be forcibly taken away from them? They have many European friends with whom they
find a common love of their cultures of freedom, peace and democracy...#itmatterstome”
“It matters to me because a national vote that revealed thinly veiled racism is not the kind of world I
want to be in. I live in Spain and don't see here the superiority and ex-empire jingoism that brought
about Brexit. I want to stay here, please.”
