I WOULD LIKE to extend 

my sincere appreciation to 

Dolly Warren for years of 

coordination of the All Village 

Garage Sales. After many years 

of involvement, Dolly has 

decided that it would be best 

for her to allow someone else 

to take over this event. These 

types of efforts are what really 

make the culture of Maple 

Bluff so special. Thank you, 

Dolly for your years of service! 

With that in mind, it is now 

time for another person to 

stand up and be recognized! 

The Village Garage Sale will not 

take place unless another person 

steps forward to coordinate 

this event. The work involved 

includes various tasks that 

get this event off the ground, 

including receiving applications 

from sellers, mapping sites, and, 

distribution of informational 

guides for those involved. If 

you are interested, please get 

in touch with me or Curt 

Erickson at the Village Center. 

A quick note on 

volunteerism: 

Over the past several months, 

the Village has mourned the 

passing of two of our Dailey 

Service Award winners. Several 

months ago, Don Warren, 

Dolly’s husband and co-winner 

of the 2009 Dailey Service 

Award passed on. In March, 

John Weston, the 2007 Dailey 

Service Award winner also 

passed away. Maple Bluff has 

always been a special place, 

in part because our residents 

take the time to be an active 

part of the community. With 

volunteers, these extra events

them, the special events 

cannot be sustained. We do

special events to the greatest 

extent possible, but we cannot 

take them over. Please think 

about getting involved! 

Besides volunteering for a 

special event, there are many 

other ways to get involved within 

our community. First, our 

Fire and EMS Department are 

always looking for volunteers. 

The Fire/EMS Department are 

hosting ongoing informational 

meetings; please read the Fire 

Department’s article for further 

information. If joining the Fire/ 

EMS Department is not within 

your future, we are also in need 

of residents to serve on various 

Village Committees. New 

Committee assignments will 

take place at the Village Board 

meeting in May. If you are 

interested in serving on a committee, 

please get in touch with 

me about your interests and we 

will find the right match for 

you. If you are worried about 

time commitments, please do 

not let that deter you; Maple 

Bluff is extremely reasonable 

with our meetings and expectations 

for committee members.

Maple Bluff Home Tour in the Works 

The historic Girl Scout cabin currently used 

as the home for Camp Ya Gotta Wanna is in 

desperate need of repairs; it lacks a foundation, 

is starting to lean and its windows won’t 

close. A group of Village residents is currently 

researching the cost of repairing or replacing 

the cabin. In the meantime we are tentatively 

planning a Maple Bluff Home Tour for October, 

2012 to start raising funds for the project. If you 

are willing to open your home, please contact 

Curt Erickson at the Village Hall at 244-3048. 

This is a great way to showcase our beautiful 

neighborhood and its unique houses while also 

benefiting a treasured children’s program. 

Swim & Dive Team Sign-Up 

Is your child interested in swimming or diving 

this summer? If so, the Maple Bluff Pool 

Committee would like to invite you and your 

children to attend the Junior All Sport Sign-Up at 

Maple Bluff Country Club on Sunday April 29th 

from 5:00 - 8:30pm. Swim and dive coaches 

will be available to answer any and all questions 

you may have about the programs, practice 

schedules, meets, etc. All village residents are 

invited and encouraged to join the teams. We 

hope to see you there - MBCC Pool Committee

SPRING IS DEFINITELY in the air. All this great 

weather is allowing us to get a head start on 

outdoor activities, specifically the spring clean 

up of yards and gardens. We have started the 

weekly yard waste collection early this year to 

meet the needs of residents taking advantage 

of the spring like weather. Please follow these 

basic guidelines to ensure timely collection: 

• Material placed for collection should be on 

the terrace and not in the roadway. There is 

a village ordinance that is in place to protect 

our lakes from debris carried away with storm 

water run off. 

• All material should be separated into like 

piles. Do not co-mingle items. 

• Brush should be placed uniformly. Cut ends 

facing the same direction. 

• Please place all waste material away from 

poles/signs/mail boxes. Alert service providers 

not to park vehicles and equipment next to 

waste material. Our equipment needs room for 

proper pick-up. 

• Contractors are responsible for the waste they 

generate. 

• Items placed at streets edge by Monday at 

7am should be collected that week.

Wednesday recycle collection has come and 

gone and most residents are doing a great job.

POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATES

◆ The next National Take Back Initiative will be on Sat, April 28, 

2012. The National Take Back Initiative is an effort being spearheaded 

and organized by the Drug Enforcement Agency, otherwise 

known best by the acronym, DEA. This effort has literally removed 

tons of medications from being abused, sold, or disposed of in our 

waterways and/or landfills. 

◆ Unused and expired medications (pill, tablet, capsule and caplet) 

may be turned into the Village Center on that date. We are unable 

to accept liquids, intra-venous solutions, medications you need to 

inject or inhalers). Thus far, our Fire Department/EMS has been 

providing sharps containers for needles for safe disposal. If you are 

unable to bring your unwanted medications in on that date, we are 

willing to accept the medications and keep them in our secure evidence 

until the next Take Back Initiative. I believe that it is well 

worth the effort on our part to keep these medications from being 

used incorrectly or disposed of in an unsafe manner. Watch 

the Village website for exact times, which will be announced soon. 

◆ Spring is officially here! With the onset of spring, even after a mild 

winter, it brings many people out to enjoy the change. Motorists 

need to be aware of pedestrians, dog walkers, bicyclists and motorcyclists. 

Pedestrians do have the right of way at cross walks and/or at 

corners or intersections where there is an expectation of pedestrians 

crossing the roadway. Bicyclists must obey the rules of the road. On 

of the biggest traffic complaints we receive during the warm months 

is both vehicles and bicycles failing to stop for stop signs. 

◆ Dog owners, be considerate of others. Clean up after your dog 

and don’t allow them to roam on other people’s property. Too often 

people who are not dog aficionados became that way by encounters 

with poorly trained dogs, and/or irresponsible owners. The Village 

of Maple Bluff does not have a “leash law”, but abides by Wisconsin

that an officer will be in the building particularly during evenings, 

nights and weekends. If you call the Dispatch Center, the call 

taker can be getting important information that will then be given to 

the officer by another dispatcher instead of the officer coming into 

the station, returning a phone call, getting the information, calling 

dispatch to get an incident number created, and then responding to 

your situation. Please help us expedite our response to your needs!

Call & Pump 

Call and Pump is "CPR" simplified. It is 

intended for use by the general public in 

the event of an adult (over 15 y/o) suffering 

a cardiac arrest. By learning only a few 

simple steps, you may be able to help save 

someone’s life. If you see someone who: 

collapses suddenly, is non-responsive and 

is not breathing normally; you should: 

1. Call 911. If someone is with you, 

tell that person to call 911. 

2. Lay the victim on their back. 

3. Place your hands on the middle 

of the victim’s chest. 

4. Begin pushing/pumping on 

the victim’s chest at the rate 

of 100 times per minute. 

5. Continue until additional help arrives.

WHEN THE GARDENS needs a model, I am ready to go. OK, I’m not talking about a nice 

coat, shoes and someone taking pictures! I’m talking about creating a home in a senior apartment 

allowing people to know that “hearth and home” can be created with their things in 

the security of a senior community, yet still offer an independent lifestyle. 

You may have heard of The Gardens on Madison’s near Westside, Olympic Village in 

Sun Prairie, McKee Park Apartments in Fitchburg as well as Independent Health Care, a 

Home Health Agency, Meals on Wheels and In-Home Care Services. Did you know that 

they all come under one umbrella? Well they do, it’s Independent Living, Inc.(ILI), and it’s 

a pretty big umbrella. ILI serves older adults and their families throughout Dane County 

by providing housing, home health care and in home services. 

A few years ago, Rita Giovannoni, CEO called me to see if my design company, Beauccoup 

Ideas LLC, could help with some design projects. They were adding new 2 bedroom apartments 

at The Gardens. They needed help with basic design work, staging and repurposing

blended existing furniture with donated items 

to create a refreshed and recycled new look. 

Some very thoughtful residents, community 

businesses and charitable organizations donate 

money for some of our larger projects and others 

donate gently used furniture, artwork and 

accessories to help pull our projects together. 

Others volunteer their time to ILI’s mission 

of service to older adults by delivering Meals 

on Wheels, helping with resident focused projects 

or working in our greenhouse and gardens. 

Well, I am now working part-time for this 

great organization and I am looking for donations 

of lightly used furniture, artwork, accessories 

and character pieces to continue our 

work to keep living areas fresh with items donated 

from the community. It is so delightful 

to be part of an organization committed to recycling 

and efficient use of our community resources.

Fathers play a very special role in our lives – a role 

that is irreplaceable. As mentors, guides, teachers, and 

some of the best playmates around, dads are something 

special. The third Sunday of June has been set aside 

as a day to celebrate and honor their presence in our 

lives. It is on this day that dads, grandpas, and those 

who are not our fathers but have stepped into that 

role are shown how very much they mean to us. 

Whether a typical Father’s Day at your home consists of a 

meal of his favorite foods, is a day where the family partakes 

in his favorite game, or if Dad is honored by a day off to do 

what he likes best, the message is the same: “Dad, we love 

you for who you are and we thank you for all you do.”

Programs and Community Events from 

the Department of Recreation 

Basketball Recap: 

4th Grade Girls finished their 

regular season 7-3. On March 10th, 

the Girls won their tournament in 

Waunakee finishing the season 

at 11-3. I would like to thank 

Jamie Satre and Ryan Redemann 

for coaching the girls this year. 

It was amazing to witness 

their progress in the sport of 

basketball since November. 

4th Grade Boys finished their 

regular season 5-4. They also 

played on March 10th in Waunakee 

and lost in the semifinals by 3 

points to finish the year 6-5. 

I would like to thank Jen and 

Chris Hussin, Greg Anderson, 

Jen Tracey and Max Loetscher 

for coaching the boys this year. 

This team consisted of 3rd and 

4th Grade Boys which played 

exclusively in a 4th Grade League 

and played well in every game.

Ocean in a Box 

Did you know that 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by the 

ocean? It’s fun to learn about the ocean and all of the living 

creatures that live in these great bodies of water. Make your 

own ocean aquarium by following the instructions below: 

Materials: 

• Medium box 

• String 

• Hole punch 

• Scissors 

Instructions: 

• Glue 

• Blue construction 

paper 

• Crayons 

• White paper 

• Pencil 

• Small squares 

of cardboard 

Glue blue construction paper on each side of the interior of the box. Cut a 

small hole in the top of the box for each animal you are going to include in 

your ocean. Draw and color various sea creatures (such as fish, sea horses, 

jellyfish, sharks, etc.), cut them out, and then laminate them (optional). 

With a hole puncher, punch a hole in the top of each sea creature and tie 

with a short string, just long enough to make the animals “swim” in the 

box. Push each string through the holes you punched in the top of the box 

and tie the other end of the string around a small piece of cardboard so 

the string does not fall through the hole. Now your fish are swimming! 

To complete your sea scene, include other sea creatures to glue onto 

your ocean floor such as crabs, sea turtles and starfish. If you wish, you 

can also add plant life and sand or pebbles, or create an ocean cave.
