Intro to health care careers for students
Sixty local high school students
received an introduction to
health care careers from
Edgerton, Irma and Chauvin
alumni on May 3 at Edgerton
High School.
Students had hands-on
learning of suturing, catheter
care, and giving an injection and
were treated to an Rural Health
Professions Action Plan (RhPAP)
sponsored lunch and a presentation
from motivational speaker,
Alvin Law.
The former students who
include a combined lab/x-ray
technician, pharmacist, psychologist,
physical therapist, speech
language pathologist, registered
nurse, dietician, paramedic and
doctor spoke to participants
about their health care career
paths.
Edgerton’s health skills event
presents an innovative approach
to educating rural high school
students.
The community is not home to
a health care centre, but the local
committee believes that inspiring
students will nonetheless
improve rural health care viability
in the region.
RhPAP Skills events, including
Skills Days and Skills Weekends
for high school and post-secondary
students, are sponsored
by the Rural Health Professions
Action Plan, and are scheduled in
rural Alberta communities
throughout the year by the
RhPAP Rural Community
Consultant team.
Established in 1991 by the
Government of Alberta as the
Alberta Rural Physician Action
Plan, a renewed Rural Health
Professions Action Plan, or
RhPAP, is transitioning from a
rural physician support program
to a rural allied health professionals
and community
development agency.
Their vision is to help rural
Alberta have and sustain the
right number of rural health
practitioners in the right places,
offering the right services,
through community and professional
development programs,
services, and evidence-informed
advocacy.
Paintearth County
Concerns over proposed procedural bylaw expressed
Emily Wheller
ECA Review
Donna and Gerard Fetaz joined
Paintearth County council during a
regular meeting, on May 1, to discuss
their concerns with the proposed procedural
bylaw, specifically the
allotment of time given to a presentation
and delegation.
“We are trying to be positive moving
forward,” spoke Donna Fetaz, “There
needs to be more communicating,
encouraging collaboration.”
“In this council, and the previous,
the two terms I have been on we have
never cut anybody off,” shared Coun.
Doreen Blumhagen,” When they are
speaking we have never told them
time is up.”
“It helps with continuity of meetings,”
Chief Administrative Office,
Tarolyn Aaserud, stated,” There have
been times when there has been six or
seven delegations.”
The procedural bylaw will be
brought back to council at an
upcoming meeting.
Emily Wheller
ECA Review
During a special Castor council
meeting on May 3, council unanimously
voted to borrow up to $450,000
on behalf of the Castor Recreation
Board, to partially fund the arena renovation
project.
The tenders have been received and
the project cost is $951,642. This
includes the cost of the architects,
asbestos abatement, project manager,
and the building permit.
Currently the Recreation Board has
an estimated $450,000 to put towards
the project creating a difference of
$51,642.
“We will come up with the rest,”
stated Recreation Director, Natasha
Bozek, “We will have too.”
Bozek shared that the Recreation
Board is expecting funds from different
avenues, including a casino,
mens night out and other donations,
although the exact amount is
unknown.
The Recreation Board is currently
setting a date for the asbestos removal,
and once it is finished demolition will
start.
RCMP Sergeant leaving
Sergeant Darcy McGunigal of the
Coronation RCMP detachment joined
council and gave a brief update.
One of the policing priorities, traffic
safety, saw a dramatic increase to 406
traffic violations during the 2017-2018
year from 281 last fiscal year.
“That is a very strong indicator of
the proactiveness from our members,”
shared McGunigal, “We are getting
very good value for our members.”
Sergeant McGunigal also shared
with council that he will be departing
from the Coronation detachment after
four years of service.
“It is bittersweet for my family and
I,” shared McGunigal, “I take no joy in
leaving.”
Sergeant McGunigal has accepted a
position at RCMP Headquarters in
Edmonton, and will be transferring
likely sometime in June.
“I want to thank everyone, present
and past councillors, for the all support,”
concluded McGunigal, “You are
incredibly supportive community in
terms of backing your local police. It
has been a fantastic group to work
with.”
gardening
Creating privacy in the garden and on the patio
Are you tired of letting your
neighbours spy on your yard to
their heart’s content?
Beyond fen ces and hedges —
which are practical for
back yards, but not so much for
urban patios — there are countless
ways to shield
your outdoor space
from prying eyes.
Here are a few to get
you inspired.
Natural screens
Take advantage of
the natural properties
of plants such as
sedges and climbers —
the latter of which
grow incredibly
quickly and require
little maintenance —
to create a vertical
garden.
Clematis, honeysuckle
and climbing
roses, for example, will embellish
your patio with their
colourful flowers, while the
dense foliage of vines, lichens
and hops will create a magnificent
screen of greenery. Walls,
fences, lattices, arbours — there
are tons of different structures
your plants can climb on.
Furthermore, sometimes it
only takes one strategically
positioned large plant (palm
tree, hibiscus, etc.) to create a
privacy screen. Something to
consider!
Smart
arrangements
Various arrangements
can allow
you to enjoy your
backyard in perfect
privacy.
Consider
awnings: a simple
sheet of fabric over
your meal area or
outdoor living
space is enough to
block the view of
neighbours whose
windows have a
bird’s eye view
Four easy-to-grow outdoor plants
Are you a gardening
novice looking for some
easy-to-grow plant varieties
to get started with? Here are
a few foolproof options for
you to try this summer.
1. Marigolds
Deep golden yellow marigolds
grow easily and
require little maintenance:
all you’ll need to do is
remove wilted flowers as
they appear and water when
the weather gets really hot.
Their pungent smell acts as
a natural repellent against
aphids, among other
pests.
2. Tuberous
begonias
Tuberous begonias
grow to be about 30
centimetres tall and
wide. These bulb
plants grow in full
sun or partial shade,
in fresh, well-drained
soil. They come in all
sorts of shapes and
colours, from yellow
to pink to bright red
and even white.
3. Cosmos
These large flowers
are perfect for flowerbeds.
They bloom
throughout the
summer and attract
butterflies. Plant
them in full sun and don’t
over water, as they prefer a
drier soil. Using compost is
not recommended for
cosmos, which would
become too big and require
a tutor.
4. Geraniums
Colourful and easy to care
for, geraniums only require
a little bit of effort. You’ll
need to regularly remove
wilted flowers and yellow
leaves to stimulate healthy
growth. Water them with
fertilizer-enriched water
once the surface of the soil is dry.
Ready to get your hands dirty? For
surefire success in the garden, ask the
experts at your local plant nursery or
garden centre for advice.
Rural Crime Reduction Project –
wanted male arrested in Mirror
Several investigations began
on Jan. 31, 2018 with
Blackfalds RCMP and culminated
in a targeted arrest
made by the newly formed
Rural Crime Reduction Project
on April 25 in Mirror, Ab.
As a result of this arrest
RCMP have a ‘wanted’ male in
custody, and facing a multitude
of charges.
On Jan. 31, Blackfalds
RCMP investigated a break
and enter and assault allegation
occurring at a Gasoline
Alley Hotel. Lyle Vance was
charged with four criminal
charges relating to this
occurrence.
On Feb. 24, Bashaw RCMP
launched an investigation into
three personal robberies that
had been committed prior.
Two suspects, Lyle Vance and
Lyle Anderson were identified
and each charged with over 20
criminal offences relating to
these robberies.
It was also determined that
they were involved in a flight
from police incident in Sylvan
Lake on Feb. 22.
In mid April, the Bashaw
RCMP engaged the newly
formed Rural Crime Reduction
Project team to provide assistance
in locating and arresting
Lyle Vance and Lyle Anderson
who were both identified as
repeat offenders and were at
large.
On April 16, Lyle Anderson
(26) was arrested by the
Ponoka RCMP without incident.
He is currently in
custody and next court date is
May 10 in Red Deer Provincial
Court.
At 4:43 p.m. on April 25, Red
Deer RCMP responded to a
complaint of a carjacking and
possible kidnapping.
The female owner of a van
had been assaulted and her
van was stolen following the
assault. All parties involved
were known to each other and
further investigation into this
incident continues.
Red Deer RCMP General
Investigation Section members
with the assistance of Police
Dog Services investigated.
Later in the day on April 25,
Songs My Mother Taught Me
at the Three Hills Arts Academy
on Sunday, May 6, proved to be
an intimate tribute to mothers
through the presentations of
classically trained musicians.
Trudy Ballard (piano), Anne
Burchill (flute), and Tracie
Skeet-Brook (soprano), all
from the Olds-Didsbury area,
rendered their contributions as
trio, duets, or solos. Performers
visiting with the audience
during intermission and light
refreshments contributed to
the pre-Mother’s Day event.
Tracie Skeet-Brook teaches
voice at the Arts Academy,
a non-profit organization
which promotes various art
expressions in Three Hills and
area. ECA Review/D.Nadeau
as a result of on-going intelligence
gathering, the Rural
Crime Reduction Project
members were in Mirror and
stationed to arrest Vance.
Shortly after 6 p.m., he was
located and arrested without
incident.
It was determined that he
was the driver of the van
related to the above noted
incident which had just
occurred in Red Deer. He has
been charged by the Red Deer
RCMP following this incident.
Vance remains in custody
and is currently facing over 40
charges in relation to incidents
occurring in Bashaw,
Red Deer, Sylvan Lake and
Blackfalds.
“My detachment recognized
the need to apprehend these
individuals responsible for a
significant amount of both
property and violent crimes”
says Sergeant Bruce Holliday,
Detachment Commander of
Bashaw RCMP.
“This is a great example of
the benefits of this type of
crime reduction project and
the support provided to rural
detachments in the province.
“This arrest meets the goal
of the crime reduction strategies
we are implementing.”
ECA Review
From my perspective the two human
emotions that are the most damaging
to an individual, to others around
them, and society at large are hate and
anger.
The release of information that in
less than three years, Premier Rachel
Notley has received 11 death threats
and endured 412 hate incidents, some
so vile that they are ‘X’ rated, is truly
disturbing. Most are cowardly threats
on social media depicting photos and
posts to encourage violence against the
Premier.
In the Premier’s case it’s two-fold.
It’s misogynistic, suffered by all
women in politics including Rona
Ambrose and Michelle Rempel of the
Conservative Party, where unsuccessful
men resent powerful women.
But for Premier Notley, it is even
more vicious because she represents
the New Democrat Party. A party vilified
by many nationalists and far right
wing supporters.
Notley’s situation closely parallels
the attitudes of white nationalists and
Tea Party members in the American
Republican Party who not only hate
Democrats but hate the people who
represent them.
Their anger was ferocious when a
‘black’ Democratic President was
elected and Russia’s Putin became
their instant hero when his misinformation
helped defeat the ‘woman’
candidate for President.
Anger and hatred make us do very
irrational and often dangerous things.
A couple years ago, a very fine educated
woman in conversation
repeatedly and angrily said, “I hate
David Suzuki”! The concern coming
from that conversation still resonates
with me.
Why does an intelligent person
become so angry about someone’s
views to turn to intense hatred of a
person?
I can understand and fully support
someone who hates the actions of
people who are destroying human
Limited
rights or killing other humans for personal
power, but because someone’s an
environmentalist!
Personally I’m always amused, as a
creationist, that very intelligent scientific
people can believe this amazing
complex and integral world just
banged into existence. But, alas, that
doesn’t take away from Suzuki or the
work of the scientific community who
have done an amazing job of discovering,
understanding and most
critically today, offering solutions to
curtail global warming.
Sure Suzuki has flaws and if you’ve
ever heard him speak to a live audience,
his arrogance knows no bounds,
but that isn’t a valid reason for hate!
I bring the Suzuki story into the
Premier Notley story because it shows
how easily good people turn to hatred
merely because of someone’s different
religion, ideology, physical attributes
or jealousy. It is so easy to forget that
Suzuki has a wife, children and
grandchildren.
As a student of Alberta Premiers, I
would argue Rachel Notley is one of
the four most honourable and skilled
individuals to ever occupy the
Premier’s chair. Raised in the Peace
Country, receiving her post-secondary
education in Edmonton, her career has
always focused on improving the lives
of others. Personal enrichment has
never been top of her list.
In 2010 she filed so few expense
claims that her total compensation
was $129,857, the second lowest of any
MLA.
When her two children were young,
she worked part-time in order to spend
more time mothering. She is a fine
human being, which should mean
more to us when electing a leader than
personal greed or religious piety.
The truth in this world of fake news
is a person who hates Rachel Notley so
much as to encourage violence against
her has let irrational anger and hatred
skew their moral compass.
Ask yourself? Is ideology really
worth promoting the killing of a
mother and wife?
guest editorial
A tale of two papers
My perspective
Kate Jackman-Atkinson
Editor, myWestman.ca
Neepawa, Mb.
The newspaper industry has a
problem, but it’s not what most people
think.
More than anything else, the newspaper
industry in North America has
an ownership problem. Long known by
those in the industry, the public
watched this story explode a little over
a week ago. The spark? A series of editorials
in the Denver Post blasting
their owners, a hedge-fund called
Alden Global Capital.
What most readers forget, or don’t
know, is that many of the papers they
read are owned by hedge funds or
investment companies. It could be outright,
like the Denver Post, or by
extension, like Postmedia, which has
borrowed so much to fuel its expansion,
it is effectively beholden to its
lenders. This ownership structure
favours profitability at any cost— they
are investors looking to make money
through newspaper ownership, not
newspaper owners looking to make
money.
The Denver Post editorial was
accompanied by a photo of the paper’s
staff in 2013, with the people who have
been lost to cutbacks blacked out. Only
about a third of the people remain.
These cuts are deeper than those faced
by other papers in similar markets and
come even as the company reported
profits within its newspaper division.
Denver isn’t the only place where the
staff is fighting back. Last month, journalists
at two other Alden papers, the
San Jose Mercury News and East Bay
Times, held a public rally at which
they distributed fact sheets about the
“pillaging” of their papers; this month,
staff at the Gannett-owned Knoxville
News Sentinel sent a letter to all of
their subscribers outlining the cuts
their owners have taken since purchasing
the paper in 2015.
Emmy award-winning former CBS
news anchor Dan Rather recently
posted a video about how Wall Street is
Alberta Press Council
Do you have a concern or
complaint about a
newspaper article or ad?
If after bringing your
concerns to the attention of
this newspaper, you are not
satisfied, you may contact
the Alberta Press Council at
www.albertapresscouncil.ca
or toll free in Alberta at
1-888-580-4104 for
information.
killing newspapers. We haven’t seen
this kind of pushback in Canada yet,
but there is no shortage of journalists
who feel their papers are being bled to
death by their return-focused owners.
This week, you’d be hard-pressed to
find a major media outlet that isn’t covering
this story.
Not surprisingly, these cuts severely
impact the quality of the product and
ultimately, readers and advertisers
have been driven away, until the paper
is forced to close. If the paper closes,
the owners don’t really care, as long as
they’ve extracted the maximum profit
from their investment. The problem is
that the closures, which are a result of
mismanagement, help drive that narrative
that the newspaper industry is
dying.
The media industry has changed
and the days of newspapers being a
license to print money have gone, probably
never to return, but that doesn’t
mean that the industry isn’t still viable
or valuable. The reality is that the
industry is starkly divided in two. On
the other side of the corporate behemoths
are the numerous papers that
are independently owned, like ours.
Across Canada and the US, a recent
survey found that 50 per cent of papers
were independently owned and
another 13.5 per cent is part of less
than five paper group, with most of the
work being done locally. These papers
are making a living for their owners
and reinvesting in both the business
and the community. The story of the
large corporately-owned papers isn’t
our story.
Without a doubt, the media landscape
has changed in the last decade
and while many papers have adapted,
some haven’t even tried and some have
be enhampered by owners who really
don’t care about their papers’ future.
The general public doesn’t know about
this and while reporters have long
been trained to keep themselves out of
the news they cover, as cuts deepen
and more papers close, we owe the
public an explanation of what’s really
going on in our industry.
‘This is about people, not power’
Rick Strankman MLA,
Drumheller Stettler
Over 2,600 people met in Red Deer to
participate in the largest political convention
in the 113-year history of
Alberta but more importantly to work
towards bringing back the advantage
that Alberta once had.
With the exodus of investment capital
leaving Alberta in record amounts,
it has never been more important to
repeal and reverse the economically
destructive policies that have been
eliminating what we once called, the
“Alberta advantage.”
During his speech to the party
members, Jason Kenney asked how

many people were attending their first
political convention, and to the astonishment
of many, a third of the people
in the room raised their hands.
It’s apparent that average Albertans
feel the urgency and the importance of
repealing economy-crippling policies
like the carbon tax.
Sunday morning the question was
asked directly of those in attendance if
they wanted the carbon tax repealed, a
whopping 98 per cent voted in favour of
the motion.
Jason Kenney set out on a mission to
bring back the advantage that drew so
many people to make Alberta their
home.
Parliament
His vision for Alberta is what has
drawn so many people that share that
vision of an Alberta that allows us all
the opportunity to make
our own way.
Prior to the UCP
Leader’s speech, former
Saskatchewan Premier
Brad Wall addressed the
record crowd declaring
that “Help is on the way
and hope is on the
horizon,” referring to the
enthusiasm and participation
he witnessed in Red
Strankman
Deer.
The Saskatchewan Party
Representation from coal communities imperative
by Hon. Kevin Sorenson,
M.P., (Battle River-Crowfoot)
The phasing out of coal
has significant ramifications
that must be addressed
by those most affected
Coal-fired electricity and
coal mining has been a
mainstay of many regional
economies in Alberta over
the last 60 years.
In 2014, 55 per cent of
Alberta’s electricity came
from coal with the province
operating 18 coal-fired
power plants including two
in our Riding; Sheerness in
Hanna and Battle
River Power in
Forestburg.
Employing 4,200
people across Alberta
and over 42,000
directly and indirectly
throughout Canada,
the phasing out of
these industries will
have significant
ramifications.
It is therefore, absolutely
imperative that
representation from
Hanna, Forestburg
and other Alberta coalbased
communities be
included in any discussions
or on any task force
designed to identify challenges
and to handle the
transition including new
employment and re-training
for local displaced workers.
Unfortunately, the Liberal
government apparently does
not agree.
On April 25, 2018, the
Federal Government
announced the members of
the Just Transition Task
Force.
According to the government’s
news release, the
purpose of the Task Force is
“to provide the government
with expert advice on how to
make that transition (for
coal workers) a fair one.”
Furthermore, a “just transition
includes involving
workers and their communities
in decisions that would
affect their livelihoods, identifying
and supporting
economic opportunities for
the future, and helping
workers and communities to
succeed and benefit from the
transition.”
Despite this assertion,
“
only one member of the
newly formed Task Force
represents an affected
community.
Rick Smith, a Leduc city
councillor has been
appointed to the Task Force
as have an additional 10
people with outstanding
qualifications.
Without in any way disparaging
those selected, I
strongly believe that at least
half of the appointees should
have come from the most
affected areas as opposed to
only one in 11.
I would encourage
you to pass this message
onto the Hon. Catherine
McKenna, Minister of the
Environment at
Catherine.mckenna@
parl.gc.ca.
Currently, five out of the
11 representatives are from
Ontario; two from Toronto,
two from Ottawa and one
from St. Catherines while
only two are from Alberta.
We need local people to help
solve local challenges!
Parkland County partnered
with Leduc County,
Spruce Grove and Stony
Plain to commission an
independent study on the
socio-economic importance
of this sector to these
communities.
The findings revealed that
the three power plants and
two coal mines in this area:
employ (directly) over 1,600
people; support or induce
another 2,100 plus jobs; contribute
$280 million
annually to the regional
economy in terms of gross
domestic product; contribute
$130 million in
labour income within the
region; pay almost $20 million
in annual property
taxes to Parkland and Leduc
Counties; contribute
(directly and indirectly) to a
wide range of communitybased
programs, services
and infrastructure; and provide
an important source of
off-farm income for many
farming and ranching operations
in the region.
Sixty per cent of
Forestburg’s
economy is based on
the coal industry.
Eighty people are
employed at the
Battle River Mine
and another onehundred
at the
power plant.
Welding shops,
restaurants,
retail stores and
numerous homes were
built in the mid 1950’s
when ATCO first came
to the area.
Those businesses and
the people they employ
will indirectly be
impacted by the loss of
coal-related jobs.
Similarly, Hanna’s
economy is tied to
Sheerness where 200
plus people are employed
at the generating station
or coal mine in wellpaying
jobs.
The town of Hanna has
hired a private consulting
firm to measure the impact
of the loss of these jobs
“
Sorenson
which was originally going
to occur in 2040 but is now
going to happen before 2030.
While I recommend this
impact study be shared with
the Task Force, I also
implore the
Liberal government
to either
replace some of
the appointees or
add representatives
from
Hanna,
Forestburg,
Parkland, Spruce
Grove and Stony
Plain.
Those closest
to the situation
are the best placed to help
these communities succeed
in this transition.
If you agree, I would
encourage you to pass this
message onto the Hon.
Catherine McKenna,
Environment at Catherine.
ADMINISTRATOR
government that was led by Brad Wall
gives us hope that our common sense
conservative principles are the tools
we need to put Alberta at the top
of the list with investors again.
Jason Kenney added that
“Albertans have always been
determined can-do people,”
which is a vision we all know
most Albertans share.
The average Albertan is
looking for a hand up not a hand
out; we would rather do for ourselves,
which is why our
government is committed to fostering
opportunity.
Jason reminded us all what our
focus should be; “This is about people,
not power,” he reminds us to dream
big and to think beyond just becoming
government.
Our goal is to stay humble, be disciplined
and earn every vote that
Albertans feel we’ve earned.
In 2019, a new conservative government
will need to hit the ground
running to work towards getting the
province out of the legislative mud the
NDP have us stuck in.
Alberta produces the most ethical
energy produced anywhere in the
world.
Production in Alberta is done with
stringent environmental regulations
that protect and prevent the environment
from being damaged.
Alberta also respects and protects
the human rights of our workers and
the citizens of the entire province, yet
we are demonized by people determined
to eliminate our opportunities.
Jason’s vision is shared by a great
many people as we saw in Red Deer
and it is also shared by the entire UCP
caucus.
The experience we’ve gained
through the last several years will be
invaluable to understanding and legislating
what needs to be done.
Optometry can detect body health issues
Surprising health conditions your
doctor of optometry can help detect
first.
Seeing your doctor of optometry
regularly?
Albertans may be caught off guard if
their doctor asks this question – and
likely shocked by the number of underlying
conditions an optometrist can
help uncover through a comprehensive
eye exam.
“It’s one of the only opportunities
any health care professional has to
study exposed blood vessels in your
body,” explains Dr. Ward ZoBell. “And
those blood vessels can reveal quite a
lot of information about your general
health.”
A survey completed by the Alberta
Association of Optometrists in April,
2018 revealed that more than 85% of
Albertans are unaware that an eye
exam can reveal serious medical problems
including diabetes, high blood
pressure and even some cancers. Most
believe their optometrist simply checks
their eyes in order to write a new prescription
for glasses or contact lenses.
“Gauging your vision is only a small
part of the exam,” explains Dr. ZoBell.
“For example, we check the blood vessels
at the back of the eye and if we see
weakening or narrowing of the
arteries, it can be a signal of high blood
pressure.”
As well as checking out your blood
vessels, doctors of optometry use special
equipment to look at the tiny
structures at the back of the eye that
often leave clues to dozens of underlying
health issues.
“Diabetes is a common condition
that causes small amounts of bleeding
in the retina,” says Dr. ZoBell. “This is
usually a first indicator of retinopathy
and we see patients on a daily basis
who are living with this condition, who
have yet to be diagnosed with
diabetes.”
Certain types of cancer are also
commonly detected through a comprehensive
eye exam such as malignant
melanoma. “This cancer strikes in
back of the eye, and patients often don’t
even know it is there unless the cancer
is in the centre of their field of vision,”
explains Dr. ZoBell.
If an eye exam uncovers a larger
health issue, your doctor of optometry
will refer you to the appropriate specialist
in the community. As part of
your primary health care team, doctors
of optometry work closely with
family physicians and other health
care providers to help manage your
health, as well as take care of any
vision problems or eye diseases you
may have.
“Routine eye exams play a very
useful role in detecting important
medical issues at their earliest stages,”
says Dr. ZoBell. “In addition to underlying
health issues, we also detect eye
diseases, such as glaucoma, cataracts
and macular degeneration, long before
you may start experiencing any symptoms
like blurry vision or funny circles
around bright lights.”
With regular visits to your optometrist,
75 per cent of vision loss can be
prevented or treated. However, once
damage has occurred, the effects are
usually permanent. The Alberta
Association of Optometrists recommends
that Adults 19-64 have an eye
exam a minimum of every two years,
except for those with pre-existing eye
conditions, family history of eye disease,
systemic disease affecting the
eyes, or contact lens wearers. Seniors
65 and over should have their eyes
examined each year.
Four tips for decorating the top of your kitchen cabinets
In the mood to add some character
to your kitchen? Here are four ways to
embellish that empty space between
your cabinets and ceiling.
1. Add plants
Create a natural environment tailored
to each season by playing up the
space with a beautiful selection of
plants and other types of vegetation.
Opt for tropical plant varieties in the
summer that you’ll replace with
colourful foliage and decorative
gourds and pumpkins come fall.
Garlands of pine are an excellent
choice for the winter season, while
bright, pastel-coloured flowers are
perfect for spring.
2. Display your china
If you have decorative dinnerware,
show it off. You could also use the
empty space above your cabinets to
store your everyday dishes in
colourful fabric baskets.
3. Add wallpaper
Brighten up the space above your
cabinets with wallpaper. Make sure to
choose colours and designs that will
complement the style of your kitchen
nicely.
4. Create a personal library
If you own a collection of books,
keep them on top of your cabinets and
embellish the space with handcrafted
Design the perfect outdoor lounge area!
Oh, how great it feels to relax
around a cozy fire. Do you own an outdoor
fireplace? Per haps you’re
thinking of investing in one? First of
all, make sure that your fireplace complies
with your local bylaws. All set?
Here are several tips for designing the
perfect outdoor lounge area.
First, make sure you’ve dedicated
enough space for your guests to relax
comfortably. Adirondack chairs,
swings, wooden ben ches, wicker
loungers, hammocks — opt for variety!
And don’t forget to include enough
blankets and cushions to create a soft,
cozy environment.
Next, place one or more side tables
around the seating area so that you
and your guests can set down glasses,
plates, phones and any other objects
you prefer to keep close at hand.
Finally, hang garlands of twinkling
lights in your trees, and line the path
between your house and your lounge
area with decorative lanterns. This
way, you’ll create a space that’s not
only warm but also safe to enjoy at
night!
bookends made from kitchen accessories.
You could use a set of antique jugs
or colourful cast-iron cookware, for
example.
Byemoor 4H Beef Club has a busy year
by Addison Charbonneau
Hi. I’m Addison Charbonneau, and I
am the club reporter for the Byemoor
4H Beef club this year.
The Byemoor 4H Beef Club has had
a busy year so far.
We started the year with weigh-in at
Yates Farm, with 10
market steers and one
heifer project.
We also have four
cleaver members this
year.
Some of the activities
that we have done this
year are playing cards
with the seniors in
Byemoor, selling
Christmas trees at
Byemoor Santa Days
and skating for our club
Christmas party.
We held our 4H
speeches on March 1,
and the winners were:
Ray Musgrove for
juniors, Ryan Yates for
intermediate, and
Bailey Musgrove for
Seniors.
As a club, we went to
the 4H judging at the
Canadian Bull
Congress in Camrose,
where we judged rabbits,
guinea pigs and
cattle.
Then we participated
in a scavenger hunt
that was very hard!
The Byemoor 4H Beef club
members along with instructors
at the mock achievement
day are, from the left, back
row: Colin Verbeek, Jacob
Buchwitz, Rachel Yates, Abby
Musgrove, Ryan Yates, Zach
Schilling and Natalie Schilling.
Middle row: Tessa Verbeek,
Addison Charbonneau, Coy
Schilling, Ray Musgrove and
Colter Stirling. Front row:
Jayda Stirling, Alanna Mappin,
Alerie Sorensen and Rylee
Charbonneau.
Charolais bull
sale results
Submitted
In the 37 years the Charolais Banner
magazine has been compiling
Charolais bull sale results. This
spring was the best ever.
From the fall of 2017 to the spring of
2018 there were 96 sales reporting, six
more than in 2017 and the largest
number of animals and sales ever.
The gross was up nearly 1.35 million
dollars, the highest ever. The sale
average was also up from 2017 with
over 3,400 bulls sold averaging $6,160.
Helge By, publisher of the Charolais
Banner magazine cites the increases
to more breeders going to an auction
method compared to private treaty off
the yard, combined with the increased
interest in Charolais bulls, as more
commercial producers realize the
need to crossbreed and receive the premiums
paid for Charcross calves when
selling.
Complete results are available in the
May issue of the Charolais Banner
We also had a halter making and
knot tying afternoon where we all
made our own halters and Ryan
showed us some new knots.
On April 28 we held our Mock
Achievement Day at Sorensen’s farm.
for the day.
After watching a clipping demonstration
We had a mini show after lunch
Tessa and Colin Verbeek of Crossing Creek Cattle, Morinville, Ab. show which areas to clip on ‘Dewey the calf’ at
Sandra Wilson of Munson and
Dawn Parker of Olds could not believe
their luck when they won $100,000 on
the January 29 EXTRA draw.
“I went to the store to get a coffee
and checked the ticket,” said Wilson.
“When I first scanned it, I thought we
won $10,000. I would have been happy
with that.”
“I froze when the cashier told me it
was actually $100,000,” she continued.
“I kept saying, ‘Oh my god! Oh my
god!’”
Parker had a similar reaction to the
happy news.
“I thought Sandra was joking when
she called to tell me,” she said.
Wilson bought the lucky Daily
Grand and Extra ticket at Esso Valley
Is it time for your mammogram? Myths and facts
Alberta Health Services –
Screen Test brings breast
cancer screening to women
across Alberta with its mobile
mammography clinics.
Why should I get a
screening mammogram?
A screening mammogram is a
special X-ray of your breast.
Once you’re over 50, it is the best
way to find breast cancer early.
Screening mammograms can
help find breast cancer when it
is very small, 2-3 years before
you or your doctor can feel it.
The earlier breast cancer is
found the better treatment can
be. In fact most women (about
90%) are now surviving breast
cancer 5 years after diagnosis.
Who should get a screening
mammogram?
Women 50 and over should
plan to have a mammogram
every 2 years and may self-refer.
Women 40-49 should discuss the
risks and benefits of screening
with their doctor, and require a
referral for their first appointment.
There is no cost for this
service. For more information
visit:
www.screeningforlife.ca/
screentest.
Here are some common myths
and facts about breast cancer
screening:
Myth #1: Breast cancer
isn’t very common. In fact, 1
in 8 Alberta women will develop
breast cancer in their lifetime.
Myth #2: Only women with
a family history of breast
cancer will get it. The truth is,
80% of women who develop
breast cancer have no family
history. So it’s important to
understand that you are still at
risk for breast cancer even if no
THERE IS A
NEW
DEALER
IN YOUR AREA
one in your family has ever had
the disease.
Myth #3: Regular mammograms
can’t find small
tumours any sooner than
women could find them
themselves. Screening mammograms
can find small
tumours about 2-3 years before
they can be felt. That’s why
screening is so important — it
can find cancer before it has a
chance to become more serious.
Myth #4: Having a mammogram
can cause breast
cancer or can cause an
already existing cancer to
spread. Mammograms use a
very small dose of radiation.
Research confirms that the risk
of harm from radiation from
mammography is very low. The
benefits of finding and treating
breast cancer early far outweigh
the risk of the small dose of
radiation.
Myth #5: There is nothing
a woman can do to lower her
risk of developing breast
cancer. While it’s true that
there are some things you can’t
control, there are some things
you can do:
Physical Activity – Be physically
active throughout your life
and exercise every day.
Weight – Try to reach or stay
at a healthy body weight. This
becomes even more important
after menopause.
Alcohol – Limit the amount of
alcohol you drink to no
more than one drink per
day.
Smoking – Don’t smoke
and avoid second-hand
smoke. If you’re currently
a smoker, talk to
your healthcare provider
Marilyn was a super wife
and mother, a very doting
granny, an excellent nurse,
the most “fun and crazy”
aunt, an always-there-foryou
sister and a very
independent, amazingly
brave person.
We will always remember
her laughter, her nutty
jokes, her loving compassion
and her ability to get in and
out of the weirdest scrapes.
She was special, unique
and inspirational.
We will really miss her.
