Welcome to our May half term issue, the number one
What’s on Guide for family fun in North and East Riding of
Yorkshire.
The sunshine seems to finally be here as we get ready for the
summer months, and I’m sure we’re all excited for those long
summer evenings, barbeques, ice cream, and family fun in the
sun. In the meantime, the flowers have bloomed, baby animals
are everywhere, and hopefully the weather will stay lovely and
warm for half term!
In this issue we are delighted to bring you loads of brilliant

Summer Reading Challenge
There are plenty of pranks and a ton of fun waiting for you at your local East Riding
Library – it’s Mischief Makers, the Summer Reading Challenge 2018!
Read library books over the summer holidays, join in with our fun themed weekly
activity sessions, collect special stickers and explore your map of Beanotown to find
clues, but watch out – Dennis is usually up to all kinds of mischief. He’ll make sure
some of those stickers are extra stinky!

offers owners and schools a chance to get
involved with the biggest campaign of the
year aimed at improving

Walk to School
Week 2018
Thousands of teachers and
children will celebrate the
benefits of walking as they take
to their feet during this year’s
Walk to School Week (21-25 May
2018).
Walk to School Week is
organised by Living Streets, the
UK charity for everyday walking
and takes place during National
Walking Month each May. Last
year, over 14,000 classes took
part – that’s around 400,000
children walking to school.
Experts advise that children are
active for at least 60 minutes a day to stay healthy but
only one in five 5-15 year olds are achieving this. Rather
than competing for time in the busy school day to
encourage children to move more, the journey to school
provides the perfect opportunity for children to achieve
part of the recommended daily amount of physical
activity before they’ve even reached the school gates.

Pocklington School
Pocklington School gives children the best start by firing their
enthusiasm for learning through an excellent all-round education
focused on the individual. We now welcome three-year-olds to our
relaxed, warm and nurturing Pre-Prep, which follows the Early Years
Foundation Stage and is rich with opportunities to play and socialise.

Looking for something for your
creative, active kids to do over the
half-term break?
Dramarama Days at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre are
themed day-long drama workshops run by theatre professionals, with
two groups, for 4-7s, and 8-12s.
Each workshop runs from 10am to 3pm, and gives your youngsters
chance to have loads of fun, get creative and make new friends. And
friends and family are invited to see the results of their work with a
performance each day at 2.45pm.
The sessions on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 May will be themed
around ‘Secrets and Spies’, inspired by this summer’s production of
The 39 Steps at the SJT.
