Universal commerce demands a new universe of technology solutions.<br />
Go<strong>in</strong>g everywhere Visa wants to be. It’s hard<br />
enough for some bus<strong>in</strong>esses to plan quarter to<br />
quarter. Visa is help<strong>in</strong>g its member f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions “see” many years <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> future.<br />
The vision is called universal commerce—or<br />
uCommerce—a world <strong>in</strong> which payment transactions<br />
will be able to take place anywhere, anytime<br />
and <strong>in</strong> any way. This could be <strong>in</strong> a store, over <strong>the</strong><br />
telephone, via a handheld device or <strong>in</strong>teractive TV,<br />
through a paperless bus<strong>in</strong>ess-to-bus<strong>in</strong>ess transaction<br />
or via boundless o<strong>the</strong>r new payment methods.<br />
Transform<strong>in</strong>g its exist<strong>in</strong>g legacy comput<strong>in</strong>g<br />
systems to handle <strong>the</strong> volume growth and complexity<br />
of this “new world of payments” was an<br />
enormous task. So Visa turned to <strong>Accenture</strong> for<br />
help. Our solution: Visa Direct Exchange, a secure,<br />
scalable, open-system technology platform that<br />
will be <strong>the</strong> network and messag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>back</strong>bone of<br />
Visa’s uCommerce <strong>in</strong>itiatives for years to come.<br />

Initially, <strong>Accenture</strong> and Visa worked toge<strong>the</strong>r to<br />
def<strong>in</strong>e, eng<strong>in</strong>eer and validate <strong>the</strong> Direct Exchange<br />
concept. <strong>We</strong> <strong>the</strong>n helped Visa work with 10<br />
strategic partners to efficiently design, build and<br />
launch Direct Exchange, without <strong>in</strong>terruption to<br />
exist<strong>in</strong>g services. The new system—one of <strong>the</strong><br />
largest of its k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world—is able to grow to<br />
support more than 40 billion transactions per<br />
year, with near-term capabilities of 20,000 transactions<br />
per second. In addition to handl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se<br />
extreme volumes, Visa Direct Exchange provides<br />
buyers and sellers with better <strong>in</strong>formation and<br />
<strong>in</strong>creased security.<br />
