Advanced learning with a family feel: St.
Mary Catholic School in Mokena
St. Mary Catholic School in
Mokena provides a learning environment
where faith, education,
and moral values are promoted
and reinforced. In order to continually
offer students and families
with the latest in educational programming,
last summer the school
underwent a renovation during
the summer break to construct a
new 3-year-old preschool classroom
and contemporary science,
technology, engineering, art and
mathematics classroom. This summer,
school faculty will prepare to
offer additional 3- and 4-year old
preschool classes.
STEAM is a unique approach to
enhance student learning and understanding
of how all things relate
to each other, in school and in
life. It emphasizes the integration
of the arts and offers more creativity
to students in the learning process.
STEAM allows educators to
become more of a facilitator, while
students are given greater choice
and learning becomes about the
process instead of the product.
The STEAM room provides resources
and opportunities to develop
knowledge and meaning
in the process of making art. As
a result, students will be learning
self-motivation, building ideas,
collaboration and higher order approaches
to self-expression.

St. Mary’s is also expanding the
school’s preschool options for local
family members. The 3- and
4-year old classrooms are staffed
by certified teachers and two aides.
The program is meant to introduce
academic learning, a love of coming
