Consecutive state titles a first for GBN math team
Martin Carlino, Editor
When a group of highly
talented individuals unites
to work toward a common
goal, the probability for
success is usually pretty
high.
Glenbrook North’s math
team, a group full of skill,
has long embodied that
sentiment, consistently
producing admirable results
and routinely qualifying
its whole lineup for the
state finals.
And, its track record of
success is one that keeps
growing, each year adding
a new triumph to the list.
True to its nature, the team
added one more signature
touch, one that may even
be considered its greatest
— on May 5, claiming
its second straight state
championship from the Illinois
Council of Teachers
of Mathematics state contest.
As a team, the Spartans
finished first overall, while
also earning first in five
events, second in three and
third in three other events.
Each member of the
27-student team — consisting
of 16 boys and 11
girls — took home at least
two state medals.
At the individual level,
the Spartans had numerous
top-finishers throughout
all competitions.
“I’m proud of the kids
every year when they work
hard no matter what place
they come in, but certainly
when you win a state
championship two years
in a row, other people take
notice and that makes it
more exciting for the kids
and really for the whole
community,” said Steve
Goodman, head coach of
the GBN math team.
After winning the state
The Glenbrook North math team stops for a picture after capturing the Illinois
Council of Teachers of Mathematics Math Contest state championship Saturday, May
5, in Champaign. Photo submitted
championship last year,
several seniors graduated
from the team, which left
a small level of uncertainty
regarding this year’s team.
But, after its first competition
of the season, that
notion was quickly dispelled.
In early November,
the Spartans recorded their
highest score ever in 41
years of competitions.
Key to GBN’s success
this season was leadership
from the team’s upperclassmen.
“A lot of the leadership
actually came from this
year’s junior class,” Goodman
said. “The younger
kids watched those juniors
practice and work on
math outside of class and
watched them talk about
exciting and interesting
problems and things they
learned with each other
and they wanted to be a
part of it.”
For Goodman, watching
members of the team grow
is one aspect of coaching
that will never become old
for him.
“As a teacher, I will often
just see a kid one year
out of their four years ...
but, with the math team, I
get to watch the kids grow
over their four years,” he
said. “I get to know them
pretty well over their four
years and that’s were it’s
very rewarding for me
because I watch the kids
grow ... both as individual
people and as math students.”
After a second consecutive
state title, members
of the team are filled with
pride.
“I just feel really proud
of our team,” senior Shalini
Ramachandra said.
“They’ve worked so hard
to get this. ... It’s heartening
to feel that I get to
leave the school with a
positive impact and know
that we ended on a high
note.”
Junior Siva Muthupalaniappan,
along with other
members of the team,
believe the team’s success
is a testament to its chemistry.
“I think it really shows
how we work together
as teammates,” Muthupalaniappan
said. “We
pushed each other to do
the best that we could.”
And, behind the team’s
chemistry are countless
friendships that have been
built because of participation
with math team.
“I think that the community
that we built as part
of our math team can’t be
characterized as anything
other than a family,” junior
Britney Sun said. “We all
lift each other up.”
GBN senior passes away after brief illness
Sasha
Kristin Megrund, of
Northbrook
After my much loved lab, Buster,
passed away in May 2016, I
swore I’d never get another dog.
But, In July 2016, I adopted a
bonded pair of senior black labs, Sasha 13 years
young, and Sadie, 12 1/2 years young. (Sadly, Sadie
died from mast cell cancer three months later).
Sasha, now 14 1/2 years young, has all the energy of
a puppy! She is my little shadow and loves to follow
me around. She also loves being outside and going
for walks! Sasha has been a great addition to the
family. We recently fostered another senior dog (Lily)
and Sasha was a wonderful ‘big sister.’ My hope is
that others consider local shelters and rescue organizations
as they have some really great dogs!
Staff Report
Michelle Math, a senior
at GBN, passed away
May 8, following a brief
and unexpected illness,
according to a letter
signed by GBN Principal
Dr. John Finan and sent to
Glenbrook students and
parents.
“This is an extremely
difficult time for the entire
Spartan community,”
Finan said in the letter.
“In support of our students
and staff, counselors
and social workers will be
available tomorrow and in
the days following to provide
assistance as needed.
“We ask that you please
keep the Math family in
your thoughts and prayers
during this difficult
time.”
Glenbrook North educator
Bonnie Foster, who
is also a close friend
of the Math family, described
Math as “a ray of
sunshine” and “a phenomenal,
hard-working student,”
who had a passion
for dance and fashion.
According to District
225 officials, Math’s memorial
service was held on
Wednesday, May 16 at St.
Norbert Catholic Church,
Northbrook Village Board
Trustees hear recommendations for property maintenance code updates
Fouad Egbaria
Freelance Reporter
Do you ever have municipal
code on your mind
when you put your trash
out for pickup?
Probably not — but
there is a part of the Village’s
code covering that,
in addition to a number
of other everyday things,
like the length the grass
on your lawn is allowed
to reach before you get a
notice that you are in violation
of municipal code.
The Northbrook Village
Board heard a series
of recommendations
regarding updates to the
Village’s municipal code
related to property maintenance
during its Tuesday,
May 8 meeting, ultimately
deciding by voice
25
vote to approve the updated
documents at a future
board meeting.
Northbrook currently
follows the 2006 version
of the International Property
Maintenance Code,
a standardized body of
guidelines for property
maintenance. Neighboring
Glenview, for example,
uses the 2012 version.
Tom Poupard, the Village’s
director of development
and planning
services, overviewed the
Architectural Control
Commission’s recommendations
with respect to updating
the municipal code.
He said staff also recommended
adopting the 2015
version of the International
Property Maintenance
Code — which is updated
every three years.
“There aren’t a tremendous
amount of new regulatory
changes in there but
over time … the language
is improved, it’s more
specific, it’s better for enforcement,”
Poupard told
the board.
Poupard added that in
crafting recommendations,
they have focused
on the most-received
complaints. According
to data included in the
board packet for the Tuesday
meeting, there were
92 complaints related to
grass and weeds in 2016,
the most of any complaint
type. This subgroup of
complaints also led the
way in 2017, when there
were 93 complaints related
to grass and weeds.
Meanwhile, in 2016
construction-related complaints
came in second
(76), while complaints
related to outdoor garbage
and debris came in third
(23).
“While we are fortunate
that we do not [have]
widespread problems with
property maintenance in
Northbrook, we do believe
several of the code
standards could be written
so as to be more understandable
and in some
cases, realistic (for instance,
the standards for
garbage cans in the Municipal
Code),” Poupard
wrote in a March 3 memo
to the Architectural Control
Commission.
Grass, pool maintenance,
fencing and composting
were among the
areas mentioned by Poupard
and addressed in the
proposed amendments.
For example, current
code says a property
owner is in violation if the
grass on his or her property
reaches 10 inches
tall. The proposed amendment
suggests bringing
that down to 8 inches, as
Poupard cited length restrictions
in other nearby
Illinois communities and
the fact that the lower
height allows the Village
to address a grass length
issue before it becomes a
more serious problem.
In setting up an explanation
of trash pickup recommendations,
Poupard
said many of the households
on his block were
in fact in violation of the
municipal code this week
because trash bins had
been placed on the street
the night before trash day.
According to the code,
trash bins must be put out
to the street the day of collection
and removed the
same day. Poupard said
the recommendation is to
amend the code to allow
for trash bins to be placed
the night before a pickup
day.
The recommendations
also include guidance on
boarded-up properties,
stating doors and windows
can only remain boarded
up for a maximum of 90
days (unless an extension
is granted).
As for non-compliance,
the recommendations also
included a fee schedule
for violations, which go
as such for each violation
in the same code section:
•$50-$100 for a first
violation
•$100-$150 for a second
violation within the
same year
•$200-$750 for each additional
violation within
the same year
•$200-$750 for the
same violation (regardless
of time frame)
The Architectural Control
Commission’s full list
of proposed code amendments
can be found in
the agenda packet for
the meeting, which can
be accessed on the Village’s
website by visiting
the Agendas & Minutes
page and navigating to
May 8 Board of Trustees
meeting.

throughout the four years,
while benefit changes are
projected to be cost neutral.
It replaces a four-year
contract that ran through
the 2016-17 school year
and then was extended
through the current school
year.
Negotiations began
in October and ended in
April, and both sides expressed
great satisfaction
with the result.
“I strongly believe
working with you taught
us all a lot and moved us
all in the right direction,”
said David Karnoscak,
vice president of the Education
Association and
a fifth-grade teacher at
Wescott School.
“We had a collaborative
process, one I’m proud
of,” said Chuck Gitles,
president of the School
Board. “We have a high
degree of respect and appreciation
for all that our
teachers give. This contract
provides raises that
are in line with those of
comparable districts. We
believe this contract is
fair to our teachers and
responsible to our community.”
Talia Block, president
of the Education Association,
wasn’t present at the
meeting, but in a press release
announcing the contract
agreement, she said
her organization “looks
forward to continuing the
collaborative relationship
with the school board,
working together for the
best interest of the children,
families and teachers
of the district.”
Harassment policy
enshrined in district code
A new policy prohibiting
workplace harassment
received its first
reading.
“It’s a new policy recommended
by (legal)
counsel,” explained District
30 Superintendent
Dr. Brian Wegley. “Not
that it is different than
what we’ve done in the
past, but now it is codified.”
Board recognizes students,
community leaders
Three winners in the
Character Counts essay
contest were recognized
by the board: Maple
seventh-grader Fiona
Yin, Maple eighth-grader
Sophia Pinc and Maple
eighth-grader Hallie
Baer.
The board recognized
and thanked the co-presidents
of the Parent/Teachers
Organizations at the
three District 30 schools:
Dianne Larsen and Tara
Wesselink at Maple;
Christie Hartbarger and
Warm weather brings pink flamingos to Northbrook
Village invites
residents to
Flamingo Friday
May 18
Submitted by the Village
of Northbrook
The Community Relations
Commission will
host a combined Welcome
to Northbrook and Flamingo
Friday event from
5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday,
May 18, at Northbrook
Village Hall.
The annual Flamingo
Friday and Welcome to
Northbrook lawn party is
scheduled just in time to
kick-off summer fun.
Representatives from
the Village, Public Library,
Park District, and
Police and Fire Departments,
as well as other
community organizations
will be in attendance to
help new and seasoned
residents learn about
services in the Village
of Northbrook. Refreshments
will be served. Stop
by to meet your neighbors
and public officials.
Residents are encouraged
to participate in the
Community Relations
Commission’s popular
Flamingo Friday “meet
your neighbors” program.
Flamingo Friday participants
will be able to pick
up their neighborhood’s
plastic pink flamingo at
the May 18 event.
The Northbrook Community
Relations Commission
sponsors Flamingo
Fridays to promote neighborliness,
public safety and
just plain fun for all ages.
What are Flamingo
Fridays? Flamingo Fridays
provide a way to
connect with neighbors
in a completely casual
atmosphere. It is a wellestablished
fact that when
neighbors get to know
each other and their children,
an improved sense
of support, understanding,
well-being, and safety are
the result.
How does it work? Every
Friday evening, starting
around 6 p.m., from
Memorial Day through
Labor Day, a neighborhood
gathering will be
held at someone’s home.
The host provides the
driveway or backyard.
Everyone brings their
own lawn chairs, beverages,
kids, and snacks, if desired.
Gatherings last 30
minutes or several hours,
depending on the group
assembled on any given
Friday evening.
Where do the flamingos
come in? Whoever volunteers
to host the Flamingo
Friday gathering, obtains
a plastic lawn flamingo
from the previous host
and displays it on their
lawn starting the Monday
or Tuesday before the
weekend event. No fuss,
no RSVPs, no pressure, no
strings. Attend once, twice
or as often as you please.
Residents enjoy a previous Flamingo Friday outside Village Hall. Photo Submitted
Each neighborhood needs
only one flamingo, as it is
passed from driveway to
driveway each week.
Where do I get the flamingos?
Pink flamingos
can be obtained from the
Village Hall, along with a
how-to-get-started information
sheet. Or, download
the info sheet and a
flyer at www.northbrook.
il.us/flamingo
Flamingos will be
available to residents
free of charge at the Flamingo
Friday event on the
lawn of Village Hall from
5:30 to 7:00 p.m., Friday,
May 18.
The Northbrook Fire Department is just one of the many organization that will be present
at the annual Flamingo Friday and Welcome to Northbrook lawn party on May 18.
from the village
Fire Department
On May 1, the Northbrook
Master Bicycle and
Pedestrian Plan update
On May 2, the Village
hosted the second Open
House for the Master
Bicycle and Pedestrian
Plan. At the Open House,
the Village’s consultant
and staff received feedback
from the public to
incorporate into the final
Plan. The Village Board’s
Public Works Committee
will discuss the updated
Plan at its next meeting
scheduled for Tuesday,
THE LAKE FOREST LEADER
Alderman Tack ends
term after 6 years, new
alderman sworn in
The Lake Forest City
Council said goodbye to
Alderman Randy Tack and
hello to a new alderman at
its Monday, May 7 meeting.
Three aldermen who
were re-elected in the
March 20 municipal election
were sworn into their
positions at the meeting:
Prue Beidler (First Ward),
Tim Newman (Second
Ward) and Michelle Moreno
(Fourth Ward).
New Alderman Jim Preschlack
(Third Ward) was
also sworn into his position
at the meeting after
being elected in the March
20 municipal election.
Preshlack replaced Tack
on the council.
Tack served six years on
the council, as long as he
was allowed to serve due
to a limit of three two-year
terms. Tack credited the
city staff for helping him
learn the ins and outs of
city government.
“Over the past six
years, it’s been an amazing
thing to do,” Tack
said. “I learned so much
about how the city works.
The city is unbelievably
well run. These people are
great at what they do. They
love what they do. Things
I knew nothing about, I
could sit with them for 15
minutes and I’d know everything
about it.”
During his time as third
ward alderman from May
2012 to May 2018, Tack
served as a member of the
City Council and Finance
Committee and chairman
of the Public Works
Committee; served on the
Property and Public Lands
Committee; and was liaison
for his co-workers on
more complex investigations,”
Police Chief Kyle
Seeds of the future
Wescott,
Willowbrook fourthgraders
learn the
value of trees
Submitted by District 30
Representatives from
the Glenview Lions Club
visited fourth-graders at
Wescott and Willowbrook
to share information about
tree care and distribute
Norway spruce saplings on
Arbor Day, April 27.
The saplings were provided
by the Fourth Grade
Foresters, an organization
that aims to revitalize the
celebration of Arbor Day
in schools. The group has
planted more than one million
trees nationwide since
2007.
Terry Dooley, a member
of the Glenview Lions
Club, told the fourthgraders
that “now, in the
era of global warming
and air pollution, tree
planting is even more
important than ever.
Trees take carbon dioxide
out of the atmosphere
to help reduce warming
and help clean the air we
breathe. Planting trees is
a simple, inexpensive and
easy way to address the
problem.”
Glenview Lions Club volunteer Anne Gardner discusses the importance of the seeds
with Willowbrook fourth-graders (left to right) Jeff Cho, Peter Demos and Ben Meyer.
Staff Report
To promote Pitch Night,
an entrepreneurship video
contest, Glenbrook North
students visited Field Middle
School on April 30.
GBN’s Business INCubator
course is designed
to provide students entrepreneurship
experience by
creating their own product
or service business. More
than 30 business professionals
from the community
volunteer in the classroom
to guide students on areas
of market research, marketing,
accounting and law.
The year culminates with
Pitch Night, GBN’s very
own “Shark Tank,” where
student teams pitch to actual
investors in hopes of winning
funding to turn their
business plans into reality
the following school year.
The entrepreneurship
video contest is open to all
Northbrook students grades
6-12. The challenge of it all;
come up with a business,
whether it be a product or
service, to create a solution
for a problem in the community.
Five finalists will
be notified via email and
Instagram and the winner
will be chosen by audience
vote at GBN’s Pitch Night
on May 23. The winner(s)
will receive $100 to start
annual Lew Blond
Memorial 5K
Staff Report
When he first began
teaching at Maple School,
Lew Blond was in charge
of woodworking.
Over the next 17 years,
he expanded the class to
include drafting, jewelry
design and wielding, and
became greatly admired
by colleagues, students
and parents for his dedication
and talent as an educator.
In February 2000,
Blond passed away from
Lou Gehrig’s Disease. In
honor of his memory, a
group of teachers from
Maple School came together
to hold the first
Lew Blond Memorial 5K
run/walk during the summer
of that same year, to
help raise awareness and
funds to benefit ALS research.
The annual 5K, which
takes place on a 3.2-mile
flat and scenic course
through the neighborhood
surrounding Maple
School, celebrates its 18th
anniversary this year.
The event will begin at
8 a.m. on Saturday, May
19, at Maple School, 2370
Shermer Road, Northbrook.
A portion of the
funds are allocated for
2018 scholarships to graduating
seniors at GBS and
GBN.
Volunteers for the two
days prior are also needed
to make the event a success.
Wescott’s Amazing Race fosters
teamwork, sportsmanship
Submitted by District 30
Wescott students competed
in Northbrook/Glenview
School District 30’s
version of the CBS reality
show “The Amazing
Race” on April 24 and 26.
During the seventh annual
competition, Wescott
students worked in teams
of six or seven while traveling
to different parts of
the world, represented by
different sections of the
athletic areas and playground,
to complete various
physical challenges
unique to each country or
city.
“The goal of the [event]
was to foster teamwork,
cooperation and sportsmanship,”
said Roy Grober,
a wellness and physical
education teacher at
Wescott. “We encouraged
each team to work toward
completing the entire race,
which included 10 different
challenges.”
April 25 after receiving his doctorate. PHOTO SUBMITTED
Wescott School Principal
Chris Brown earned
his doctorate from Loyola
University in Chicago after
successfully defended
his 195-page dissertation
on April 24.
“District 30 exists to
create a community that
craves learning, fosters resiliency
and cares deeply
for every child,” said Superintendent
Dr. Brian Wegley.
“Over the past several
years, Wescott’s principal
has exemplified continuous
learning and perseverance
as he has completed his
doctorate. I know the entire
District 30 family joins
me in congratulating Dr.
Brown on this significant
accomplishment.”
Brown began his tenure
at District 30 in 2010 as
Maple School’s assistant
principal. He was named
principal of Wescott in
2014.
His educational background
include a Bachelor’s
Degree in Music
Education and Music Performance
from Ithaca College,
a Master’s Degree
in Music Education from
Northwestern University,
and an administrative certificate
from Loyola University.
The title of his dissertation
was “Mentoring the
Millennial: Induction of
the Millennial Generation
in Education.”
The day after defending
his dissertation, Brown
was serenaded by the entire
school as he walked
the halls with Wegley. Students
and staff members
clapped their hands and
chanted, “Dr. Brown, Dr.
Brown, Dr. Brown.”
On April 26, the District
30 Board of Education
honored him with cake and
kind words.
An early look at summer fun
Martin Carlino
martin@northbrooktower.com
As rain poured
down and temperatures
dipped way
lower than they should be
at this time of the year,
I couldn’t help but set
my sights on better times
ahead.
In my defense, it was
hard not to do so, especially
after putting the
finishing touches on our
annual summer fun guide
calendar — which you
should keep an eye out for
in the coming weeks.
So, in light of my
optimistic thinking, and
maybe yours as well,
here’s an early look
ahead at just some of the
countless great events
throughout Northbrook
this summer.
• St. Norbert Block Party
Opt in for fun at this
classic start of summer.
The annual block party at
St. Norbert (Walters Avenue
and Meadow Road)
features activities beginning
at 8 a.m. June 9, with
a kids fun run and a 5K.
Afternoon festivities start
at 3 p.m. And, live bands
will be performing all day.
For more information,
visit stnorbertblockparty.
org
• Northbrook’s Fourth of
July Parade
Does any event bring
out the best of summer
quite like the Fourth of
July? This annual tradition
will bring floats through
downtown Northbrook.
Make sure to keep an eye
out for more information
as this gets closer. A full
lineup of festivities should
be announced in early
June.
• Second annual Eggfest
You’ll want to bring
your appetite for this one.
Come and taste creations
from various chefs on
Sunday, July 7, near the
Ace Hardware parking
lot in Northbrook. With a
year of experience under
its belt, you won’t want to
miss year two.
• Northbrook Days
Few events can bring
together the Northbrook
community quite like
Northbrook Days. Volunteers
across the community
come together
for five days and put on
an exciting festival for
residents of Northbrook
and surrounding towns.
This year’s annual festival
will take place Aug. 1-5,
giving you plenty of time
to stop by for some summer
fun.
We could fill up pages
of The Tower with all the
summer events happening
throughout Northbrook.
Unfortunately, we can’t
do so here, but in just a
few weeks, you’ll find our
full list of summer events
in print. And for even
more fun, you’ll find extra
events online at NorthbrookTower.com.
An intriguing number from this week’s edition
searching for a new team
for more than a year.
“There is a decline in the
number of draft horses, so
good teams are difficult to
find,” said Todd Price, director
of Historic Wagner
Farm.
Bill and Bob stand about
17.2-hands high and each
weigh in at just over a ton.
They’re Percheron geldings,
9 and 10 years old.
Percherons are an aweinspiring
breed, known for
their intelligence and muscular
appearance.
“Going into the search,
there were a number of criteria
that were important to
us,” Price said. “Disposition,
age, gender, farm and
wagon experience, and
good with people. Bill and
Bob checked all of those
boxes and more.”
The brothers are from an
Amish farm in Minnesota
and have worked in teams
of two-, three- and fourhorse
hitches in a public
setting and alone on the
farm. The goal is to transition
them into the primary
team at Wagner Farm.
Freelance Reporter
Music, dance, ethnic
dress, food and folklore all
mixed together for an enjoyable
afternoon of learning
how much alike everyone
is, while discovering
the unique traditions of the
many cultures of Northbrook
residents.
The Northbrook Community
Relations Commission
held its third annual
Celebration of Cultures
festival May 6 at Northbrook’s
North Suburban
YMCA, offering a colorful,
fun and informative display
of diversity.
“This event is important
because it awakens us to
the diversity in our community,”
said Helena Osori,
co-chair of the Celebration
of Cultures. “It also
gives Northbrook residents
an opportunity to comes
together, meet their neighbors
and learn more about
their cultures that exist and
break down any barriers.”
Chris Beeftink, who
served along Osori as a cochair,
shared his thoughts
about the importance of
event.
“The more we learn
about each other and their
cultures, the more we can
humanize the people we
see every day in our lives.
It is so important,” Beeftink
said.
Visitors to the event had
much to see and do.
Northbrook residents
displayed ethnic clothing,
food samples, photos and
other artifacts from their
ancestral countries at stations
in the NSYMCA
gym.
Northbrook’s Dr. Emmeline
Hazaray came dressed
in a green and gold native
dress decorated with gold
appliqués called a Kurta
Churidar, with a coordinating
scarf-like item wrapped
around her shoulders and
neck referred to as a Dupatta.
“I represent incredible
India,” Hazaray said. “I
think once people learn and
know about others’ cultures
and countries, they can
become more civil toward
each other.”
Carolyn Vogel, a registered
nurse and member
of Northbrook’s Village
Church, represented the
medical mission trips she
and others took to Chiapas,
Mexico. Many of the items
at her station represented
the Mayan culture of the
country.
“We [church members]
went down there and built
a clinic,” Vogel said. “The
poorest of the poor live
there. The people are so
grateful for anything we
can do for them. It changed
my life forever. I now go
there on my own and have
for many years. This cultural
celebration helps others
see what other parts of
the world are like and how
they live.”
Stella Pillay and Robin
Sluzas brought Oakton
Community College’s
Muslim Student Association
members, who participated
in the event. They
offered samples of homemade
Samosa, a peas and
potatoes like dumpling,
along with sweets.
“When people learn
about different cultures,
they learn more about
themselves,” Pillay said.
“I am passionate about
getting the message out
concerning who Muslims
truly are,” said Amena
Hashmi, president of the
Muslim Student Association.
“There is a big community
[of Muslims] in
Chicago. People are curious
and ask many questions.
In general, they are
very respectful. We hope
others are reciprocating
that respect.”
Members of the Muslim
Student Association
offered the art of henna
tattooing, which are temporary.
The ink used is dye
made from a henna leaf. It
was a popular event among
visitors as was evident by
the long line of children
and adults wanting a tattoo.
Bijan Bayzaee, with
the Iran House of Greater
Chicago, talked about his
native country, its diversity,
cultures and languages
Julianna, 7, and her dad, Tony Handzel, learn how to
of Cultures held at the North Suburban YMCA. Scott
spoken in the northern area
as opposed to the southern
part of Iran.
“The diversity in Iran,
once called Persia, is reflected
in the diversity of
the world,” Bayzaee said.
“We hope people appreciate
that we are all one
family. The earth is our
homeland and we are its
citizens.”
Outside by the food
trucks, Aleido Chavez and
Jose Silva made the Venezuelan
version of snow
NATIONAL
cones, Raspados, a popular
item. In addition to the
ice and syrup, they added
sweetened condensed milk
for more flavor.
Wilmette’s Piero’s offers familiar pizza affair
Michal Dwojak
Sports Editor
People in the Chicagoland
area take their pizza
seriously.
Whether it’s Fridaynight
dinner or just something
that’s quick and
easy to get, pizza seems
to always be the right
choice.
For nearly 30 years,
Piero’s Pizza, located at
335 Ridge Road in Wilmette,
has satisfied those
pizza needs of not only
people from Wilmette, but
others in the North Shore.
From the classic wooden
walls to the smell of fresh
pizza baking in the ovens,
Piero’s is exactly what
you imagine when you
think of a neighborhood
pizza place.
The pizzeria opened in
the strip mall when the
Caporossi family bought
a pizzeria that had been
open for a couple months.
From there, they used their
family recipes for pizzas,
pastas and other specialties
to become a Wilmette
classic that people can’t
give up.
“I think we have a
strong following,” Mary
Caporossi said. “We have
customers who moved to
Mundelein who still come
to pick up pizza and those
who moved to Wisconsin
[that] when they’re [back]
pick up pizzas.”
The reason people come
back isn’t hard to see. The
family uses fresh ingredients
for everything they
make, which gives the
food a taste that’s hard to
replicate and leaves people
wanting more.
“Everything that you eat
is cut today,” Caporossi
said. “We cut the green
peppers in the morning,
the onions, the mushrooms,
everything is cut
The Piero’s Special has sausage, green peppers,
onions and mushrooms in a stuffed pie.
Another option for the stuffed pizza is a chopped
spinach topping.
from that day. Nothing is
out of a can or a box.”
The family has also
adapted to the times.
While both types of pizza
are very popular with
customers, Caporossi has
noticed that customers
look for thinner options to
avoid carbs. The pizzeria
also has a gluten-free pizza
that has been specially developed.
One of the major changes
in the past months has
been a new sauce. Released
six months ago, the
new sauce features extra
virgin olive oil and Parmesan
and has taken off with
customers.
“It’s just something different;
it just took off,”
Caporossi said. “We’ve
tried it and some people
liked it more and call for
it, so we thought let’s put
in on the menu.”
The local establishment
will seek a new location
though. The owners of the
strip mall where the pizzeria
resides plan to tear the
building down and place
an elderly residence in its
place. Piero’s will have to
move by July and is seeking
a place close to downtown
Wilmette to continue
serving its loyal customers.
But that doesn’t mean
saying goodbye will be
easy.
“It’s going to be the
saddest day of my life,”
The thin vegetarian pizza features a variety of seven different vegetables at Piero’s
Pizzeria in Wilmette. Photos by Megan Bernard/22nd Century Media
A thin-crust Piero’s pizza with sausage and pepperoni. Customers can choose
between the new sauce and the original.
Caporossi said.
A group of editors from
22nd Century Media decided
to try the pies for
ourselves, and boy was
there a lot. We started with
the spinach-stuffed pizza
($13.45), which provided
a good vegetarian option
where customers can be
like Popeye and taste the
fresh spinach.
Editors also sampled the
Piero’s Special ($16.95),
which features sausage,
green peppers, onions and
mushrooms in a stuffed
pie. Each bite included
the fresh vegetables that
Caporossi mentioned,
which made for a full bite
each time.
Caporossi also prepared
a thin vegetarian pizza
($18.95) for the group.
The pizza consists of seven
different vegetables:
onions, mushrooms, green
peppers, black olives, garlic,
tomatoes and spinach.
Even though there were
plenty of different tastes,
it all blended well together
with the sauce.
Finally, we sampled the
original and new sauces on
a thin-crust, half-sausageand-half-pepperoni
pie,
and everyone agreed they
could see what the buzz
was about for the new
sauce.

10 Questions
with Holt Oliphant
Oliphant is a major contributor
for the Glenbrook
North boys lacrosse team.
When and why did you
start playing lacrosse?
I started playing lacrosse
freshman year and it was
just something I wanted
to play and never got the
chance to. It seemed really
fun to me
What do you like most
about the sport?
I love the speed and the
physicality.
Do you have any
superstitions before a
game?
I go to the bathroom
with about three minutes
left before the start of the
game. It started when I
was 8 with hockey and that
just carried over.
The Spartans offense exploded
but it didn’t need so
many runs thanks to Lauren
Mendelson’s second
no-hitter of the year.
What is your favorite
sports moment?
It was qualifying for nationals
at hockey. It was a
cool experience.
If you were a superhero,
what superpower would
you want?
I would want to be able
to shape shift so I could
breathe under water and
fly, do all that stuff.
What would you do if you
won the lottery?
I would buy a nice house
and then save a lot of the
money for future purposes.
What is one thing people
don’t know about you?
Most people don’t know
that Holt is my middle
name and my first name is
Raymond.
If you could play another
sport what sport would
it be?
I would want to ski. I
love going fast and the
speed of going down a
mountain. It seems really
cool to be a skier.
Submitted Photo
What is one thing on your
bucket list?
I want to go to a Game
7 of the Stanley Cup Final.
If you could be any
animal, which would you
choose?
I would be an eagle because
they fly and you’re
the king of the sky.
Junior Sydney Kunkler
came into the sectional as
the two-time defending
sectional champion in the
triple jump but had a feeling
that this year would
be different. A week after
the conference meet, she
came back to win the sectional
season, jumping 36
feet, eight inches to beat
her Evanston opponent by
nearly a foot. Her jump in
both the long and triple
“There was definitely
more pressure on me this
isn’t a good thing for
Kunkler, who would
Spagnoli and his team
have been happy with
their sectional finishes but
are looking to place in the
top 10 at the state meet
and know that if they want
to do that, they’ll have to
focus on being the best
“The thing now is you
don’t wanna say is right
now the only reason we’re
here is to go downstate
sixth-place teams
finished within five points
of each other, including
Loyola, which took fifth
place, five points behind
freshmen in there who
ran the fastest they’ve run
in their life and that was
enjoyable to watch,” Simon
said. “Our four-bytwo
team was awesome.
It’s the second-best time
we’ve run in school history.”

Northbrook’s Hardy
prepares for pro career
Alan P. Henry
Freelance Reporter
As Glenbrook North and
University of Illinois golf
star Nick Hardy prepares to
tee it up for his first start as
a professional in the Rust-
Oleum Championship on
June 4 at the Ivanhoe Club
in Mundelein, the game
plan is to stay within himself.
“I’m going to prepare for
it just like any other tournament,”
said the 22-year-old
Northbrook native. “I’m
going to keep all my variables
the same or as similar
as possible, and keep my
routine the same. It’s been
working for me so I am going
to keep doing that.”
Hardy, who is completing
his senior year at Illinois,
will officially turn pro
at the Web.com Tour event,
where he has received a
sponsor invitation, following
the NCAA Men’s Golf
Championship.
“I’ve had a great college
experience at the University
of Illinois and have
learned a lot from Coach
[Mike] Small,” said the
two time individual Big
Ten champion. “I look forward
to moving on to the
next phase of my golf career.
I know how valuable a
sponsor exemption is and I
am very appreciative to the
Rust-Oleum Championship
for giving me this opportunity.”
Hardy’s caddie in the
Rust-Oleum Championship
will be Eric Markus,
who was a junior champion
and a teammate of Hardy’s
on the GBN golf team.
Markus has been Hardy’s
caddie since 2013.
Tournament Director
Scott Cassin called Hardy
Nick Hardy will make his pro debut on June 4. 22nd
Century Media File Photo
one of “the finest young
players to come out of the
state of Illinois in decades”
and said he expected him
“to compete at high level
and use the tournament as
a springboard to future success.”
Of the course at Ivanhoe,
which Hardy has played,
he said: “It is a really good
driving golf course. If you
drive it well, you will set
yourself up for some birdie
chances.”
Hardy is literally a homegrown
talent, who had a
golf club in his hand almost
as soon as he could walk
and played in his first tournament
when he was nine.
“Anetsberger Golf
Course and Sportsman’s
were the two courses I
played at until I got to high
school,” he said. One of his
favorite holes at Sportsman’s
is the par-5 17th. “I
was just trying to get over
the water in two. Now, I am
just trying to hit the green
in two, and it is a tough
green to hit.”
Hardy’s resume is an impressive
one.
The 2014 GBN graduate
made the cut at the 2015
U.S. Open at Chambers
Bay after winning the Big
Ten Championship and being
named Big Ten Freshman
of the Year.
He tied for 52nd as a
sophomore with a 10-over
par 290 at the Open, beating
out the likes of Phil
Mickelson, Ernie Els and
Luke Donald, as well as
dozens of professionals, including
Tiger Woods, who
didn’t make the cut. Hardy
had a poor third round,
shooting a 77, but rebounded
with a 68 in the fourth
and final round, which was
better than eventual champion
Jordan Spieth’s score
in that round.
“It gave me a lot of confidence
and proved to me
that I can compete at the
highest level, and I’ve gotten
a lot better since then,”
said Hardy.
In 2016, he qualified for
the U.S. Open and played
in the Rust-Oleum Championship
on a sponsor’s
exemption. In 2017, Hardy
made the cut at the PGA
TOUR’s John Deere Classic
in the Quad Cities.
In top amateur events,
he made the Western Amateur’s
prestigious Sweet
Sixteen three times.
Softball
Smart baserunning leads
to Spartan win over Giants
David Jaffe
Freelance Reporter
A lot of things went well
for Glenbrook North on
Thursday, May 10 at Highland
Park.
But what got the Spartans
(11-12, 5-5) going
early was their aggressiveness
on the bases.
GBN stole six bases and
advanced several more
runners on passed balls,
putting them in scoring
position early.
Then the bats came alive
with a seven-run second
inning as they dominated
en route to a 13-0 five inning
win.
Nicole Pyke put GBN
on the board, scoring on
a passed ball in the top of
the first after she had stolen
second earlier.
“It was pretty important
to run the bases the way
we did today,” Pyke (3 for
4) said. “They’re a pretty
good team so we knew we
had to come out strong. I
think running the bases aggressively
helped set the
tone.”
“We always try to be
aggressive on the bases,”
GBN coach Bridget Matsunaga
said. “We have a
lot of quick players at the
top of our lineup so we
try to use that to our advantage.
And we wanted
to get off to a good start.
One of our last games we
gave up seven runs early
to Vernon Hills so we
know it can come back to
bite you if you don’t get
early runs.”
Then GBN’s offense
erupted in the second inning.
The Spartans scored
on another passed ball,
making it 2-0. Three
straight RBI singles from
Lauren Cole, Nicole Amen
and Pyke followed, increasing
the advantage
to 5-0. Victoria Nagle
reached on an error that
scored two more runs
and Julia Navarro’s RBI
groundout made it 8-0.
“We got a lot of girls
opportunities to have atbats,”
Matsunaga said.
“We had solid line drives
and did a good job waiting
on certain pitches. Highland
Park’s pitcher has a
good changeup so we did
a good job of fouling those
pitches off and working
the count.”
The Spartans scored
three more in the third on
a two-run single by Nagle
and a sacrifice fly by
Lauren Mendelson. GBN
completed its scoring in
the fourth when two runs
scored on an error that allowed
Hannah Nyren to
reach first.
On the mound Mendelson
and Emily Szczepkowicz
combined for
a shutout. While GBN
knows what they’re getting
from Mendelson, its
regular starter, Sczepkowicz
pitched three innings
giving up two hits and
walking three. She faced
tough situations with the
Giants loading the bases in
the third and getting runners
to second and third in
the fifth but she ultimately
came out of both jams unscathed.
“This was the first game
Emily’s pitched in this
year,” Pyke said. “I was
glad to see her get the
opportunity to pitch. She
may have been a little
nervous but I think she
was mostly excited to get
the chance to be out there
and we were excited for
her. Our defense was really
good today and were
able to make the routine
plays so I think that really
helped as well.”
“Emily’s only a sophomore,”
Matsunaga said.
“To come in after Lauren
can be intimidating. But
she came in with the right
attitude and said I got this.
She did well and it was a
courageous performance.
The defense behind her
did a good job helping her
out, too.”
Highland Park had runners
on in every inning. In
addition to having good
chances in the third and
fifth, the Giants got a runner
to third in the first inning.
They were just unable
to bring them in.
“We had some good hits
but hit a lot of balls right to
them,” Highland Park assistant
coach and assistant
athletic director Colleen
Boilini said. “The last time
we played them we scored
three runs right away. But
I think overall we hit the
ball better today. We just
couldn’t advance the runners.”
GBN’s big inning put
things away and it started
with how they ran the bases.
“We got pretty flustered
during that second inning,”
Boilini said. “When they
scored seven runs in that
inning, you could kind of
tell that we got flustered.
Our pitcher Lydia (Taylor)
has thrown the ball well all
year. But they hit the ball
well and were running every
chance they had.”

Girls soccer
Spartans fall to Trevians in conference championship
Michal Dwojak, Sports Editor
A span of a couple
minutes can change the
outcome of a game, and
sometimes, a championship.
That came into fruition
when Glenbrook North
and New Trier battled it
out for the Central Suburban
League Championship
on May 8. The
Spartans used the first two
minutes of the game to
set the tone in what they
hoped would be enough
to surprise one of the best
teams in the nation, but
the Trevians used four
minutes at the end of the
first half and beginning
of the second to eliminate
any hope of a GBN upset,
defeating the Spartans
3-1.
“There were flashes of
really good things and I
think it’s all about putting
together an 80-minute
game to play these types
of steep competition later
come playoff time,” GBN
head coach Craig Loch
said.
GBN started the home
championship game with
an impressive start when
Alyssa Nekritz scored
just over a minute into the
game and surprise New
Trier. The Spartans didn’t
let up, though, creating
different offensive opportunities,
but also limiting
what the Trevians tried to
run.
North ran a 4-4-2,
something New Trier
hadn’t defended against
this season and proved
to provide some problems.
The Trevians tried
to push the ball deep into
the GBN zone, but whenever
they got there, the
Spartans defenders had a
solution and made sure
the ball didn’t make its
way toward the goal.
But then New Trier put
it together.
The comeback started
in the 37th minute of
the game when Fallon
Warshauer scored on a
dribbler that just made
it past the GBN goalkeeper.
Then Nicole
Kaspi changed the pace
completely when she
scored on a rebound that
bounced off of Spartans
goalie Ellie Scott.
Meredith Nassar scored
with 25:53 left in the
game to add one more insurance
goal.
“I think going into it,
we knew GBN was an
amazing team,” Kaspi
said. “During the game,
we were shaken up because
they were able to
score early, but we leaned
on each other and relied
on each other.”
The Trevians talked it
over at the half by themselves
before head coach
Jim Burnside came over
to talk about what happened
and what needed to
be done. This is an experienced
New Trier team
that’s won conference
championships and state
titles, so they know they
can put it together.
Burnside still wants
his team to work out possessing
the ball better and
take advantage of key moments
in the last regular
season game before starting
the campaign for another
state championship.
He knows his team
can flip the switch like it
did against GBN, but he
Glenbrook North’s Katie Benson moves the ball against New Trier on May 8 in Northbrook. Photos by Michal
Dwojak/22nd Century Media
doesn’t always want them
to have to flip it.
“I know it’s there,”
Burnside said. “I don’t
like that and I don’t want
to have to that happen
when we fall behind, but
it’s good to see the grit
when we fall behind out
of there and do what we
need to do.”
GBN wasn’t happy to
just be in the championship
game. The Spartans
have caught a lot of teams
by surprise this season
and have proven why they
can be considered one of
the best in the state, up
there with New Trier.
While the team didn’t
look to just participate in
the championship game,
they knew playing New
Trier would be a good
measuring stick as to
where they are this season.
“We definitely learned
a lot,” Nekritz said. “We
Alyssa Nekritz (left) battles for the ball with a New Trier player.
learned how to play better
in the air. We learned
that we can play in games
like this. We haven’t been
that good in the past few
years, but now we can
compete against the top
teams in the state.”
And they don’t want to be
called a surprise team either.
“I think we’re a dangerous
team,” Loch said.
“I don’t think we’re an
underdog. I think we can
have that mindset to push
ourselves, but I think we
can compete with anyone
in the state.”

Glenbrook North had
worked all season to
achieve their best, and
that’s what head coach
Justin Cooper got from his
runners at the IHSA Sectional
meet on Thursday,
May 10, in Skokie.
While none of the his
runners qualified for the
state meet, many of the
Spartans finished with
personal bests and he
saw his team get better
as the season went
along.
“Some of our top performances
were our fourby-one
and four-by-two
ran season bests, which
was great,” Cooper said.
“They were in the top six
so they scored points.
“I think we exceeded
our expectations in most
events. I’d say a lot of
girls are [setting personal
records] and peaking at
the right time of the season
is a great thing to see
as a coach and all I can really
ask for.”
A week after winning
seven of 18 events at its
conference meet, Loyola
Academy took first in the
800-meter relay and pole
vault.
The relay team of Jacqueline
Topping, Arianna
Awdisho, Brooke Moran
and Addison Bendery won
the race in 1 minute, 42.93
seconds and Kate Santangelo
won the pole vault by
defeating her competition
by six inches after hitting
the 10-foot, six-inch mark
to help the Ramblers finish
fifth at the meet.
“Sectional champ (Santangelo),
she [set a personal
record], best she’s ever
done,” Simon said. “She
just kept thinking 10-6 in
her head and she thought
she could do it. If you
can do that, you’ll be in
good shape.
The 3,200-meter relay
of Sarah Jay, Louisa Edwards,
Nicole Cleland
and Emily Plodzeen took
third, finishing with a time
of 9:31.75, Bendery second
in the 100-meter dash
in 12.50 and 200-meter
dash (25.69).
Bendery set a personal
record in the long jump
and set the school record
in the 100, beating alum
Debbie Mokeleba’s 12.6.
Glenbrook South finished
two points behind
Loyola thanks to impressive
performances in the
field events. Sophomore
Raelynn Roberson took
first in the long jump with
a jump of 18 feet, eight
inches, while teammates
Taylor Ozimek and Annie
Streb qualified for state in
the high jump.
“Today’s been a pretty
good day,” GBS coach
Anthony Griffin said. “We
qualified our four-by-200
relay team, which was
a goal of ours, Raelynn
Glenbrook North’s Leah Matlin (left) anchoring the Spartans’ 4 X 100 relay team,
flanked by Lake Forest’s Kamila Obrzut at the IHSA Sectional on Thursday, May 10, in
Skokie. Gary Larsen/22nd Century Media
Roberson did a great job
for us. Emily Noone four
years in a run qualifying
on the 800, that’s great.”
Roberson qualified for
her second individual
event after finishing third
in the 100 with a time of
12.6, while Emily Noone
qualified in the 800 after
running 2:17.88.
“All you can do is ask
them to do is their best,”
Griffin said. “Raelynn’s
just a competitor. She
works hard, loves the
sport, has a great support
system. Her competitive
nature is what makes her
so good. she wants to be
the best. You can’t beat
that and she has the mental
toughness to do it as
well.”
For the fourth year in
a row, coach Robert Spagnoli
and his New Trier
Trevians walked out of
the sectional meet with
smiles on their faces after
winning the team title at
the sectional. The Trevians
finished with 100.5
points, outdistancing
Evanston, which finished
with 81. Highland Park
was third with 69 points,
Loyola fifth with 64 and
GBS sixth with 62.
“You’re just so happy
for the kids right now
and heartbroken for the
kids that were so close,”
Spagnoli said. “You see
all the hard work and
the dedication they put
in and it’s paying off
right now.
“To have these kids step
up as a group and do what
they did, you have all the
confidence in the world in
them to qualify and to not
only qualify, but to also
have a big time drop.”
