Wheee! 2018 – Lakeside’s International Children’s Theatre and Dance Festival
Nottingham Lakeside Arts’
international festival of theatre
and dance for children is one of
the highlights of Nottingham’s
cultural scene. Taking place each
year during summer half term,
the week-long festival takes place
across many of Lakeside’s spaces
– from the theatre to Highfields
Park – with much of the festival
being free to low cost.
This year’s festival runs from
Monday 28 May – Sunday 3
June, 12noon-5pm. Open for
the duration will be what many
consider to be the Wheee! highlight. Year on
year Nottingham’s own Architects of Air have
brought their spectacular Luminarium to Wheee!
– with many thousands of families enjoying these
extraordinary structures. Every year sees a new
Luminarium erected in Highfields Park. Each one
an intriguing shape, with interiors that are brilliantly
iridescent and a maze of dazzling and unexpected
spaces.
In addition to the Luminarium, there’s Where’s
Jamie? an exhibition allowing young minds to
discover the real life locations that became part of
the BBC’s premier football drama – Jamie Johnson;
high quality theatre shows for all the family; and
the ever-popular Free Family Weekend in the park,
which is this year supported by The Woodland
Trust. Events include:
The Princess & The Pea,
Monday 28 & Tuesday 29 May,
11.30am, 1.30pm & 3.30pm
Peg Puppets & Stories
Workshop,
Monday 28 & Tuesday 29 May,
12.30pm & 2.30pm
Is This A Dagger?
Friday 1 June,
11am & 2pm
Stick by me,
Saturday 2 June,
11.30am & 2pm
The Free Family Weekend will see outdoor
theatre and dance shows and a large array of arts
and craft activities for all ages taking place across
east end of Highfields Park – adjacent to Lakeside
Arts. The full programme is yet to be announced
but it will run from 12noon until 5pm on both
days. Turn up en masse, bring a picnic and spend
a day (or the whole weekend) enjoying fabulous
productions, get stuck in with arts and crafts and
learn all about nature – and all
for free! A full programme for
the Wheee! Family Weekend will
be available in April.
