DAVID HACK CLASSIC
A passion for classic cars and photography
will be remembered on Sunday
The David Hack Classic being held on Sunday
is an annual event where warbirds and classic vehicles
gather for a day as a fundraiser for the Leukaemia
Foundation, Blue Care and other charities.
It is organised by the Rotary Club of Toowoomba
North and has run annually since 1999. This
2018 event is its 20th Anniversary.
The mix of aircraft and many different types of
classic and military vehicles makes for a unique
atmosphere for enthusiasts and the public.
There are trophies for 20 categories, entertainment
and food for the whole family.
Who was David Hack?
David Hack, 1970 - 1998, was a young man
with a passion for photography and classic cars.
He was a member of the Toowoomba South
Rotaract club and award winning photographer
and freelance contributor to national magazines.
Diagnosed with non Hodgkin’s lymphoma in
1996, David underwent aggressive cancer treatment
of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a bone
marrow transplant.
During his final weeks, David planned a
big birthday bash for his 28th birthday at the
Toowoomba Aerotec hangar with family and
friends against a backdrop of classic and exotic
cars and historic war planes.
Unfortunately, David passed away two days before
the event.
John Freeman, long serving member of the Rotary
Club of Toowoomba North, felt that the concept
of the day should not be forgotten.
The inaugural David Hack classic meet was
held in 1999. The public choice trophy is presented
each year in David’s memory by his mother,
Anna.
LETTERS
Reflecting on Anzac Day at Acland
I would like to publicly thank
all those who helped at Acland
Anzac Day.
For that moment in time we
are all united as proud Australians
who honour those who
fought for our freedom.
Anzac Day gives us time for
reflection on what and who we
are, each with our own private
thoughts on what it means.
Usually, my thoughts are with
my dad and uncles but this year
because of the stories told by the
school children they receded and
my mum and grandparents came
to the fore.
Both sets of grandparents had
all their sons overseas during
WWII. I was able to reflect on
DAM LEVELS
50.3%
what they might have thought
and how they coped. I guess my
Mum wondered if she would
ever get to marry her sweetheart.
As I stood in the park at
Acland I remembered my dear
friend Chaseley who was forced
to be the pay clerk when her
brothers went to war.
It was not the job she planned
for herself.
She would come on the train
to Acland with bags of cash to
pay the underground miners.
In this material world where
we worry about budgets and
money, she was told by her father
to hand over the cash if she
was held up.
War makes one realise what is
important. Each year I have had
a magic moment.
I remember the one year when
the school children talked about
butterflies in the war when in
flew masses of butterflies that
danced around the children and
the crowd.
This year for me it was the
special visitor who watched the
service and the people from the
tree top.
The koala was an added bonus
for many people.
Great to see you all, the regulars
and the new visitors and I
look forward to seeing you again
in 2019.
Same time same place. Lest
We Forget, - Merilyn Plant.
Passenger rail to Brisbane no longer just a pipe dream
Fast passenger rail between
Toowoomba and Brisbane has been a
dream of many for a long time.
But the Federal Budget last week
might have kick-started it into reality.
Mayor Paul Antonio said hidden in
the small print of the Budget papers
was an allocation of $15 million for a
business case for the rail project.
Passenger rail to Brisbane it seems
had been listed as a project for 2041.
But the possibility of South East
Queensland hosting the Olympic
Games in 2032 might have prompted
an earlier start.
Cr Antonio, pictured, said the
announcement was a breath of fresh
air because such an infrastructure
project would be amazing.
“Toowoomba was a wonderful place
and to be able to travel to Brisbane in
45 minutes could encourage people to
live here.”
Cr Antonio said he would be
lobbying for a bigger tunnel through
the Toowoomba Range for the inland
rail project so it could accommodate
two freight lines for the Inland Rail
plus another line for fast passenger
trains to Brisbane. The 6km tunnel
is planned from Gowrie Junction
to north of Withcott and will have a
low gradient suitable for fast modern
trains.
The Mayor also noted the
Federal Government will relocate
the Department of Infrastructure,
Regional Development and Cities
Inland Rail Unit from Canberra to
Federal Govt investing in regional Australia
This Budget continues a commitment to build
a strong regional Australia with extensions to
community grants programs to invest directly
in economic and social infrastructure which
creates jobs and builds stronger regional
communities.
Following the success of the first round
of the Building Better Regions Fund, which
is delivering more than 250 projects across
regional Australia and creating about 26,000
jobs, a further $200 million has been allocated
to deliver a third round of the program.
Local knowledge is critical to successful
community projects which is why the Stronger
Communities Programme will be extended for
a fourth round through a commitment of an
additional $22.5 million.
This program provides grants of between
$2,500 and $20,000 to community organisations
and Local Governments for capital projects,
such as aged care facilities and community
halls.
Tree clearing
I have a question for our
council in regard to the new land
clearing law passed in State Parliament
on Thursday.
Does that law only apply to
farmers who produce our food
and not to developers who produce
housing estates which help
to increase the polution?
I am asking this due to an article
in the Herald earlier this year
regarding the development and
road widening proposed for Reis
Road at Highfields which will
destroy a large number of trees
and remove the habitat of the native
animals that live there.
If this development is allowed
to go ahead, it makes a
total mockery of the reasons the
State Government used for the
land clearing laws they passed. -
Clive Bentley, Highfields.
The commitment to practical and common
sense decentralisation initiatives will continue
to boost economic growth and provide
more opportunities for secure, high-paying
jobs outside the traditional public-service
strongholds of Canberra, Melbourne and
Sydney.
Regional Australia has already directly
benefited from this agenda with the successful
relocation of the Australian Pesticides and
Veterinary Medicines Authority to Armidale
in New South Wales and Rural Industries
Research and Development Corporation
(now Agrifutures) to Wagga Wagga in New
South Wales, and with the announcement the
Regional Investment Corporation will be based
in Orange, New South Wales.
To build on this success, jobs from six
Government entities will be relocated,
including positions from the following:
•The Office of the Registrar of Indigenous
Corporations moving from Canberra to Darwin;
STATE OF ORIGIN
•Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet
Indigenous Affairs Group Regional Network
moving from Melbourne to Shepparton
in Victoria and from the Sydney CBD to
Parramatta in the city’s west;
•The Unique Student Identifier Registrar
moving from Canberra to Adelaide;
•The Office of the National Rural Health
Commissioner to be established in Adelaide;
•Department of Infrastructure, Regional
Development and Cities Indian Ocean
Territories from Canberra to Perth; and
•Department of Infrastructure, Regional
Development and Cities Inland Rail Unit from
Canberra to Toowoomba in Queensland, Dubbo
in New South Wales and Wodonga in Victoria.
The Government’s commitment to a
decentralisation agenda is unwavering. In
addition to the above, further significant
announcements in relation to decentralisation
will be made over the coming months.
Toowoomba, Dubbo and Wodonga.
The Australian Rail Track
Corporation (ARTC) which is
building the Inland Rail already has
an office in Toowoomba.
Cr Antonio said he was hoping the
Budget also allocated funding for
projects such as the reconstruction of
two creek crossings in Toowoomba,
one on James Street where people
died during the 2011 flood, and also
for a better road to Highfields.
For more than eight years Kim and Shelley Waters, pictured,
have continued the tradition of baking fresh hand made pies at their
Toowoomba store.
J.Jaks Family Pies opened its doors in 2010 on the corner of
Hume and Perth Streets after spending several years renovating the
former convenience store.
Owner Kim Waters said when he moved to Toowoomba 15 years
ago, opening another pie shop was always on the agenda.
“Our passion and the reason we wanted to get back into making
pies is because baking fresh food has almost become a lost craft in
today’s mass-produced world, we want to help keep the tradition
alive,” he said.
“We owned a pie shop is Bundaberg for quite a while before we
moved to Toowoomba so we already knew what we were doing
which helped a lot.”
J.Jaks Pies also specialises in slices and cakes, including traditional
apple turnovers and lamingtons for those with a sweet tooth.
For opening hours visit their Facebook page.
Rotary Bowelscan program
Each year from May 1 until June 28 the Rotary Club of Toowoomba
North distributes hundreds of Bowelscan kits across Toowoomba,
Highfields, Kingsthorpe, Oakey, Pittsworth and Millmerran in
their annual Bowelscan program.
The Bowelscan kits can be bought at local pharmacies for $15
which includes the test kit and pathology. This is a great deal and
everyone over 40 should buy a kit. Bowel cancer is 90 per cent curable
if detected early.
Rotary Club of Toowoomba North distribute the Bowelscan kits
as a community service only and the only gain for Rotary is knowing
how many lives this program saves each year. Each year the 400
kits sold in this region alone discovers 100 or so possible positive
results for bowel cancer. It has even saved the life of one of their
own members.
If your pharmacy is not participating in the program, contact
Toowoomba North President, Robyn Jeffery 0414 965 870 to find
out where you can buy a kit or ask your Pharmacy to contact them
and take on some kits to sell.
You’re never too young to be tested and it could save your life
Impressive show history
Toowoomba Region Councillor Geoff McDonald said the history of
the Crows Nest Show should be taught in schools.
Cr McDonald, opening the 115th Crows Nest Show on Saturday, said
he was impressed with the involvement of many people who contributed
to the running of the show, including the volunteers without whom the
show would not function. He praised show society patron Merv McLean
who has been involved with the show for 80 years.
Cr McDonald was so impressed with a history of the Crows Nest
Show, outlined by president May Gossow, that he thought local history
should be taught in schools.
Mrs Gossow talked about the development of the show from 1901 and
the four or five locations on which the show was held.
She said she was the first woman to be president of the show society
after 20 men held the office. • Full show coverage next ssue.
Nexus recently advertised the
need for motorists to merge at
the merge point and not early
when forming one lane at their
roadworks.
In some instances when motorists
are not choosing to merge
early other motorists have been
blocking the open lane so vehicles
are unable to merge later
and are forced to merge early.
As Nexus states, this creates
more traffic problems.
Highfields Police have received
a number of previous
complaints about this and as
such will be actively enforcing
these merges.
If you are blocking other motorists
from driving down the
empty lane to the merge point
you are committing the traffic offence
of “Unreasonably obstruct
path of another driver.” This infringement
attracts a $126 penalty
and no loss of points.
Regional gallery brings story time alive in art
Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery and First 5 Forever
have joined forces to offer the Toowoomba Region an
educational program that incorporates stories, songs,
rhymes and art for children in their developing years.
The Activating Art program is a story time with themes
and learning experiences based on current exhibitions on
display at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery.
Environment and Community portfolio leader Cr
Joe Ramia said the program has a strong focus on early
childhood education and supporting the needs of children
in their first five years.
“The activities are presented in a nurturing yet fun
environment and incorporate stories, songs and art
that encourage play-based learning as well as skill
development, Cr Ramia said.
“This program is where a picture really does become a
thousand words!
“Each session is unique and is prepared by a joint team
from the Gallery and First 5 Forever.
“Guardians are encouraged to return to the Gallery in
their own time and revisit the exhibition and resource
materials with their child,” Cr Ramia said.
10 - HIGH COUNTRY HERALD - MAY 15, 2018
TRC_SEC_0518_4x180_HCH
Art works record development
in the region
Artist Bill Morton with Toowoomba art teacher Sheri Gillmeister and
her four daughters, Kirra, Siara, Mia, and Bella (front).
An exhibition of art works
that detail construction
of the Toowoomba
second range crossing,
and the Grand Central Shopping
Centre, has been described as
extraordinary and simply stunning.
Cr Geoff McDonald, speaking
at the opening of Mr Morton’s
exhibition “Toowoomba, Today,
Tomorrow, Time of Transition”
said that in 50 to 100 years, people
would reflect on the images as a
genuine record.
Cr McDonald said the paintings
and drawings were like a time
capsule. They were extra special
and immortalised this period of
development in Toowoomba.
He said Mr Morton had not
yet painted the development
of the Wellcamp Airport of the
construction of the Toowoomba
Library.
Cr McDonald said Toowoomba
had not finished its development,
and pointed to big projects being
planned, including the inland rail
and the construction of a new
hospital on the Baillie Henderson
site. He said the cutting of the
tunnel through the Toowoomba
Range for the inland rail would
provide Mr Morton with many
more days of sketching and
painting.
Mr Morton has already spent 18
months on the paintings for this
first exhibition, about 24 paintings
and what he calls “quickies” which
are smaller sketches, some of
which became larger paintings.
Mr Morton said this was not the
last of his work, and was hoping
to keep painting this series as long
as Nexus Infrastructure worked on
the new range crossing.
The exhibition, at the
Toowoomba Art Society in Godsall
Street, continues until May 27.
• Square-leaved broom
(Spartothamnella juncea)
Mostly leafless, slender shrub to
1.5m, usually found in drier rainforests,
it has small five-petalled
white flowers throughout
the year.
The fruits are orange to red
which makes this plant rather
special.
A hardy garden plant requiring
very little attention once
established, this is a worthwhile
inclusion in any garden.
• Velvet Leaf (Callicarpa pedunculata)
Another garden gem
this scrub will grow up to 2m but
it rarely does, the reason being is
responds well to pruning.
It has lovely velvety leaves
which are inviting to touch.
The tiny pink flowers are not
showy but wait, the clusters of
purple-pink are a special feature.
Another hardy or drought resistant
plant but it does like regular
watering for good growth.
It is frost tender however,
but will grow well with
cover from other plants.
• Climbing Saltbush (Rhagodia
parabolica) Contrary to the
description given in some plant
books, this plant in my garden is
a bushy lovely green plant that
has spread and is now one metre
tall.
More than 50 people attended
the opening last Saturday including
a number from Artists of Crows
Nest, of which Bill Morton is
president.
Mr Morton urged people to
support their local artists within
their community.
He said that in an era of
technology, artists tended to be
pushed to the side, even though
artists had the ability to show the
community many things, including
the environment and the human
condition. - Miles Noller.
COMMENT: The Bill Morton
collection of paintings and sketches
of construction of big projects
are said to have immortalised
Toowoomba’s current development
era
Ṫhey form a time capsule which
will become a record for the city.
Those who attended the opening
of the Bill Morton exhibition saw
not only the artistic merit in the
works, but also in the historic
record they created.
So how will the residents of
Toowoomba view this record in 50
or 100 years?
A number of people believe they
should be acquired by Toowoomba
Regional Council and kept together
for the future.
Maybe Nexus Infrastructure
and QIC’s Grand Central could
contribute to the acquisition of the
work, and should Mr Morton paint
a record of construction of new
projects, the relevant developers
might also contribute to such an
artistic record.
Mr Morton’s paintings are
works of art. But they also exhibit
great technique and detail which
captures machines and construction
in a way rarely seen.
Native plants available
at Crows Nest nursery
Tip pruning may have resulted
in a rather stronger specimen
than one described as being
weak-stemmed and climbing.
The leaves are alternate and
greyish green.
White flowers come on panicles
in the spring and summer.
Fruits are red.
Definitely worth a place in a
garden especially as it doesn’t
requiring a lot of attention.
• Native Thistle (Stemmacantha
australis) Erect thistle-like
herb reaching 1m, it has
no prickles.
Basal leaves are serrated, paler
below, sometimes lobed.
Typical thistle flower heads
appear in spring and summer.
This plant is listed as vulnerable
but judging by how well
it propagates, it may be on the
come-back.
Once established and left to
seed it comes up without much
attention.
Water or rain helps it to become
a permanent fixture.
Left to seed you will be rewarded
with many plants.
Most of these plants are
available from the Crows Nest
Community Nursery open on a
Thursday morning. - Contributed.
HAMPTON FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND
Master classes, live entertainment
and cooking demonstrations
Organisers of this
weekend’s Hampton
Festival are
expecting strong
crowds, thanks to an expanded
Festival program
and the ability to pre-order
tickets on line.
Held in Chapman Park,
32km north of Toowoomba,
the festival is known for its
celebration of fresh regional
produce and diverse creative
culture.
This year’s event will feature
a three-day program
of food and art workshops,
masterclasses, live entertainment
and cooking demonstrations
with renowned
chef Ash Martin of Homage
Restaurant.
Event organiser Wendy
Allen said, “We are so looking
forward to this year’s
event. Our introduction of
workshops and masterclasses
for two days before the
Hampton Festival was a big
success last year.
“This year’s classes include
fermenting, beer and
cheese matching, floral art
masterclasses to name a few
and we are also very excited
to have Ash Martin involved
in the program this year.
Ash’s paddock to plate
philosophy and passion for
Bathurst Holden replicas at last year’s Oakey Sprints.
The New Hope Oakey Sprints this weekend
will be the 10th annual event for cars to race
around the industrial estate.
More than 100 competitors from throughout
Australia plan to be there and it seems that each
year the organisers tweak the track a bit.
This weekend there will be adjustments to the
chicanes on the back straight to make the track
more challenging.
The circuit, near the grain silos on Oakey’s
northside, uses Gayle, Ross, Katrina and
Fitzpatrick Streets.
The event consists of multiple timed runs.
Each run is the total time taken to complete
two laps of the circuit with the total distance of
the two laps being 2.5km.
Thanks to Rob Bellinger from Bellinger
Interior Linings, the street car challenge is
back again with Paul Buccini attempting a third
consecutive win in his turbo charged BMWi30.
The Oakey Motor Sport Club, organisers of the
event, has its biggest field of juniors by far with
nine entering in two classes and a ladies class is
being introduced.
In addition to the street cars, there are classes
for modifieds, open wheelers and vehicles not
registered for the street.
The ever popular top 10 shoot-out is
back, thanks to Southern Cross Sheds, and a
NASCAR truck will be doing laps at lunch time
on Saturday.
A DJ will be playing on Saturday afternoon
and evening.
Also on Saturday night there will be a return
of a Go To Whoa competition, but it will much
bigger than previously and the way it will be run
is exclusive to Oakey.
Organising spokesman Ben Willson said
competitors would have a standing start, speed
up over a short straight run, do a U-turn around a
tyre bundle, then head down the straight coming
The Go To Whoa will be part of the Saturday
night entertainment.
FARMING
The perfect steak is the key to cattle production
The judge of the prime cattle section
at the Goombungee Haden Show has
highlighted the importance of the eating
quality of beef to the cattle industry.
Pat McMahon from McMahon
Brothers Quality Meats business in
Killarney, said that in judging beef
cattle, there were a number of factors
which were important.
These included conformation of the
animal and evenness of fat cover, and
there were others such as yield.
But Mr McMahon said the number
one factor was eating quality, producing
the perfect steak.
He said most people enjoy a steak
but it was important that people enjoy
it so much that they keep coming back
for more.
He selected a Santa steer from
Noel and Graeme Timm, Kilburnie,
as the champion steer/heifer of the
competition.
It was from the heavyweight (480kg
and over) class.
Mr McMahon said it would have a
high recovery of the most expensive
cuts, it had strength in its top line and
good eye muscle area.
In the lighter weight class (320kg to
420kg), the first two places were won
by heifers entered by Trevor and Elaine
Nielsen of Cutella.
Each was from a Hereford/Santa cow
and a Limousin bull. The one placed
first could yield perfect steaks, and had
good conformation and fat coverage, Mr
McMahon said.
GOOMBUNGEE HADEN SHOW
Top pigs at a rare show
Pork producers continue their support for the
Goombungee Haden Show which has a section for
commercial pigs, followed by a sale.
It’s believed Goombungee is the only show in
Australia to have such an event, although stud pigs
are shown at Toowoomba and a handful of other
places. Judge Pat McMahon had 19 porkers and eight
weaners to select from, and chose a Large White gilt
as champion pig of the show.
It was exhibited by Kilburnie (near Haden)
producers Graeme and Noel Timm, and was from the
champion pen. The champion sold for $395 to Pioneer
Arms Hotel in Goombungee.
The 19 porkers sold for an average of $260 and the
eight stores/weaners averaged $125.
The Timm brothers are regular winners in the
competition selecting show pigs from their 80 sow
breeding enterprise.
However, cattle account for half of their business,
and they showed their expertise with cattle by having
the champion prime steer of the show.
Scott and Mary Mengel with prime sheep judge
Pat McMahon. The Mengels, from Rhyre, Oakey,
exhibited the champion pen of three lambs at the
Goombungee Haden Show. It was the second
consecutive year that Scott and Mary have won
the championship at Goombungee. This year the
champions were also White Dorpers. They were
five and a half months old and were expected to
produce 23kg carcases. They sold at the show
auction for $160 a head.
Cait Jenyns of Lazy Acres Boer Goat Stud,
Pittsworth, with the supreme champion at
Goombungee Show. Lazy Acres Nitro, eight
months, was also champion buck. Cait and
David Jenyns also exhibited the champion doe,
and were placed first in the sires progeny class. It
was the biggest goat show at Goombungee that
most can remember with more exhibitors and
more entries than previously.
The Darling Downs branch
of Heritage Roses in Australia
showed off their beautiful
collection of roses at Harris
House, Toowoomba, on Saturday,
May 5.
Harris House, bought by
the National Trust last year, is
currently in the early stages
of a planned 10-year restoration.
It was estimated that
around 500 people toured the
historic home on the weekend
and caught a glimpse of
what life was like when it was
built in 1911.
Twelve dozen scones were
also sold in the first two and a
half hours.
The roses will be an integral
part of the garden when
the home is fully restored. -
Rosemary for remembrance
at Maclagan Kindergarten
Windermere Kindergarten at Maclagan has
been growing rosemary for three years in the
children’s garden.
This year for the first time, kindergarten
president Susie Ballard was able to harvest
enough rosemary foliage, to create the wreath
which was laid by the children at the Anzac
Day service in Maclagan.
Growing rosemary in the children’s
garden became a tradition from 2015 when
the kindergarten was visited by Mr Russell
Duggan, FLT LT with AAFC at the Oakey
Army Aviation Centre.
His visit was to mark the centenary of
the landing at Gallipoli, and he planted a
rosemary shrub.
The significance of rosemary to Anzac
day is that it is similar to the flora found
growing wild on the Gallipoli peninsula and
symbolises remembrance.
Each year since, Mr Duggan has returned
to the kindergarten to assist the children
establish a new rosemary plant.
This year President Susie Ballard was able
to harvest enough rosemary foliage from the
kindy’s garden to create the wreath which was
laid by the children at this year’s Anzac Day
service.
Mr Duggan’s affiliation with the children of
Maclagan is highly valued and respected.
Through his visits, the capacity for three,
four and five-year-olds to learn about the
foundational values of Anzac Day is elevated
and brought to life.
The rosemary plants in the playground act
as a living monument to our servicemen and
women and stimulate rich conversations and
learning opportunities about our Anzacs not
just on April 25, but all year round.
The children look forward to Mr Duggan’s
return to transplant the fourth edition of
rosemary into their outdoor play space to
commemorate Anzac Day.
Sadie Ballard and Charlotte Utz from Maclagan
Windemere Kindergarten at the Maclagan Anzac Day
commemoration with Mr Russell Duggan from the Oakey
