The nonprofit, started in October of 2017 by founder and Executive Director Gina Smith, recently held a Spring Market Fair May 11-12 to raise funds and help spread the word about Renewal. Several local vendors participated in the fair by donating items such as clothes, home goods and baked goods. All the proceeds went directly toward the programs Renewal currently offers and to programs it plans to offer in the summer. “The services that we offer individual and group therapy, support groups, mentorships, and we just started doing different types of workshops, like art therapy, for example. We’re going to have a caregiver workshop this summer,” Smith said. Smith said that Renewal currently services about 30 people, but hopes to grow that number through the workshops and through networking with other social service providers in the area. Smith, who has a master’s degree in social work from University of St. Francis and is originally from Tinley Park, decided to get into social work because she is also disabled — she’s legally blind — and wanted to give back to help others with disabilities. “I think that Renewal is awesome, selfishly, because it’s also helping me in a way. It’s helping others, but it’s also helping me. I’m learning,” Smith said. “I think the No. 1 thing that people with any kind of disability needs to make sure they’re advocating for themselves, and that’s hard to do because when people hear the word, ‘disability,’ and sometimes they think it’s a negative thing. Well, it just means that you have to do things differently; you’re differently abled. “And I feel like if you have that kind of approach and know where caregiver and family support For more info… Phone: (708) 705- 3522 Email: renewal. disability@gmail. com to turn to get help, whether it’s for school, finding their disability center, whatever the case may be, advocating for yourself, being up front with people… I think that will lead to success in any kind of area: work, school, just life in general.” Smith said she had the, “Ah ha!” Plenty of home goods, garden supplies and other wares, such as this chair converted into a small garden, were on display at Renewal’s Spring Market Fair May 11-12. Photos submitted moment on Christmas Day 2013. She was stuck at home, alone, because she had lost her driver’s license due to her vision and could not go out to meet up with friends. After spending some time feeling down and sorry for herself, Smith decided that she would dedicate herself to helping others and, in turn, she’d be doing something good for herself, too. “I can’t explain it. It just hit me like a ton of bricks, where I thought, ‘Wait. Why don’t I do something where it offers support, and then in turn it will help me, as well?’ When you find like-minded people, or people who are similar to you in some way, it’s a comfort.” So much of a comfort, in fact, that Smith even incorporated the idea into Renewal’s slogan: “Belonging & Renewed Hope.” Part of the trick for any social service agency to survive in today’s climate is the ability to network and form partnerships with other service providers in the area, something Smith has already begun to do when Renewal and Lincolnway Special Recreation Association teamed up May 5 to bring multiple disability service providers under the same roof at the same time to inform the public of their services and to network with each other to find how they can best compliment each others services. “If you’re in that world, if you’re in that social service world, then you have to know that’s what it’s all about is networking, because we can’t do everything ourselves. There’s just no way.”
