game and win a regional
championship against a good
Lincoln-Way Central team,”
East coach Mike Murphy
said. “Especially with the
inexperience we had early.
The team worked hard and it
paid off.”
Especially for Johnston,
who was relegated to filming
duties for the Griffins since
she was hit in the head twice
and suffered a concussion on
March 22 in a game against
Providence. She returned
May 8 in the final regular
season game at Bradley-
Bourbonnais.
In the regular season meeting
between the two teams,
Kayleigh Hanlon scored
the only goal for the Griffins.
The junior midfielder
started the only scoring play
last week, too. She passed to
junior forward Haley Moustis,
who got off a shot from
the left side. Knight junior
goalkeeper Peyton Vecchiet
knocked the ball out, but
couldn’t secure it.
Johnston was there to hit
a rebound attempt. That too
was tipped out, but not secured
and went right back
to Johnston, who knocked
her second rebound attempt
inside the right post for the
games only goal just 3:03
into the contest.
“I hit if off the keeper
once, it came back to me,
and I hit it again,” Johnston
said. “Haley put a good shot
off the goalie, and I just followed
up on it.
“It feels really good to be
back. I’m just really happy
to be back and be able to
help the team.”
“She made a good save
when they scored the goal,”
Central coach Dan Radz said
of Vecchiet. “We just didn’t
clean it up.
“We’re snakebit. We lost
to Lincoln-Way West 1-0 in
the regional title game last
year and now 1-0 to East
this year. I was hoping the
seeds would work out where
we didn’t have to play another
Lincoln-Way in this
game, but they didn’t. We’d
been on the down-slide, we
couldn’t score.”
The Knights had their
chances. Senior forward
Maddie Melde had a couple
of good strikes in the first
half. But Fields, a senior,
made nice saves on both. Senior
defender Leah Willner
tried to get things going with
a corner kick and a crossing
shot, but those didn’t find
their mark.
Central’s best opportunities
came on a series of
second half free kicks on restarts
near the top of the box.
Junior forward Nicolette
Gossage took the first three
in the first 10 minutes of the
Tony Mavrogiannis - soccer
at Benedictine University;
Jared Mutter - baseball at Illinois
Wesleyan University;
Cristian Nolasco - cross
country and track and field
Hailey O’Malley - cross
country and track and field
Zavala - volleyball at Augustana
College.
second half. All of her kicks
sailed high.
“The first part of the season,
Nicolette was solid in
the upper window [on free
kicks],” Radz said. “We had
opportunities, but we just
couldn’t score.”
Central had one last free
kick opportunity, this one by
junior defender Megan Andjelic
with 8:19 to play. But
it too sailed just too high.
That was the last opportunity
for the Knights as East’s defense
— led by junior Amber
Brooks, freshman Bianca
Cahue, junior Ashley Kuzlik
and freshman Lauren Sandburg
— buckled down for
the final eight minutes
“Our defense was really
impressive, especially the
last 15 to 20 minutes. We
gave up some free kicks and
we can’t foul there. But most
of the fouls happened because
the defense was playing
hard.”
