Third Sunday of End Time
Saints Triumphant
November 14 & 15, 2010
Today’s Focus: A Preview of Paradise Saints Triumphant is an occasion for us to really think about what heaven will
be like. All God’s “saints” (believers in Jesus) look forward with eager anticipation to that day when God will welcome
us into our eternal home. Listen carefully to today’s Scripture lessons and think about the words of the hymns, because
today God describes the beauty of heaven and shares with us a preview of Paradise.
CONFESSION OF SINS
M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge
our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts,
words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment
both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray:
Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of
the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is your name in all the earth. Almighty God, merciful Father,
you crown our life with your love. You take away our sin; you comfort our spirit;
you make us pure and holy in your sight. You did not spare your only Son, but gave him up for us all.
O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is your name in all the earth.
O Son of God, eternal Word of the Father, you came to live with us; you made your Father known;
ANTHEM (10:30) “There Is a Higher Throne” Youth Choir
There is a higher throne than all this world has known, Where faithful ones from ev’ry tongue will one day come.
Before the Son we’ll stand, made faultless through the Lamb; Believing hearts find promised grace; salvation comes.
Refrain: Hear heaven’s voices sing; their thund’rous anthem rings,
Through em’rald courts and sapphire skies their praises rise.
All glory, wisdom, pow’r, strength, thanks, and honor are to
God our King who reigns on high forevermore.
And there we’ll find our home, our life before the throne. We’ll honor him in perfect song where we belong.
He’ll wipe each tear-stained eye as thirst and hunger die. The Lamb becomes our Shepherd-King; we’ll reign with him.
FIRST LESSON Isaiah 65:17-25 (pg. 1164)
17
“Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come
to mind.
18
But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy.
19
I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no
more.
3
20
“Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years;
he who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere youth; he who fails to reach a hundred will be considered accursed.
21
They will build houses and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22
No longer will they build houses and others live in them, or plant and others eat. For as the days of a tree, so will be
the days of my people; my chosen ones will long enjoy the works of their hands.
23
They will not toil in vain or bear children doomed to misfortune; for they will be a people blessed by the LORD, they
and their descendants with them.
24
Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.
25
The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but dust will be the serpent’s food.
They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the LORD.
SECOND LESSON Revelation 21:1-6 (pg. 1937)
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was
no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride
beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is
with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of
things has passed away.”
5
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these
words are trustworthy and true.”
6
He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will
give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.”
VERSE OF THE DAY (8:00 & Monday)
 Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
ANTHEM (10:30) “Built on the Rock” Senior & Youth Choirs with congregation
4
Choirs: Built on the Rock the Church shall stand Even when steeples are falling. Jubilate Deo!*
Crumbled have spires in every land; Bells still are chiming and calling. Jubilate Deo!
Calling the young and old to rest, But above all the souls distressed,
Longing for rest everlasting. Jubilate Deo!
Surely in temples made with hands, God, the Most High, is not dwelling;
High above earth His temple stands, All earthly temples excelling.
Yet He who dwells in heav’n above Chooses to live with us in love, making our bodies His temple.
Congregation: We are God’s house of living stones, Built for His own habitation.
He through baptismal grace us owns Heirs of His wondrous salvation.
Were we but two His name to tell, Yet He would deign with us to dwell With all His grace and His favor.
*Jubilate Deo—”Shout with joy to God”
GOSPEL LESSON John 14:1-6 (pg. 1675)
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it
were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for
you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place
where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
OUR COMMUNION PRACTICE
The Bible tells us that the Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion) is one of the greatest blessings the Risen
Christ has given to his Church. It is his very body and blood, given to assure an individual that his sacrifice
on the cross really counts for me. But what is a tremendous spiritual blessing for one who knows and believes
Jesus’ teaching can also be a spiritual detriment for a person who hasn’t learned or doesn’t believe Jesus’
teaching on the Supper. “Anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and
drinks judgment on himself.” I Corinthians 11:29.
The Bible also tells us that Holy Communion is an expression of oneness in faith and teaching among
those who participate in it. “Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of
the one loaf.” I Corinthians 10:17. For these reasons we at St. John’s follow the ancient Christian practice of
“Close Communion,” (as in “close friends”), admitting to our communion table members of our congregation
and members of other WELS or ELS congregations in doctrinal fellowship with our congregation.
We invite you to study the basic teachings of our faith with us in our New Life in Christ Bible information
class. If, at the end of that course, you agree with our understanding of the Bible’s teachings,
we will be happy to recognize your oneness in faith with us through church membership and participation
in Holy Communion here at St. John’s. Thank you for understanding our close communion
practice. Please let us know if you are interested in further study in the New Life in Christ
Bible information classes.
BIBLE STUDIES AT ST. JOHN’S
“Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18)
Sundays
Sunday School (Preschool - 6th grade) — 9:15 AM School Classrooms
Dedicated teachers will use sound, Lutheran teaching materials and age-appropriate activities to engage children in
Spirit-blessed interaction with God’s Word. Every lesson, every week, offers the clear message of forgiveness, life,
and salvation that comes only through Jesus.
Teen Bible Class (grades 7 - 12) — 9:15 AM School Resource Room
Delving into the doctrines of Scripture will be the focus of this exciting topical study of the Bible. Teens can expect
to take their elementary knowledge God’s Word to a new level while growing in faith at the same time. Pastor Paul
Prange and Julie Speidel will lead the Teen Bible Class.
Adult Bible Class — 9:15 AM — New Life in Christ School Workroom
This basic Christian doctrine and discipleship course provides new members the opportunity to explore the
Bible’s basic teachings and to learn what membership at St. John’s is all about! Current members are also welcome
to attend this class as a review.
Adult Bible Class — 9:15 AM — Catholicism Today—No Class on 11/14 Meeting Room
The Burlington area is very Roman Catholic. Some of us have Catholic neighbors; some have Catholic friends;
some even come from a Catholic background. It’s difficult to fully understand Lutheranism and the truths of
Scripture without understanding the principles of Catholicism. This class will take an in-depth look at the official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, offer a scriptural appraisal, and confirm God’s truth in our hearts.
The better we understand Catholicism, the more we will appreciate Lutheranism.
Nursery care will be provided on Sunday mornings in the classroom located behind the stage in the gym.
Tuesdays
Breakfast Bible Study — 6:00 AM — Revelation Lucky Star Restaurant, Burlington
Of all the books in the New Testament the Book of Revelation is the one that puzzles most readers today. The mysterious
figures and cryptic symbols are far removed from the experience of most readers today. But the basic message
of Revelation is still relevant today: no power on earth can ever threaten the rule of God and his Messiah.
God’s lordship over the world is secure, and he reigns now and forever. Come explore this fascinating book with
us. Led by Pastor Laabs
Wednesdays
Morning Bible Study — 8:45 AM — 1 Samuel Meeting Room or School Workroom
God called Samuel, even as a child, to be a prophet and judge for the Israelites, who wanted a king. The books of
Samuel outline the history of Israel’s first kings, Saul and David. Through many acts of deliverance and forgiveness,
God kept safe the line of the King of kings, our Savior Jesus Christ. Led by Pastor Lahmann
