I. (8:30-8:35) Introduce the topic—you want others to underst<strong>and</strong> the<br />

sequence <strong>of</strong> events you have written, so keep your tenses consistent.

Examples will be shown for each situation discussed below.<br />

(8:35-8:40) When discussing works <strong>of</strong> fiction or someone else’s<br />

story, use present tense.<br />

(8:40-8:50) When discussing true past events, use past tense.<br />

(Although that is different when speaking, past tense is expected<br />

when writing.)<br />

(8:50-8:55) Be especially careful to keep your tenses consistent<br />

within a sentence.<br />
