MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
FIRM LAEMPE & MÖSSNER IS AT
HOME ALL OVER THE WORLD
With its Regional Innovation Strategy
2014 – 2020 (RIS), Saxony-Anhalt is
setting its future path and establishing
itself as an innovative location
for research, development and business in Europe.
One of its key components is the leading market
of energy, mechanical and plant engineering, and
resource efficiency.
According to the RIS, intelligent, integrated and
sustainable economic regions should develop in
Europe. What is the goal of the RIS in Saxony-
Anhalt?
DORRIT KOEBCKE-FRIEDRICH: The economy is set
to change even more rapidly in the future. We need
to support our businesses by placing an ever greater
focus on innovation and sustainability. In this
respect, Saxony-Anhalt has defined five markets of
the future which arise from our economic structure.
One is the market of energy, mechanical and
plant engineering, and resource efficiency.
Why do energy efficiency and mechanical and
plant engineering go together?
ANDREA VOSS: On the one hand, mechanical and
plant engineering firms such as Enercon are providing
energy production technology. On the other hand,
the customers of the mechanical engineering firms
are also demanding energy efficient products. Also,
the actual energy consumption of the manufacturing
businesses themselves is naturally of considerable
importance. Therefore, it makes sense to bring
these areas of expertise together. They are further
supple mented by the loop economy and resource
efficiency.
DORRIT KOEBCKE-FRIEDRICH
Senior Manager, Investment
and Marketing Corpo ration
Saxony-Anhalt (IMG)
Where do the strengths of Saxony-Anhalt lie?
DORRIT KOEBCKE-FRIEDRICH: Here in Saxony-
Anhalt, we produce more energy than we use. Our
local businesses sell excellent products that they
make with the use of innovative technology. Research
institutes in the areas of energy, automation, material
economics and the loop economy provide the
possibility of entrepreneurial innovations.
What role does IMG play in the implementation of
the regional innovation strategy?
ANDREA VOSS: The Investment and Marketing
Corporation Saxony-Anhalt (IMG) is the pilot, as it
were, which guides the businesses that come to
Saxony-Anhalt. We provide advice on site selection
and the networking between the partners.
partners. Our service relates to the creation of jobs
and the settlement of industrial companies, which
strengthen the value added chain in the federal
state. IMG helps to forge networks between the
businesses and the research institute in the federal
state, for example.
DORRIT KOEBCKE-FRIEDRICH: New ideas from the
areas of research and development in the federal
state also support the approach of attracting
global companies to Saxony Anhalt, such as US
Engineering AG of Switzerland. And we are also
supporting com panies from Saxony-Anhalt, such
as AV-TEST and Gollmann Kommissioniersysteme
(order picking sys tems), with their plans for growth
and internationalisation.
Networking and intelligent management
stands for complete solutions – from the
installation to the spare part.

demand all over the world.

PROFESSION : MARKET OF THE FUTURE ENERGY, ENGINEERING & PLANT CONSTRUCTION, RESSOURCE EFFICIENCY 6 7 PROFESSION
Precision systems:
the LFB series automatic
core shooting machines
Laempe & Mössner are world market leaders in the
production of core shop technologies. The focus
lies also on the networking and intelligent control
throughout the core shop.
Andreas Mössner is a hands-on businessman. Everything
seems to say it. His neat suit, his confident handshake, his
clearly arranged office. An app tells him how much extra
time he's gained since stopping smoking and cutting out
cigarette breaks. Time to live? More like time to work! As
the Managing Director of Laempe & Mössner GmbH, the
35-year-old’s schedule is pretty much full: his company sells
its products on five continents – and is expanding.
THE MECHANICAL AND PLANT
ENGINEERING COMPANY IS THE
WORLD MARKET LEADER in the
production of core shop technology
for foundries. In this respect,
the company has become a popular
partner to the automotive industry,
to rail carriage construction,
and to manufacturers of ship
engines, pumps and fittings. “For
our customers, we construct
machinery that makes cores,”
explains Mössner. These cores,
which consist of a hardened sand
mixture, function as place-holders
for the subsequent cavities in the
casting moulds. “The cores disappear
after the casting, leaving
sophisticated internal geometries
behind.” Cylinder heads, engine
and hydraulic units are just some
examples of the cast parts of this
kind.
THE RANGE OF PRODUCTS OF-
FERED BY LAEMPE & MÖSSNER
also includes – addition to the
core shooting – gassing units
which support the hardening of
the cores. The offering is rounded
off with sand mixers, sand preparation
systems and robot-supported
after-treatment solutions
for cores, for the de-bur ring of
the cores, for example. “And we
also oversee the networking
and intelligent management of
the entire core shop,” explains
Mössner. The company stands for
complete solutions: its employees
not only make and deliver the
machines, they also install them
at the customer’s premises, service
them and manufacture spare
parts. “Our strength is our support,
which is valued highly all over the
world,” says Mössner decisively.
Mössner views internationalisation
to be the key success factor. The
company has employees in offices
all over the world as well as a network
of 25 sales and service partners.
Mössner explains that he favours
local partners, particularly in places
where the local culture differs
markedly from the European
approach. “Take the plain speaking
that everyone here in Germany
likes. People in Asia can find that
really off-putting.” Mössner, who
studied industrial engineering,
previously lived in China for a
while with his wife, where he
developed a sales office. “Our
entire team there is Chinese. We
are now working on enabling our
colleagues there to carry out all of
their tech nical, support and sales
tasks more
independently than before.”
THE HIGH “MADE IN SAXONY-
ANHALT” QUALITY is also popular
in the USA, where the durability
of the machinery as well as their
efficiency, precision and reliability
are all valued. The good customer
references says Mössner, not
without a little pride, have helped
the company to develop its sales
activities in additional markets in
Asia and South America.
Even though Mössner will always
feel loyal to his home town of
Munich, he strongly recommends
Saxony-Anhalt to every entrepreneur:
“Those with an idea are taken
seriously – and supported.” Just
one email to the Otto von Guericke
University Magdeburg proved
enough: students and engineers
are now carrying out research
with engineers from Laempe
& Mössner into an approach for
the virtual simulation of mixing
processes.
NETWORKING OF SCIENCE AND
BUSINESS IN SAXONY-ANHALT
INNOVATIONS are the driving force for
dynamic and sustainable development, and therefore
a key success factor for businesses. Innovative companies
grow more quickly and are more successful over
the long term. Innovations can only advance effectively
in partnership, however.
This is an area in which Saxony-Anhalt is exemplary:
here, effective and practically-oriented networking
between the worlds of science and business has a
long tradition.

Rector of the Otto von Guericke
University Magdeburg
“The IFA Rotorion
Group, which
employs 2,200 people
worldwide, is the European
market leader for
the manufacturing of
drive shafts. We want
to stand out from our
competitors through
innovations and systemsbased
expertise. With
precise simulation software,
we can optimise
processes, increase the
productivity of existing
systems and further
develop proprietary
know-how. This means
that participating in this
project is of importance
for the new alignment
of our company.”
FRICTION
WELDING
PROCESSES 4.0
Rotational friction welding is a highly productive
process for connecting an exceptional variety of
components together. A sophisticated process with
s everal influencing factors.
THE DEVELOPMENT of new components
for the automotive industry
for example, starting from the
drawing board and through to the
prototypes, has traditionally been
a complicated and high-cost task.
With a software package for process
simulation which has been
developed at the Otto von Guericke
University Magdeburg (OvGU),
scientists, engineers and business
owners from Saxony-Anhalt want
to optimise the process of friction
welding.
“If one of my best scientific staff
approaches me with a good idea,
I feel I have no choice but to put
it to use,” emphasizes Professor
Dr. Ing. Jens Strackeljan, Rector of
the OvGU Magdeburg, discussing
his motivation for supporting the
project. The Professor is talking
about David Schmicker, who chose
to complete his dissertation on
the topic of “A holistic approach on
the simulation of Rotary Friction
Welding.” His goal is to develop a
simulation software which can depict
the friction welding processes
at the highest level of precision. It
is an innovation which would also
result in a clear improvement for
industrial businesses.
Comparing simulations and
reality for rotational friction
welding.
Sophisticated and high-cost
development processes could
therefore be shaped so that they
are considerably more effective
from both the temporal and
financial perspectives. Gerald
Langer, the Managing Director of
IFA Technologies GmbH, has also
recognised the potential: “In the
area of manufacturing, optimised
processes are of decisive importance
for the market viability.” In
the future, the European market
leader for drive shafts wants to
focus more strongly on the areas
of innovation and system expertise.
With the motto of “GO IFA”,
achieving a stronger differentiation
from the competition is being
pursued, with the ambitious
goal of achieving further better-than-average
rates of growth
over the coming years. “That's
a good enough reason to participate
in this project and help
shape the transfer from theory to
practice,” says Langer.
The project clearly demonstrates
THE EFFECTIVE and close networking
between the worlds of
science and business in Saxony
Anhalt. The necessary research
was completed in the course of
the scientific work at the OvGU in
Magdeburg, and the virtual RFW
software was created. The success
story stands out due to its short
distances, the close collaboration
between the research institutes
and the world of industry, and the
concerted action to strengthen
the locations in Saxony-Anhalt.
www.ovgu.de
ifa-group.com/en/
“The idea came
from doctoral
student David Schmicker,
who recognised the requirements
on location
and has the necessary
expertise for a successful
implementation. I can
see an excellent opportunity
for Saxony-Anhalt
and its businesses for
gaining a favourable
position in terms of the
interna tional competition.
I view our universities
as being a regional
engine for development,
to which we are providing
a key contribution
with the research work
of David Schmicker.
Work like this is of high
strategic importance for
the university and the
country.”

HOW DID
YOU HIT
ON THAT?
MARTIN ALTROCK
Servicing and Energy
Manager, MTU Reman
Technologies GmbH,
Magdeburg
“The energy transition
and energy
efficiency are topics of
the future for the areas
of research and business.
With the innovation
cluster ER-WIN® – which
(in German) stands for
‘Intelligent, energy and
resource-efficient regional
value added chains
in industry’ – we are
pursuing the vision of
an energy and resourceoptimised
industry park.
In this respect, projects
such as those with MTU
Reman Technologies
GmbH are the first
steps in improving the
understanding of processes
at the company
level and raising awareness
for potential.”
THE POWER OF
MEASUREMENTS
Everyone should try and save electricity. That’s something
that's been known for a long time. As a result of the energy
transition and the continuously increasing rates of competition,
companies are only compatible with the future if they
align their processes on an energy-efficient basis.
FINDING THE RIGHT TECHNIQUES
HERE and tracking down the ener
gy guzzlers is far from easy. The
staff from the ER-WIN® innovation
cluster at the Fraunhofer Institute
for Factory Operation and Automation
IFF in Magdeburg went on
search for them at the company
MTU Reman Technologies GmbH
Magdeburg, and were able to
present some astonishing results.
“We approach things differently
than conventional energy consultants,”
explains Dipl.-Wirt.-Ing.
Marc Kujath of ER-WIN®. “On the
basis of a comprehensive approach,
we are able to depict the resource
consumption of entire value added
chains or even individual components.”
In the analysis phase, each
individual machine was verified
and the energy consumption was
mea sured. What is more exciting,
how ever, is the monitoring of the
entire production process, all the
way through to the differentiation
of the components. In this respect,
reconditioning a crank-case at the
individual positions will lead to a
different level of energy consumption
than the reconditioning of a
cylinder head.
For MTU Reman Technologies
GmbH, which develops processes
ER-WIN® identifies “energy guzzlers”:
machines from MTU Reman
Technologies GmbH put to the test
and procedures for the reconditioning
of diesel and gas-powered
engines, this approach has
yielded new knowledge. “Before
this project, we were focusing
on completely different areas of
production as the biggest guzzlers
of energy,” reports Martin
Altrock, Manager of Servicing
and Energy at the company MTU
Reman Technologies GmbH. The
measuring systems that were
already used were only capable
of displaying some point-specific
potential energy savings. By depicting
the energy consumption
for the entire value added chain,
it is now possible to better assess
and manage the sequence of
processes.
In this example, THE CLOSE NET-
WORKING between the worlds
of science and business isn’t only
to be found at the factual level in
this example. The short paths between
the research institutions,
educational colleges and businesses
in Saxony-Anhalt are a clear
advantage for strengthening the
locations in the federal state.
One of the key focal points of the
research work of ER-WIN® is on
achieving a clear practical orientation
and economic feasibility. “It’s
no use to develop attractive visions
which nobody is ultimately
able to afford,” explains Kujath. In
the case of the project with MTU
Reman Technologies GmbH, one
of the results of the collaboration
was that it provided the basis
for the company's certification
according to DIN ISO 50001.
www.iff.fraunhofer.de
www.mtu-online.com
“We have already
implemented a
variety of projects with
the Fraunhofer IFF. Our
dealings with ER-WIN®,
however, first began
through one of the students
that was working
at our company. Their
comprehensive approach
for process optimisation
extends far beyond the
possibilities of our own
measurement systems.
Therefore, gaining such
a detailed depiction of
the energy requirement
in our company was only
possible on the basis of
a research project. We
were surprised by the
results, which have provided
us with some important
impetus for future
projects.”

is the task that Entertainer Energy GmbH has
set itself. A joint project with future potential.
The “Enertainer” and the “River Rider” are the first
developments of the company Enertainer Energy
GmbH, which was founded in 2011 by five entrepreneurs
from Central Germany. Steel constructors,
control engineers, installation technicans and planners
are combining their strengths to turn the idea
of decentralised hydropower plants into production
maturity. The goal is to make energy generation by
means of hydropower environmentally-friendly and
to open up new fields of business for the individual
partner companies in an important market of the
future. | www.enertainer-energy.de
and 1.5 metres in diameter.
Innovation and highly qualified specialists –
the recipe that has enabled citim GmbH in
Barleben near Magdeburg to be a sector leader
for more than 15 years. For the manufacturing
of functional components, prototypes and
small series products, citim also relies on
additive manufacturing.
PM TEC Rolls & Covers from Merseburg plans,
designs, manufactures and coats precision
rolls. Together with the University of Applied
Sciences Magdeburg-Stendal, a process for the
production of high-gloss mirror surfaces on
large rolls has now been developed.
To manufacture the precision surfaces of its large
rolls, PM TEC required its own technology platform
for the purpose of polishing and finishing. In just 18
months, a process-safe procedure was developed;
the result of a close, exceptionally well-coordinated
collaboration with the “Innovative Manufacturing
Processes” industrial laboratory at the university. The
researchers have the proof that finishing is usable
as a key technology in a variety of industrial sectors.
Due to the innovative process, PM TEC remains the
market leader. | www.pmtec-rc.de
High-tech solutions for pharmacies: Daniel
Gollmann, Managing Director of Gollmann
Kommissioniersysteme GmbH, develops intelligent
picking system solutions together
with a & m creative services.

RELATION
20
21
RELATION
There’s no doubt: the automated storage system has to adapt to the
pharmacy – and not the pharmacy to the storage system. That’s why the
company Gollmann Kommissioniersysteme GmbH constructs its GO.compact
picking system in customer-specific widths, lengths and heights.

RELATION 22
23
TAKING THE FIGHT TO
COMPUTER VIRUSES
HIT EXPORT
Putting resources to economical use:
storage logistics in the smallest of space.
The story of the company Gollmann Kommissioniersysteme
GmbH might have been written
in an entrepreneur’s handbook: in just a short
time, a company that “began life in a garage”
has become a respected medium-sized systems
manufacturer. And with its fully automated
shutter cabinet systems for pharmacies, the
Halle-based company has achieved a number
one hit.
JUST 60 SQUARE METRES in the back room of a
neighbourly systems manufacturer, but plenty
of space for ideas – that was the situation when
Dipl.-Ing. Daniel Gollmann founded the company
“Gollmann Kommissioniersysteme GmbH” in 2005
with his Swiss business partner Ivan Zwick in Halle.
Just ten years later, the systems manufacturer delivers
its machines to 13 countries, including Austria
and Switzerland, but also Australia, Italy and Spain.
That the idea got off the ground in the first place
was actually a coincidence and down to a friend of
Gollmann. This friend was working at a pharmacy
where she wanted to automate her medical storage
system. Yet the conventional automated systems
were either too big, too heavy or too expensive.
Daniel Gollmann came up with the solution: why
not use shutter cabinets like those in a library? He
developed a compact model made of lightweight
aluminium with a gripper arm. The same year, the
first automated storage systems were sold – and the
company moved from that back room to the historic
coffee factory buildings in Halle. These days, more
than 100 people work at the headquarters alone.
Daniel Gollmann has always believed in his ideas and
he is open to the knowledge of others. He not only
gathered a team of highly qualified professionals, including
from the fields of research and development,
design, production and sales for his company, he
also brought creative minds on board. The company
a&m creative services is a specialist in 3D visualisation
and makes things visible that are otherwise
hard to describe. "We wanted to show potential
customers what we can do," recalls Daniel Gollmann.
An ideal connection. Both business partners think
outside the box, are prepared to take risks, and develop
targeted solutions. "We knew immediately that
we would be able to benefit from each other," says
Karsten Angermann, one of a&m’s two directors.
A SIGNIFICANT COMPETENCY ADVANTAGE: The
team at a&m creative services draws on several years
of experience – as a manufacturer of CG image and
film material for customers in the automotive and
industrial goods sectors. Its technical thinking in combination
with its creative approach benefits both of
its partner companies. The systems manufacturer
has a clear competitive advantage in the areas of both
marketing and communication. With their powers
of presentation, the creative experts are setting new
standards in the B2B pharmacy market.
The GO.compact
390,000 new malware per day present the
developers of anti-virus software with considerable
challenges. AV-Test GmbH puts the
reliability and constancy of these programs
to the test. The Magdeburg-based developers
check anti-virus programs in real time worldwide.
They are specialists in the fight against
computer viruses.
IN A late-nineteen-century villa in Magdeburg's old
town, the world's most important IT security products
are put through their paces. Over two million files
are checked here per day with 30 virus scanners. A
data processing centre, test laboratory and development
environment all in one – that's AV-TEST GmbH.
Founded in 2004 by Magdeburg residents Andreas
Marx, Guido Habicht and Oliver Marx, today some
30 employees work at the Magdeburg company
that’s dedicated to superior IT security.
THE DEMAND for a sophisticated test process for
IT security products was recognised early on by
Andreas Marx, a business information specialist and
native citizen of Magdeburg. Due to the rapidly increasing
levels of internet crime in recent decades,
in the office buildings of today, having effective
data security has become as important as having
an alarm system. With our permanent testing
process, we provide manufacturers with real data
for the continuous improvement of their systems,"
emphasizes Marx, highlighting the innovative way
in which AV-TEST works.
INTERNATIONALITY and worldwide business relationships
are included with all of the products and
services. Germany is only home to a few manufacturers
of anti-virus programs. Yet AV-TEST didn’t
choose to set up in Magdeburg simply because
Andreas Marx wanted to stay in his home town.
“The university, with its Faculty of Computer Science
and Working Group for Multimedia & Security, is
on our doorstep, and is exceptionally important for
both our student projects, but also for our search
for employees,” explains Marx. “Low living costs
and a high quality of life also make Magdeburg a
great place in which to work.”
www.gollmann.co.uk
Magdeburg virus hunters looking for
clues: for 50 manufacturers from all
over the world, the specialists from
AV-Test have been getting to the bottom
of the effectiveness of anti-virus software.

INNOVATION AS
A KEY FOR
COMPETITIVENESS
WINNER OF THE BESTFORM AWARD: MONA MIJTHAB AND
THE GERMAN SOCIETY FOR INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION
Designer Mona Mijthab and the German Society for International Cooperation
(GIZ) have set themselves the task of improving the catastrophic sanitation
situation in the poverty-stricken, densely populated urban areas of developing
countries. For this purpose, a "mobile sanitation unit" has been developed – a
small, lightweight sit-down toilet which works without electricity or water. The
excrement is used recycled into raw materials such as biogas, compost fertiliser
and fire briquettes, which benefit the population. Designer Mona Mijthab of
Saxony-Anhalt was presented the BESTFORM AWARD 2013 for her innovation. |
www.mona-mijthab.com
As the federal state’s central funding agency,
the Investment Bank Saxony-Anhalt
(IB) realises the promotion of economic
development on a targeted basis and
supports companies in an advisory capacity. It pays
close attention to the promotion of research and
development as well as innovation. One example of
this is the INNOVATION ASSISTANT, which has been
on offer since 1994.
The IB has been accepting new applications for the
INNOVATION ASSISTANT since the end of February.
What is behind this programme?
RENO PAUL: Saxony-Anhalt is home to many small
and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The INNOVA-
TION ASSISTANT intends to bring highly qualified
university
graduates into companies. This allows the latest
know-how to be transferred directly into the economy.
How is this implemented?
MANUELA SACHER: When someone joins a business
fresh from the university, they usually only have
limited work experience, but their specialist knowledge
is cutting edge. For a company, this presents
both opportunities and risks. The funding we provide
enables companies to afford specialist staff and
makes it easier for graduates to start their careers. For
example, in 2013, with the help of the INNOVATION
ASSISTANT, the company Leukhardt Schaltanlagen
Systemtechnik GmbH from Magdeburg hired a highly
qualified specialist for electrical engineering. The
knowledge that the specialist provided enabled the
company to access new services and product segments
and to achieve an improved market position.
For whom is the funding available?
RENO PAUL: All commercial SMEs with permanent
operations in Saxony-Anhalt which hire a graduate
for a newly created position here in the federal state.
For example, for a project in research/development,
product development or product design. The graduate
must have a degree in engineering, natural
sciences, economics or the creative sector.
MANUELA SACHER: Very important: the employment
relationship must not already exist at the time
of application.
How high is the available subsidy?
RENO PAUL: For a maximum of two innovation assistants,
up to 50 percent of the staff costs are subsidised
for a two-year period. For each full-time job, this
amounts to a maximum of 30,000 Euros per year.
What do you recommend to applicants?
RENO PAUL: Arrange an appointment with the
Investment Bank. We can then provide you with
initial feedback as to whether any possible funding
is available for the project.
