Caterham Drive celebrate
the Royal Wedding in style!
On Saturday 19th May the residents of Caterham Drive in Old Coulsdon held their
very own celebrations in honour of the Royal Wedding by holding a traditional
Street Party! The amazing party organised by Sarah Sheridan and Rachel Becket
Strachan with the help of several other Caterham Drive residents was an incredible
success with neighbours from up and down the street all getting together to
celebrate in such a joyous occassion! The community spirit was at an all time high
and it was a wonderful event that will be remembered for years to come!
Coconut Seafood Curry
Serves 4
Ready in 50 minutes
Full of flavour, this speedy
curry is great for a summer
supper. Replace the
asparagus tips with green
beans or sugar snap peas,
if liked. Serve with boiled
noodles or steamed Thai
jasmine rice.
Ingredients
• 1tbsp vegetable oil
• 8 shallots, peeled and halved
• 2-3 tbsp Thai green curry
paste (see Tip)
• 225g new potatoes, scrubbed
and halved
• 1 large carrot, peeled and
thinly sliced
• 400ml can reduced fat
coconut milk
• 150ml vegetable stock
• 2tbsp light soy sauce
• 450g cod fillet, skinned and
cut into chunks
• 175g fine asparagus tips
• Juice from 1 lime
• 200g cooked tiger prawns,
thawed if frozen
• 2tbsp freshly chopped
coriander
• Salt and freshly ground black
pepper
• Chopped red chilli and fresh
coriander leaves, to garnish
TIP
Heat the oil in a large
deep frying pan over a medium heat and fry the
shallots for 5 minutes until golden. Stir in the Thai
green curry paste and cook for 1 minute.
Add the potatoes, carrot, coconut milk, stock
and soy sauce. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the
vegetables are almost tender.
Add the chunks of cod and asparagus tips to
the pan. Cover and simmer gently for a further
6-8 minutes until the fish is just cooked and
beginning to flake.
Gently stir in the lime juice, tiger prawns and
chopped coriander. Simmer for 5 minutes until
the prawns are piping hot, then season to taste
with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve
in warmed bowls garnished with chopped chilli
and coriander leaves.
Brands of Thai green curry paste can vary in
spiciness so check on the jar before adding. If you
want a really fiery flavour, fry 1 chopped small red
chilli pepper with the shallots.
folk rushing for the train… I can
breathe. The air here has rarely
felt so clean; I’ve never seen the
city with so much sky.” So writes
blogger Sam Haddad on the
website mpora.com, describing
his night-time journey along the
Thames in – of all things – a kayak.
Sam is just one of a growing
number of outdoor adventurers
who like to explore the UK’s rivers,
lakes and coastal waters by kayak
as darkness falls. It’s one of those
off-the-wall activities that have
recently grown in popularity and
are particularly favoured by social
media users looking for quirky and
unusual experiences to post on
Facebook or Instagram.
The Oxford Dictionary defines a
‘kayak’ as “a canoe of a type used
originally by the Inuit, made of
a light frame with a watertight
covering having a small opening in
the top to sit in”. These vessels are
supplied with a twin-bladed double
paddle, which is used to propel the
kayak through the water.
Kayaks are light, manoeuvrable
and hard to capsize, but to the
average landlubber a kayak may
not seem the obvious choice for
a nocturnal adventure in a busy
waterway. It’s hard to understand
the attraction of this type of
transport until you hear the firsthand
accounts of people who
have actually experienced night
kayaking: “It was like a dream”
…“We couldn’t stop talking
about our experience for days”
… “Outstanding and magical.”
(Comments left by first-time night
kayakers on the travel site Trip
Advisor.)
Participants who go night-kayaking
in cities enthuse about the beauty
of buildings silhouetted against
the evening sky, the reflection of
city lights on the water and the
magnification of small sounds
you would be unlikely to hear
during the day. Those who prefer
to explore rural waterways, lakes
or coastal areas wax lyrical about
the brightness and clarity of the
moon and stars, as well as the
opportunity to spot nocturnallyroaming
wildlife such as owls, seals
and otters.
Don’t underrate the risks
Despite being an enthusiastic
proponent of night-kayaking, experienced
sea kayaker Duncan Smith
is aware of the dangers: “On nights
where the moon is not providing
natural light you are more reliant
on your night vision. This can be
cut dramatically by the glare from
any head-torch or deck light you
carry and whilst you can see into
the distance … it can be difficult
to see/read the water in front of
you.” He adds: “Sound seems
amplified in the dark, to the point
when tiny waves breaking on the
pebbled shore can sound like huge,
dumping surf.”
Dipping your toe in the water
If you’re keen to try kayaking by
night but have never used a kayak
before, you should take your first
trip under the guidance of an
experienced leader. Organised
excursions are available across
the UK, with many different
experiences to choose from:
try kayaking in rural Perthshire
(where you’ll end up toasting
marshmallows around a camp
fire); exploring the city of Bristol’s
historic harbour by moonlight; or
taking an LED illuminated trip up
the Helford River in Cornwall. Most
excursions include instructions
on how to handle a kayak, but if
you’re in any doubt about whether
the route would be suitable for
you, you should check with the
operator prior to booking.
Join a club
If you are already familiar with
kayaks but have never ventured
out at night, you could join a club
for support, companionship and
advice. There are numerous kayak
clubs throughout Britain – contact
the British Canoeing Union
(britishcanoeing.org.uk) to find
your nearest group, but be aware
that not all clubs practice kayaking
after dark.
When you read the testimonials
of people who have experienced
night-kayaking, it’s easy to
understand why it creates such a
sense of awe and wonder. Noisy
daytime environments become
peaceful, skies become bigger
and familiar landscapes take on
an eerie new beauty. But most
seasoned kayakers will also admit
to enjoying the moment when they
reach dry land, looking forward to
the chance to warm up over a pint
or two in a cosy local pub.
Creative Containers by Pippa Greenwood
Colourful containers are a
welcome sight in any garden, and
pots, planters and troughs can
transform a dull back yard or a
gloomy terrace or patio. But rather
than just using containers from the
garden centre, why not make some
wackier, more unusual planters?
With a little bit of imagination and
ingenuity, it is amazing what you
can achieve.
Plastic flower pots, especially the
larger ones, make a useful and
practical home for all sorts of
flowers, but they’re not exactly
pretty. Use them, by all means, but
transform that boring plastic by
wrapping it in hessian. Available in
a range of colours from classic pale
brown to reds, greens and blues,
it’s weather tolerant and tough but
looks great.
Plastic pots can also be made
more exciting with a bit of planting
around the sides. Before you fill
the pot with compost, cut holes
just over an inch in diameter at
regular intervals around the sides
of the pot. There you have it:
you’ve created a planter with great
side-planting holes, perfect for
small bedding plants, allowing you
make a tower of flower power.
Just fill with compost to the base
of the lowermost holes, add plants
through the holes, add more
compost to the next layer of holes
and continue upwards, finishing off
with plenty of colour on the top.
Acrylic paints are a great way to
colour a boring or discoloured
container, and they’re quick drying
too. Go for a single colour to match
in with existing garden features, or
even the colour of your front door
or window frames. Alternatively,
create a pattern of wild, fantastic
colours and make your own
planted-up art gallery.
Get creative with some mosaic
tiles from your local craft or hobby
store. Covering a container may
Gardening
take a while, but it’ll be a lot of
fun and if time is short you could
always just make a mosaic rim. Use
rich colours to make a Moroccan
style pot. When winter comes,
its best to bring a mosaic pot
into a frost-free spot to ensure it
weathers the worst of the weather
in style, or if you can get hold of
the grouting adhesive used for
swimming pools that should make
it more weather resistant.
The bigger the tyre, the bigger the
planter – from wheelbarrow to
tractor, there’s lots of potential.
Make a deeper planter by stacking
two or more tyres on top of each
other, fill with compost and get
planting. For a really striking
effect, plant trailing flowers such
as trailing geraniums around the
edges so that they cascade over
the sides.
Try planting up an aged
wheelbarrow: it’s great for a larger
display or even for permanent
planting, and as long as the
wheel still goes around you can
even move the display around to
brighten up different areas of your
garden! If there are no holes in the
pan of the barrow, make sure you
place a layer of gravel or stones in
the base so that the compost does
not become waterlogged.
40 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
Turn a punctured wellington boot
or one that’s simply too small into
a stylish planter. Fill the foot and
ankle area with gravel or grit for
drainage and to make the wellie
more stable and less likely to fall
over, add compost and plant up
the top. You can also use acrylic
paints to jazz up a boring pair of
wellies, but make sure the paint
is totally dry before you start
planting.
Don’t bin your old gardening,
walking or work boots as they
have planting potential too, and
because they tend to have heavier
soles and are lower to the ground
they can even make useful planters
in a less-sheltered place. Plant up
with bright bedding, or for a longterm
display use a few house-leeks
or sempervivums – their fleshy
rosettes of leaves in shades of
green and purple look great!
An old kitchen or bathroom sink
can be put to good use, but don’t
forget to pull the plug out before
you add the compost or else you’ll
end up with no drainage and
the plants will quickly become
waterlogged and die – but then
again, if you leave the plug in place
and add some sealant to ensure
that it is firmly in place, you could
always make a miniature water
garden.
For a serious show-stopper, I’ve
even seen a loo cistern packed
full of trailing plants including
blue and white lobelia and trailing
silvery foliage plants. The mass
of blue, white and silver made a
great waterfall of colour from an
otherwise boring water closet.
Finance By Ann Haldon
How Much Money Will You Need For Your Retirement?
There’s a general consensus in the
press that, to live comfortably in
retirement, you need a pension of
at least £20,000 a year. Where you
live obviously makes a difference
to the costs, but in general,
people’s idea of what constitutes
a ‘comfortable’ retirement also
differs.
So, if like many people you’re
unsure how much you’ll need in
retirement, how can you find out?
The first step is to look at your
essential expenditure such as
mortgage or rent payments, food
and heating, and only then think
about the ‘nice to have’ aspects
of daily life that do make it more
comfortable.
Focus on your expenditure initially
Rather than obtaining pension
statements and forecasts first,
it’s a good idea to calculate how
much you’ll need for the essentials
in retirement, taking into account
what your circumstances might be
in the future rather than now.
If you pay your bills by direct
debit, have a look at your bank
statements for regular household
outgoings such as mortgage,
utilities, council tax and house
insurance. Then you can factor
in the cost of emergency repairs
such as boiler or car breakdowns.
The total is the sum you’ll need to
cover using a guaranteed income.
After this, consider the items
that aren’t essential, but that
you wouldn’t necessarily want
to live without – a TV package,
for example, or high speed
broadband. Lastly, factor in the
activities that would be nice to
enjoy, such as eating out regularly
or going to the theatre. Pension
forecasts and statements
Once you’ve calculated your
expenditure, you can obtain a state
pension forecast from the gov.
uk website. Work and personal
pension statements should be
available by phone or in writing
from your pension provider(s), and
there are also a number of online
‘pension calculators’ that give you
an idea of how much you might
receive.
What expenses will you save in
retirement?
• If you’re currently supporting
your family or making mortgage
repayments, these expenses may
not be relevant once you retire.
Not having to commute to work
is also a significant cost-saving
for some.
• Many people choose to downsize
their property in retirement – if
this is on the cards for you, it
would release a lump sum of
cash to pay off any debts you
have remaining, invest for an
income, or to pay future house
maintenance costs, for example.
So now you’ve got all the figures
you need, how do you access your
pension pot when the time comes?
Pension freedoms
The pension reforms that were
introduced in April 2015 give you
much greater choice in the way
you access your pension pot.
Prior to this, an annuity had to
be purchased which provided a
guaranteed income for life.
Although this option remains
available and is commonly used,
it’s no longer the only one. With
professional pension advice, you
can maximise your pension savings
whilst also ensuring you avoid the
significant pension pitfalls that
now exist.
Pension mistakes that could
jeopardise your retirement
Do you have enough ‘qualifying
48 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
years’ for the full state pension?
You currently need 35 qualifying
years of National Insurance
contributions to receive a full state
pension. You can check for any
gaps in your National Insurance
record by requesting the state
pension forecast mentioned
earlier, available via the gov.uk
website.
Could you outlive your pension
savings?
It’s possible that you could outlive
your pension savings if you take
out too much money too early.
It’s crucial to seek professional
help on the most tax-efficient
ways to access your pension, so
you don’t risk reducing its value
unnecessarily.
Beware pension scams
One of the downsides of the new
pension freedoms is that con
artists have been able to swindle
people out of their hard-earned
pensions. Scams such as those
offering tax-free transfers to
dubious investment schemes, or
suggested legal ‘loopholes’ that
allow you to avoid paying tax, have
been widespread in recent years.
So essentially, there are three
factors when it comes to thinking
about money in retirement:
• How much money you’ll need to
live on each month.
• How you’re going to achieve this
level of income.
• How you’ll manage your money.
With the help of pension
professionals, and the facts and
figures at your fingertips, hopefully
you’ll make the most of your longawaited
retired life.
• 150ml double cream
• 150g blueberries
• 2 small bananas, peeled
and thinly sliced and
tossed in a little lemon
juice
• Approximately 12
strawberries, hulled and
halved
Serves 6, Ready in 1 hour 50
minutes, plus cooling
TIP
If you don’t have ceramic
baking beans to weigh the
pastry down when baking,
use uncooked rice or dried
beans.
1. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl
and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub
the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles
fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and orange zest.
2. Make a well in the centre and add the egg yolk and
1 tbsp cold water. Mix with a round-bladed knife to
a rough dough, adding a few more drops of water if
needed. Knead very lightly until just smooth, shape
into a flat disc and wrap in cling film. Chill for 30
minutes.
3. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and
use to line a 20cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Prick
the pastry base all over with a fork. Chill for a further
20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas
mark 6 and place a baking sheet in the oven to heat
up.
4. Line the pastry case with baking paper then fill with
ceramic baking beans (see TIP) and bake ‘blind’ on
the hot baking sheet for 15 minutes. Remove the
paper lining and beans and bake for a further 10-12
minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Leave to
cool completely.
5. To make the filling, beat the mascarpone, vanilla
extract and sugar in a large bowl until smooth.
Gradually beat in the double cream. Spread the filling
in the cold pastry case.
6. Arrange the blueberries, banana slices and
strawberries on top of the filling to represent the
American stars and stripes flag with a blueberry
border. Serve immediately or chill in the fridge until
required (only decorate with the fruit 1-2 hours
before serving).
Another Spain
When the weather turns for the better,
however temporarily, and the end of year
approaches for school children across the
country, thoughts turn to escape.
Away from the day-to-day hurly-burly,
(such as the inevitable traffic jam in Coulsdon
caused by muppets blocking the road as they
attempt to ram their very expensive, oversized,
pretend off-road 4 x 4 into an already
full Aldi’s car park to save pennies, when they
could have saved thousands by buying a car
that just did the job they needed it for) away
from work, away from home. The overseas
holiday, despite, or maybe because of, the
ongoing Brexit row, remains increasingly
popular according to the Office of National
Statistics. The locations vary, as last year’s
must see becomes this year’s has been, but
since the dawn of the package tour in the
1960’s, Spain remains uppermost in the
average British holidaymaker’s mind.
Personally, I haven’t been. I’ve seen
some of France, Belgium, Germany and Italy.
Explored parts of Croatia,
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Austria and the Czech
Republic. I’ve even got as far as bits of China,
Canada, the USA and Australia. But somehow
I’ve managed to miss Spain. I’ve not done it
deliberately. At least, I don’t think so.
Then again, perhaps in my subconscious I am
rebelling against the near-reflex action for so
many to just jump on a cheap flight South,
and head for the Costa del Sol or the Balearics.
Marbella, Torremolinos, Benidorm, the
last now the title of a TV sit-com, all sum up a
certain attitude to holidaymaking that I just
don’t get. Magaluf, nicknamed ‘Shagaluf’ in
many quarters, has British-staffed
emergency medical centres close to its bar
and club strip to cope with the copious victims
of binge-drinking, the result of low alcohol
and fast food pricing. It’s got so that the
reputation of Magaluf is affecting the tourism
for elsewhere on Mallorca.
There is in many, this seemingly very British
attitude to travelling abroad, which is to be
in a foreign country but not experience it.
They want the weather, warm, sunny, dry, but
they also want fish and chips, the brands of
lager they get at home, Sky Sports and British
papers. For some you can add clubbing, for
others golf.
But on their return, they’ll be no more familiar
with the country they’ve just spent 10 days in
than they were before they left.
Which is frankly bonkers.
Now that’s a personal opinion, but really?
Spain as a country has a positive wealth of culture,
cuisine and history, due in no small part
to its Moorish occupation for seven centuries.
It was one of the first truly global empires,
pre-dating the British and leaving as a legacy
500 million Spanish-speaking people, making
it the second most widely-spoken language in
the world after Mandarin Chinese.
The Alhambra in Granada, a Moorish
fortress that became a spectacular palace,
and the whole of the Old City of Toledo, once
capital of the Kingdom of the Visigoths
(How ‘Game of Thrones’ does that sound?),
are UNESCO World Heritage sites worth hours
of one’s time. But there are 44 other such
sites across Spain, and only two other
countries in the world have more.
Spanish red wine, tapas and dancing versus
cheap lager, a kebab and clubbing. I shall
get to Spain, hopefully soon, but I might see
a very different country to the one so many
choose. But then, a holiday is a holiday, and
a very personal choice. Have fun, whatever
you decide to do, but maybe, just maybe, look
just a little further afield than the usual tourist
strip and the beach. You might be very
pleasantly surprised. Hasta la vista…
The Power of Love
Honestly I was not particularly excited about
the Royal Wedding. The hubris in the press
in the work-up to the big day had irritated
me: Yes they have chosen a cake, or flowers
or a venue – it barely seemed newsworthy. I
was certainly not a nay-sayer but merely
ambivalent.
However my mother was most certainly
going to watch the service and so we took
the opportunity to watch together. I find the
commentary sycophantic and cringe-worthy
but mercifully that was brought to an end by
the service itself. And what a service it was!
Much can be said about the music and
participants but it was the sermon that
seemed to cause the most interest and
debate. Many people loved it, others mocked
whilst others were offended. If he was trying
to get people’s attention the Rev Curry
certainly achieved it. Some of that response
was probably primarily directed at his spirited
and charismatic delivery – a style that, despite
commentary in the press, is not that unusual
in the UK church. However it was certainly
not what we have come to expect from a
vicar at a Royal Function. For many it appears
that the version of Christianity that is
preferred is meek, staid and utterly
predictable – a type of ‘lift music’ in sermon
form. Whilst I appreciate that people place
great value in the traditions of the church and
the Royal establishment I am fairly confident
that one sermon is unlikely to change public
perception of either for better or worse
(pun intended). However it is what he said
that interested me far more than simply his
animated style.
Rev Curry spoke of love; not confined to
a slushy romantic notion; but full-bodied,
powerful, redemptive love. Some people
commented that it was ridiculous to think
that love would deal with hunger – though I
would question what else if not love stands
any chance. Love is the best of human virtue
in its truest form. It has the power to move
people to change. It enables reconciliation.
As he emphasised, it is redemptive. This love
of which he spoke to fervently is found in
God; in fact the Bible boldly assets that God
is love. Not simply that he can be loving, but
that he defines its very nature. Better still, he
has shared his love with us and invites us to
respond.
I hope you had a chance to listen to the
sermon – it’s a worthwhile 15 minutes of your
time. I end with a quote from it:
“This is the way of love, it is the way of life…
He died to save us all. He didn’t die for anything
he could get out of it. Jesus did not get an
honorary doctorate for dying. He didn’t’ he
wasn’t getting anything out of it. He gave up
his life, he sacrificed his life, for the good of
others, for the wellbeing of the world…for
us. That’s what love is. Love is not selfish and
self-centred. Love can be sacrificial and in so
doing, becomes redemptive. And that way of
unselfish, sacrificial, redemptive love changes
lives and it can change this world.”
Have a great month.
Health By
Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
Health Screenings: What’s Available?
Screening programmes are
designed to identify health
problems at an early stage, and
the NHS offer many free screening
programmes, beginning before
we’re born.
PREGNANCY AND POST-NATAL
SCREENINGS
If you’re pregnant, you will usually
be offered a blood test for
hepatitis B, HIV and syphilis
before you’re 10 weeks pregnant.
Early treatment reduces the risk
of passing infection to your baby.
You’ll also be offered screening
for thalassaemia and sometimes
sickle cell disease before 10
weeks, as it’s important to
establish whether you’re a carrier.
Screenings for your unborn baby:
• 8-14 weeks: a ‘dating scan’. This
ultrasound checks your baby’s
development and will confirm
your due date and if you’re
expecting more than one baby.
• 10-14 weeks: screening for
Down’s syndrome, Patau’s
syndrome and Edwards’ syndrome.
This combines a blood
test with an ultrasound scan
and can be done alongside your
dating scan.
• 18-21 weeks: The ‘mid-pregnancy
anomaly scan’, an ultrasound to
check for physical abnormalities.
Soon after birth, babies are
given a physical examination and
a blood spot ’heel prick’ test for
several inherited diseases
including cystic fibrosis, plus a
hearing test before 3 months of
age.
SCREENING FOR TEENS AND
ADULTS
Diabetics aged 12 and over: the
annual diabetic eye test checks
for early signs of diabetic
retinopathy (damage to blood
vessels in the retina).
Women aged between 25 and 64:
Cervical screening (a ‘smear test’)
is offered to check the health
of cells in the cervix. Changes in
these cells can often be
benevolent but may also be an
early sign of cervical cancer.
Women are screened every three
years from 26 to 49 and every
five years from the ages of 50 to
64. This quick test is usually done
at your GP surgery by a doctor
or nurse, who will gently remove
some cells from the surface of
your cervix.
Over 40s: You may be invited for
a general health check every five
years.
Women aged 50 to 70: Breast
screening, via an X-ray called a
mammogram, can detect early
signs of breast cancer. Women
over 70 can self-refer.
Over 55s: In some parts of
England, bowel scope screening
to detect bowel cancer is offered.
The large bowel is examined via
a thin, flexible tube with a tiny
camera.
Aged 60 to 74: Every two years,
you will be sent a home testing
kit called the faecal occult blood
(FOB) test, which can detect
blood in your stool. The presence
of blood indicates further testing
is required.
Men at age 65: Abdominal aortic
aneurysm (AAA) screening is offered
to detect dangerous
swelling in the aorta. Men over 65
can self-refer.
PRIVATE SCREENINGS
Many private health companies
advertise a range of additional
screening tests, which you will
have to pay for unless they form
part of an introductory offer or
membership scheme.
Some of the tests offered are not
recommended by the UK National
Screening Committee, as it isn’t
72 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
clear that their benefits outweigh
the harm they may cause.
If you want to know more about
private screening, the UK NSC has
produced a downloadable leaflet
on private screening which you
can access here:
www.gov.uk/government/
publications/leaflet-thinking-ofhaving-a-private-screening-test/
private-screening-important-facts.
SCREENING COULD SAVE YOUR
LIFE
Although NHS screenings are
offered to everyone eligible, it’s
your choice whether to have
them. Screenings and their results
can cause anxiety and give rise
to difficult decisions, especially
where pregnancy screenings
are concerned. There may be a
small risk of false negatives and
positives, and more tests may be
required.
However, remember that an hour
or less spent at a screening could
save your life (or that of a loved
one). Diagnosing and treating
conditions swiftly is the best way
to reduce their impact and
prevent them from becoming
more severe.
MORE INFORMATION
While private health companies
advertise additional screenings,
some aren’t recommended by the
UK National Screening
Committee, as it isn’t clear that
their benefits outweigh the
harm they may cause. For more
information, see the NSC’s leaflet
on private screening: www.gov.
To find out more about screenings
and their pros and cons, you can
History
How We Fell in Love with Perfume By Catherine Rose
The word perfume is derived from
the Latin per fumum, meaning
‘through smoke’.
This is possibly because the
perfumes of ancient civilisations
were often incense-based – a dried
paste made from herbs, spices,
essential oils and fragrant tree
resins (including the biblical
frankincense and myrrh), which
was made to be burned.
Today, true perfumes are a distillation
of a certain percentage of
oils in alcohol, with eau de toilette
and eau de cologne being diluted
versions.
The perfume-making process was
described by Pliny the Elder, a
well-known Roman philosopher
who was born around twenty
years after the death of Christ. But
although the Romans were wellknown
to be very fastidious in their
toilet habits, perfume very much
pre-dates them. Used significantly
across Asian cultures, it is believed
perfume may have originated in
Arabia – still sometimes described
as ‘the land of perfumes’. The
perfume formulas of a female
Mesopotamian chemist known as
Tapputi-Bellatekalim have been
translated from a three-thousandyear-old
tablet written in ancient
cuneiform script.
In the ancient world, perfumes
were much more than just pleasant
smells – they were also revered.
The Bible refers to a sacred perfume,
only allowed to be used by
priests, that was made from myrrh,
cinnamon, cassia and sweet cane,
and the ancient Egyptians believed
perfume was ‘the sweat of the
gods’.
Ancient Hindu Ayurvedic texts
dating back to 3000 BC refer to
perfume’s distillation. In India, a
variety of fragrances were used
in tantric rituals where women
would be spiritually anointed with
different oils for every part of their
body.
In 2004, the oldest evidence of
perfume was discovered with the
remains of a Bronze Age perfume
‘factory’ unearthed in Cyprus.
It is thought that 13th century
Crusaders brought back perfume
from Palestine, and its use was eagerly
taken up by Europe’s nobility.
The Sun King Louis XIV, who ruled
France from 1643-1715, loved
perfume so much that his palace
became known as ‘the perfume
court’. This might have had something
to do with the fact that, like
most of the nobility at that time,
he was loathe to take baths, believing
(quite understandably) that
water made you ill.
King Louis had a different perfume
for every day and installed a pavilion
that he kept filled with flowers
and would visit with his mistresses.
He insisted on dousing every
palace visitor with scent and the
most important had their own
signature perfumes.
One of his favourite perfumes,
used to fragrance his shirts, was
called Aqua Angeli (‘water of
angels’) and consisted of, amongst
other ingredients, nutmeg, cloves,
jasmine, orange flowers, musk and
aloe wood, all boiled in rose petal
water.
During this time, France became a
force in Europe for the manufacture
and supply of fine perfumes,
and Grasse in southern France,
renowned for its natural variety of
flowers, was a leading supplier.
In England, where sanitation was
also abysmal and disease rife,
74 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
perfumes were not only worn; they
were also kept inside jewellery and
the heads of canes to be inhaled by
the wearer for health-giving properties
and to ward off illness.
As well as essential oils from
flowers and plants, ingredients for
perfume were also derived from
animal excretions. Castor was
extracted from beavers, musk
from male deer and ambergris
from the sperm whale.
In the 1800s, synthetic fragrances
made an appearance, their less
expensive ingredients allowing
for the first mass marketing of
perfumes, thus launching famous
companies that are still around
today such as Coty and Guerlain.
It was discovered, for example,
that a mixture of nitric acid and
benzene gave off a scent like
almonds, so this was consequently
used in soap. It is not possible to
obtain essential oils from some
flowers, lily of the valley for
instance, so the development of
synthetic scents proved ideal to
replicate them.
With mass marketing, perfume
bottle design became increasingly
important and the Art Nouveau
period saw the launch of many
beautiful styles, some of them
designed by the artisans of the era
such as Rene Lalique.
Then in 1921, Chanel created her
signature scent, Chanel No. 5, with
the help of Grasse parfumier Ernest
Beaux who had made perfumes for
the Russian royal family. Under her
direction, he gave her numbered
samples to choose from – the rest
is history.
Today our love of perfume remains
undiminished and fragrances are
popular with both men and
women. But one thing hasn’t
changed in that, even used daily,
perfume is still viewed as a
gloriously indulgent and luxury
item – pure olfactory pleasure in
a bottle.

Technology
It’s amazing to think that we were still getting snow
back in March: just weeks later and it’s June, which
even the UK usually manages to get through without
any blizzards. Who knows, we might even get a long
hot summer this time – and if we do, technology is
happy to help.
If you’re planning to party on the
summer equinox, the longest day
of the year, it’s worth getting some
long-lasting gadgets such as the UE
Boom 2 portable speaker. It’s loud but
not too loud, portable but not too small, and it’s
waterproof because it’s sold in Britain. At around
£93 it’s pricier than many but is solid, sounds great
and is well made – plus the battery lasts for 15 hours
of tunes from a single charge. It’s a really great
speaker for outdoor entertaining.
If you’re barbecuing, technology can
help. The superb Looftlighter (around
£45 on eBay or £55 in the shops)
can ensure charcoal lights instead
of smokes, and a BBQ thermometer
can make sure food is properly cooked. We love the
Thermapen instant read thermometer (around £50)
but for an even more high-tech option there are
Bluetooth-enabled meat thermometers that send
readings to your smartphone so you don’t even
need to lift the lid. Weber’s excellent iGrill 3 (£89.99)
is one of the best around, but there are more
affordable options too.
HERE COMES SUMMER:
TECH FOR OUTDOOR LIVING
There’s a new entry in the outdoor lighting
market: Philips, which has brought its Hue
smart lighting system to gardens too.
We love Hue for its ability to create
all kinds of light “recipes” and
effects and to do so from a phone
or tablet, and you can now mix 16
million different colours outdoors too. The catch,
inevitably, is cost: the wall-mountable Lily spotlight
is about £260 and the pedestal lamp around £125. It
might be worth waiting for rivals to follow Philips’
lead: Hue-style indoor bulbs are widely available for
a lot less than Philips chargers and we’d expect the
same to happen with outdoor lighting too. Don’t
try and cut corners with normal Hue
bulbs in standard lamp fittings unless
those fittings are large and properly
waterproof. They might not work
anyway: your home’s exterior walls
may block the connection between the
lights and the Hue hub, which has to be connected
to your internet router.
Sadly, living in the UK means even a warm day
doesn’t stay too warm for long, and many of us turn
2 to outdoor heating. Don’t buy a heater that heats
the air; it’s a waste of money, because most
of the energy goes on heating the air
nobody’s actually in. Gas heaters
are the least efficient: consider a
modern infra-red (not near-infra-red)
electric heater, which heats the surfaces
it’s pointed at (including people), or a halogen one
if you don’t want to spend a few hundred pounds.
A good tabletop or free-standing halogen heater
doesn’t cost too much to buy or run – about 9p
per kilowatt hour, with heaters starting at around
3
£39 – but make sure your seating area is
sheltered as a stiff breeze can undo the
work of any outdoor heater.

heart of the borough’s famous Restaurant
Quarter.
The hugely popular FREE event, which
attracted more than 12,000 people last
summer, will once again see the ‘villagey’
South End closed to traffic to allow visitors to
relax and enjoy the carnival atmosphere.
Visitors can sample world cuisine from dozens
of street food and restaurant stalls, dining
alfresco at tables along the street. There will be
cocktail and prosecco bars for the grown-ups
– and street performers and entertainment for
the children throughout the afternoon.
Peter Bagatti, SCBA deputy chairman and
owner of Bagatti’s Restaurant, on South End,
who are taking part in the event, added:
“Last year’s festival was a fantastic day which
showcased our exciting and fast changing
borough at its very best.
“It brought together people of all backgrounds
and cultures to enjoy great food and music in a
happy, carnival atmosphere. And bringing people
together is what the Croydon Food & Music
Festival is all about."
Two featured stages will host top class acts and
bands performing every genre of music from
folk and rock to jazz and blues.
The festival was founded by South Croydon
Business Association (SCBA) and organised on
their behalf by White Label Creative. It is also
sponsored by Bagatti’s Restaurant,
10 Electric Vehicle Myths Busted
by James Baggot
The age of the electric car is
very much upon us. However,
with cutting-edge technology
packed into each vehicle, it
can be tricky to understand
how they work and what the
benefits of owning one are.
Here, we try and debunk some
of the key myths surrounding
electric cars.
1. You can’t boil the kettle while
charging an electric car
A National Grid report warned
last year that home networks
might struggle to cope with
high-capacity car charging.
While this is theoretically true,
EV owners with a low-capacity
home network wouldn’t have a
high-capacity charger, meaning
that there’s little chance of the
network being overloaded.
2. EVs are more expensive than
petrol and diesel cars
While it’s generally true that the
base price of an EV will be a bit
more expensive, manufacturers
make up for this by offering
a generous specification so
that once you’ve taken the
government’s £4,500 zeroemission
vehicle grant into
account, they’re actually a
pretty good deal, and that’s
before you even look at the low
running costs.
What’s more, as EV technology
becomes more prevalent,
R&D costs will be more evenly
spread across manufacturer
fleets, so the cost of EVs will
come down – the new Nissan
Leaf starts at £1,500 less than
the old one.
3. They’re more likely to catch
fire in a crash
Many people have concerns
about crash safety with electric
cars. It was largely driven by
a couple of high-profile Tesla
Model S fires in 2013. The
EV maker upgraded its
underbody battery pack
protection in 2014 but also
noted that the odds of fires
in its cars were “five times
lower than those of an
average gasoline car”.
4. You can’t drive them in
car washes or when it’s
raining
We all know water and
electricity don’t mix. That’s
why manufacturers are
really careful to seal all of
the electrified components
to make sure there aren’t
any problems when
driving through puddles or
charging in the rain.
And if you couldn’t even
wash your car there would
be a lot more dirty EVs on
the road than there are!
5. You can’t go very far
That may have been the
case a few years ago, but
now most electric vehicles
have a range in excess of
150 miles, with 200 miles
quickly becoming the norm.
With the average journey
less than nine miles, that’s
more than enough for most
trips.
6. There’s nowhere to
charge them
Fear of running out of
electricity is known as
‘range anxiety’. Long trips
do require a bit more
planning as you can’t rely
80 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!

on charging points cropping
up as regularly as fuel stations,
but charge point locator
Zap Map indicates there are
almost 15,000 connectors at
more than 5,000 locations in
the UK, with more added all
the time.
And charging doesn’t take
as long as you might think,
either. Rapid chargers can
provide 80 per cent of charge
in about 30 minutes.
7. The batteries don’t last very
long
While it’s true that batteries
have a finite life, most
manufacturers allow you
to lease the battery for a
monthly fee and will replace it
for free when needed. Others
offer warranties to cover any
unexpected replacements,
with five- to eight-year cover
the norm.
8. EVs are less environmentally
friendly across their life cycle
It’s true that the high
energy required to build an
electric car can make it less
environmentally friendly to
produce than a traditionally
fuelled car. However, once on
the road, a Norwegian study
quoted by the BBC estimates
an EV is about 10 per cent
better over its life cycle – and
as the UK turns more towards
eco-friendly energy production
for the grid, that’ll continue to
improve.
9. Battery disposal poses a
huge environmental issue
Currently, it is estimated that
just five per cent of lithiumion
batteries in the EU are
recycled, with most hidden in
consumer electronics. The EV
boom has encouraged lateral
thinking, with companies
taking used EV batteries for
use elsewhere, such as home
energy storage.
10. They’re boring to drive
If the thought of an electric
vehicle conjures up images
of a milk float and mobility
scooter, you need to get with
the times! Modern electric
cars can be genuinely fun to
drive, particularly thanks to
the high-torque motors, which
make acceleration brisk.
Tesla takes this to extremes
with its Model S, which can
go from 0-60mph in less than
three seconds – that puts it on
a par with the new McLaren
Senna supercar, with its
petrol-powered twin-turbo V8.
Banwood Folk Dance Club's 90th birthday.
Not many dance clubs can claim to have begun life
in a field, but that is just what Banwood did.
In 1928 a group of friends, led by Spencer Ranger,
began learning traditional folk dances in a meadow
in Woodmansterne Lane, dancing to a “wind-up”
gramophone.
Ninety years later, Banwood Folk Dance Club is still
going strong – but these days members dance in the
comfort of a church hall.
To celebrate the anniversary, Banwood is planning
a number of special dances this year. The first one
was on Wednesday 25 April, when guest caller Ivan
Aitken called the steps to music played by two-piece
group Jip.
The dance was held at the Club’s regular meeting
place, St Ann’s Church Hall in Brighton Road,
Banstead. There were drinks and nibbles in the
break and a birthday cake to help celebrate.
About 50 members and guests enjoyed the evening.
As well as the green roots of the club, Banwood
also has an unusual name, formed from two distinct
groups. Banstead Country Dance Club is the older
branch, started even before the English Folk Dance
and Song Society was set up (from two separate
groups). Spencer Ranger was a friend of Cecil Sharp
who led the revival of traditional music and dancing
in the 1920s.
Iconic Routes:
The North Coast 500
Italy has the St Bernard Pass (made famous in the
opening scene of ‘The Italian Job’). America has
Route 66 of course. And Scotland? Well, that has the
North Coast 500.
Winding for 16 miles over the 500 that gives the
route its name, it was the 2015 brainchild of the
North Highland Initiative to create a tourist driving
loop around the uppermost part of mainland
Scotland.
And it’s on my bucket list to drive this year.
Driven clockwise, or anti, the accepted start/
end-point is Inverness, a beautiful city and worth
exploring before the drive.
From there you take the A862 to Mull of Ord, before
choosing clockwise and westward on the A832 to
Applecross, or taking the A9 northbound to John
O‘Groats if you prefer the opposite way.
Woodmansterne Folk Dance Club was set up about
1960 after the success of a series of six folk dance
lessons organised by St Peter’s Parish Fellowship.
A Mrs Gilford called the dances while her husband
played the tunes on his accordion.
In the late 1970s both clubs were suffering from
low membership and decided to join forces in 1979,
becoming Banwood Folk Dance Club.
Today, with a variety of guest callers and dance
styles, and a mix of live and recorded music, the
emphasis is still on enjoying folk dancing. Beginners
as well as experienced dancers are always welcome
to the Wednesday meetings at 8pm and the first visit
is free
Either way, you will travel through some of the
most stunning scenery the UK has to offer: in the
southern section, looping roads with near-vertical
mountains on either side, and surprisingly flat,
almost East-Anglian pasture-like highways in the
north around Thurso. And the beaches up there are
something to behold too.
How long it takes is up to you (cyclists have ridden
it in 31 hours!) but speed is not the point: it’s the
journey that matters.
Just writing about it makes me want to jump in the
car and drive the ‘500 right now!
The only detrimental thing I can see is its increasing
popularity. We go to the Highlands to get away from
it all, yet it could be a victim of its own success and
turn into Scotland’s M25.
So, let’s keep its secret to ourselves, eh?
Coulsdon Probus – 2nd in the world – 50th Year Anniversary 2018
Friday 11th May saw the culmination of a year’s
planning as Coulsdon Probus held its 50th Year
Anniversary Celebration Dinner at the Coulsdon Manor
Hotel. 93 guests arrived to reception drinks and a
chance to mingle and perhaps have a few words with
the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Toni Letts OBE and
her Consort Mr Max Menon. Ceremonial chains were
everywhere – the Mayor, her Consort, the Chairman
of Coulsdon Probus and chairmen of other Probuses
there to celebrate the event: Caterham (the first
Probus in the world – Coulsdon is the second),
Sanderstead & Riddlesdown, Tandridge, Sanderstead
& Purley Oaks, Warlingham & District. Top table guests
were The Worshipful the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor
Toni Letts OBE and her Consort Mr Max Menon,
Mr Eric Jenkinson CVO, OBE (former High
Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago) and his wife
Máire, former Councillor Chris Wright (Croydon
Councillor for Coulsdon East for 28 years) and his wife
Marlene, Mr Ian Payne, Chairman of Coulsdon Probus
and his wife Pauline. A welcome from the Chairman
was followed by a superb diner then entertainment
God’s Omnipresence
CR5 Land Quiz
“Where shall I go from Your Spirit? Or where
can I flee from Your presence?” Psalm 139:7 (NKJV)
Have you ever wondered how God can know
everything about every person on planet earth?
Not to mention also what’s happening in every
galaxy in the vast universe? I for one, have often had
these thoughts and marvelled at the omnipresence
of our all-powerful God.
Interestingly, today we have a new generation of
super-computers used by governments and big
corporations. They are so powerful that they can
perform trillions of calculations per second! China
presently possesses the world’s most powerful
super-computer which is capable of performing -
wait for it - 93,000 trillion calculations a second!!
When I recently read this online statistic, it made me
think that if humans can design and build super-computers
that can perform such enormous calculations
per second, what can Almighty God not do with his
super-powered, unlimited mind?
In other words, as the gospel writer, Luke, tells us -
with God nothing is impossible (Luke 1:37).
The Old Testament gives us a classic example of
someone who thought he could run away and hide
from God. His name was Jonah. God gave him the
unique assignment to go to an enemy country
(Assyria), and warn the people that if they didn’t
repent of their wicked ways, God would destroy
Answers on page 88 - no peeking
them within two months (Jonah 1:1-3). Jonah, not
willing to follow God’s command, boarded a ship
which was headed for another country. Disaster
struck en route and Jonah was tossed overboard and
swallowed by a great fish which God, miraculously,
organised. God had stopped Jonah in his tracks.
After the fish vomited him up on the shore, God
once again told Jonah to go to Ninevah, which
he reluctantly did, and the people repented at his
preaching.
This ancient story which has been preserved for us
today, is a poignant reminder to all of us that God
is ever-present throughout his marvellous creation.
Instead of us attempting to run away from God, his
great desire is that we run to him. He wants us to be
his friend, and he has much to share with us in this
mortal life and on into eternity (1 Corinthians 2:9-10).
Prayer: Father in heaven, thank you for giving us
knowledge of your existence. You are all-powerful
and all-present throughout your vast universe, and
we are grateful that you are only a prayer away from
each one of us. Thank you for your Holy Spirit, who
enables us to build a close relationship with you. In
Jesus’ name. Amen.
Joan says "I’ve set myself a
Although the kestrel was one of
a few shots to capture him at just
Bird’s Eye View
By John Birkett, RSPB Croydon Local Group
I have just completed a day birdwatching at
many sites in Croydon and it is time to take
stock of changes in Croydon’s bird life over
recent years. Some species now have just a
tenuous claw hold with only a couple of Yellowhammers
left at Riddlesdown and a single pair
of Reed Buntings at South Norwood CP. And
it is becoming harder to find House Martins
and Swifts around our houses. On the plus side
Little Egrets are becoming more common and
Egyptian Geese are now breeding. Buzzards
and Red Kites are likely to colonise soon.
But, before anyone links their increase to
declines in small birds, it should be
remembered that these neither of these
species usually prey on song birds. In fact
some small birds are increasing; Goldfinches
are far more common than they were 20 years
ago and Whitethroats are thriving at South
Norwood CP.
You can help us to monitor Croydon’s birds by
taking part in our bird survey, recording the
birds in and around your garden each month,
or you can send us details of anything
interesting that you see. If you find any House
Martins nesting in eaves (or anywhere else) we
would love to hear about them. Likewise if you
see and hear Swifts screaming around the
rooftops or diving behind the gutters (this
would suggest they have a nest in the roof).
You can find out more about the RSPB Croydon
Local Group and the survey by coming along to
one of our meetings or going to the website:
http://ww2.rspb.org.uk/groups/croydon/
To find out more about some of the birds seen
in Croydon have a look at the Croydon Birders
website - http://croydon-birders.wikia.com/
Sunday 17th June 2018
The average Dad in Britain spends an average of 4 hours a day being a taxi, 27 days a
year on DIY duties, and if you were to put a price on the number of spiders cleared–
it’d be at least £10,000.
Dad’s are great for all kinds of things; opening that jar of Nutella for your morning
spread, reaching the last box of Frosties on the supermarket shelf, piggy backs when
your little legs just couldn't take it anymore, reading bed time stories, playng in the
park and so much more!
Fathers day is the day to show your appreciation for your life long heroes; no matter
what age you are or how old your precious father is!
Whether that be through gifts, cards, dinner or simply a loving hug and a cup of tea.
We’ve only got one dad so let him know he’s the best!
If money is tight, a handmade card or a surprise telephone call would mean the
world to your Dad
