a GPA; instead, WPI defines
the dean’s list by the
New Trier student
entrepreneurs win big at
business competition
New Trier High School
sophomores Camille Scrine,
Cole Jiaras and Lauren
$11,000 to make their small
business dreams a reality
after placing as first runners-up
business pitch competition
for high school students at
the Indiana IoT Lab.
The entrepreneurship
students and fellow team
member Ethan Lestrud
created “Spark,” a mobile
app that will allow homeowners
to sell parking
spaces for one-time events
on their driveway or in
their garage. They came
up with the idea after discussing
parking demand at
New Trier events, but the
THE GLENVIEW LANTERN
West Nile virus-positive
mosquitoes found in
Glenview
Two batches of mosquitoes
collected on May 25
from traps in Glenview
and Morton Grove tested
positive for West Nile virus.
According to the North
Shore Mosquito Abatement
District, which conducted
the tests, they were
lb.
lb.
the first West Nile viruspositive
mosquitoes found
in the district this year.
2017 saw four human
cases in the district — two
in Evanston, one in Glencoe
and one in Glenview
— and at least 80 in Illinois,
with the majority appearing
in the Chicagoland
area.
While the risk of being
infected with West Nile
virus is low at this time of
year, the District recommends
that residents take
personal protection measures
to minimize mosquito
bites, including using
insect repellent, wearing
loose fitting clothing, and
avoiding peak mosquito
feeding times during the
hours around dawn and
dusk.
Residents are urged to
examine their property
and eliminate any items
that can hold water, particularly
smaller items that
may be easily overlooked.
Mosquitoes can breed in
anything that holds water.
“West Nile is endemic
to the area, so we have it
every year. It’s just a matter
of to what degree,”
said Communications
Manager Dave Zazra.
“It’s also one of the mosquito
viruses that can kill.
... If you’re lucky, there’s
fever and aches and things
like that, but if it’s neuroinvasive,
that’s where
things get very scary.”
THE GLENCOE ANCHOR
Glencoe Roast to rebrand
under new ownership
For more than nine
years, Yolanda Kowalski
ran Glencoe Roast with the
help of her son, Kevin.
Preparing for retirement
in mid-June, Kowalski sold
the coffee shop last month
to Glencoe residents Lou
and Julie Rubin. Kowalski
stayed on the team to help
through the transition at
700 Vernon Ave.
“It’s a company she’s
owned for nine years, and
she’s worked hard, she’s
done it all on her own and
it’s not easy,” Lou Rubin
said. “I have a lot of respect
for what she’s done there,
and she’s been exceptional
with this handoff.”
The Rubins plan to
make some changes this
summer. They will close
Glencoe Roast sometime
at the end of June or the
beginning of July for a remodel.
Then, they will reopen
the shop with a new
name, Hometown Coffee
and Juice Co., and a new
concept.
“It’s still going to have a
coffee house-feel but we’re
going to redesign it (and)
we’re going to rename it,”
Lou Rubin said. “It’s going
to have a lighter, brighter
feel in there. We’re going
to try to get the windows to
open in the front.”
So far, the only change
they’ve made so far is to
the brand of coffee. Kowalski
served Intelligentsia
coffee, but under the Rubins,
Glencoe Roast now
serves La Colombe.
After the reopening
later this summer, another
change customers will see
is the addition of food selections
and drinks, like
avocado toast, egg sandwiches,
bowls, smoothies
and juices. The menu
will be limited, Lou Rubin
said, but they’ll offer a bigger
selection to add more
food options in downtown
Glencoe.
