When Wayne Poon heard his friend was going to retire and close Northtown Mandar Inn, he jumped on the opportunity to turn the restaurant into something new. Happy with the space and location, Poon kept just about everything the same, but came up with a new concept for the restaurant at 2659 Shermer Road, Northbrook. A native of Hong Kong with a love for Asian food, Poon decided to switch things up from a Chinese restaurant and turn it into a Japanese and ramen restaurant. “I like Japanese food more and wanted to bring it into the restaurant,” Poon said. Soon after the closing of Northtown Mandar Inn, Ronin’s Spoon opened in May of 2016. Poon says business has been good in the first year and hopes to continue its success in its second year. Part of the success comes from experienced and friendly staff members. Grace Avila, of Glenview, is waitress/hostess at Ronin’s, but was also on staff at Northtown Mandar Inn before it closed. Avila knows the ins and outs of the menu and is there to offer her knowledge to new customers. She said many people do not understand what good ramen is and instead expect bland, packaged ramen. But, Ronin’s offers authentic ramen with a lot of ingredients and flavor. A group of 22nd Century Media editors decided to stop by the restaurant to give the ramen — and its other offerings — a try, and we may just be hooked on it. For Poon, one of the most important things is offering fresh ingredients. Poon said the restaurant receives daily deliveries to offer some of the highest quality dishes, at an affordable price. We could not wait to see what all the craze was about, and started off with two signature ramen dishes at Ronin’s. First up was the karaage chicken ramen ($12.60), made with tonkotsu pork broth, boneless chicken thigh, poached egg, nori, narutomaki, lotus root, bamboo shoots, wood ear mushrooms and scallions. All of the ingredients in the ramen blended together to create an abundance of flavors, and the chicken was nice and tender. We couldn’t stop at just one ramen bowl, so we also tried the chasshu ramen ($12.80), made with tonkotsu pork broth, chasshu pork, poached egg, nori, narutomaki, lotus root bamboo shoots, wood ear mushrooms and scallions. This dish had many of the same flavors as the karaage chicken ramen, but Avila said this one is more of a traditional ramen dish. Since opening a year ago, Poon has added more appetizers to the menu. This dish was a nice twist on tofu adding a bit more texture, flavor and crunch. We also tried the nasuagebitashi ($7), which is an appetizer of eggplant topped with ginger and soy sauce. Another popular appetizer at Ronin’s is the soft shell crab tempura ($13). Finally, we tried the edamame ($6), which is salted soybean pods with garlic and pepper. The seasoned edamame were a nice change of pace from typical edamame. For anyone not familiar with ramen or Japanese food, Avila said coming to the restaurant is an experience in and of itself. “We try to get the authentic flavors in each dish,” Avila said. “It is more of an experience than going to a normal restaurant. It is more interesting and you can have more fun with it.
