wilmettebeacon.com LIFE & ARTS the wilmette beacon | June 7, 2018 | 31 Radio personality Showbiz Shelly got her start at New Trier Now hosts Kiss FM midday show Megan Bernard, Editor When Shelly Menaker didn’t make New Trier High School’s volleyball team, it led her down a path she was destined for. “I started playing volleyball in junior high and wanted to pursue it in high school,” said Menaker, who grew up in Wilmette. “It was pretty time-consuming. So, when I didn’t make the volleyball team, I had more time and I knew I loved the media.” Menaker got involved with the school’s radio station, WNTH, where eventually she had a show and became the program director. Fast-forward 15-plus years later. Menaker, now a host and entertainment reporter on Chicago radio station Kiss FM, said, “Things worked out quite nicely.” “I would watch TRL (Total Request Live) every day after school and that’s how I fell in love with [media],” said Menaker, who goes by Showbiz Shelly on air. “When I watched the show, I would always say that I’d love to interview these guys. Then when I moved forward, I always had it in the back of mind that that’s what I’d end up doing.” At WNTH, Menaker would bring her favorite CDs to play over the North Shore airwaves and even hosted a pop culture quiz. “At the time, I didn’t realize how lucky we were,” she said. “Now, I’ve realized it’s really a unique thing (to have a high school radio station).” Menaker graduated from New Trier in 2003 and went on to nearby Northwestern University to pursue a degree in media — specifically, television — at Medill School of Journalism. During her sophomore year, she got an internship with Chicago’s B96 in the promotions department. Since she had previous radio experience from New Trier, B96 soon offered her a internship spot on the night show with Doug Bobrowski and Justin Roman (Stylz and Roman). She accepted the position and, for a year and a half, Menaker would go to class during the day and be on-air at night. Menaker received a great response from B96 listeners, so Stylz and Roman added a weekly segment for her called, “Shelly’s Street Talk.” When Menaker was a college junior, she was asked to join B96’s morning show — an equally “exciting and terrifying” career move for her. “The show that was on at that time, Eddie and JoBo, I listened to them growing up,” she said. “But I learned so much from them. I have a lot of fun memories.” Menaker remained on B96’s morning show for 13 years until early April, when radio personality Kevin “DreX” Buchar replaced her and Jamar “J Niice” McNeil on “The J Show.” Buchar, according to media journalist Robert Feder, hosted mornings for eight years on Kiss FM. In 2010, he left to briefly host evenings in San Francisco. After several weeks of silence, Menaker announced in late April she’d be hosting her own twohour midday show and contribute to the morning show with Christopher “Fred” Frederick and Angi Taylor on Kiss FM. “The response I’ve gotten has been overwhelmingly positive,” Menaker said of the job change. “It’s amazing to see how excited people are for me. Being on the radio for so long, I’ve formed a special bond with my listeners.” Menaker “loves” the new adventure and has been embracing the different dynamic of hosting her own show, she said. “It’s totally different having your own show than working with a group of people,” she added. “[I’ve had] a lot of help with people in the programming department. I’m learning the technical stuff too, like running the board for my shift.” The best part? She’s still doing what she loves — reporting on pop culture from her hometown market. In a childhood journal, then 13-year-old Menaker wrote about how great it would be to interview groups like the Backstreet Boys. Weeks ago, she interviewed them for her “second or third time.” “It’s my favorite part, interviewing celebrities,” Menaker said. “We put these people on pedestals. I love to get deeper and figure out what makes these people tick. It’s exciting to be part of that small world of knowing exactly what’s happening in the world,” she said. “Being at the Grammys or like ‘American Idol,’ you are part of something that everyone’s talking about the next day.” Menaker credits her radio success back to her start at New Trier and years of hard work. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and work hard,” Menaker said. “You do have to put in the work. At first, you don’t see the results you want, but you’ll get there eventually.” Menaker’s family still resides in Wilmette.
