I’m sure that now the warmer weather has set in we’ve all already

Everyone loves the Beano and for its 80th birthday we’ve teamed up with Mischief 

Makers - Dennis, JJ, Gnasher, Rubi and Pieface – to bring you this year’s Tesco Bank 

Summer Reading Challenge. 

Take part in this year’s challenge and follow clues to explore Beanotown. Collect special 

stickers along the way and try to find the mysterious buried treasure.

plastic 

On 18 April pupils from Sunnyside 

Primary School promoted their 

#NaeStrawAtAw campaign in the 

Grand Central Hotel for the 2018 Best 

Bar None Glasgow awards. The pupils, 

known as the Ocean Defenders, campaign 

for the end of single-use plastic, and 

have already shown great initiative in 

convincing Glasgow City Council, and 

organisations such as Calmac ferries, to 

stop using plastic straws and opt for more 

environmentally-friendly alternatives. 

For the first time, the Best Bar None 

Glasgow awards incorporated the Ocean 

Defenders’ campaign into their judging, 

and extra credits were awarded to pubs, 

clubs, hotels, and specialist venues that 

could prove that they had made positive 

changes to reduce their single-use plastic. 

Eleanor Lee of Community Safety 

Glasgow said: ‘we are absolutely 

delighted to support Sunnyside Primary’s 

#NaeStrawAtAw campaign and have the 

pupils attend the launch. They are very 

impressive speakers and knowledgeable 

about the harm done by plastic pollution. 

I’m sure 

they will help convince even more of the 

licensees to further reduce their use of 

plastic’. 

As a historic hub of learning and leisure, New Lanark World 

Heritage Site is delighted to be hosting the V&A Museum 

of Childhood’s touring exhibition GAME PLAN: Board Games 

Rediscovered, in their newly developed Mill Gallery this 

summer from 20th July – 4th November. 

GAME PLAN celebrates the joy, excitement and occasional 

frustration of playing board games. This exhibition will include some of the most iconic, 

enthralling and visually striking games from the V&A’s outstanding national collection 

of board games. Visitors can enjoy hands-on interactives and see more than 100 objects, 

featuring games from around the world, and explores the important role of design. 

Throughout the exhibition, selected games of special interest are highlighted with more 

detailed information on their history and influence. 

Alongside the exhibition, visitors will also have the chance to enjoy Challenge Games, 

a themed Trail and Historic Toy sessions. New Lanark will also be running a programme 

of inclusive sessions with ‘Autism Friendly’ mornings and dementia friendly ‘Games We 

Played’ Reminiscence sessions. 

GAME PLAN: Board Games Rediscovered will be open daily at New Lanark from 20th 

July – 4th November 2018. Visitors can enjoy the exhibition as part of a family day out 

to New Lanark. Individuals, educational groups and organised groups of all sizes are 

welcome to visit.

Children’s Hearing?’ exhibition 

In the Year of Young 

People 2018 the Scottish 

Children’s Reporter 

Administration are 

putting together an 

exhibition of photographs 

which show what children 

think about children’s hearings. They aim 

to exhibit the photographs from children 

and young people for members of the 

Scottish Parliament. Entries are open 

until 30 October 2018, so get creative! 

Colour or black and white, buildings or 

landscapes which capture emotions, a 

picture of what the children’s hearing is, 

or what it can do – it’s up to you! The only 

Lord Provost’s poetry prize 

winner announced 

The winner of the Lord Provost poetry 

competition was announced in April; 12 year-old 

Oliwia Szymkiewicz from Bankhead Primary 

School was awarded the trophy for her poem 

‘When I think’. 

Lord Provost Eva Bolander and Glasgow’s Poet 

Laureate, Jim Carruth, presented Oliwia with her 

award at the City Chambers. 

The competition runs every year with a different 

theme, this year’s being 

limit is that photographs which identify 

individual children or adults cannot be 

accepted; however, drawings, 

sculptures, or other art forms 

depicting individuals are allowed. 

Ensure that any people in your 

artwork are unrecognisable, and 

don’t take photographs if you 

are at a child’s hearing.

title of your photograph, 250 words 

explaining your photograph, your 

name, age, and contact details to:
