1 ST ANNUAL SYTTENDE MAI CELEBRATION—A SUCCESS!
Nordic Northwest partnered with Broder Söder to put on a Norwegian
influenced picnic style dinner in honor of the 17 TH of May, Norwegian
Indepedence Day! Before a musical performance on piano, we served pølse
med lompe, shrimp salad, cheeseboards and aquavit. It was a geat evening
and we hope to host more collaborative dinner and event pairings soon!
Did you know? June is full of Nordic independence! Denmark marks theirs on
June 5 TH , Sweden on June 6 TH , and Iceland on the 17 TH ! In Denmark, although
they do have Constitution Day off from work, you are more likely to find a
political speech than a parade, and most Danes simply enjoy the weather
on lawns drinking beer. The Swedes are often on holiday during their "Flag
Day" but acknowledge their history with food and friends. Iceland’s national
day was selected because it's the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson, a champion
to the nationalist cause now commemorated through parades, theater and
dancing. Keep an eye on our schedule to make the most out of summer with
Broder and Nordic Northwest, including news on a summer dinner series! •
NEW TO OUR TEAM!
This spring we welcomed a new member of our
team, Kirstie Opel! Kirstie moved down to the
Portland area from Washington last summer after
attending Evergreen State College and studying
theater. Her heritage is Finnish, on her mom’s side,
and she is ready to embrace all things Nordic. Stop
by the front desk and introduce yourself (fun fact:
she likes baseball)! •
