HUNTERS HILL poker machine magnate Len Ainsworth AM has described
his Queens Birthday Award as simply a case of sharing his
luck with others.
Ninety five year old Mr
Ainsworth was recognised
with an AM for significant
service to business
and manufacturing
as well as to the community
through philanthropic
contributions.
The founder of the
world famous Aristocrat
poker machines in 1953,
Mr Ainsworth has donated
millions to charity and
has inspired generations
of Australian exporters.
“I’ve been very fortunate
in life, very lucky
with more than 1,500
great people working for
me.”
Much of Mr Ainsworth’s
contributions have been
in the medical profession
and his support for
Sydney Children’s Hospital
saw it name the new
Ainsworth Building after
him in 2013.
“I’ve got my name on a
lot of buildings in a lot of
places because they ask
me if there is anything
they can ever do to thank
me, so I just say, I don’t
know .. name a building
after me or something.
“I think anyone with
seven sons would be
fond of children and appreciate
the work of the
Childrens Hospital.”
Mr Ainsworth built his
career on his father’s
work as a dentist making
dental equipment and his
first poker machine was
an iconic two up machine
he created in the 1950s
called Two Up.
“My father always complained
I turned his hobby
into a successful business
and we were quite
successful in the export
market,” he said.
“I’ve always been a
successful exporter and
if you have a product
worth exporting you can
make a lot more than you
can in Australia, but no
one lays out a red carpet
for you overseas if you’re
a competitor.”
The Ainsworth family is
one of Britain’s first exports
to Hunters Hill.
“The orginal Ainsworth
came here in 1831 and
two of his houses are still
standing, his father was
a saddler in Birmingham
and he came here with
a bit of money behind
him.”
Mr Ainsworth said he
has made Hunters Hill
his home because of “the
peace and quiet here”
but also appreciates the
heritage municipality’s
close association with
the art scene.
“We are heavily involved
in art and with
poker machines you
would be surprised at the
number of artists we employ,
it is a huge industry
and Sydney and Nevada
and among the few places
where they make machines.”
His advice to exporters
is to be “brave and dedicated”
and he believes
that if you have good
fortune in life, you should
share it.
