6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 13 June, 2018 Racism is based on ignorance Dear Sir, Carole Clark’s letter of last week and Tony Ikonomou’s serial instalments, reinforces my view that most racism and bigotry is based on ignorance. Ignorance of the facts, ignorance of history, ignorance of the definition of those words and an absolute ignorance of the damage and hurt that stems from their letters. And don’t get me wrong - everyone is entitled to hold their views and their opinions. The problem occurs when those views are articulated in a public forum and are not based on anything other than their own prejudices. I take great umbrage with both Ms Clark and Mr Ikonomou as they simply don›t, or are unwilling to believe that a conversation with an Uber driver or the viewing of several episodes of Border Security, in Ms Clark›s case, is not evidence to support a racist or bigoted position. Of course if you are constantly looking for examples of wrong doing then they will always be there. Ms Clark, like Mr Ikonomou, doesn›t understand that claiming a whole ethnic group, or people of a specific nationality, cannot be stereotyped and is in itself, xenophobic. In the end your opinions reflect poorly on both of you as any reader with clarity of mind and a kind and open heart will know. MARK NEWMAN Hunter’s Hill Praise for Hunters Hill Hospital rehab Dear Sir, As the saying goes, “what you don’t know won’t hurt you”! Of course there must be many exceptions, and in my experience, one is the wonderful Hunters Hill Hospital Rehabilitation Centre, whom my previous knowledge of it’s existence was zilch. HUNTER’S HILL COUNCIL NOTICE OF PUBLIC EXHIBITION DRAFT COMMUNITY STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2028 (Including the Delivery Program & Operational Plan) DRAFT BUDGET, FEES & CHARGES 2018/19 – 2027/28 The Local Government Act 1993 Sections 402 and 405 provide that a council must complete a review of its Community Strategic Plan, Delivery Program and Operational Plan by 30 June in the year following the local government elections and its Budget and Fees & Charges on an annual basis. The suite of plans must be placed on public exhibition for a period of 28 days and comments from the community considered prior to final endorsement by the Council. The Draft Community Strategic Plan (10 year plan) gives both Council and the community a vision for the main priorities and aspirations for the future of the Hunters Hill local government area. This plan also includes: • Draft Delivery Program (4 year program) outlines what Council intends to do towards achieving the main priorities during its term of office. • Draft Operational Plan (one year plan) sets out the individual projects and activities that will be undertaken each year to achieve the commitments made in other supporting documents. The Draft Budget, Fees & Charges describes the Council operations and asset maintenance programs for the next ten years. The Budget also contains proposed Rates and Charges for the 2018/19 financial year. The draft budget includes a proposed increase of 2.3% in ordinary and special rates, which is the maximum allowable rate pegging limit announced by the Minister for Local Government. All interested parties are invited to view copies of the documents and provide feedback to Council. Knee replacement surgery these days is common place but nevertheless an operation and rehabilitation process not for the faint hearted. Hospitals are funny places - most people don›t give them a second thought, until you need one ie Hunters Hill. They function 24/7 and most tasks within seem to rely on team work and quite often, folk from a mix of differing countries of origin. What is evident is a shared work ethic and mutual respect - something for governments to think about. I have now completed a six week rehab stint at Hunters Hill under professional supervision. Many thanks go to my physio Janet who provided our session with great encouragement and expertise and for me, included such basics as «how to walk again». This is an onerous and demanding essential function - particularly coping with customers like myself who on some days had second thoughts about participation. For mine, I must thank my drivers Angela and Jacqui. Well, “what you don›t know won’t hurt you”! I wonder how much more “won’t hurt you” exists out there? - I suspect heaps and heaps! Nevertheless, I also wonder if knee replacement surgery were to occur on a broader scale, it might make us a little more compassionate citizens ha! As they didn’t leave their name, I couldn’t thank them in person. It is really nice to know that there are some honest people in Ryde. Whoever you are I thank you from the bottom of my heart. As I am an aged pensioner the loss of my wallet was devasting. Take care and thank you again. Right next to Dan Murphy’s. We started our company making furniture mostly out of recycled hardwoods that were from old Sydney fences and structural hardwood beams from knockdown building sites. We also have a very experienced furniture sprayer who can create colours and finishes that can match a client’s existing furniture. I get asked a lot about what colour table will go with my floor. My answer is this: “you can contrast or compliment your floor.” I also suggest that if you have a lot of wood happening in your house, a rug and leather or metal chairs will break up all the timber with a different textures. We sell a variety of quality leather dining chairs made overseas. We searched the world for them and are delighted to have them available to our customers. We sell them at wholesale prices direct to the public. I also lend chairs to people can take them home and see what they look like in their house before they buy a whole set. This helps people who are just a little uncertain that the colour of the chair is going to work or not. * * * MOST recently we have been making furniture from old steel and wrought iron that we find around Sydney. Old sewing machine bases are our favourite! Not just Singer but other international brands that no one would have heard of. Many customers come in and tell me that their mother used to make their clothes on an old Singer or equivalent. These metal bases make such lovely side tables with interesting timber tops. Once a year we have a June stock take sale on furniture that we just want to move. Some pieces are up to 50 per cent off. Also some of our discontinued leather chairs are 40 per cent off too. Community feedback will help Council develop this Management Plan. Council is seeking community views on both the impacts of the flying-fox camp and the outcomes people hope management of the flying-fox camp will achieve. Extensive consultation is planned and there are a number of ways for residents, park users and stakeholders to become involved in the development of the Plan. If you are interested in the future of the Tarban Creek Grey-headed Flying-fox colony, please get involved and complete the online survey at www. huntershill.nsw.gov.au/flyingfox * * * LOT size, floor space, landscaped area, setback controls and storey controls determine the local character of an area and the recent changes to the state-wide Low-Rise Medium Density Housing Code simply cannot address all the permutations of individual area controls. The impact on local character will be significant and Council has written to the Minister for Planning Anthony Roberts advising that it is concerned about the expanded enforcement duties that all councils will be expected to undertake and the lack of consultation/education surrounding this change and requested that Council seek an ongoing exemption from the Code.

Seniors Making a Difference ON Wednesday May 30, the Eastwood Chinese Seniors Citizens Club (ECSCC) staged a Cantonese Opera Concert as part of their creative activities and also as a fundraiser for the renovation of the St Philips Anglican Church hall, Eastwood, where the club meets weekly on Wednesdays between 10.30am to 12 noon. It was a pleasant surprise to see the hall filling up with as many as 180 mostly senior citizens, their excitement palpable. As an opera-lover, any opportunity to watch this sublime, ancient Chinese musical theatre and art form - be it in Cantonese, Teochew or Kunqu - is a rare treat. And the amateur performers did not disappoint. Revenue NSW data reveals the City of Ryde took $3, 168, 178 in fines, which is slightly less than Canada Bay with $3,435,443 and significantly lower than the City of Parramatta with $6,644,545 and the Inner West West Council with a staggering $9,995,521. Hunters Hill Council was way behind with just $180, 521 in fines while Lane Cove netted $1,310,592 just behind Hornsby with $1,479, 386. No Sydney council came close to the City of Sydney, which amassed almost a quarter-of-a-million dollars in fines. The figures exclude millions dropped into parking meters, which netted the City of Sydney another $36.8 million . Amazingly the tiny Eastern Suburbs hamlet of Woollahra netted $5,087,352, a record for a council that faced a forced amalgamation because of a low revenue base. Parking fines have been an issue in the City of Ryde where rangers have reported threats of violence for issuing parking tickets which has prompted the council to invest money in security device protection for rangers.
