COMMUNITY
INFORMATION
SESSIONS
St Joseph’s College is in the early planning stages for
a new purpose-built sports courts complex to meet the
College’s need for sufficient all-weather practical teaching
and sporting facilities.
Physical education and sport play
a central role in the cognitive,
social, emotional, physical and
spiritual development of students.
Our ambition is that St Joseph’s
College Physical Education and
Sports Precinct will deliver
state-of-the-art facilities and
provide a new heart and hub
for the teaching and learning
of the Personal Development,
Health and Physical Education
curriculum and our co-curricular
sports program.
Seniors Making a Difference
ON Wednesday May 30, the Eastwood Chinese Seniors Citizens Club (ECSCC) staged a Cantonese Opera Concert as
part of their creative activities and also as a fundraiser for the renovation of the St Philips Anglican Church hall, Eastwood,
where the club meets weekly on Wednesdays between 10.30am to 12 noon.
It was a pleasant
surprise to see the hall
filling up with as many
as 180 mostly senior
citizens, their excitement
palpable.
As an opera-lover,
any opportunity to
watch this sublime,
ancient Chinese musical
theatre and art
form - be it in Cantonese,
Teochew or Kunqu
- is a rare treat.
And the amateur
performers did not
disappoint. Despite
the demand of each
act - all well-known
Chinese theatrical
dramas - lasting no
less than 20 minutes,
most of these senior
performers sang with
little prompting, some
totally in-voice and incharacter.
The gratification
on their faces at the
pleasure that they had
brought to the audience
said it all.
While Mayor Jerome
Laxale availed himself
to open the concert
as an event that “enhances
cultural diversity”,
Councillor Simon
Zhou and Chairman
Hugh Lee led the
Ryde pockets
millions in fines
The City of Ryde has pocketed more than
three million dollars in parking fines in the
last 12 months.
Revenue NSW data
reveals the City of Ryde
took $3, 168, 178 in
fines, which is slightly
less than Canada Bay
with $3,435,443 and
significantly lower than
the City of Parramatta
with $6,644,545 and the
Inner West West Council
with a staggering
$9,995,521.
Hunters Hill Council
was way behind with
just $180, 521 in fines
while Lane Cove netted
$1,310,592 just behind
Hornsby with $1,479,
386.
No Sydney council
came close to the
City of Sydney, which
amassed almost a
quarter-of-a-million
dollars in fines.
The figures exclude
millions dropped into
parking meters, which
netted the City of Sydney
another $36.8 million
.
Amazingly the tiny
Eastern Suburbs hamlet
of Woollahra netted
$5,087,352, a record
for a council that faced
a forced amalgamation
because of a low revenue
base.
Parking fines have
been an issue in the
City of Ryde where
rangers have reported
threats of violence for
issuing parking tickets
which has prompted the
council to invest money
in security device protection
for rangers.
The NRMA said parking
fine revenue is increasing
every year and
it argues that any council
that pockets more
than $1 million in fines
should set up a community
panel for people
to contest their fines.
troupe with a hearty
rendition of ‘Friends’ to
close the event, which
raised $500, on top of
the $1000 from the EC-
SCC coffer, towards the
renovation.
As I left the still
crowded concert hall
into the wintry chill, my
heart sang in rhythm
with these senior folks,
who actively engage in
a life filled with healthy,
Where every family is special
creative pursuits ranging
from music, tai-chi,
volunteering, to networking
and out-oftown
trips. In the process,
they are helping
to make a difference for
themselves and others.
Forthcoming events of
the ECSCC include:
June 13 from 10.30
am – celebrating Chinese
Dumpling (Dragon
Boat) Festival; Saturday
July 28 from 8am
– a free day-trip to Nan
Tien Temple, Wollongong
to celebrate the
opening ceremony for
the Nan Tien Bridge.
Due to overwhelming
response, there
are now two full-busloads
of 100 trippers.
Further enquiries will
be on a waiting list basis.
