Schimke ECA Review Since the protestors and the British Columbia government aren’t going anywhere soon, why will the federal government be any more successful in building the Trans Mountain pipeline than was Kinder Morgan? First, under the British North American Act, the federal government has jurisdictional authority for projects crossing provincial borders. B.C. won’t stop engaging in legal battles, but this division of powers and subsequent Supreme Court decisions, gives the federal government more legal strength to complete the project than if it remained in the private sector. Second, there will continue to be protests and in some cases, civil disobedience. “ We have built our economic well-being by exploiting the air, water and natural resources. We cannot turn that off overnight. The saving of planet earth is a very emotional topic and in a democracy citizens have the right to protest. Yes, it can get out of hand and, yes, as with Green Party Leader, Elizabeth May, people can break the law, be arrested and charged. The government has the stomach for this, the private sector does not. I give full credit to Greenpeace and other environmental groups for being instrumental in bringing climate change to a premier position of concern amongst world political and corporate leaders, with only a few exceptions. Even though I might not always agree with their tactics, their work has been invaluable. But I can also see the other side. It’s taken a couple centuries to put our environment on life support and it cannot be reversed overnight. We have built our economic wellbeing by exploiting the air, water and natural resources. We cannot turn that off overnight, throw billions of “ 72 pt East Central Alberta EVIEW 60 pt 48 pt 36 pt V I E W P O I N T S people worldwide out of work, and expect a smooth transition to a carbonfree environment. That strategy would create untold chaos and staggering deaths. It’s all about balance. Today we are having more difficulty constructing pipelines in Canada because of the previous actions of the Harper government which intentionally or unintentionally built extreme distrust of the federal government. In Harper’s 2012, 450-page omnibus budget bill he watered down seven important environmental Acts, including the protection of waterways and species at risk. He de-legitimized the approvals process instituting strict rules on who could speak at National Energy Board hearings and what topics could be discussed. He excluded the public from the hearings and barred environmental scientists from participating. The power play by Harper didn’t get the anticipated quick and smooth construction of the Northern Gateway pipeline. In a democracy, proper process matters and regardless of how much freedom a government gives the private sector to operate, dissenters still have a voice. In Canada, at least for now, opposition foes aren’t simply jailed or disappear. For all these reasons, the government’s decision to nationalize the Trans Mountain pipeline through the construction phase appears to be very well thought out and sound. It may even turn out that our First Nations eventually become the owners of Trans Mountain which would give more First Nations the opportunity for economic freedom and self-reliance. Something the Conservatives have always wanted. The libertarians in the Conservative Party and corporate elite in Calgary aren’t happy about this situation. But I believe industry leaders generally have realized, a little late albeit, that Harper’s regressive environmental stance and hate for scientists was out of step with reality. Gary Leach, president of the Explorers and Producers Association of Canada recently said, “In a perfect world, it wouldn’t be the preferred option to have governments step in”. PrairieView Ontario’s nightmare is over! by Herman Schwenk It took a long time but the Ontario electorate spoke decisively on June 7, 2018. For 15 years the people of Ontario have subjected themselves to ideological abuse by a left leaning Liberal government. Dalton McGinty was elected in 2003 and decided that he would save the planet by introducing his “Green Energy Act”. He immediately set about shutting down Ontario’s coal-fired generation plants and put in place a plan that would replace cheap coal-fired electricity with expensive renewable energy from wind turbines and solar farms. He even passed legislation that prevented rural municipalities from objecting to where wind generators would be located. The end result of this initiative was an economic disaster. What boggles the mind about this disaster is that neither the government nor the people seemed to recognize that Ontario was headed for an economic disaster. The implementation of this act caused the price of electricity to skyrocket forcing many manufacturing businesses to leave the province for the U.S. Electricity is a main input cost for many manufacturing processes. This resulted in the loss of thousands of manufacturing jobs. It also resulted in a decrease of demand for electric power, and now there was a surplus of power. The renewable power producers were still getting the agreed contract price for their power so this forced the government to sell the surplus power to the U.S. at a fire sale price. Renewable power requires conventional generation as a backup. These Liberal governments have caused Ontario to now have the largest per capita debt of any sub-sovereign jurisdiction in the world. It will cost the current and future people of Ontario, and to some extent the rest of us in Canada, hundreds of billions of dollars. Doug Ford and his new government will have a huge challenge to straighten out this mess. The real question is why did it take the people of Ontario 15 years to wake up to the corruption and incompetence that was happening? I think it had to do with the alternative. The alternative was a series of red Tory leaders that appeared to be not much different. In other words, they were liberal light. They were caught up with the same climate change dogma as the liberals. As I have written before, meteorological and geological research scientists have actually proven that C02 emissions have never been the cause of climate change. There are two kinds of Tories, red Tories and blue Tories. Red Tories believe in government intervention just like liberals. They think the government should provide basic services like child support, daycare etc. as a direct government program rather than tax credits where people have the freedom to choose. The Harper government initiated a system of tax credits so people could choose to make their own decisions on what government support they wanted to access. Blue Tories believe that people should have the freedom to make their own choices. While Ford is the leader of the Ontario “Progressive” Conservative Party, he is a blue Tory. He has set himself apart from the old ‘rank and file’ PC’s. The people have recognized he will champion the real change that is so badly needed. He is certain to make choices that will upset the environmental left. The real financial anchor that Liberal and NDP governments have imposed on Canadians is the carbon tax. The rate is not high enough to be a real disincentive for energy consumption, the rate would have to be about five times as high to be a disincentive, it is simply a tax grab made to look like an environmental necessity. Ontario used to be the economic engine of Canada before the liberals became government. Under the leadership of Doug Ford I think the province can be an economic leader again. E C A r e v i e w H A N N A / C o r o N A t i o n / S t e t t l e r , A b J u N E 1 4 ' 1 8 5 mail bag Norfolk Avenue and intersection needs attention Town of Coronation Councillors, I am writing this regarding the corner of Norfolk and Royal in Coronation, Ab. and Norfolk Ave. itself. This corner and street has many issues which need to be addressed by not only you on council but by law enforcement as well. I will try to explain, as best as I can, the issues and maybe you will take my suggestions into consideration as how to fix the problem. The Corner. With the library, pool, playground and ball diamonds along Royal Street and the school, skating and curling rink along Norfolk there is a high amount of traffic at this corner. There are people that exceed the speed limits coming north and south. Not just young drivers. There are numerous people that are exceeding the limit of 40 km/hr going through. There is a playground sign but with no posted speed limit attached to it. It is just a cautionary sign that children may be present. See attached info taken from the Alberta Transportation website or this is the link to view it yourself, www. transportation.alberta.ca/1956.htm. There is a 30 km sign down by the ball diamonds but that does nothing for the library/pool area. My suggestion is to place a sign down from the library stating playground ahead with a lower speed of 30 km/hr sign attached. I also suggest making this corner a 4-way stop. This will also help in making them slow down. Many people already stop at an imaginary stop sign, thinking it is one. This in itself is dangerous. I know this will mean five 4-way stop signs in a row but I would rather stop and slow down than have a child hurt. I would hope you feel the same. The Avenue. Norfolk Avenue is one of the streets, on the north side of town, that goes from one side of town to the other, excluding the trailer court. Other streets are separated by ball diamonds, skating rink and school. Although, Norfolk on the east, has a 4-way stop at the school, it also has a school zone. Concerns on UCP AGM and candidacy Dear Editor, On May 17 three of us that are all new to the riding of Drumheller – Stettler drove 180km to the founding AGM. We arrived to the 7 p.m. meeting to find hundreds of people lined up outside in the rain waiting to get into the hall. While standing in the line, I commented this is sure a lot of people for an AGM and one guy responded “Nate wanted 400 people here tonight”. While we were standing outside, people were handing out a list of individuals running for directors. We thought this was a list of all candidates, but once inside we discovered this was a list of what sounded like the preferred candidates - not all the candidates. Once inside and the meeting finally beginning very late, the current president ran the entire proceeding - including the elections, which I found to be very different. When the call came for president, the current president nominated himself, three calls for nominations were ceased, and he was declared president. The next position for CFO was called, current CFO nominated herself, three calls and nominations cease. Very concerning. Next they said anybody running for directors could now come up and speak. Many candidates spoke but at least three of them mentioned if they were part of the “pack” or “not part of the pack”. WOW. Extremely concerning. For some reason while the ballots were being counted they let the three declared, but not official, candidates speak that are running to be the UCP. Why this was done once again is a huge concern and alarming. Speaking to one gentleman he found out at 3:30 p.m. that day that they would be speaking that evening and one other candidate had a very well polished long prepared speech that was worked on for days. In his speech he spoke of hiring a man on his ranch so he could full time campaign around the riding. Nana’s Blog Tasteless red balls, tomatoes? by Lois Perepelitz The tree in my front yard gets completely covered in white blossoms every spring. I don’t know what kind of tree it is but it sure is pretty in the spring. A few days ago I was sitting in my living room just enjoying the beauty of the tree when I noticed bees flying around in it. There was at least a dozen in there filling themselves up on all the blossoms. I was happy to see them there until I realized that my vehicle was on the other side of that bee filled tree. Oh well, I managed to get past the tree without getting the visitors upset. Seeing those bees and knowing that they are not as common a sight as they used to be got me thinking of one of my pet peeves again, chemicals. Chemicals that are being Perepelitz mail bag sprayed all over the lands, chemicals that kill off the wildflowers and things that the bees need for food, chemicals that make the bees sick and die. We don’t want to even think about what would happen if we don’t have bees. We have chemicals all over our foods too, from seed to table our food gets layered with chemicals. The producers think they have to do it to make money, so they spray one chemical over the fields to get rid of weeds so they can get a bigger crop. Next they spray to get rid of any insects that might damage the crop, and then they spray even more chemicals to make the crop grow faster and bigger. All these chemicals cost a small fortune and it makes me wonder how much they really boost the profits. I certainly do not think they Very concerning since our MLA sure does not have time to be out campaigning. As a person being very active in politics all my life, I am very concerned on the process of this AGM, and also process on how UCP is allowing people to campaign forever in this riding or any other riding in Alberta. These are a few questions I have, and will look forward to your response. • How could the current president run the AGM, and nominate himself? • Why did one candidate feel the need to have 400 people at an AGM? • Why is UCP allowing a candidate to campaign for months around the CA. How is this fair and just especially where there are sitting MLA’s? • Will there be no local vetting committee? • Does UCP have any idea about the “pack”? Dave Nelson, Metiskow, Ab. UCP member. Candidate from 2012 election and winning campaign manager of 2016 election do anything to boost the flavour of the product. Young people are probably tired of hearing that things just don’t taste as good as they used to, but they really do not. Veggies really do not have the same full flavour they used to have. Part of it could be they are just grown too quickly and harvested too soon so they don’t ripen slowly and fully. Another thing that messes with the flavour is now everything has to be so sanitized that the veggies all end up with a bleach flavour. More chemicals! I hate bleached potatoes. It makes me sad to think that there are young people who will never know what a tomato really tastes like. They will think those tasteless red balls they buy in the grocery store are the real thing. I am just grateful that I have friends who still plant a garden and share their bounty with me. Antique - Collectible & Vehicle Auction Allan & Nora Saar Saturday, June 16, 2018 11am @ Big Valley Agri-plex There is a stop sign at the entrance onto Royal St. but after that it is free from any stop or yield signs along the way. This is where the larger problem starts. I have witnessed many people sliding up to the stop sign, barely able to slow down much less stop at the sign before proceeding through. With it being such a long strip of free driving, numerous vehicles have sailed through the stop sign. If they had to yield at some point along this street, they might have been paying attention. Many people that live along this street have these same issues with the speeders. I suggest adding some yield signs to Norfolk Avenue. The stretch is just too long of free driving from the hospital to Royal Street. As it is getting closer to summer vacation for many of these children, there will be more of them, at all times of the day, on this street as there is now. I also would like to request a reply letter to my concerns and suggestions as outlined in this letter, in a timely manner.
