The Northbrook/Glenview District 30 School Board unanimously approved several changes to the 2018-19 academic calendar during its Thursday, June 14 meeting that will bring the year to a close before the end of May. This will allow as much time as possible for crews to complete the new $33-million-plus Maple School to open in time for the 2019-2020 school year, according to Superintendent Dr. Brian Wegley. The 2018-19 school year will start on Aug. 20 and end on May 29 after the board made shifts in the district’s parent-teacher conference schedule and the decision to have class on Columbus Day and Presidents’ Day. Wegley said the board will vote at a later date to delay the start of the 2019-20 school year until late August or early September. “Our goal is to generate the maximum numbers of days in the summer for construction, to tear this down and put up a field and put up all the parking,” Wegley said. The District 30 School Board approved the school’s construction in February, budgeting up to $40.6 million for the project. Construction crews broke ground on the new Maple School in April, with the preliminary framework of the 110,000-square-feet building now going up in the athletic field behind the current building. Several months into the massive undertaking, Wegley said the project is still “on time and on budget,” with no major issues arising so far. “It’s now a process of just completing the construction for the planned designs,” Wegley said. Construction of the two-story building, which will also house the district’s administrative staff, will continue for the next year, Wegley said. “Once the building’s built in early June, there’s a lot of work left to do on the campus,” he warned. Crews will then demolish the current Maple School to create a parking lot and soccer field for the new school, while also installing an underground water-retention system. Built in 1949, the current Maple School will have served students for 70 years by the time it is torn down next summer, and Wegley said the new school has been planned to last even longer. He sees the construction of the “innovative, flexible and responsible” new Maple School as a reflection of the value of education in the “exceptional district that we have.” “This has always been a community that values learning and truly cares deeply about its children,” Wegley said. Nick Espinosa, a cybersecurity expert, raised awareness about the danger of readily trusting technology and offered Nick Espinosa, a professional in the field of cybersecurity and network infrastructure, addresses guest on May 19 during his TEDx talk at the Northbrook Public Library.
