Happy Hens to plant vegetables on Henley bowling greens
THE Hunters Hill community group that has transformed Bedlam Bay into beds
of attractive flowers and vegetables is to turn a green thumb to the vacant bowling
greens at the Henley Bowling Club.
The Happy Hens group has
had enormous success at
Bedlam Bay during the last 12
months and Hunters Hill Council
has given the group’s 150
volunteers an 18 month project
approval to plant vegetable gardens
on the bowling greens.
Approval allows group volunteers
to harvest and eat vegetables
grown there and the
project is being seen as a community
building opportunity.
The Happy Hens have also
been given use of the bowling
green shed and hours of work
will be set by Happy Hens coordinators.
The council stressed that the
bowling greens are controlled
under a strategic plan - the
group is not being given a lease
at the site - and that the project
would be reviewed in 12
months time.
“We are dealing with a community
garden here, so let’s
not be too caught up with the
rules,” Clr Zac Miles said.
HUNTERS HILL Council has
won a major case in the Land
and Environment Court over
the removal of thirteen trees in
Pains Road in December 2015.
Council officers said the case
of Hunters Hill Council v Carter
[2018] NSWLEC 84 saw Council
successfully prosecute defendant
Michael Carter in relation to
the unlawful tree removal of the
trees on a Pains Road property.
“A total of 13 healthy native
tree species ranging in height
from three to ten metres were
cut down and lopped on residential
land owned by the defendant,”
council officers said.
“Seven of the trees were cut
down to near ground level and
six had their branches lopped
with three of the trees dying.”
In other news, Hunters Hill
councillors will workshop a
proposal that could see the
Gladesville Library fully owned
by Hunters Hill Council.
The library is jointly owned
by the City of Ryde but Deputy
Mayor Ross Williams argues
that this shared relationship is
not fair on Hunters Hill because
Ryde holds the lion’s share of
library assets.
He proposed a “swap” where
the City of Ryde gets Gladesville’s
Baby Health Centre in exchange
for the Library.
“There seems to be a very eschewed
relationship with Ryde
and Hunters Hill Council has
contributed millions of dollars
to Ryde for this library, with
nothing to show for it,” he said.
“The swap idea is a thought
bubble and a way of
looking at things a little
bit differently.”
