A HUB FOR WALKS IN EAST DEVON
Britain is famed for its network of walking routes short
and long distance. We all know that walking is the
perfect exercise for health and happiness!
More and more
p e o p l e a r e
choosing walking
holidays, but rather than
the long distance A - B type,
stopping off at different spots
each night and carrying your
luggage, they are looking
to base themselves at a
centre from which a variety
of walks emanate. But where
to choose?
May I propose Beer, the fishing
village on East Devon’s World
Heritage Jurassic Coast. Beer is
an idyllic location and was a finalist
in Channel 4’s 2018 series “Village
of the Year.” But, I hear you ask - if
being by the sea in a picture perfect
setting is great, but what about the
walks and facilities for a week’s stay?
This is where Beer comes into its
own. Although a small village of only
1500 souls it boasts a fine range of
accommodation from hotels, B&B’s,
YHA to many self-catering cottages,
and apartments, perhaps 300 rooms
in all. For catering, Beer has a range
of restaurants from pizza and fish &
chips to wine bars, cafés and finedining
restaurants as well as three
good pubs. There’s a full range of
village shops and galleries and a
large Tesco and Waitrose are only
short drives.
And now the walk! Beer Parish have
been active at mapping out and
testing a week’s worth of intriguing
trails from 5 to 15 miles along the
coast and surrounding beautiful hills
and valleys including Branscombe,
Colyton, Axmouth and Blackbury
Camp. All have “watering holes” en
route and the anticipation of perhaps
a swim in the sea and refreshment
on return to Beer.
Here’s one of the routes to whet your
appetite. Leave Beer and follow the
South West Coastal Path via Beer
Head with its spectacular vista of
Lyme Bay. Descend to Branscombe
Mouth, a great barbecue beach
and a fine café, the Sea Shanty.
Continue on the coast
path deviating towards
The Fountain Head
Inn (one of the highest
rated Devon pubs in
The Good Beer Guide.)
Cross two ridges with
stunning valleys, the
home of Deer and
Buzzards to arrive at
Branscombe by the
famed Mason’s Arms
pub/hotel. Climb back out of
Branscombe and the route takes
you either to the unique Beer Quarry
Caves dating back to Roman times
or the Pecorama complex with steam
railway, restaurant, gardens and kids
attractions. You’re then back in Beer.
9 miles in all. No mountains, but
enough ups and downs to get the
heart beating!
Mike Lambert
Beer Parish have produced a pack
of leaflets detailing each walk
and they are available widely in
the village for only £2.95. The
walks also have a web site www.
circularwalksbeerdevon.co.uk.
So come on down to Beer, it stays
open and is great for walking any
time of year.
