For almost 35 years, Sidmouth
Hospiscare has been offering care
and support to patients in the Sid
Valley with life-limiting illnesses,
and to their carers and families.
The demand for these services is
expected to increase significantly over
the coming years due to: an ageing
population; higher occurrences of
people living with multiple illnesses;
increasing dementia (often combined
with a life-limiting illness such as
cancer); growing levels of frailty;
pressure on beds in community
hospitals; increasing number of the
elderly living alone or with an elderly
carer; and most patients wanting to
remain in their own homes.
Sidmouth is at the forefront of this
challenge, with the Devon Health
and Wellbeing Joint Strategic
Needs Assessment 2017 showing
that Sidmouth is almost a century
ahead of the England average for
population aged 85 or over, with a
very high proportion of lonely older
people and the highest estimated
percentage with dementia.

comments that:
“To address this
challenge, we
need to develop
community wide
approaches. Whatever solutions
we as a community come up with
could provide important learning for
the rest of the UK, as other local
populations grow steadily older”.
Sidmouth Hospiscare has recently
purchased the old doctors surgery
in Sidford and is looking to refurbish
and extend this facility to:
• Increase the number of
nurses and volunteer services
and develop an integrated
model of care with other key
health and care providers, to
provide additional support
particularly in the latter
stages of life to enable
patients to remain in their
own homes;
• Establish a day centre
in Sidmouth to enhance
the physical and mental
wellbeing of patients and
provide respite and support
for carers (including nurse
clinic, complementary therapy,
counselling and education
sessions), with the potential
for use by other local health
and care providers;
• Engage with local businesses,
individuals, community
groups, schools etc. to foster
a community interest in
working together to meet the
challenges and developing
the new building to provide
the best possible facilities,
including: “buy a brick for
£20”, sponsor part of a room,
work together to develop
future services and support.
