Hospice Support
By the time you have received this edition we
would have staged what would have been one of
our major fundraising events for this year. It is a
brand new concept, with a strong involvement of
Swaffham and the surrounding Villages inhabitants.
Preparations have gone extremely well and I know
those volunteers are looking forward on the 17th
June at the Rugby Club to welcome all those that are
involved. Naturally a full report will be appearing in
the next edition of the Newsletter.
The Fundraising Committee is always seeking new
members to bolster the existing team so that they
can continue their vital work raising funds for the
Charity. Granted they have their annual events they
rely on, which are always well supported by the
members of the public. So if you have a new venture
we could utilise or would like to find out further
information on any subject, then please contact us
on Swaffham 01760 722937 and a member of the
Support Team would be only too pleased to speak
and offer advice to you.
The Support Team of the Charity would like to
take this opportunity in thanking our wonderful
supporters and volunteers who continually assist
us with their financial and dedications ensuring we
can continue to offer that much needed support to
the patients we presently assist. Numbers who are
in need of our help continue rise as the population
figures increase, which places more pressure on our
Staff. Please remember to donate whenever we are
fundraising. Thank You.
I recently came across a CD of Eileanora called The
September Sessions. To my horror I saw that we
have been spelling her name incorrectly on our
posters and handouts – we have always left out the
‘ i ‘ - so apologies to her for this mistake! The music
on the disc is so different from what we usually
hear at the Club; it is a studio recording, mainly
soulful, romantic and rather introverted. In front of
a live audience Eileanora becomes much more of an
extrovert entertainer, as was well demonstrated at
our June session.
The line up was Colin Mason – drums, Chris Kirk -
trumpet, Tap Robinson – electric guitar, Geoff Scullard
– electric bass and Eileanora vocals and keyboard.
In the first half I particularly liked Fever with Colin’s
exemplary brush work, and Summertime which
started off with intense emotion from Eileanora from
the very first note with Chris, by contrast, playing a
wonderfully laid back trumpet solo. We also had a
great guitar solo from Tap in September in the Rain
and a terrific up-tempo drum solo from Colin which
ably demonstrated his control of the foot pedals. In
the second half I especially liked the wonderful fade
out at the end of Sentimental Journey. Eileanora’s
extrovert side then came to the fore in Scott Joplin’s
The Entertainer, and I enjoyed Chris’s growling and
flutter-tonguing in Georgia on my Mind. Tap then
stole the show in Jeepers Creepers with some weird
and wonderful guitar sounds. A hard stare from
Eileanora and her comment “Just as well we’re
going back in separate cars” went down well with
the audience. Unexpectedly, Stormy Weather was
played as a Round Midnight type of number in which
Chris showed his mastery of ‘the (empty) pint beer
glass waving around in front of the bell’ technique!
Tap led the final number Route 66 with the band
giving their all, bringing the evening to a rousing close.
Next up is the Lee Vasey Jazz Jam Quartet with
Stella Goodey - vocals and Pete Oxborough – sax.
