October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and once again, CMCC will partner with the Coalition
Against Rape and Abuse (CARA) to raise awareness about this vital issue. The popular and powerful
clothesline exhibit is set to go up Oct. 1 across the second floor bridge. This display is a collection of
T-shirts, all created by survivors of domestic violence, each with a poignant message about domestic
violence. On Oct. 26 at 6 p.m., CARA will once again hold a candlelight vigil in the CMCC courtyard to
honor victims and survivors of domestic violence. We encourage the college community to explore the
exhibit during October, since relationship violence is a significant problem among college-age people. If
you would like a speaker for your class, please contact Carol Realer at CARA at 522-6489.
The noncredit team has hit a home run with a new open-to-the-public workshop titled Dealing with
Difficult People. Offered the last two Friday evenings at CMCC, this class attracted well over a dozen
learners. Timely topic!
Upcoming events...Cape Regional Medical Center is holding a conference today at CMCC, and the
College’s Board of Trustees meets at CMCC, 7 p.m., Sept. 28, in room 113.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
by Sherwood Taylor
CCI on the move: CCI instructors just completed a two-day Games Protection Seminar for the Maryland
State Lottery. The two-day program was held at the Perryville State Police Barracks in Maryland. Newly
assigned personnel were exposed to invaluable information relating to oversight of gaming activities,
especially important in a state where gaming is just beginning. Program evaluations indicated that the
participants were highly satisfied with the training and would recommend it to other colleagues.
Introducing TOR (Training on Request) for Table Games
Ask about TOR (Training on Request) for table games. Busy schedules shouldn’t prevent you from taking
the tables games training you desire. Ask our program and registrations representatives about our new
TOR option. Our representatives will connect you with the table games coordinator to review your
schedule and arrange the earliest possible start date for you to begin. Please direct potential students to
Susan Lee at ext. 4829, or if they are working with One Stop, contact Trudy Mills at ext. 4814.
• General Information: As you know CCI table games classes are scheduled to begin every two
weeks based on the published schedule. The CCI team has been working hard and in a creative
mode to reduce the number of required students for a class. This effort will allow more classes to
run.
• The new TOR option allows the CCI table games coordinator to meet with an interested student
and possibly start them before the next scheduled start date, which will be decided on a
case-by-case basis.
• Registration and Program Representatives: When a potential student requests the TOR or if
you know a table games class has just started, you can recommend the TOR to a potential student
to get him or her registered faster. Contact Mary Martinez and connect the student with her. Please
do not give the student Mary’s number and ask them to call her, or transfer the call to Mary’s
extension. This process should be handled as a “hand” off. Facilitate the meeting between Mary
and the student. Escort the student to CCI or give Mary the student’s contact information for her to
call.
• Atlantic Cape Staff: Please use the selling point of the new TOR to interest students in taking
their table games with CCI. Please direct potential students to Susan Lee or if they are working
with the One Stop to Trudy Mills.
