A note from Nancy Hand, accounts payable: “Thank you to all the
members of the college community who sent cards, letters and prayers on
the loss of my dear father, William Mills. He meant so much to me and
your encouragement helps me get thru this difficult time.”
A message from Josie Chivalette and Cheryl Garwood: “It seems so
easy to say thank you when what you really would like to do is reach out and touch everyone who stood
by you with friendship, love and prayers. We could never have gotten through the past year without the
love and support received from our Atlantic Cape family. So from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so
very much.”
Recent retiree Judy Niewender sends the following: “Just wanted to drop a note of thanks for all the well
wishes I received on my retirement. I was so pleased I had so many visitors at my desk to say goodbye, in
addition to well over 60 e-mails. It was also quite nice that retiree Kathy McGowan dropped by to say
goodbye. I am having such a great time, it ought to be illegal!!! In November, I am going to Paris, so I am
5
trying to learn a little French (not going as well as one would hope)-lol. Again, thanks to all, everyone
was just so nice-it was truly appreciated. Au revoir!”
We regret to report the passing of former English adjunct Robin Kearns. She was 57. Robin worked for
the English department for many years. She had a true passion for education and loved teaching on all of
our campuses. Robin had great energy in the classroom, and her positive outlook on life made her a good
role model for students. She will be terribly missed by her colleagues and former students. Expressions
may be sent to Robin’s husband, Frank “Jay” Kearns, 111 Explorer Lane, Egg Harbor Township, NJ
NEWS FROM ATLANTIC CAPE’S OTHER LOCATIONS
Greetings from the Charles D. Worthington Atlantic City Campus
By Diana Lojweski
The Office of Community Affairs is gearing up for the 2010-2011 Public Employees Charitable
Campaign (PECC). Atlantic Cape employees have shown great dedication in years past and we look
forward to continued success in reaching beyond our fundraising goals. This year’s campaign will be
paperless in an attempt to “Go Green.” Atlantic Cape’s Foundation is included in the list of
donor-designated charitable organizations. A global e-mail will be sent to all employees detailing the start
of the campaign period and instructions on how to make contributions.
Eight students
completed surgical
tech training.
The Health Professions Institute at WACC is proud to announce the completion of
the Surgical Technician program that began Sept. 21, 2009. After nearly a year of
intense training, eight students graduated Sept. 9.
Instructors were Michael Blencowe, Linda Karp, Angela Murphy, Karen
Sherback, Alice Torres and Amy Torres. We join with Dean of Instruction Ron
McArthur and Megan Gargiulo, HPI director, with our best wishes for these
6
students for success in their chosen profession.
Sept. 9 was also graduation day for Pai Gow and Blackjack students at the Casino Career Institute.
Christina Cavage, associate professor, English as a second language, reports that
Gwen McIntyre became a grandmother on June 12 to Brendley McIntyre. Son Jeff
and all are doing well in sunny California! Gwen has been out to visit Brendley twice
since her birth, but frequently “chats” with her granddaughter on Skype!
CMCC’s new picnic tables,
days. Pictured left to right are:
Greetings from the Cape May County Campus
by Lisa Apel-Gendron
Wow, we’ve completed four weeks of the semester already! And it’s all good!
Speaking of good, Dr. George Dailey, history, wants to make sure that all Atlantic Capers (I think
ACCCers is passé) know of his deep gratitude for the avalanche of cards, e-mails, prayers, calls, visits,
well wishes and good thoughts sent his way all summer long. George suffered a heart attack Memorial
Day weekend, and he’s been recuperating very nicely since. Undergoing cardiac rehab right now, George
has visited CMCC several times, and he looks better than ever! All the news is good, and George wants
everyone to know that the get well expressions really did help him through a difficult time. He intends to
teach several sections at CMCC next semester.
Kathleen Denice, testing, is back safe and sound from a quick jaunt to Paris. The trip celebrated the
graduation of her best friend’s daughter from Penn State. Of course, the three ladies had a marvelous time.
Replacement of the sidewalk leading to our main entrance is complete, and it looks spectacular. The job
was finished in less than a week with minimal disruption to pedestrians. A portion of the sidewalk had
collapsed, leaving a large cement divot.
Along with our sparkling new sidewalk comes a pair of picnic tables for
students to use during good weather. Tammy DeFranco and Joan Dillon,
student services, suggested that students needed some additional space to
eat, read or socialize outside. We spoke with Jen Martucci and
Dr. Pat Gentile, resource development, regarding possible funding sources,
and they suggested accessing the Leaves for Learning fund. So, we were
able to purchase two large, sturdy, wheelchair-accessible tables made from
recycled plastic from the fund established five years ago for campus
beautification. The entrance island landscaping project, set to begin this
week, is also funded by Leaves for Learning. Thank you, donors!
You may have heard that the nursing department hosted the National
League for Nursing (NLN) this week for a site review for continuing accreditation of the nursing degree
program. Since their time at the College was limited, the NLN team couldn’t make the trip to CMCC to
tour the campus. Instead,
Carol Mohrfeld, nursing department chair, arranged to have a tour of CMCC videotaped, and the video
was shown to the NLN team when they visited main campus. Smart idea, Carol!
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and once again, CMCC will partner with the Coalition
Against Rape and Abuse (CARA) to raise awareness about this vital issue. The popular and powerful
clothesline exhibit is set to go up Oct. 1 across the second floor bridge. This display is a collection of
T-shirts, all created by survivors of domestic violence, each with a poignant message about domestic
violence. On Oct. 26 at 6 p.m., CARA will once again hold a candlelight vigil in the CMCC courtyard to
honor victims and survivors of domestic violence. We encourage the college community to explore the
exhibit during October, since relationship violence is a significant problem among college-age people. If
you would like a speaker for your class, please contact Carol Realer at CARA at 522-6489.
The noncredit team has hit a home run with a new open-to-the-public workshop titled Dealing with
Difficult People. Offered the last two Friday evenings at CMCC, this class attracted well over a dozen
learners. Timely topic!
Upcoming events...Cape Regional Medical Center is holding a conference today at CMCC, and the
College’s Board of Trustees meets at CMCC, 7 p.m., Sept. 28, in room 113.
Have a worry-free weekend!
CONTINUING EDUCATION
by Sherwood Taylor
CCI on the move: CCI instructors just completed a two-day Games Protection Seminar for the Maryland
State Lottery. The two-day program was held at the Perryville State Police Barracks in Maryland. Newly
assigned personnel were exposed to invaluable information relating to oversight of gaming activities,
especially important in a state where gaming is just beginning. Program evaluations indicated that the
participants were highly satisfied with the training and would recommend it to other colleagues.
Introducing TOR (Training on Request) for Table Games
Ask about TOR (Training on Request) for table games. Busy schedules shouldn’t prevent you from taking
the tables games training you desire. Ask our program and registrations representatives about our new
TOR option. Our representatives will connect you with the table games coordinator to review your
schedule and arrange the earliest possible start date for you to begin. Please direct potential students to
Susan Lee at ext. 4829, or if they are working with One Stop, contact Trudy Mills at ext. 4814.
• General Information: As you know CCI table games classes are scheduled to begin every two
weeks based on the published schedule. The CCI team has been working hard and in a creative
mode to reduce the number of required students for a class. This effort will allow more classes to
run.
• The new TOR option allows the CCI table games coordinator to meet with an interested student
and possibly start them before the next scheduled start date, which will be decided on a
case-by-case basis.
• Registration and Program Representatives: When a potential student requests the TOR or if
you know a table games class has just started, you can recommend the TOR to a potential student
to get him or her registered faster. Contact Mary Martinez and connect the student with her. Please
do not give the student Mary’s number and ask them to call her, or transfer the call to Mary’s
extension. This process should be handled as a “hand” off. Facilitate the meeting between Mary
and the student. Escort the student to CCI or give Mary the student’s contact information for her to
call.
• Atlantic Cape Staff: Please use the selling point of the new TOR to interest students in taking
their table games with CCI. Please direct potential students to Susan Lee or if they are working
with the One Stop to Trudy Mills.
Fall Career Training Programs: The Continuing Education fall 2010 program guide is on all campuses
and is arriving at homes. The fall edition of the guide lists numerous new career training programs offered
this fall. Carol Fraone and Trudy Mills, CE program representatives, are available to meet with
potential participants interested in our career training programs. Please direct inquiries to Carol at
ext. 5650 (East Campus) and Trudy at ext. 4814 (Atlantic City Campus).
