Throwing fishing net during sunrise<br />
carpets that these nets are turned into will never know<br />
the help they are giving to a working ecosystem halfway<br />
around the world or the impact on the families of these<br />
fishermen.<br />
Not only does it enable these fisherman to provide<br />
for their families, other local<br />
women are employed to collect<br />
and clean the nets before selling<br />
to Networks. These women<br />
have set up savings and loan<br />
clubs to pool the money they<br />
have earned and provide loans<br />
to help start up new businesses<br />
or fund other short term needs.<br />
41 tonnes of discarded<br />
fishing nets have been<br />
recovered,<br />
effectively benefitting<br />
4,500 Filipinos.<br />
Since the program begun in 2013, 41 tonnes of<br />
discarded fishing nets have been recovered, effectively<br />
benefitting 4,500 Filipinos. Given that 2 kilos of net<br />
buys 1 kilo of rice, this has made a huge difference to<br />
the lives of these fisherman and their townships with<br />
almost 1 million peso flowing into their economy.<br />
In 2014 the Networks initiative<br />
received the European Business<br />
Award for the Environment and<br />
similar programs are now arising<br />
in other countries following<br />
on from the success in the<br />
Philippines.<br />
