Inspired by book, students collect donations

Hilda Walker students
from Ms. Hourihan’s sixth
grade class were inspired to
help after reading the book
“A Long Walk to Water.” A
book that alternates between
two stories, one begins in
1985 and revolves around
Salva Dut, an 11-year-old
boy living in the South
Sudan who had to make a
1,000 mile journey to flee
from his war torn village
during a civil war. The other
starts in 2008 and follows a
young South Sudanese girl
named Nya who has to walk
8 hours a day for water. Salva’s
story is based on a true
story and he now returns to
Africa with his non-profit
organization to raise money
to help build wells in Sudan.
Ms. Hourihan’s reading
class raised $120 dollars for
his organization, Water for
South Sudan. The students
appreciated helping others
who are less fortunate.

Fun games help solve
math equations at HW

Students in Mrs. Nance’s sixth grade math
classes at Hilda Walker worked together
and had fun reviewing for an end of year
assessment on solving equations. Students
competed in tic-tac-toe and soccer-style
math games. They alternated solving problems
and their partners were responsible for
checking work for correctness. Hilda Walker

teach students how to safely
work in a shop environment
with others, weld, MIG

Program, a program which
helps students get involved
in different career paths by
helping schools set up the

“For the past two years
we have been building and
growing the welding program
from scratch,” said
Dan Brown, Industrial Technology
teacher. “The shop
now has five welding tables,
one giant grinding torch
and torch table, two large
welding horses, and several
working stations.”
