Appendix 1: Rules governing selection
of a fuse to protect a transformer
The selection guides offered by fuse and
switchgear manufacturers take account of the
following rules, for the part that concerns them,
as well as any particularities of the switchgear in
question (confining of fuses modifying their
conditions of cooling for example) (see IEC 787).
I nt : rated current of the transformer.
I sc LV : primary current in case of an LV shortcircuit.
I nf : rated current of the fuse.
I f (): t current leading to melting in time t (the
fuse's characteristic time-current curve).
I 3 : minimal breaking current of the fuse.
Rules to avoid spurious melting
t s : minimal opening time of the combined switch
caused by the striker.
t d : opening time of the combined device under
the action of the tripping device.
I 4 : rated transfer current of the combination.
I 5 : rated take-over current of the combination.
c Do not operate the switch beyond its
performance levels: transfer current less than the
rated value
performance levels: transfer current less than
current in the instance of a fault across the low
voltage terminals,
involving two phases on the low voltage side).
