Pahrump 

Pahrump is an unincorporated town in Nye 

County, Nevada, United States. As of 2010 

the population was 36,441, making it the 

largest settlement in the county. 

History: 

Pahrump was originally inhabited by the 

Southern Paiute. It was slowly inhabited 

by settlers in the late 19th century. They 

reportedly chose the name for Pahrump 

after the original indigenous name Pah- 

Rimpi, or “Water Rock,” so named because 

of the abundant artesian wells in the 

valley. Because of the artesian wells, the 

new inhabitants of Pahrump Valley began 

a number of large ranch-style holdings, 

mostly over 1000 acres (4 km²) in size. On 

the ranches, alfalfa and cotton were grown, 

and livestock were raised. 

Until the 1960s, Pahrump had no telephone 

service except a radio transmitter phone in 

a phone booth next to the small market, 

and there were no paved roads in or out of 

the Pahrump Valley. However, as Las Vegas 

grew, real estate speculation became 

more popular in the area, which led to 

increased interest in Pahrump. This led 

to the introduction of telephone service 

and the construction of a paved highway, 

from Las Vegas to Pahrump, during the 

late 1960s. Later, this road (NV 160) was 

extended from Pahrump northward to US 

95, near Amargosa Valley. A second paved 

road (NV 372) was introduced that went 

from Pahrump to neighboring Shoshone, 

California, which provided a link to the 

Death Valley area, as well as a shorter route 

to those wishing to travel to Los Angeles or 

other areas in California. In the fifties and 

sixties, there was a two-room elementary 

school and the high school students went 

to Shoshone. In 1974, Pahrump’s first high 

school, Pahrump Valley High School was 

constructed. 

Since the late 1970s, Pahrump has 

grown almost exponentially, increasing 

from about 2,000 residents in 1980 to 

32,000 in 2017. Pahrump is an archetypal 

example of an exurb. Almost all significant 

agriculture has grown in the valley and the 

surface aquifers have been filled up over 

the years. Pahrump has also attracted a 

number of notable residents; including 

paranormal talk radio host Art Bell, and 

Michael Jackson, who purchased a home 

in the area in 2008, where he briefly had a 

home studio and home schooled his three 

children. 

Notable businesses in the area include 

Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, 

the Spring Mountain Motor Sports Ranch, 

and the former Dragon Cloud Dojo, which 

closed March 1, 2016. In addition, there 

are several legal brothels such as the 

Chicken Ranch and Sheri’s Ranch, and 

wineries including Sander’s Family Winery 

and Pahrump Valley Winery. 

Like many communities in Nevada, Pahrump 

has an unincorporated town status, with a 

limited government that manages land use 

planning, recreation, and fire, while leaving 

most services to Nye County. In May 2009, 

the town board set up an advisory board to 

study incorporating Pahrump as a town or 

city but the town opposition was too great 

and any plans to incorporate Pahrump 

were dropped. 

On November 15, 2006, the Pahrump town 

board voted for an ordinance declaring 

English the official language of business, 

forbidding the display of foreign flags 

and denying any benefits to illegal aliens. 

A measure in the ordinance requires an 

American flag to be displayed above any 

other flag, regardless of what organization, 

nation or government it represents. This 

law was never repealed. In 2012 the 

citizens of Pahrump voted to disband the 

Town Board form of government in favor 

of becoming an advisory board under the 

County Commissioners. It was finalized 

in 2014 when the incumbent elected 

members’ terms expired. Per the Town 

of Pahrump website, the elected Pahrump 

Town Board was disbanded as of January 

5, 2015. 

On November 4, 2017, Koenigsegg 

Automotive AB achieved the highest top 

speed of a production car ever, surpassing 

the Bugatti Veyron. The Koenigsegg Agera 

RS reached a top speed of 277.9 mph on 

Nevada State Route 160.

Pahrump Valley Museum & 

Historical Society

The Pahrump Historical Society was 

established in 1991 by Harry “Button” 

Ford and Charles Gallivan. The 

Pahrump Valley Museum is the result 

of many years of planning by this 

dedicated group. See what life was 

like in early Pahrump. Exhibits include 

early farming and mining equipment; 

early man (exploration and the Old 

Spanish Trail- 1776 to 1848) items 

from the cowboy and pioneer family 

The museum has acquired several 

historic buildings from early Pahrump 

and is in the process of assembling 

a “Main Street Pahrump” display on 

the museum grounds. These include 

the Raycraft and Bowman Tie Housesconstructed 

entirely of railroad ties 

from the Tonopah-Tidewater Railroad, 

the old Pahrump General Store 

(from the Pahrump Ranch), and the 

Pahrump One-Room Schoolhouse. 

One of the premier exhibits featured 

at the museum is the Kariel and Jean 

Huff President Lincoln Memorabilia 

Collection. One of the finest in the 

country. Lincoln was in office the 

year Nevada became a state (1864) 

A popular display at the museum is a 

wonderful example of a southwestern 

garden, featuring a large variety 

of cacti which are labeled for easy 

identification. 

The garden graces the front entrance 

to the museum and is maintained by 

the Pahrump Valley Garden Club. The 

museum is currently in the remodeling 

stage, adding 4,500 square feet to the 

existing 5,000 square feet of exhibit 

space. Visit the museum today, but 

return often, to see how they have 

grown! The museum is open Tuesday 

through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pahrump Valley Speedway 

The Pahrump Valley Speedway makes its home 

in Pahrump and brings thousands of racers and 

race fans to the valley each year promising action 

and thrills galore. 

The Speedway is dedicated to providing family 

style fun at prices families can afford. The highspeed, 

clay based, high banked quarter-mile 

dirt track is one of the few remaining in the 

U.S. Adult tickets are $10. For Seniors 55+ it’s 

$8. each; Children 6-14 years are $6. (age 5 and 

under are FREE) Try the Family Six Pack: $30. 

for two adults and four kids under age 17. Pit 

Passes are $20 each. Divisions include Bombers; 

Coupes; Dwarfs; IMCA Modifieds; Micro Sprints;

Outdoors 

Listed below are some of our favorite trails for mountain 

biking, ATVs and off-road vehicles. There are so 

many trails in and nearby Pahrump; it’s impossible to 

include them all. 

Carpenter Canyon Road, Wallace Canyon Road, and 

Wheeler Wash are great trails for beginners and intermediate 

mountain bikers, ATVs and off-road vehicles. 

Off-road vehicles love Carpenter Canyon! Confident 

drivers will enjoy this challenging double-track 

through the trees with awesome break out views of 

the Pahrump Valley below, and peaks of the Spring 

Mountains above. Hiking trails start at Carpenter 

Canyon unimproved campgrounds, accessible by 

4×4 or two-wheel drive, with good ground clearance. 

A few miles of easy hiking gradually turns extreme 

with a steep ascent to Mt. Charleston. 

Wallace Canyon offers an easy foot path and plenty 

of parking. Mt. Charleston can also be reached from 

Wallace. 

Wheeler Wells and the historic charcoal kilns are accessible 

by most 2WD vehicles, even pulling small 

travel trailers. Hiking trailheads are at both sites. 

Wheeler Pass Indian Springs on US 95 is a favorite of 

experienced 4×4 drivers. 

A quick 35-minute drive northwest of Las Vegas, Mt. 

Charleston features more than 50 miles of marked 

trails over the rocky terrain. From paved and dirt 

trails to strenuous climbs, hikers and mountain bikers 

of all ages and abilities will love the beautiful views 

and cooler temperatures at the top of the mountain. 

Mt. Charleston is also a great area for skiing, picnicking 

and camping. 

The Elk Meadows Trails is a network of narrow, challenging 

paths that are sure to entertain experienced 

bikers. Be sure to share the path with deer and elk 

who sometimes wander along these trails. 

Drive the 13-mile loop around the Red Rock Canyon 

National Conservation Area and enjoy sightseeing, 

vistas and overlooks from the comfort of your seat. 

Or if the thrill of adventure is more your speed, explore 

nearly 20 different day hikes through the wilderness 

and natural springs.

Use of HHB Equestrian Trail Park is open to eligible 

riders/handlers and their equestrian partners. 

Eligible riders/handlers and their equine partners 

will have completed an ‘Introduction to Mountain 

Trail’ coaching clinic or the equivalent individual 

lessons with an approved trainer and facility, including 

Mark Bolender or Barbara H. Callihan. 

The park will open to the eligible riders/handlers 

via a reservations system for use in the following 

ways: 

• private and semi-private lessons 

• coaching clinics 

• public access for open riding 

and conditioning 

• private access bookings for Members 

• schooling challenges (play days) 

• official competitive IMTCA Challenges 

• social gatherings and events

Gambling Glossary 

Speak like a Casino Pro! 

The lingo used inside of casinos may sound a little like a language 

of its own. Familiarizing yourself with the words used 

on the casino floor will make your gambling experience more 

memorable – and make you sound like a professional. 

Bluff: in a card game, raising a weak or worthless hand in an attempt 

to drive other players out of the game. 

Comps: complimentary gifts or points given to players when they 

play more at that casino. 

Flush: A hand in poker that consists of five cards of the same suit. 

Full House: A poker hand made up of a three of a kind along with a 

pair. 

Hit: in Blackjack, the term used to get another card from the dealer 

to add to your hand. 

Pit Boss: a person who supervises all the games and casino personnel 

in an assigned area; checking for cheating, settling disputes and 

handing out the comps. 

Point: A terms in craps for the starting number for the craps game 

that the player must roll again before that player sevens out. 

Push: A term used when the dealer and a player have the same 

hand; no money changes hands. 

Straight: A poker hand consisting of five cards in consecutive order.

Did You Know? 

• You might think of it as the gambling 

state, but silver ore helped put 

Nevada on the map. The 1859 

discovery of the Comstock Lode 

triggered a silver rush and population 

boom. Nevada’s location and mineral 

wealth made it an attractive potential 

Union state during the Civil War, and 

so it was. That’s why Nevada’s also 

known as the Battle Born State. 

• California’s known as the Golden 

State, but most U.S. gold comes 

from Nevada. 

• In Spanish, “nevada” means 

“snow-capped.” But if you say 

the state’s name with the Spanish 

pronunciation—Nev-AH-da—you 

probably don’t live there. Locals 

usually pronounce it Nev-AD-a. 

• Nevada was originally inhabited by 

the Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe 

tribes. The first permanent nonnative 

settlement, built in 1851, 

belonged to a different group—the 

Mormons. 

• Only 18 states have an official state 

grass. Nevada and Utah share 

the same one—Indian ricegrass, 

a popular food among bison, 

jackrabbits, and people on glutenfree 

diets. The latter consume it as 

Montina flour. 

• Nevada is also one of seven U.S. 

states with no individual income 

tax. It doesn’t collect corporate 

income tax, either. 

• The iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las 

Vegas sign was created by 35-yearold 

graphic designer Betty Willis in 

1959. She never trademarked the 

design, calling it her “gift to the 

city.” Willis continued working in 

neon signage until she was 77. 

• With fewer than 10 inches of rain 

per year, Nevada’s the driest state 

in the U.S. 

• Nevada’s the seventh-largest state 

in size, and about 86 percent of 

its land is owned by the federal 

government. From 1951 to 1992, 

928 nuclear tests were performed 

at the Nevada Test Site just 65 miles 

northwest of Las Vegas. 

• Nevada’s the only U.S. state to 

legalize prostitution, but only in 

the form of regulated brothels in 

counties with populations under 

400,000. So all that prostitution that 

occurs in bigger cities like Reno and 

Las Vegas is illegal... and thriving. 

• While several states don’t have laws 

banning public intoxication, Nevada 

is the only one that specifically 

prohibits any local or state law from 

making it a public offense. It also 

has a statewide law allowing the 

24-hour sale of booze from bars, 

restaurants, and stores. 

• Which brings us to the well-known 

tourism slogan, “What happens 

in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” Though 

different versions of the saying have 

been used over the years by various 

groups, “What happens here, stays 

here” was first used in Las Vegas 

Convention and Visitors Authority 

ad campaigns in December 2002. 

The Las Vegas advertising firm 

R&R Partners created the slogan 

and controversially bought the 

trademark from the Authority for $1. 

• Hoover Dam, located on the border 

of Nevada and Arizona, was a 

massive undertaking. Ideas for a dam 

had been investigated since 1900, 

but the project wasn’t authorized 

until 1928. Construction began in 

1931, and Hoover Dam was the 

largest dam in the world—726 feet 

high and 1,244 feet long—when it 

was completed in 1935. It was the 

largest producer of hydroelectric 

power in the world until 1948. 

• Hoover Dam was originally called 

Boulder Dam. In 1947, it was 

renamed after Herbert Hoover, 

who negotiated the Colorado River 

Compact as the U.S. secretary of 

commerce before becoming the 

31st U.S. president. Twelve years 

earlier, Hoover hadn’t even been 

invited to the dam’s dedication 

ceremony. 

• Reno is farther west than Los 

Angeles.
