Aberdeen Harbour Board (AHB) has reported an increase in profits thanks to a £10.9 million boost
from the sale of land. In its recently published annual review and accounts, the premier North East
port records a 5% increase in vessel arrivals since 2016, and the first increase in vessel arrival
numbers since 2014. Figures for pre-tax profits rose from £18.64 million in 2016 to £26.98 million in
2017. This increase was due in total to a £10.9m gain on the disposal of land.
With operating profits remaining static, in line with expectations, the sale of the land supports AHB’s
on-going plans to generate funding for its £350 million South Harbour development.
Michelle Handforth, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Harbour, said: “Following commencement of the
South Harbour Project in spring 2017– fulfilling a target schedule that the port set back in 2014 – we
saw significant progress over the past 12 months and construction activity is set to garner pace this
year as we move closer to a target end date of 2020.
“The sale of harbour land, which accounted for the total increase in pre-tax profits, contributes to the
funding of the project, which will support not just Aberdeen and Scotland, but the UK as a whole.”

WHAT FUTURE FOR THE UGIE HOSPITAL?
With regard to the possible/proposed closure of the Ugie Hospital. In addition to what I wrote this week to the Press &
Journal, I would like to add a few other notes of concerns since I know that your paper reaches much of this town's population.
The Ugie closed the doors of Ward 2 (psycho-geriatric unit) some years ago. The windows were boarded up quite recently.
That was sad enough (especially for those of us who knew what pleasant wards they were) but I have since been
told that they also switched off the water and the heating. Obviously this caused further deterioration in that building.
With regard to Ward 1, this ward with its extremely dedicated staff has been a life-saver for many families in Peterhead
and area. To avoid bed-blocking in Aberdeen, so many patients requiring more care (both long and short-term) before
being sent home, are given a bed at the Ugie. There they are nursed by the dedicated staff and given physiotherapy and
other treatments they need. This is a great bonus not only for the patients but for their families who, without that
hospital would face a long journey back and forth to Aberdeen every day.
The building itself is large and would lend itself to complete refurbishment, to being modernised and to being extended
with even a second floor added. There is plenty room there for parking and it sits on such a lovely site overlooking the
sea on one side and a garden on the other. I know that the comment from Grampian Health Board will be 'lack of funds
for such a major project'. However, I know that the funds could be found if they wanted to do it. This refurbishment will
cost a great deal less than their proposed Health Village.
In the past it has been said that we in Peterhead have been too complacent and just let things happen. Let us be a bit less
apathetic this time and fight against closure. Most of us at some time have had very good reason to be grateful to the
Ugie and to those who work there. I hope the good work can continue.

Join Lyla at the Edinburgh
Kiltwalk for Parkinson’s UK
Lyla Munro from Broomhill in Aberdeen is heading to the capital
to take part in the Edinburgh Kiltwalk in September. Lyla’s
already raised more than £700 towards her target and she wants
as many kiltwalkers as possible to join her in raising funds for
Parkinson's UK.
Lyla’s been inspired to take part by the memory of her aunt –
Hazel Lefevre – who lived with Parkinson’s. And her decision to
support the charity has become even more poignant as a second
aunt has recently been diagnosed with the condition.
Lyla says: “Parkinson’s has had such an impact on my family
that I’m determined to raise funds for the charity. They provide
great services and are leading the way in trying to uncover a cure.
I’m doing the full marathon-length Kiltwalk so it will be a real
challenge. I appreciate all the support I’ve had and I’d love it if
others can join me in walking for Parkinson’s UK - your support
means more than words can say.”

A team of four Year S2 students from
Mintlaw Academy in Peterhead has
fought off tough competition from
hundreds of schools across the UK to
become winners for the North of
Scotland in Shell’s annual national
schools’ science competition, The
Bright Ideas Challenge.
By 2050, with around 9 billion people
on the planet it is predicted that
demand for energy will double
creating a need to produce more and
cleaner energy. These complex global
challenges will demand the skills of
more scientists and engineers than
ever, yet the UK currently has an
annual shortfall of 59,000 engineering
graduates.
The Bright Ideas Challenge seeks to
inspire young people about the role
they can play in shaping a brighter
future. It asks young people aged 11-
14 to address the complex energy
challenges of the future and imagine
innovative solutions for making our
future cities clean, efficient, vibrant
places to live, work and play. In their
entries students are asked to demonstrate
their understanding and
application of STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Maths)
and ability to combine this with creative
problem solving and team work.
With 16.4% of people in the world
using cars as part of their daily lives, Team Smart Sparksfrom Mintlaw Academy looked for a way to make cars in future
cities rely on renewable sources of energy. The team’s innovative solution was a new wind and light powered hybrid
car that would be powered by a solar panel integrated into the car’s roof and a miniature wind turbine that would sit
at the front of the car’s engine.
Together these smart features would create energy that would be stored in a generator and released as needed. The
team’s idea was singled out for its simple, cost effective way of re-inventing a mode of transport that many future city
inhabitants will continue to rely on.
The winning team’s bright idea won them £1,500 to boost the STEM learning experience at their school, plus a VIP trip
to Make the Future Live, Shell’s four day festival of innovation in London, taking place at the iconic Queen Elizabeth
Olympic Park in London from 5-8 July.
12 other winning ideas from different regions across Great Britain included everything from tanks that would convert
food and grass waste into fuel to power domestic cookers to power generating shoes that would convert the
kinetic energy created by walking into electrical energy to power personal devises, demonstrating the potential for
creative energy innovations across housing, transport, food production and waste disposal in our future cities.
Speaking about the team’s winning idea, Marcus-Alexander Neil, Shell UK Education Manager, commented: “It is a
real privilege to see the passion and ingenuity this generation brings to the competition. The team from Mintlaw
Academy really impressed the judging panel with their fresh thinking. By looking at things from a different perspective
they have come up with a creative idea that is also backed up by solid STEM thinking.
“Our hope is that participating in The Bright Ideas Challenge will encourage many of our talented winners to put those
skills to good use as the much needed scientists and engineers of tomorrow.” Continued on Page 8

The national champion of The Bright Ideas Challenge will
be announced at Make the Future Live on Friday July 6,
2018, winning a total of £5,000.
As VIP guests at Make the Future Live, the team from
Mintlaw Academy will enjoy hands-on science shows,
buzzing panel debates and the latest VR (virtual reality)
and AR (augmented reality) experiences alongside live
music and street food.
They will also experience Shell’s world famous
Eco-marathon where university student teams from around
the world compete to be champions of fuel efficiency in
prototype vehicles they have designed and built. Each
team is given a single litre of fuel and set the challenge of
driving as far as they can, with the current record standing
at 3,771km/l!

Last chance for communities in Scotland to get up to £10,000 healthy heart funding
Community groups in Scotland have just two weeks left to apply for a regional grant of up to £10,000 to help local people look after
their hearts.
National charity Heart Research UK is urging groups to submit applications for the Heart Research UK and Subway® Healthy Heart
Grant, before Monday 2 July.
The Heart Research UK and Subway® Healthy Heart Grant is available for original and innovative projects that promote heart
health and reduce the risk of developing heart disease in the community. Projects should aim to promote activities such as cooking
skills, healthy eating, improving physical activity levels and mental wellbeing, all with a focus on a heart healthy lifestyle.
The £10,000 has been raised locally in Subway® stores throughout Scotland, and through the nationwide Subway Helping Hearts
Family 5K fun runs including in Glasgow and Edinburgh last year (May and June respectively).
Barbara Harpham, Chief Executive at Heart Research UK, says: “The aim of our partnership with the Subway® brand is to
encourage people to make good healthy choices and give practical help. This grant will help even more people learn how to look
after their heart health and lead healthier, longer lives. It’s great that so many customers and staff at Subway® stores have raised the

said, "As schools, colleges and
universities prepare for their
summer break, the tourist
season nears its peak, and our
weather hopefully takes a
turn for the better, we can
expect to see an increase in
the number of people venturing
out on foot and pedal cycles
to enjoy it.
"I am heartened by the statistics
issued earlier this week
which showed that casualties
on our roads are the lowest
since records began. It is still
the case, however, that 146
people lost their lives on our
roads in 2017, and I am all too
aware of the devastation such
incidents cause, a devastation
that extends well beyond
immediate family and friends,
and one that lasts a lifetime
for those affected.
"All road users, particularly
those in the vulnerable category,
are encouraged to take
responsibility for their own
safety and to share our road space respectfully and responsibly too. The increased use of new technologies,
mainly smart phones, has increased the risks of road traffic distraction, for both drivers and pedestrians. Pedestrians
who walk when they are distracted by mobile phones are commonly referred to as Smombies
(smart phone zombies) are at particular risk, and I am appealing to them to be aware of their surroundings at
all times.
"It is a sad fact that young people under the age of 15 are most at risk of being injured on our roads, while
pedestrians over the age of 64 accounted for a third of the pedestrians killed. Almost two thirds of pedestrians
who were killed or seriously injured were male, yet they make up only 49% of the population, and
around a quarter of the pedestrians killed on the roads were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
"During this week-long campaign, all Police Scotland officers will be out engaging with the public to both educate
and, where necessary, enforce, to positively influence attitudes and road user behaviour.

Four youths charged in connection with assault
We are aware of a video circulating on social media
regarding an assault on a young boy in the Peterhead
area taken on June 6, 2018.
Four teenagers – three aged 14 and a 16-year-old – have
been charged in connection with the incident and will be
reported to the Youth Justice Management Unit.
Inspector George Cordiner said: “The assault was
reported to Police on the day it occurred and our officers
acted quickly to charge four youths in connection and
seize the mobile telep...hone that the incident was
recorded on.
“We had hoped for the victim's sake that the footage
would not be circulated on social media however we are
aware that this is now the case and will look to
investigate this aspect of the incident with a view to
reporting the person responsible.
“I would like to thank all those who
assisted officers during the enquiry and
the wider community for joining with us

NFU Scotland has written to Aberdeenshire councillors asking them to
back planning proposals for development at Thainstone, Inverurie, when
they consider the application next week.
The Union views the proposal from Scotbeef Inverurie to relocate its
existing business and erect a new £20 million purpose-built abattoir and
meat production facility at Thainstone Business Park as a huge
opportunity for investment in the North East which will bring jobs and a
modern, state of the art, food processing site.
In its letter to councillors, the Union points out that cattle production
and beef processing in the North East has a clear downstream impact,
supporting hundreds of allied businesses such as hauliers, animal feed
producers, agricultural suppliers, construction and much more, creating
much needed employment and economic activity in many North East
communities.
In signing the letter, Charlie Adam, a beef producer at Leochel-Cushnie,
near Alford, said: “I firmly believe that the proposals to develop at this
site are critical to the profitability and sustainability of cattle production,
both in the North East and in Scotland more generally. NFUS support
for this project has the backing of the whole Livestock committee. In a
very competitive food market, in which margins are tight, it’s essential
that firms invest in infrastructure to meet the needs of the market and to
continue to support the jobs and rural economy to which they are
inextricably linked.

The Scottish SPCA was delighted to welcome a baby foal
into the world last week. Scotland’s animal welfare charity
welcomed the healthy colt into the world at their Aberdeen
Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre.
Centre Manager Graeme Innes said, “We’ve not had a foal
born at our centre here in Aberdeen since the World Cup
Final in 2014 so this was a lovely June surprise.
“His mother, Anna, came into our care with her daughter
Nova and we knew we didn’t have long to wait for this little
guy to make his appearance.
