Diamond Blade Fencing Club
Diamond Blade Fencing Club is offering fun and unique experiences for
children 5to12 years old who have little or no experience at all. Fencing is
a beautiful and elegant sport by the nature of it’s stance and movements.
It is also avery broad discipline as it teaches your MIND &BODY to work
together.
One learns to think and move fast. It challenges your reaction time
against your opponent so that you learn to make decisions very quickly.
The fencing techniques are taught and learned methodically, allowing a
fencer to develop agood memory as well as patience and perseverance.
Fencing is also awell-rounded sport that offers adiverse amount of
learning experiences that taps into the many aspects of a child’s growth
and development. The sport fosters team spirit as well as nurtures
individuality and self-reliance. It teaches self-discipline while reinforcing
mutual respect for each other.
In our camps, we introduce the students to the foundation, history, rules
& techniques in fencing. They are engaged in avariety of game-based
coordination drills as well as agility and strength exercises. We stress the
importance of playing fair and exhibiting sportsmanlike behaviour. Achild
learns invaluable life skills while engaging in fencing as asport!
Inspirethem…
to read all summer
Avoiding ‘Summer BrainDrain’and
maintainingliteracylevelsinthe holidays
Summer is atime for
children to relax, get
outdoors and take a
break from school. However,
many parents are aware that a
summer without reading can be
detrimental to achild’s literacy,
and the terms ‘summer slide’ and
‘summer brain drain’ are widely
accepted in education.
Yetwhat if your child refuses
to read? “Make them” Ihear
an authoritarian voice cry! The
problem with such astrategy is
that it is unlikely to be successful
in the long term and at worst
turns reading into apunishment.
The key is to get achild ‘reading
for pleasure’ which by definition
from the National Literacy Trust
implies ‘reading of their own free
will, anticipating the satisfaction
they will get from reading.’
So how can we bring about
achange in the reading
Did you know?
Reading for pleasure ismore
important for children’s cognitive
development than their parents’ level
of education and more a powerful
factor in life achievement than
socio-economic background –
source: The Reading Agency.
habits of children who refuse
to pick up abook? Change
happens, in my opinion and
having spent several years
working with children who
struggle with literacy, when there
is achange in their perception of
reading. In the words of Albert
Einstein: “The world as we have
created it is aprocess of our
thinking. It can’t bechanged
without changing our thinking.”
Here’s how you can try to
change that perception:
Encourage joy
Create an environment full of
meaningful resources that are
welcoming to aspecific child,
encouraging them to delve
further. “Idon’t like books” and
“reading is boring” are common
phrases Ihear as aLiteracy and
Dyslexia Intervention Specialist.
What is it they enjoy doing?
When achild has reached
the point of refusing to
read it isn’t about what
they are reading, it is
about getting them to
start the process of
reading –magazines,
comics, movie reviews,
football cards, fact books
– praise any ofthose
toencouragethejoy
thatcancomefromthe
writtenword.
Reading is not arace
Even from ayoung age children are
acutely aware ifthey are different
and they will likely give up or not
try
if they feel they have already
lost the race. Reinforcing with a
child that reading is not arace
is crucial. Areportrt published by
the Department of Education on
Reading for Pleasure noted that
akey reason children don’t read
relates to how it makes them
feel. The tortoise and the hare
approach is perfect here: focus
on the progress your child makes,
whatever the speed. Concentrate
less on how well the child is reading
but more onfostering an enjoyment
of it. Any progress is positive and
needs to be encouraged with praise
and rewards.
Targeted rewards
Iamafirm believer in the use of
incentives for children who are
struggling to read. Most children
respond well to this approach
and rewards don’t have to cost
anything. Achild once told me
that the best reward would be
if his Dad played football with
him after school on the days he
read. There isevidence to show
that literacy targeted rewards can
work well in fostering the reading
for pleasure goal. Whatever the
carrot, I say dangle it and feel no
shame doing so.
NATIONAL
READING
SCHEME
With the expense of summer,
parents may be wary of
stocking up on books at home.
This is where the Reading
Agency with its National
Reading Scheme supporting
literacy, the Summer Reading
Challenge, comes in.
Set up in 1999 this program
works with local libraries to
encourage summer reading
among children aged 4to11.
The success of this program
is evident with over 82% of
parents/carers reporting that
their child was encouraged to
read more during the summer.
An outward mindset
Studies into change have
typically shown that permanent
change happens when the
individual ‘thinks outwards
towards others’. Encouraging
your child to have an outward
mindset, seeing beyond
themselves, can foster reading
for pleasure. Asking your child to
read to apet, afavourite toy or
afamily member can encourage
them to think outside their own
needs when it comes to reading.
Set attainable targets…
…only then will children develop
confidence in themselves and
their abilities, and gain trust in
themselves. Setting atarget of
“I’d like you to read to me for
aminimum of five minutes and
amaximum of 15 minutes” is a
good target for achild struggling
to pick up abook. Motivating
them to start
can be as simple as
“I’ll count down from five.”
Anew primary school has
opened in your area.
Many parents would welcome
an alternative to those stressful
mornings –the school run, packed
lunches, traffic jams, school
uniform, misplaced books and the
constant battle against the clock.
Having successfully arrived at the
school gates, there’s still friendship
issues, money for school trips,
playground mishaps and large
classes to contend with.
Thousands of parents have already
chosen aschool that provides an
instant solution. After 13 years of
running asuccessful independent
online secondary school, InterHigh
School www.interhigh.co.uk is now
launching its primary school division -
InterHigh Juniors.
Children from as young as 8
will now be able to go to school
online and benefit from the rich
and engaging experience of the
school’s powerful learning platform.
Qualified and experienced
primary teachers will focus on
developing young learners who
are inquisitive, vivacious and
enterprising.
Class sizes are small, a
maximum of 15 pupils in any
class. This ensures that each pupil
receives the vital teacher attention
and promotes personalised
learning where every child can
learn and achieve at their own
pace. Lessons are every week day
morning of term time and every
lesson is recorded. This means
pupils, and parents, can revisit the
lesson at any time.
To help parents and pupils get
a good insight into the school,
University College School was
part of University College, London
and moved to its current location
in Hampstead in 1907. UCS was
founded to promote the benthamite
principles of liberal scholarship,
offering education to children at each
stage of their development from the
ages of 4-18. Intellectual curiosity,
breadth of study and independence
of mind combine to achieve academic
excellence; they are not subordinate
to it. Selecting children with no regard
to race or creed, UCS fosters in them
a sense of community alongside a
tolerance of and arespect for the
individual. By offering the fullest range
of opportunities for personal and
for group endeavour, it teaches the
value of commitment and the joy of
achievement. It is aplace of study,
Broomfield School
If your child is aged 9orover it is
likely that you are already starting
to think about the next steps in their
education and moving from primary
school to the right secondary school.
A 2015 study by UCL highlighted
the top concerns for parents when
thinking about the
transition to secondary.
• The quality of teaching
• Welfare and safety
• Homework
• Making friends
At Broomfield we are very aware
of these concerns and work with
pupils, parents and primary schools to
ensure that our new pupils joining us
in September do so with confidence
and quickly settle into their new
environment.
We place great emphasis on the
quality of our teaching. We know that
it must be of the highest quality. Our
teachers therefore have the correct
vision, work hard, buy into training
constantly to improve their practice
and enjoy their work with their classes.
Staff and pupils work proactively
together to ensure that bullying and
safety are not issues within the school.
We have for instance successfully
trained pupils as Peer and Antibullying
Mentors. Pupils feel safe
because, in the words of one pupil,
‘everyone is friendly and staff are
approachable’. Ofsted 2015.
Pupils are supported through
activities at their Induction and during
Tutor time to build new friendships,
which they quickly establish and
because Broomfield is asmall, family
school which means it is easy for
pupils to get to know us and for us to
get to know them.
We have something very special to
offer your child and therefore invite
you to visit Broomfield School either
at our Open Evening on 9th October
at 6pm, or one of our Open Mornings.
Planning ahead for the 11+
Is your child going into Year 5
after the summer break? If so,
alarming as it may seem, it will
be time to decide whether they
will sit any entrance exams for
selective state schools and start
to plan how to approach their 11+
preparations.
11+ exams are not for everyone.
It’s essential to have your child
academically assessed to find
out if they would cope in a
highly academic selective senior
school, and of course whether
they could succeed against the
increasingly fierce competition
for places. There are of course
three main options for senior
school: state selective, state
non-selective, and independent
schools (almost all of whom are
selective). If you decide to go
selective, the two routes and set
of requirements are very different
and your preparations need to be
tailored to the target schools.
To succeed, your child
needs to be taught both the
11+ curriculum and the exam
techniques needed to optimise
results. Standard primary
school lessons will not provide
adequate preparation, so
some level of tutoring and/or
workshops can be important
to dramatically boost both a
child’s knowledge and their
confidence to face the exams.
JK Educate are experts in
preparing children for the 11+
exams for state selective and
independent schools and offer
academic assessments for all
children, including suitability
for the 11+. If you would like
Seize the summer with
Explore Learning
Research shows 2/3
of children fall behind
in their studies over
summer. Miss Evans,
a year 6 teacher,
stated “Teachers
often find that
children begin the
new school year having forgotten key
skills. It’s important that children have
opportunities over the summer break
to continue to develop their abilities.”
Charlotte Gater, Head of
Curriculum at Explore Learning,
shared her ideas on how you can help
your child seize the summer.
Start ablog
Give your child anote book to jot
ideas down whilst you are out and
about, then write up what you’ve
done. Referencing pictures is agreat
describe what is happening and get
their creativity flowing.
you’ve been up to. They’re only short
so are awonderful way to get your
Pop a book in your bag so you
can use this when travelling on
keep them engaged with what they
are reading. Visit explorelearning.
