pupils, parents and primary schools to
ensure that our new pupils joining us
in September do so with confidence
and quickly settle into their new
environment.
We place great emphasis on the
quality of our teaching. We know that
it must be of the highest quality. Our
teachers therefore have the correct
vision, work hard, buy into training
constantly to improve their practice
and enjoy their work with their classes.
Staff and pupils work proactively
together to ensure that bullying and
safety are not issues within the school.
We have for instance successfully
trained pupils as Peer and Antibullying
Mentors. Pupils feel safe
because, in the words of one pupil,
‘everyone is friendly and staff are
approachable’. Ofsted 2015.
Pupils are supported through
activities at their Induction and during
Tutor time to build new friendships,
which they quickly establish and
because Broomfield is asmall, family
school which means it is easy for
pupils to get to know us and for us to
get to know them.

Planning ahead for the 11+
Is your child going into Year 5
after the summer break? If so,
alarming as it may seem, it will
be time to decide whether they
will sit any entrance exams for
selective state schools and start
to plan how to approach their 11+
preparations.
11+ exams are not for everyone.
It’s essential to have your child
academically assessed to find
out if they would cope in a
highly academic selective senior
school, and of course whether
they could succeed against the
increasingly fierce competition
for places. There are of course
three main options for senior
school: state selective, state
non-selective, and independent
schools (almost all of whom are
selective). If you decide to go
selective, the two routes and set
of requirements are very different
and your preparations need to be
tailored to the target schools.
To succeed, your child
needs to be taught both the
11+ curriculum and the exam
techniques needed to optimise
results. Standard primary
school lessons will not provide
adequate preparation, so
some level of tutoring and/or
workshops can be important
to dramatically boost both a
child’s knowledge and their
confidence to face the exams.
