4.2 Canada
To a large extent, surplus food redistribution in
Canada has followed the U.S. example, <strong>and</strong> is
dominated by food banks, again with a religious
basis. 52 The movement is younger - the first food bank
started in 1981 in Edmonton, Alberta, <strong>and</strong> then
rapidly proliferated in an ad-hoc manner. In 1989 the
Canadian Association of Food Banks (CAFB) was
formed. Membership of CAFB steadily rose, reaching
193 in 1999, serving about 80% of Canada's food
from the food banks to around 2000 agencies, mainly
food pantries. Food banks tend to be church,
community or union based. 55 There are also schemes
around the country that redistribute perishable foods
