Cut-through traffic prohibited near S. Eatherton, Wild Horse Creek roads
By JESSICA MESZAROS
At its July 9 meeting, the Wildwood City
Council gave first and second readings to
an ordinance that would ultimately amend
the city’s code of ordinances to further prohibit
cut-through traffic from Wild Horse
Creek and S. Eatherton roads along Monarch
Hills Drive and Lions Head Lane.
The ordinance was brought forward after
review by the city’s Board of Public Safety,
which gave a positive recommendation to
the council.
Both the first and second reading of the
bill passed the council on 12-0 votes to
prohibit cut-through traffic in the area. The
ordinance will be enforced with signage and
police fines. Councilmembers Ray Manton
[Ward 2], Kevin Dillard [Ward 3] and Greg
Stine [Ward 7] were absent. Additionally,
a council seat remains vacant in Ward 6.
Councilmember John Gragnani [Ward 1]
motioned for the second reading of the bill
and received agreement from the council.
The bill is in response to area resident
complaints regarding a surplus of drivers
using the private roadways
and driveways as a cut-through
between Wild Horse Creek
and S. Eatherton roads, while
also bypassing a four-way stop
between the roads.
Multiple residents spoke in
favor of the ordinance.
Lion’s Head resident Terry
Tolen stated that the roads were
unfit to handle the amount of
through-traffic and that the
drivers posed a danger to resident
children and pets.
“They’re really driveways,
they’re not really roads,” Tolen
said. “We have a number of
The entrance to Lions Head Lane off of S. Eatherton Road
homeowners who have pets that walk the
roads, and the way traffic comes through
there, it’s in really unsafe condition.”
Tolen stated that he wanted the ordinance
to be passed as quickly as possible, citing
the roads may also be in need of repair in
their current state.
Monarch Hills resident Matt Witt cited
littering as another reason to prohibit further
traffic.
According to Witt, who has lived in
Monarch Hills since 1993, the amount of
traffic through the area has grown alongside
the development of Chesterfield in
previous decades.
“They just see pavement there and think
it’s a racetrack,” Witt said. “There’s going
[Google Earth photo]
to be an accident. I’ve had neighbors complain
about people throwing food out their
windows and the dogs eating it. A dog actually
just got run over on Wild Horse Creek
Road, so that’s a prime example. My wife
is out there picking up trash, like people’s
lunches and beer bottles, all the time.”
The new law will be enforced by Wildwood
Police. Tickets can be given for
illegally driving through the restricted
neighborhood. Local police also will
review signage options with the city’s
Planning and Public Works Committee to
alert drivers to the restriction. The maximum
allowable fine would be about $225,
which is consistent with rates currently in
place for minor traffic violations.
