Cancer Council is calling on
Queenslanders to show their
support for Daffodil Day in 2018,
by volunteering a few hours of their
time to help save the life of someone
they love.
Cancer Council’s most iconic
fundraising event, Daffodil Day,
will take place on Friday, August 24,
2018 to raise funds for lifesaving
cancer research.
Over the past 20 years, more than
61,000 lives have been saved by
improvements in cancer prevention,
screening and treatment right across
Australia as a result of ongoing
research. With the help of volunteers
To find out more details,
Daffodil Day blooms again
selling daffodils to raise funds, many
more lives will be saved.
Cancer Council Queensland CEO
Ms Chris McMillan encouraged
locals to turn the state yellow and
spread hope by volunteering on
Daffodil Day this year.
“Daffodil Day is one of
Queensland’s most iconic events,
bringing hope and joy into the lives
of locals affected by cancer,” Ms
McMillan said.
“The daffodil is the international
symbol of hope – with every daffodil
sold, we can invest in research that
will give hope to Queenslanders
every minute, every hour, every day.
Updates from the
Toowoomba Region
Council Meetings
The next meetings of Council’s Standing
Committees will be held on 14 and 15 August
commencing at 9am. The next Ordinary
Meeting of Council will be held on 21 August
commencing at 10am. All meetings are at City
Hall, 541 Ruthven St, Toowoomba.
National Tree Day
Plant a tree and help grow a forest! Come
along to the National Tree Day planting at
Thiess Park, 76 Luck Street, Toowoomba,
29 July, 8.30am – 11.30am. RSVP to
info@tr.qld.gov.au or call 131 872.
Mort Street Temporary Closure
A section of Mort Street between Thackeray
St and Hogg St will be temporarily closed
from 8 July - 22 July to allow the installation
of stormwater services south from the Mort
St-Hogg St intersection. The works cannot
be done under traffic due to the location
and depth of the trenching works. Traffic
will be detoured via Hogg/Holberton/North
Streets or Griffiths/Ruthven/North or Jellicoe
Streets. Local access will be maintained for
northbound traffic through to Thackeray St
and also for businesses and properties in the
section between Thackeray St and Hogg St
but not for through traffic.
“This year we’re seeking around
1200 people to volunteer their time
to sell thousands of daffodils from
300 sites across the state.
“Whether you can volunteer
for a few hours, or a full day, your
contribution will help us raise vital
funds that can be invested back into
research. While cancer research
has made some extraordinary
breakthroughs over the years, with
treatments improving all the time,
there are still cancers with low
survival rates and limited treatment
options. One Queenslander is still
diagnosed with cancer every 20
minutes, more than 27,000 people
each year. Support for Daffodil
Day ensures that we’re investing
in cutting-edge, lifesaving research
that will bring a cancer free future
closer.”
This year Daffodil Day celebrates
32 years, with Cancer Council
Queensland aiming to raise more
than $1 million from the initiative.
“We want to encourage everyone
to get involved in Daffodil Day, and
know that their involvement could
save the life of someone they love,”
Ms McMillan said.
Picnic Point burn
Toowoomba Regional Council
is planning a fuel reduction burn in
areas of the Picnic Point parkland on
Toowoomba’s eastern escarpment in
conjunction with Queensland Fire
and Emergency Services. Council
officers and QFES officers are
scheduled to start a controlled burn
this week at Picnic Point, conditions
permitting.
Cr Joe Ramia said a final
decision to burn will be made on the
morning of July 16. If conditions
are unfavourable the burn would be
delayed until later in the week.
Cr Ramia said the controlled
burn would be contained in Council
property and was scheduled to take
up to five days.
“Low rainfall in the past 12
months has meant vegetation is
dry enough to burn and the low
winter temperatures will result in
cool burns, which are preferred
to help protect the surrounding
environment,” Cr Ramia said.
“It is important to seize the
chance to conduct these cool burns
to reduce fuel loads in the coming
weeks to lower the risk of wildfires
later in the warmer months.
“Council has notified landholders
in the area immediately around the
bushland park.
“Walking tracks such as the
Firetail Walk, Fantail Walk and
Pardalote Trail will be closed
to the public and will be signed
accordingly.
“Depending on the wind
speed and direction, residents in
surrounding areas are advised to
be aware of smoke in the area,
which could settle due to the cold
conditions at night and early in the
morning.
Our singer at the Proms concerts
Meringandan soprano Sarah
Talbot will be on stage at the
Royal Albert Hall in London
later this month and in early
August for the famous Proms
Concerts.
Before she moved to the UK
in 2016, Sarah, the elder daughter
of Paul and Penny Talbot of
Meringandan West, had been
involved in Toowoomba Choral
Society and Empire Theatre performances
since 2008.
The Promenade Concerts
called the Proms is an annual
music festival held daily, over
eight weeks at various venues in
London.
Concerts are mainly orchestral
classical music celebrating
and showcasing composers of
historical renown or of great
achievement.
Proms concerts have been
played since 1895, at the Royal
Albert Hall.
Sarah said many consider the
Proms season an important musical
event, the epitome of classical
music.
Orchestras from around the
world often come to play.
Rehearsals are under way for
Sarah’s first concert on July 22,
which will feature Mahler’s 8th
Symphony with the London
Symphony Chorus and the BBC
National Orchestra of Wales.
This will be followed on August
7 by Brahm’s Requiem
with the BBC Symphony Cho-
Engineering Hair & Beauty
Award winning Salon and Stylists
Mia’s Offer
rus, and then on August 18 will
be a Prom Concert conducted by
Sir Simon Rattle.
It is already sold out and will
feature Ravel’s ‘L’Enfant et les
Sortilèges’ with the London
Symphony Chorus and the London
Symphony Orchestra.
Sarah, who has been teaching
science in London while pursuing
her singing career, plans to
return to Australia in mid-December
and will be completing a
Bachelor of Creative Arts (Music)
at the University of Southern
Council to approve draft Highfields
town centre plan
The Central Highfields
Master Plan is set to be adopted
by Toowoomba Regional
Council today, Tuesday, July
17, following a sometimes
difficult year with the process
of convincing residents of its
intentions.
The process started a
year ago when the council
presented a plan for the town
centre, plus a plan for the
opening up many cul-de-sacs
in the “old” Highfields area,
and adding a new road to link
the New England Highway
near Highfields State Primary
School through the residential
area, through the Kuhls Road
sports fields to Clarke Road
and the Highfields Village
Shopping Centre.
A protest meeting of about
300 residents in the Cultural
Centre took the council
representatives by surprise
because at least 90 per cent of
the people were opposed to the
council plans.
The council then deferred
consideration of the design
of the Highfields town
centre, and agreed that any
future consideration involve
early engagement with the
Highfields community.
The council implemented
a staged consultation process
which sought to identify
community values and a vision
for the Central Highfields area.
The council prepared three
master plan options, and, two
months ago, presented the
community with a draft master
plan based on community
feedback.
It is this draft plan that
the council’s Planning and
Development Committee
considered last week, and
recommended that Council
adopt the plan.
A catalyst in being able
to actively plan for a town
centre design occurred late
last year when Council acted
on a proposal by Cr Paul
Antonio that Council buy 19ha
of land from developer Clive
Berghofer.
This land, bounded by
O’Brien Road, Highfields
Road, and Clarke Road, is
opposite the Highfields Village
Shopping Centre and was the
site of a stock feed mill.
Council has listed nine
refinements to the draft plan,
which were asked for by
community members during
recent consultations.
The Council decided not to
include the majority of these
refinements to the design.
Because the council owns
the central Highfields land,
it will be able to decide how
and when it is developed, and
the next stage of the project
will be structure planning,
when detailed plans will be
produced.
OAKEY NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS PICTORIAL
Women at the centre of NAIDOC celebration
NAIDOC Week 2018 celebrated the
invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander women have made, and
continue to make, to communities, families, and
to the nation.
As pillars of society, Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander women play active and significant
roles at the community, local, state and national
levels.
As leaders, trailblazers, politicians, activists
and social change advocates, they have fought
and continue to fight, for justice, equal rights,
rights to country, for law and justice, access to
education, employment and to maintain and
celebrate indigenous culture, language, music
and art.
They continue to influence as doctors,
lawyers, teachers, electricians, chefs, nurses,
architects, rangers, emergency and defence
personnel, writers, volunteers, chief executive
officers, actors, singer songwriters, journalists,
entrepreneurs, media personalities, board
members, accountants, academics, sporting
icons and Olympians, the list goes on.
They are mothers, elders, grandmothers,
aunties, sisters and daughters.
Sadly, Indigenous women’s role in our
cultural, social and political survival has
often been invisible, unsung or diminished. -
Contributed.
The Coalition Government
is always looking for ways
to support regional and rural
communities, and this month
saw the announcement of
major projects under round
two of the government’s
$200 million Building
Better Regions Fund –
Infrastructure Projects
Stream.
I am pleased to say that
the Groom electorate did not
miss out.
Our community was
successful in attracting $4.8
million under BBRF for the
RSPCA’s new Toowoomba
Animal Care Campus.
This wonderful new
facility, which they hope to
have up and running within
12 months, will be able to
house up to 200 animals and
provide a whole new range
of services and options to
care for animals in need.
Of course, there will also
be more opportunities for
families and individuals
to provide a new home
for these animals through
the RSPCAs pet adoption
program.
Toowoomba’s Cerebral
Palsy League disability
Advertisement
Around Groom with McVeigh
services hub will also
undergo renovations after it
was successful in attracting
just over $20,000 in funding.
The renovation will create
extra space for learning
programs for adults with
disability.
I am very proud to see
these two important local
organisations receive support
under the Builder Better
Regions Fund. When we
work together it is amazing
what we can achieve.
The two successful
projects in our patch, are
amongst 136 projects across
regional and rural Australia
announced under round two
of the BBRF Infrastructure
Projects Stream this month
– with a total project value
$459 million.
Lower taxes for workers
The Turnbull Government has
delivered income tax relief for all
Australian workers.
Member for Groom John
McVeigh said that by passing
the Coalition’s Personal Income
Tax plan through the Parliament,
the Government has ensured all
Australians paying tax will be better
off. They will be paying less tax, and
will be rewarded for their hard work
both now and into the future.
“Taxes in Australia will now be
lower, fairer and simpler. 62,478
people and their families in our
electorate of Groom will benefit
from tax relief of up to $530 in
2018-19,” Member for Groom Dr
John McVeigh said.
“This is a win for all working
Australians who want to get ahead.
You will have the certainty that
when you earn more, get a pay rise
or work more hours, you won’t face
ever-increasing tax rates,” he said.
“Under our plan, 94 per cent of
Australian workers will not face
higher marginal tax rate of more
• Tax relief for middle and low
income earners now. In 2018-19,
over 10 million Australians will
get tax relief, with 4.4 million
Australians receiving the full $530
benefit.
• Lifting tax brackets, to protect
Australians from the impact of
‘bracket creep’, taking the $87,000
tax threshold to $90,000 in 2018-19
and then to $120,000 in 2022-23.
Tax relief provided under the
USQ celebrates role of Aboriginal and Torrres Strait nurses
The 2018 NAIDOC Week theme, “‘Because
of her, we can,” reverberates throughout
the University of Southern Queensland as it
honours Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
women and the significant role they have
played in Australian communities.
For Toowoomba-based lecturer, researcher
and author Raelene Ward, the journey to
NAIDOC 2018 from her hometown of
Cunnamulla has been filled with hard work
and sisterhood.
“There are goose bumps on my arms as I
think about the company of women who will
feature at these events. I’m honoured to be
part of that tradition,” Mrs Ward said.
She will join organiser Associate Professor
Odette Best, Professor Tracey Bunda, Dr
Kathryn Gilbey and Aboriginal activist
Professor Gracelyn Smallwood at a panel
discussion at USQ Springfield.
It follows a ‘NAIDOC - Honouring Elder
Professionals of Nursing and Midwifery’
event at USQ Ipswich on July 9.
“I hold these women in such high regard.
It has been people like Professor Smallwood
who have lobbied for better conditions and
responsibilities for our community,” Mrs
Ward said.
“I’ll certainly grow from their knowledge,
their experience and their support.”
Mrs Ward has spent her time at USQ
imparting expertise honed by her work as
a registered nurse and practice manager in
Aboriginal Health.
Her contributions to textbook Yatdjuligin:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nursing
and Midwifery Care helped to attract
accolades from the prestigious Educational
Publishing Awards.
“We’ve recently produced a second
edition, an extended version, which is used
in our current nursing program at USQ as
Mr McVEIGH
Bracket creep protection
from 2022-23 by taking the $37,000
tax threshold to $41,000, and lifting
the low income tax offset to $645.
• Ensuring more Australians pay
less tax by making personal taxes
simpler, removing an entire tax
bracket, that will mean around 94
per cent of taxpayers are projected
to face a tax rate of 32.5 per cent or
less.
“In contrast to the Labor Party, our
plan is not about creating winners
and losers. We are not putting up
taxes on some Australians to pay for
tax relief for other Australians,” Dr
McVeigh said.
“Under the Government’s
legislated plan, the tax system
works for all Australians.”
National lamington day
This Saturday, July 21, Australians
around the country will stop
and pause to mark the coming of age
of an Australian classic, the humble
lamington. For National Lamington
Day, this Australian icon has gone
gourmet to cater to the changing
tastes of Australians.
The sweet treat has been
delighting Australian tastebuds for
more than 100 years, and now sees
flavours like jaffa, lemon, raspberry
and passionfruit as some of the most
popular.
“While the classic chocolate
lamington will always be a firm
favourite, consumers today are
taking a new bite from a traditional
favourite, and we’ve seen demand
for flavours like jaffa soar,” says
Dia Sadikay, Sales and Marketing
Manager, Susan Day Cakes.
“This iconic cake has stood the
test of time for over 100 years, and
now these new flavours have meant
that it will remain on Australian
tables for many more years to come.
“We’ve even seen savoury
lamingtons served with bacon, so
who knows what the next lamington
craze will be,” Dia says.
well other nursing programs throughout
Australia,” she said.
Mrs Ward’s own story starts in south
west Queensland, as a Cunnamulla student
dreaming of becoming a nurse.
“I found healthcare to be a place where
I could excel and also give back to the
Aboriginal community in some way.
“That was my passion,” she said.
“Since then, I’ve brought my gained
knowledge into university life to pass on to
our future generations of nurses.
“Among my greatest achievements is being
able to mentor Aboriginal health workers who
then became registered nurses themselves,
and also helping to embed Indigenous
perspectives in curriculum as we teach upand-coming
health professionals.”
NAIDOC Week is held in July each year
and is an opportunity to celebrate the history,
culture and achievements of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The lamington cake was first
made in Toowoomba in 1900, most
likely for the wife of Queensland’s
eighth governor, Lady May
Lamington.
Made by either the Lamingtons’
well credentialed French patisserie
chef, Armand Galland, or well
known Brisbane cookery teacher
Amy Schauer, regarded as the
Nigella Lawson of her time,
the sponge cake was dipped in
chocolate and liberally sprinkled
with coconut.
Lord and Lady Lamington were
said to be so impressed by the cake,
that it was regularly requested at
Lamington House.
For the first time in 117 years,
lamingtons were briefly off the
menu at Old Government House in
Brisbane, however demand has seen
it recently bought back to the menu.
In celebration of National
Lamington Day, a range of
lamington flavours, including classic
chocolate, jaffa and raspberry, can
be purchased from Coles stores
nationally.
Painting day at Argyle Homestead
Artists of Crows Nest members
and friends were recently treated
to a painting day at Ross and Julie
Smith’s Argyle Homestead.
The weather was not quite perfect
for outdoor work but most
found a sheltered spot and captured
their chosen vista with camera and
brush.
The inspiration material varied
widely and if only a small percentage
of the number of photos taken
on the day ever make it as a painting
there will be enough to fill an art
gallery dedicated to Argyle.
During the pen and wash workshop
in June, local artist Bill Morton
shared his tips for using watercolour
as ink and applying it with
differing strokes from a dip pen.
The resulting sketches were a
surprise to most who had not used
this particular technique previously.
Bill was generous with his
knowledge and shared pointers on
colour and composition throughout
the session.
COMMUNITY CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE
CHAIR’S SUMMARY
Chair’s summary
The Lockyer Valley Community Consultative Committee
(the committee) held its third meeting in Forest Hill on
Monday 25 June 2018.
Eleven of the 14 members of the committee attended, as
well as two invited guests from Gowrie Junction
and Calvert. There were 52 members of the public
in attendance.
ARTC provided an update on the Gowrie to Helidon and Helidon to Calvert
projects, including:
the current status of technical investigations and feasibility design, particularly
in relation to the technical review of alignment, flooding assessments and level
crossings
upcoming geotechnical investigations, environmental studies and the Social
Impact Assessment
the community feedback received during consultation sessions in May.
The key topics of discussion related to the alignment and how this was being
assessed and finalised, the proposed location of crossing loops on the H2C
alignment, as well as the methodology for flood modelling.
The committee expressed the view that the crossing loops should be located
outside of townships to minimise impact on residential areas in the Lockyer Valley.
The committee, and observers in attendance, provided a summary of community
concerns raised in relation to crossing loops, consultation activities that have
occurred, the use of the Collaborative Map system and the lack of promotion of
the Social Impact Assessment survey.
A member of the committee presented on the history of flood events in Forest
Hill and nearby areas and the relevant design standards and legislation that he
considered should be taken into account as part of flood studies for Inland Rail.
Another member presented about a proposed change to the Inland Rail alignment
to avoid impact on agricultural land in the Lockyer Valley and considerations
around the existing rail line and the potential impact on flooding.
The committee passed a number of motions during the meeting, including:
Extending the closing date of the Social Impact Assessment community survey
for an additional six weeks, from the current closing date of 1 July 2018.
Request for ARTC engineers to meet with engineers engaged by Forest Hill
committee members for the purposes of handing over flood data and research.
Request for meeting between Inland Rail CEO and engineers and Minister
for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey, Federal Member for Wright Scott
In the New Testament in the
Holy Bible we read in Paul’s
letter to the Galatians 5 - 22: “But
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, long-suffering, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
self-control. Against such there is
no law.”
Those words are like an oasis in
the desert, as far as this world is
concerned. Where do we find such
fruit in the world around us?
Well, I don’t intend to go into
statistics of all that is wrong with the
world. Any half-intelligent person
would be foolish to say the world is
getting a better place.
Nevertheless, we in the free
By TONY FREEAR Prison Fellowship
world as it stands, still have access
to such beautiful words, such as we
find in the Bible that believers call
the Word of God.
This is the same God who created
a world full of beauty. One only has
to look at nature to prove that.
The Spirit spoken of in His word
is called the Holy Spirit.
When God’s Son left this world
physically He left us this beautiful
Spirit.
We can access this Spirit in our
own lives personally by believing in
His Son, Lord Jesus Christ whose
blood was shed on the cruel cross on
Calvary some 2000 years ago.
When we answer the call as
believers we are able to walk in that
Spirit!
Think how good God is!
He not only gave us His Son to
die for our sin, (separation from
God) but He gave us His wonderful
nine fruits and the power to enact
them - to give to the wold the very
things it needs: love, joy, peace etc.
This very witness that would keep
jails empty, fix broken marriages,
feed the poor and homeless.
Why, with such wonderful gifts
to be had, would one not call on the
blessed name of Jesus, to save them
and transform them into beautiful
people, walking through this world
clothed, baptised in the Holy Spirit.
Toowoomba-based company Earthlife
knows and understands these
struggles and have developed simple
solutions with 100 per cent Natural
minerals and humates that help toughen
and condition plants to resist pests
and deliver nutrient-dense fruit and
vegetables while creating a sustainable
and contaminant free soil environment
Combining an action of first breaking
the water-repellent crust that
forms on all soil types, then conditioning
the soil, and finally creating a
pool of nutrients in that soil, Earthlife
microbial rock mineral products restore
essential minerals and biology
to help create a landscape that allows
the plants in the garden to grow as
they are meant to, rather than relying
on us to get them to grow.
Less watering is required for upkeep,
fewer chemicals are needed,
and the garden shed need no longer
be cluttered with different products
for different conditions or different
plants.
Most of the advice given regarding
garden health and maintenance revolves
around composting, mulching
and both soluble and slow-release fertilising.
No mention is ever made of minerals
and the most important of roles
that they perform. Combined with the
necessary microbes, the minerals in
the soil are the foundation for everything
else to work.
With a high mineral content everything
else added to the garden can
work better and more efficiently.
With only a few applications of
Earthlife products the plants and pastures
will begin to look after themselves
leaving more time to focus on
enjoying our own lives.
Work starts on lifestyle village at Crows Nest
Earthworks have started on the Parklands
Lifestyle Village development in Crows Nest.
The project, to be constructed in seven
stages, will include 181 house sites with
building planned to start in 2019.
The first stage will include 16 home sites,
two display homes and community centre
with swimming pool, bowls green and productive
garden.
It has been designed as a retirement estate
by the developers B. and P. Woodhead, D. and
K. Haskings and M. N. Vogler adjacent to the
master planned Parklands Estate.
They believe the Village will provide a
high standard of affordable new dwellings
along with community facilities which will
allow the residents to enjoy an active and engaged
lifestyle.
A selection of home styles would be available,
including two or three bedrooms with
car accommodation. David Haskings said
they were trying to make the homes as affordable
as possible and anticipated that prices
would start from $295,000.
Residents will own their home and pay a
weekly site rental that provides exclusive
access to all community facilities and the
on-going maintenance of the village.
Eligible residents may be entitled to receive
Commonwealth rental assistance.
Mr Haskings said the earthworks and construction
of dwellings and the community
centre would be undertaken using local builders
and other contractors.
The Village will be developed on an eight
hectare site which will be bordered by a tree
corridor, lake and wet lands.
The site is part of the overall Parklands Estate
which was bought by the developers in
1992 and over the years has seen the development
of over 150 residential lots and the
construction of 130 homes.
The developers, as long term local residents,
hope the project will provide an economic
boost to Crows Nest as well as an enjoyable
lifestyle for new Village residents.
Council toughens rules for biosecurity on private property
Toowoomba Regional
Council is in the process
of adopting tougher rules
to deal with landholders
who are not controlling
declared and noxious
weeds and feral animals.
Council today
(Tuesday, July 17) is
expected to adopt a
recommendation permitting
council officers
to enter a property for
biosecurity purposes, even
if the land owner said “no”
to a Council request.
Last week, the Council’s
Environment and
Community Committee
recommended these rules
be strengthened.
A report to the Council
Environment and
Community Committee
said the new rules would
help it meet its legislative
obligations with respect
of the Biosecurity Act
2014, and would facilitate
the entry of council pest
management officers onto
properties to carry out
surveillance programs.
Council wants to ensure
that landholders are
meeting their individual
obligations of managing
plant and animal pests.
Notice to a landholder
that an officer wishes to
enter his property, must
still be given.
While Council officers
will conduct surveillance
for weeds and feral
animals across the
Toowoomba Region, in
2018-19, they will give
priority to two areas near
Pittsworth, and one in
the Charlton/Kingsthorpe
area.
Council’s principal
conservation and pest
management officer Mark
Ready said pests were a
growing issue, and African
Boxthorne and Tree Pear
were major pests.
He said in the north
(Crows Nest and Cooyar)
lantana was now endemic
and grew on most
properties and on the
roads, and less effort was
put into its control.
Mayor Paul Antonio
said tree pear (not to be
confused with prickly
pear) was a big problem in
many areas, and Harrissa
Cactus was also becoming
a major problem.
He said Harrissa Cactus
was grown at the Western
Creek homestead west
of Millmerran, to protect
the homestead, and it has
spread to many locations.
Council was told
that prickly pear was
generally controlled by
the cactoblastis insect, but
it did not attack the tree
pear.
Cr Antonio said the
State Government seemed
to have dropped the
ball with regard to pest
management, and was
slowly withdrawing from
pest control programs.
He said State
Forest areas have lost
experienced staff, and
suggested the council
should seek talks with the
State Government about
the management of its
land.
Mr Ready said Council
officers did not routinely
inspect State Government
land and National Parks
(which can be a refuge for
feral animals and harbour
pest plants).
“But we can now
issue notices on the State
Government,” he said.
He suggested the Local
Government Association
might be able to assist
in getting the State
Government to better
manage pests on its road
and rail reserves.
Ag Dept admission
live-ex permit
invalid
The Federal Department of Agriculture has admitted
that decisions granting a permit to Emanuel Exports to
export 58,000 Australian sheep to the Middle East in
June were made unlawfully.
In the course of preparing for the highly-anticipated
Federal Court trial, brought on by Animals Australia,
the Department has conceded that the export permit
it granted to Emanuel Exports was invalid due to the
official granting the permit not having the delegated
authority to do so.
“This admission of legal error by the Department
heightens existing concerns about their ability to
regulate the live export trade,” said Animals Australia’s
Legal Counsel, Shatha Hamade.
“That a Department currently under review could
allow 58,000 sheep to be exported on the basis of a
legally-flawed export permit decision adds to their
litany of regulatory failures.”
Animals Australia was to argue a number of
significant legal grounds in this case, including that the
required animal welfare standards cannot be met during
live sheep voyages to the Middle East in the Northern
summer months, and thus, that this export permit should
not have been granted.
“Animals Australia continues to believe that required
animal welfare standards cannot be met on sheep
shipments during the Northern summer. As such,
we will not hesitate to challenge other Department
decisions that we believe are not compliant with the
regulatory regime. ”
FARMING
Cattle prices firm, supply
plentiful for the moment
By MILES NOLLER
The cattle sale at the Crows Nest
dip yards maintained firm prices with a
smaller yarding last Saturday.
There were just 130 head of mainly
younger cattle in the offering, but even
though most were in the five to 10
months old category, it was suggested the
total offering averaged about $100 a head
better than recent sales in other places.
Selling agent principal Rick Zeller
said among the best was a pen of
Droughtmaster steers, six to eight
months old, from Anduramba. The 15
head of steers in the pen sold for $725 a
head which was about $3.20 a kg.
Mr Zeller, who conducts a sale at the
dip yards just north of Crows Nest every
two weeks, rain, hail or shine, said steers
at the moment were not cheap.
Steers were in a strong market,
although heifers were sometimes harder
to place, he said.
Mr Zeller agreed there could be a
shortage of cattle in a few months should
rain fall in Spring.
But at the moment feedlots were
“chock-a-block.”
Every day the big feedlots were
sending cattle to processors, and they
were able to get replacement feeder
cattle.
Even Rick Zeller’s livestock business,
which was a smaller operation than some,
was able to supply a number of decks of
feeder cattle to feedlots each week.
Mr Zeller was able to draw cattle from
a wide area beyond the Crows Nest and
Darling Downs area.
This complemented the fortnightly
auction at the dip yards which was able to
supply younger cattle for those wanting
to grow steers and heifers to the feeder
stage.
The Rick Zeller team auctions a pen of 15 Droughtmaster steers
for $725/head. The six to eight month old steers were offered by
Crystal Stark of Anduramba.
Auctioneer RICK ZELLER
Drawing cattle from a wide area.
Reserved barley, sorghum and straw helps Haden lot feeder
Lot feeder Mark
Genrich is pleased he
was able to store grain
and straw from past
years for his operation
at Haden.
On Satuday he
bought 16 heifers in
three lots at the Rick
Zeller sale at the Crows
Nest dip yard, to replace
a draught sold for
processing.
Mr Genrich said
his farm received
25mm of rain 10 days
ago in a storm, and it
has freshened up the
kikuyu, Rhodes and
couch pastures, and will
help oats that has just
been planted.
However, he is now
feeding barley that
was harvested in 2016,
sorghum harvested in
2017, and straw that
was put away in 2015.
Mr Genrich said he
bought heifers because
they suited the market
he is supplying.
He bought seven
Hereford/Hereford
cross heifers for $565/
head, four Limousin
cross heifers for $580/
head, and five black
weaner heifers for $555/
head.
He thinks that should
the dry conditions
continue, there could be
a shortage of fat cattle
in three to four months,
and he is hoping he will
have enough feed to
seen him through.
Mr Genrich recently
went on a beef industry
tour of Kentucky in the
USA and Brazil and
Chile in South America.
He said he saw large
enterprises, with some
that were high tech, but
there were many that
were technologically
backward, and
employed many people.
Unskilled workers in
Brazil were paid about
$3/hour. Truck drivers
received $5/hour.
HIGH COUNTRY HERALD - JULY 17, 2018 - 17

Eagles juniors in national title win
Two Highfields Eagles junior rugby league players
were in the under 15s championship winning
Queensland team at the National Secondary School
Championships earlier this month.
Blake Cesari, left, and Xavier Va’a had an outstanding
carnival and topped off their solid performances with a
grand final win over NSW in Mackay.
Va’a captained the winning Queensland team and
was unlucky to miss out on making the Australian merit
team, an achievement earned by his team mate Cesari.
Both boys play for the under 15s Eagles team after
Va’a recently joined the club moving from Dalby.
Cesari has been playing with the Eagles since under
Randall second to nation’s best
Chloe Randall, Cabarlah, finished second in the Garmin 4km Junior Dash at the 40th annual
Gold Coast marathon on Saturday, June 30. Randall, 14, finished with a time of 13:33, placing
behind Imogen Stewart of Sydney who set a course record of 12:48. There were more than
Low hauls at Chinchilla Weir
CABARLAH: The June trip
was to Chinchilla Weir with this
being the annual competition between
Cabarlah, Chinchilla and
Taroom.
All members who attended
put in a solid effort on the water.
Saturday saw beautiful weather
in comparison, to previous
years quite mild. One club member
did, however, help the local
economy by ducking in to town
and buying himself an electric
blanket.
The sausage sizzle was well
attended with the Chinchilla ladies
generously supplying desserts
and potato bake.
Gary also supplied a trailer
full of firewood for us throughout
the weekend which, along
with the use of the ski club
grounds, is greatly appreciated.
Plenty of carp removed for
the weekend but the Yellowbelly
were harder to find.
Those that did were all good
size though.
Chinchilla won the shield
against Cabarlah and we retained
the shield against Taroom.
With the low numbers caught,
the scores were close across the
board.
New rugby social comp
The Toowoomba Social Rugby Association has
launched a Friday night Social Rugby competition
played at Toowoomba’s Gold Park.
For well over 100 years Darling Downs players
have enjoyed spending Saturday throwing on a jersey
to participate in the game they play in heaven, but it
could be about to be a lot easier.
The newly formed, centrally based competition
promises to make the sport more convenient for those
with work and/or family commitments.
The inaugural season will feature six local teams
competing in an eight-week competition kicking off
in late September. Providing great value-for-money,
the registration price of just $160 includes a personalised
jersey and shorts, free sausage sizzles and an
end of year awards night.
TSRA president Doug Allen said the Downs
Rugby affiliated competition was about giving
ex-players and casual fans a chance to get on the field
for a run in a short, sharp and affordable competition.
Online sign-ups are now open where players can
nominate as individuals and be put in a team.
During the sign-on process players can enter details
such as preferred team mates, preferred club and
the name they would like printed on their jersey.
All players of any skill level will be welcome to
play in the competition.
Downs Rugby general manager Mitchell Simpson
yesterday confirmed the support of the governing
body saying, “We imagine to see many old heads
come back to Rugby through the social rugby season,
but we also hope it introduces new faces to the sport”
The TSRA 2018 season will run for eight weeks
with round one on Friday, September 21, with the
grand final on Friday, November 9.
Customer Recommends CN Store
My husband and I recently needed
a storage facility in the Highfields
area and much to our dismay there
was none available that met our requirements.
We decided to look at Crows Nest
as a viable alternative and were
very impressed at what was on offer
through Hampton Real Estate.
CNStore had everything we were
looking for. Secure, ample all weather
access, 24 hour electronic surveillance,
high visibility frontage, safe,
clean and reasonably priced.
Very happy with our choice of the
CNStore facility and very happy with
the professionalism and courtesy of
the staff at Hampton Real Estate.
