As well know gearbox is one of
the most critical, as well as expen鄄
sive, part in the wind turbine with
gearbox. It is essential for the suc鄄
cess in the wind turbine supply to
select reliable, well -performing
qualified gearboxes. Nordex, as a
renowned, serious and conscien鄄
tious WEC supplier, implement a
strict and comprehensive process
for qualifying his gearbox suppliers.
The process is applicable and to be
followed without deviation in the
Nordex group all over the world and
for all kinds of turbine type.
Central Engineering of Nordex
in Germany, which is regarded as
one of the most competent engineer鄄
ing teams in the wind turbine sup鄄
plier branch, is responsible for cre鄄
ating all technical specifications for
gearboxes, including load specifica鄄
tions, and solely responsible for
qualifying gearbox suppliers in the
world so that there is only one stan鄄
dard inside Nordex.
As the first step of supplier se鄄
lection Engineering, together with
Purchasing and Quality, will screen
the potential suppliers in the market
based on the supply market intelli鄄
gence and work out a short list.
Then the three teams will work to鄄
gether closely to conduct apre-au鄄
dit on the potential suppliers in the
short list to fix the target suppliers,

with whom Nordex might cooperate,
considering the engineering compe鄄
tence, production capability, man鄄
agement and some other relevant
criteria. As the next step aconfiden鄄
tiality agreement will be signed by
Nordex and the potential suppliers
and the related specification/draw鄄
ings will be provided to the suppli鄄
ers. Nordex request suppliers to
supply products in compliance with
the technical specifications. Devia鄄
tions are allowed only by mutual
discussion and confirmation.
Normally there are 3 stages to
fully quality agearbox supplier: pro鄄
totype, zero-series production and
series production. At the beginning
Nordex will order 2 gearboxes as
prototype. During this stage all tech鄄
nical requirements are to be dis鄄
cussed and clarified. The supplier
has to submit all necessary docu鄄
ments and calculations, including
quality inspection reports and FEM
calculation. The prototype is subject
to prototype workshop test accord鄄
ing to Nordex test specification, in鄄
cluding sound and vibration test.
The prototype can be accepted only
if the test results meet Nordex re鄄
quirement. Furthermore, the gearbox
is subject GL certifying and has to
be GL-certified.
In case of successful prototype
test and complete documents the
prototype is allowed to undergo field
test. The field test takes at least one
year or certain operation hours. Dur鄄
ing prototype test an inspection is
made regularly, as well as CMS, oil
sample tests and endoscope in鄄
spection. After at least one year field
operation the prototype will be de鄄
mounted from the turbine and will be
disassembled in the supplier's work鄄
shop for thorough inspection, in鄄
cluding bearing inspection. De鄄
pending on the inspection results
Nordex will judge if we can go to the
next stage: zero series. For zero se鄄
ries the order quantity is normally in
the range 10 -20 to verify the pro鄄
duction quality. At this stage the
production process is under careful
supervision by Nordex and field op鄄
eration is also monitored in detail by
Nordex. The release for series pro鄄
duction is given only when the gear鄄
box quality is proved stable. There鄄
fore the whole process would take at
least 2.5 years.
Through the above meticulous
rounds of testing and approval pro鄄
cess, Nordex realizes its thorough
quality control on WTG key compo鄄
nents like gearbox; furthermore, it爷 s
globally uniformed process, without
any exception. In this way, Nordex
can supply its customers with high-
quality and high reliability wind tur鄄
bines with confidence.
