That Summer Feeling!
Welcome to the seventh issue of Breeze! We hope
you’ve had a wonderful 2018 so far, and wish
you and your loved ones a blessed year ahead.
We are excited to publish this issue in the
midst of the World Cup, where we have
some very special promotions for our
guests who love football.
In this issue, we delve into summer; a time
for festivals, the beach, the sun, and mostly
fun. But how are the summer months here in the
Maldives? In the cover story, Leesha Haneef explores the trends of summer in a tropical
destination like the Maldives, how the season is celebrated here, and what it feels to be
here during summer. Mohamed Jinah Sameer makes a visit to the capital island of Kaafu
Atoll, which is famous for its world-class surf breaks. Thulusdhoo is an island not only
famous for its sights and sounds but also Raalhu Edhuru, the surf school, working to
instil a love for surfing.
Looking at our selection for our local cuisine, experience and eco story segments;
Fathimath Sham’aa looks at some of the drinks, snacks and cuisines made from Screw
Pine (locally known as Kashikeyo), Rafil Mohamed takes us on a journey about Vadhaa
Dhuhvun (trolling) teaching us the methods and techniques employed by our ancestors,
as Maasha Adam tells us about the White Tern (Dhon dheeni)—white angelic birds that
soar the skies beyond the equator.
Our writer Mohamed Jinah Sameer also has a retelling of a popular folk story told since
generations past, of girl who survives an encounter with Minika Dhaitha (an old lady
who, in Maldivian folklore, eats misbehaving children), as Ahmed Afruh Rasheed delves
into the history pages in search of the queens who ruled the Maldives for centuries. We
also look at the coral stone buildings that are standing today, which are a testament to
the architectural marvels made possible by our ancestors.
Something that will fascinate you is the types of sharks that swim the waters of the
Maldives, and as Rafil Mohamed explains, it is good to know their breeding grounds,
habits, and how they find food. Malasa Mohamed has a story about the coconut palm,
which has much to offer and is abundant with edibles and material for numerous uses; in
addition to many other interesting articles.
