Answering the call of duty
Zuma Beach
lifeguards to be
among 8 honorees
at event next month
Staff Report
Four Malibu lifeguards
and one former Malibu lifeguard
are to be honored at
the International Surf Festival’s
Lifeguard Medal of
Valor dinner on Aug. 1.
Retired Lifeguard Capt.
Dan Atkins, Ocean Lifeguard
Specialist Tucker
Hopkins, Rescue Boat
Capt. Chris Lallone, Capt.
Patrick O’Neill and Ocean
Lifeguard Joe Rickabaugh
will be among the eight
LA County Fire Department
ocean lifeguards who
are to be honored for their
achievements.
Atkins, who became a
lifeguard in 1973 and retired
37 years later while
working as a captain at
Zuma, is to receive this
year’s Lifetime Achievement
Award.
Atkins also served as
president of the LA County
Lifeguard Association,
where “he was instrumental
in the integration of the
Lifeguard Operation into
the LA County Fire Department
in 1994 thereby solidifying
the public safety
mission of the lifeguards,”
ISF said in its release.
“LACoLA also was involved
in the transfer of
title of the state beaches to
the county, thereby ensuring
continuity of lifeguard
service and beachgoer safety
throughout LA County,”
the release continues.
Hopkins, Lallone and
O’Neill aided in a June 24,
2017 rescue of two swimmers
who were caught in
rip currents which pulled
them 150-200 yards offshore
of Zuma Beach.
Hopkins, along with Ocean
Lifeguard Joe Everett
swam to the victims, one
of whom was struggling to
stay on the surface.
“Upon contact with the
second victim, Hopkins
tried unsuccessfully to get
him to follow directions
and take the rescue can,”
a release from ISF details.
“At great peril to his
own safety Hopkins bearhugged
the delirious, incoherent
and uncooperative
swimmer and swam toward
the rescue boat. Hopkins
was able to get the swimmer
onto the deck of Baywatch
Malibu as a result of
the skillful placement of the
rescue boat by its captain.”
That captain, Lallone,
is to receive a Distinguished
Service Award, as
is O’Neill.
The victim was revived
and complained of chest
pain.
“The decision was made
to transport the victim to
shore, and a rescue water
craft was dispatched
to the boat,” the release
details. “As a result of the
teamwork, training and
experience of the Lallone
and O’Neill, the victim
survived and made a fullrecovery.”
Hopkins is to receive a
Medal of Valor.
“Hopkins’ ocean knowledge,
physical fitness and
quick, decisive action ensured
the swimmer would
make a full-recovery,” the
release states.
Rickabaugh, a current
Zuma Beach lifeguard, was
involved in a surfer’s rescue
at nearby County Line
Beach and also is to receive
a Medal of Valor. Just a
couple months ago, on May
24, Rickabaugh, though offduty,
aided an unconscious
surfer at the Ventura beach.
Rickabaugh, with the help
of nearby surfers, hoisted
the surfer onto a surfboard
and helped him to shore.
The victim, upon regaining
consciousness, reportedly
said he had no feeling or
movement in his arms and
legs.
“Rickabaugh provided
appropriate medical treatment
until the arrival of
paramedics,” the release
details. “He also assisted in
the extrication of the surfer
off the beach to awaiting
responders. Rickabaugh’s
quick-response and outstanding
ocean skills enabled
him to return the
victim to shore in the safest
manner.”
The remaining honorees
are as follows: Capt. Brandon
Chapman, of Venice
Beach (Distinguished Service
Medal); Ocean Lifeguard
Specialist Greg Crum,
of Manhattan Beach (Distinguished
Service Medal);
and Ocean Lifeguard Ignacio
Pagliaro, of Manhattan
Beach (Distinguished Service
Medal).
“We are delighted to recognize
these individuals
who demonstrated extraordinary
acts of bravery,” said
Rob McGowan, president
of the ISF. “They rose to the
challenge, and their heroic
acts are the embodiment of
going above and beyond the
call of duty.”
