Orland Township strolls back to
the 1950s with Sock Hop party
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
The 1950s saw letterman
jackets and poodle skirts at
the height of fashion, while
the jukebox was filled with
music from Elvis Presley,
Buddy Holly and The Platters.
On Thursday, July 12,
Orland Township transported
folks back to this booming
era with its 1950s Sock
Hop dinner and dance at the
Orland Chateau.
The annual event is a favorite
among attendees and
Orland Township staff alike.
“I think this dance is the
most fun, because it brings
people back to the ’50s and
the music is a lot of fun,” explained
Marie Ryan, Orland
Township’s senior services
coordinator. “People like to
dress up in the style of the
’50s and bring it all back.
It’s fun music, fun times and
good memories for everybody,
so it’s all positives.
“We have a lot of good
dancers, too.”
Orland Park residents
Holly and Dominic Tocci
have been attending and volunteering
at Orland Township
events for many years,
and they love that the Sock
Hop captures the essence of
the ’50s.
“The music is wonderful
— and you can understand
what they’re saying — and
the various dances like The
Stroll, The Jitterbug and the
Hula-Hoop contests are all
wonderful,” Holly said.
“And the artists,” Dominic
added. “It all started with
Elvis and Buddy Holly —
guys who brought class into
music — and everybody had
a great time. That’s how we
grew up. We always remember
going to dances. That’s
Orland veteran: Honor Flight ‘one
of the most fantastic experiences’
Fred Hammar
served in Air Force
from 1953-1957
Bill Jones, Editor
Orland Park’s Fred Hammar
could probably tell 50
good stories about his Honor
Flight Chicago trip July
11 to Washington, D.C. But
he would prefer not to.
And it is not that the Air
Force veteran did not love
the trip; it is just that it was
filled with so many pleasant
surprises that he does not
want to spoil it for any other
veterans in the area who
might take it.
“Sometimes, I think it
would be better to not tell
people about it … but you
just can’t help but tell people
about it,” he said Friday,
July 13, after having a couple
of days to reflect on the
experience.
Hammar, who served with
the Air Force from 1953-
1957 and narrowly missed
combat in Korea because the
armistice was signed roughly
six months into his service,
started as a mechanic
after he volunteered to enlist
with a few others.
“We thought we were going
to be drafted, and I had
a connection with the Air
Force,” Hammar said, noting
his father served with the
Army Air Corps.
The armistice was signed
right after his basic training.
Hammar went on to headquarters
squadron supply.
He served another four years
in the reserves after his time
with the Air Force was up.
He said save for eight
World War II veterans,
most members of the Honor
Flight in which he took part
served during the Korean
War. Ages ranged from 81
to 96, with 88 the average.
But regardless of what conflict
or branch, they bonded
“immediately,” though they
generally did not speak to
one another of their service,
Hammar said.
“You think back on what
you did go through,” Hammar
said.
Honor Flight Chicago
provides trips to Washington,
D.C., to veterans free
of charge, thanks in large
part to volunteers. Hammar
said they visited the Lincoln,
World War II, Korean and
Vietnam memorials, as well
as the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy
Center National Air and
Space Museum. They even
received a police escort to
the memorials, with volunteer
help at every turn.
“It’s something no one can
imagine,” he said of the day
Honor Flight Chicago puts
together. “It is, by far, one of
the most fantastic experiences
you would want to have
in a lifetime. You become a
hero for a day.”
When veterans returned
to Chicago Midway International
Chicago on their charter
flight, they were greeted
by family, the AFFI Honor
Guard Pipes and Drums, and
Gov. Bruce Rauner. Among
those waiting for Hammar
was his wife, Joyce, who
said everything was so “energetic
and patriotic.”
“It was awesome,” she
said. “I couldn’t rave about
it enough.”
She said she knew of her
husband’s service, but they
met after that time and do
not talk about it a lot. But it
was something special for
her to see the faces of the
veterans light up when they
As Fred Hammar, of Orland Park, returns with Honor Flight Chicago on July 11 to Chicago
Midway International Airport, he is welcomed home by his granddaughter Lauren Haggerty,
of Tinley Park. photos by Mary Compton/22nd Century Media
Honor Flight Chicago trip to Washington, D.C.
were greeted at the airport,
and there was a feeling of
unity in the room.
“The camaraderie was everywhere,”
she said.
Hammar said it is a sight
and experience he will not
soon forget.
“It’s incredible,” he said.
“To be treated in that manner
in today’s conflicted society
is really incredible.”

From July 10
Orland Park man dead after allegedly eluding police
T.J. Kremer III, Contributing
Editor
An Orland Park man died
July 10 after his vehicle
ended up in a ditch late in
the evening of July 9 on the
north side of LaPorte Road
in Mokena, according to a
press release from the Will
County Sheriff’s Office.
Michael B. Anderson, 45,
was transported to Silver
Cross Hospital’s emergency
room, where he was pronounced
deceased at 12:02
a.m. July 10, according to
a press release issued the
same day by the Will County
Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy performed
that day noted the cause
of death as multiple injuries
due to a single-vehicle
crash at LaPorte Road and
114th Place in Frankfort
Township, according to the
Coroner’s Office. The final
manner of death is to be
determined by the coroner
after toxicology and medical
reports are completed,
according to the release.
Frankfort police were
following a vehicle they attempted
to stop for speeding,
according to the release
from the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies reportedly
attempted to assist;
however, Frankfort police
advised that they were no
longer following the vehicle
but gave the description as a
white Chevy Impala.
While on routine patrol
in the area of Route 30
and Schoolhouse Road, a
deputy reportedly spotted
the offending vehicle heading
westbound on Route
30. The deputy turned on
his emergency lights, but
the driver, later identified
as Anderson, refused to
stop, according to the release.
Anderson reportedly
continued northbound on
Schoolhouse approaching
Francis Road, attempted
to turn west onto Francis
but spun out and continued
eastbound on Francis. The
deputy then turned off his
emergency lights, stopped
following the driver and
cleared the stop, police said.
A short time later, a different
sheriff’s deputy observed
a vehicle wrecked
in the ditch on the north
side of LaPorte Road, near
East Brightway Road in
Mokena, according to the
Sheriff’s Office. The report
states that the Mokena Fire
Protection District arrived
on scene and extricated Anderson
from the vehicle.
Initial reports indicate
that Anderson was traveling
westbound on LaPorte
when he lost control of his
vehicle while crossing the
railroad tracks. The vehicle
struck a guardrail on the
north side of LaPorte and
broke free from its supports,
and the vehicle came to rest
in the ditch, police said.
According to the report,
open alcohol was found
in the Chevy Impala at the
time of the accident. Anderson
had active warrants out
of Cook County for larceny
and violating probation.
The Chevy Impala was
not Anderson’s vehicle, according
to police.
Police Reports
Woman allegedly meets with friend, drives her to parking lot to fight her
Johneka Latrice Williams,
23, of 18433 Torrence Ave.
in Lansing, was charged
June 19 with battery after
she allegedly struck a
24-year-old woman she
knew twice outside of Orland
Square Mall. The victim
was left with a bloody
upper lip, a bump on her
forehead and a bump on the
back of her head, and her
left elbow hurt, police said.
The incident reportedly
started at Dave & Buster’s,
49 Orland Square Drive.
The victim received a text
from Williams that she
wanted to meet and talk, according
to the report. Williams
then arrived in a 2007
Chevrolet Cobalt, and the
victim got in the front passenger’s
seat.
Williams reportedly
drove to the mall, parked
in the lot and told the victim
she was going to fight
her because Williams was
upset with the woman. Williams
exited the vehicle, but
the other woman stayed inside
it and locked her door
police said. But Williams
allegedly went back to the
driver’s door, opened it and
dragged the woman out of
the vehicle by grabbing her
hair and pulling.
Once outside, Williams
got on top of the woman on
the ground and punched her
twice, according to police.
The victim did not fight
back but told her to stop,
according to the report. One
other person reportedly witnessed
the incident and tried
to stop it.
After the altercation, Williams
got back in the vehicle
and drove away, police
said. Lansing police reportedly
took her into custody
at her residence after she
allegedly refused to come
to the police station when
contacted.
June 27
• Jennifer L. Carriveau, 34,
of 2022 N. Newlane Ave.
in Chicago, and Jason C.
Betancourt, 39, of 1256 St.
Charles Drive in Lockport,
each were charged with one
count apiece of possession
of a controlled substance
and possession of a narcotic
instrument after police reportedly
stopped a 1994
Toyota Camry in which
they were riding in the 7000
block of 159th Street.
The vehicle was traveling
faster than 50 mph in a
40 mph zone, police said.
Betancourt, a passenger in
the vehicle, had a “significant”
criminal history for
larceny and drug offenses,
according to the report.
Carriveau, another passenger,
reportedly had four
active warrants for her arrest:
two from Cook County
for failure to appear on retail
theft charges, one from
Kane County for failure to
appear on a possession of a
controlled substance charge
and another from Kane
County for failure to appear
on a driving while licence
revoked charge.
Police found hypodermic
syringes in a backpack
owned by Betancourt, according
to the report. He
also had a bag in his underwear
that contained a substance
that field tested positive
for heroin weighing 1.2
grams, police said.
Carriveau’s purse contained
hypodermic syringes
and a charred tin cooker,
with two of the syringes
containing blood, according
to police. It also reportedly
contained five strips of Suboxone
without a perscription.
Carriveau additionally
was charged with obstructing
identification after she
initially gave police a false
name and date of birth, as
well as issued a warning for
failure to wear a seat belt.
The driver was issued a
warning for speeding and
released from the scene.
June 20
• Jesse Thomas Czyz, 20,
of 214 Madison St. in Joliet,
was charged with aggravated
unlawful use of a
weapon, possession of drug
paraphernalia and unlawful
possession of ammunition
without a FOID card, and
cited with failure to wear
a seat belt, after police reportedly
found a loaded
revolver, ammunition and
three samurai swords in a
1996 Lexus ES 300 he allegedly
was driving near
143rd Street and 108th Avenue.
He was spotted near
143rd Street and West Avenue
driving without wearing
a seat belt, police said of the
reason for the stop. Police
spotted a wooden bat on the
passenger’s side floorboard
with the knob next to the
gear shift box, according to
the report. Police reportedly
discovered 27 .22-caliber
rounds of ammunition in a
headphones case near the
center console armrest storage
area of the vehicle, and
in another headphones case
nearby two spent .22-caliber
rounds and a metal smoking
pipe with burnt cannabis
residue. Four live rounds
of .22-caliber ammunition
were found under the driver’s
seat, along with a pistol
holster, and a .22-caliber
revolver loaded with eight
rounds of live ammunition
was found under the front,
passenger’s-side seat, not
in a case but next to a cloth
holster on the floorboard,
police said. It appeared
someone tried to remove
the serial number on the
gun but it was still visible,
according the report.
Police also reportedly
discovered several rubber
Halloween masks, a megaphone
and three samurai
swords inside the trunk of
the vehicle.
Orland School D135 Board of Education
Tentative budget shows $3 million deficit for FY 2019
Megan Schuller, Freelance Reporter
If Orland School District 135’s tentative
fiscal year 2019 budget stays the
way it is, officials will be looking at a
roughly $3 million deficit
A quick meeting of the D135 Board
of Education was held June 9, outlining
next year’s tentative budget and other
district matters.
District officials are estimating
$82.80 million in expenses from July
1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, which is up
from last year’s budget of $79.56 million.
According to John Bryk, assistant
superintendent for operations and
finance, the budget varies from year
to year mainly because of changes in
salaries.
“Seventy-five percent of our budget
is salary and benefits,” Bryk said.
“That’s the driving force of any school
district’s budget.”
The tentative budget for next year
was approved by a unanimous vote
with estimated revenues of $79.66 million,
according to board documents.
That will leave the district with a deficit
of roughly $3.14 million.
“It’s a really rough prediction right
now with where things are at with the
evidence-based funding model, the
change in the levy structure as well as
taking into consideration the salary increases
that are apart of the collective
bargaining agreements,” Superintendent
DJ Skogsberg said after the meeting.
According to Bryk, the school district’s
fund balance will absorb a deficit
in the projected range. And the district
is still expecting transportation and
grant funds from the State for FY 2018.
“We came in with roughly a $3 million
deficit last year, as well,” Bryk
said. “The $1.7 million dollars [from a
2.1 percent increase to the CPI for the
2017 tax levy] offset an even greater
potential deficit we would have had.”
Skogsberg added, “As it stands right
now, we’re looking to have additional
compensation coming through. $1.7
million in the levy and an increase in
our transportation reimbursement because
of the cost between the previous
contract and our current one.”
Transportation
The contract to which Skogsberg referred
was with Student Transportation
of America, which was dissolved in
2016 after the company “did not live up
to the district’s standards,” according to
Bryk. The district put the contract up
for bid two years ago, and the previous
contractor, American Bus Company,
won the bid back.
The district noted transportation issues
under Student Transportation of
America, including multiple late dropoffs
and pickups during the year the
company serviced the district, Bryk
said.
Bryk added that while the new contract
cost more, the district will receive
more money from the State because of
that expense.
Pro-Life Action League demonstrates at 159th and LaGrange
Bill Jones, Editor
Motorists traversing one
of Orland Park’s busiest intersections
around lunchtime
July 11 encountered an uncommon
sight.
Lining sidewalks on all
four corners and walking
between cars stopped by
red traffic lights, roughly
20 members of the Chicago-based
Pro-Life Action
League displayed images
and text related to their antiabortion
message and distributed
pamphlets to those
willing to take them at the
intersection of 159th Street
and LaGrange Road.
“We’re here to deliver
bring our message,” said
Eric Scheidler, executive
director of the organization.
“We like to go to different
locations around the city.
… We also like to go places
where we have a good base
of support.”
The Orland Park stop was
one of three on the day in the
southwest suburbs for the
group, which started July 11
in Flossmoor and ended it in
Mokena. And that day was
part of a eight-day “They
Were Our Brothers and Sisters”
tour conducted by the
organization.
The demonstration’s coincided
with the announced
of the retirement of United
States Supreme Court Justice
Anthony Kennedy, which
has reignited national debate
regarding abortion. In a
press release, the group noted
“Kennedy was the swing
vote on abortion, upholding
some restrictions and striking
down others. A more conservative
replacement would
likely open the door to further
restrictions on abortion, even
going so far as to overturn the
1973 ‘Roe v. Wade’ decision
that legalized abortion in all
50 states.”
But Scheidler said “that’s
really more of a coincidence”
that dovetailed with
Pat Kovacs, of Orland Park, holds a sign during the
demonstration.
the league’s yearly plans for
a series of demonstrations,
but the organization pays attention
“to see if there’s an
issue we can play into.”
Pat Kovacs, of Orland
Park, took part in the demonstration
by holding one of
the signs along northbound
LaGrange Road, approaching
159th Street. She noted
she is a member of the Respect
Life Ministry through
St. Michael Catholic Church
in Orland Park and regularly
protests outside the Planned
Parenthood facility in Orland
Park.
“I don’t think a lot of people
even realize we have a
Planned Parenthood office,”
she said of the importance of
demonstrating in her hometown.
She said she thinks restrictions
on abortion have
been “eased too much,” and
she was upset about another
Planned Parenthood facility
that opened recently in
Flossmoor.
“I just can’t believe what
the political atmosphere in
Illinois has done,” she said.
Some passersby made efforts
to show their feelings
about the demonstration.
One woman slowed before
the intersection to yell, “My
body, my choice,” at one of
the women holding a sign.
A motorist held a horn while
waiting to turn left at the intersection.
And demonstrators tried to
interact with traffic, to a degree.
On the northwest corner,
one girl signaled with
Alberta Rael, of Arlington Heights, passed out pamphlets titled “They Were Our Brothers
and Sisters” during a Pro-Life Action League demonstration on July 11 at the intersection
of 159th Street and LaGrange Road in Orland Park. Photos by Bill Jones/22nd Century Media
Signs placed in four directions leading up to 159th Street and LaGrange Road warned
motorists of the demonstration.
her arm in an attempt to get
a semi-truck driver to honk
his horn, while a man gave
motorists a thumbs up while
holding his sign. Demonstrators
generally let the signs
do the talking, though, and
moved from the sidewalks to
clear paths for pedestrians.
“We’ve got great volunteers,
great staff,” Scheidler
said.
The league even posted
warning signs in four directions
leading up to the site,
allowing motorists to take
alternate routes if they preferred,
Scheidler said, noting
the group works with local
authorities when planning
its demonstrations and rarely
encounters problems.
Police said the demonstration
in Orland Park went off
without a hitch.
“We had no issues on
our end as the group exercised
their First Amendment
rights,” Orland Park Police
Cmdr. Tony Farrell wrote in
an email to The Prairie.
“We’re here to bring out
message,” Scheidler said.
“Respect and civility is going
to get us a lot farther than
confrontation.”

Loyola Medicine, Palos
Health first in Illinois to offer
MRI-guided radiation therapy
The Loyola Center for
Cancer Care & Research at
Palos Health South Campus
in Orland Park is the first
center in Illinois — and fifth
in the country — to offer an
MRI-guided radiation therapy
that targets tumors with
millimeter precision.
Called MRIdian Linac, the
FDA-cleared system delivers
radiation precisely to the
tumor, even if body functions
such as breathing cause the
tumor to move during the radiation
treatment. The ultrasharp
beam of radiation minimizes
damage to surrounding
tissue.
The new system enables
clinicians to precisely locate,
target and track the position
and shape of tumors as they
move in the body.
The system uses a machine
called a linear accelerator,
or linac. The accelerator
shoots electrons at
a metal target at nearly the
speed of light, transforming
them into photons.
A beam of high-energy photons
then is precisely aimed
at the tumor, killing cancer
cells.
Traditional linear accelerators
employ CT scans taken
ahead of time to align the tumor
with the radiation beam.
The new system uses MR
imaging, which is far superior
to CT scans in showing
soft tissues. And unlike the
CT scans, the MR imaging
is done during the radiation
session. This allows the clinician
to adapt in real time,
reshaping the radiation beam
to match the patient.
The MRI-guided system
can be used on any solid tumor
and is especially effective
in treating soft tissue tumors
in the pancreas, kidney,
adrenal glands, liver, brain
and central nervous system.
The MRIdian Linac installation
is the result of a
partnership between Loyola
Medicine and Palos Health to
bring renowned oncology expertise,
technology, and coordinated
and collaborative
care to patients in the Chicago’s
southwest suburbs.
As an academic medical
center, the Loyola Center
for Cancer Care & Research
at Palos Health South
Campus will offer patients
access to cancer clinical
trials.
The center offers patients
academic care from an integrated
team of cancer subspecialists,
including boardcertified,
fellowship-trained
medical oncologists, surgical
oncologists, radiation
oncologists and radiologists.
The center is located on
the ground level of a new
52,000-square-foot facility
owned by Palos Health at
15300 West Ave. in Orland
Park.
In addition to cancer care,
Loyola Medicine at Palos
Health South Campus is
to include physician office
space, an outpatient surgery
center and specialty care, including
audiology, diabetes
education, endocrinology,
gastroenterology, gynecology,
hepatology, neurology,
neurosurgery, ophthalmology,
otolaryngology (earnose-throat),
orthopaedics,
pain management, and plastic
and reconstructive surgery.
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Resale shop benefits local animal
shelter
In addition to adopting, volunteering
or donating, locals can add
shopping to the list of things they
can do to help out NAWS animal
rescue in Mokena.
Resale for Rescues opened July
2 on Front Street, and the shelves
are brimming with secondhand
items awaiting a second chance.
The idea of saving things that
someone else did not want and
finding them a new home parallels
the mission of NAWS to find
homes for abandoned or stray animals.
Proceeds from the shop, after
paying for rent and utilities, go
directly to NAWS to support its financial
needs and those of the animals
it brings in.
Many times, the animals NAWS
brings in are in need of medical
attention, in addition to the food,
supplies and regular veterinary
care the animals also will need.
The store takes donations and
sells items such as furniture, clothing,
home goods, shoes, purses and
jewelry. It does not accept large
electronics, such as televisions or
large appliances.
Owner Connie George said the
resale shop has been a dream of
hers for years, but after her 50th
birthday she decided to drop everything
and do it for the animals.
“When we started this, I was volunteering
at NAWS,” George said.
“And this was like my dream ... to
have a resale shop that the profits
would go to for the animals because
they are so unheard. They
have no voice.”
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Historical society replaces stained
glass in old church
It has been an expensive year
for the New Lenox Area Historical
Society.
It started with purchasing the
116-year-old railroad depot last
winter, and the resources spent to
save the structure from being demolished.
Then, there was also the
acquisition of the 119-year-old former
Methodist church after that.
“We depleted our budget this
year, but this is all important to
us,” said Dianne Ross, a member
of the historical society.
In addition to purchasing the
church, located at 112 Church St.,
the restoration efforts are another
expense. Last month, the historical
society repurposed three large
stained-glass windows that were
long overdue for being re-leaded.
The windows have not been releaded
since the church was built
in 1899. Ross said leading lasts 70-
80 years.
Ross hired Cathedral Crafts
Stained Glass Studio to re-lead the
windows, touch-up parts where
there was intricate painting, retrim
the outside, clean and place a
protective covering to protect the
glass.
“The gentlemen who owns the
stained glass studio took one of the
really bad ones out said, ‘I’ve never
seen one this bad,’” Ross said.
Restoring the three windows cost
$43,000, Ross said. The problem is
there are still roughly a dozen windows
that need to be addressed.
“It’s a very expensive project,
so we have to do it as we have the
money,” Ross said. “We did the
first three that were critical. They
had to be done because, otherwise,
we would have lost them, for sure.”
FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION
Umpire situation plays into LW
East, West finales
Things do not always go according
to plan.
They did not for the Lincoln-
Way East baseball team in the summer
state tournament this week.
East coach Eric Brauer planned
to coach in the second game of the
opening day of the regional portion
of the Illinois High School Baseball
Coaches Association Summer
Baseball Tournament on July 9.
Instead, Brauer was pressed into
duty as an umpire for an inning in
a game between Lemont and Lincoln-Way
West.
“That wasn’t in the game plan,”
Brauer said.
But it is what he did as the coach
of the host school. Brauer was
pressed into duty because the home
plate umpire collapsed with one
out in the top of the second inning.
While the ump reportedly never
lost consciousness, he was taken
by ambulance to a local hospital.
After at least a 30-minute delay,
Brauer had to fill in for the umpire
but called balls and strikes from
behind the pitcher. That lasted for
an inning, while a base umpire
changed into his gear to umpire
behind the plate. An accredited
umpire was at the game to watch
his brother play for LW West but
instead served as an umpire for the
rest of the game on the bases.
The good news was that the
original home plate umpire was
released later that evening and
was back out as an umpire in a regional
semifinal game at Lockport
the next morning; however, neither
Lincoln-Way team made it to the
next day.
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Citizens Police Academy promotes
partnership
The Lockport Police Department
is accepting applications for its
annual Citizens Police Academy,
which starts this September and
looks to continue building partnerships
with community members.
The academy is open to anyone
ages 18 and older who either lives,
works or goes to school in Lockport.
Participants are to meet at the
Lockport Police Department, 1212
S. Farrell Road, from 6-9 p.m. every
Monday starting Sept. 10 for
12 weeks.
There are already nine spots
filled of the 16 allotted for the program.
Participants are to not only
get a chance to learn about the
various aspects of the police department
through this interactive
program, but they also are to learn
a lot about the people behind the
badges.
“So this course gives the opportunity
to the citizens of Lockport to
come into our world, I guess you
could say, and get to know us not
as the officers but as the people
who do the job and protect them,”
program coordinator officer Jeren
Szmergalski said. “And it gives
them a little sense of what we go
through as regular people in this
profession, how it affects us, how
it affects our families [and] what
mindset we’re in when we’re out
doing our various jobs.”
Szmergalski said having a relationship
with those in Lockport
helps the officers do their jobs effectively
by putting everyone on
the same team. The citizens of
Lockport are the eyes and ears of
the police department, preventing
crime and helping the officers
solve cases faster, he said.
Vet relishes Honor Flight
Tinley Park’s Jack “Whitey”
Hoffmeister was among roughly
100 veterans greeted with a hero’s
welcome at Chicago’s International
Midway Airport.
Hoffmeister, a longtime resident
nicknamed for his unmistakable
snowy hair, returned from Washington,
D.C., July 11 to a group of
family members and well-wishers,
including Gov. Bruce Rauner, who
thanked the Honor Flight Chicago
veterans returning from their day
trip. Founded in 2008, the nonprofit
provides veterans and one family
member with an all-expenses-paid
day of tribute that features stops at
war memorials and ceremonies of
appreciation.
Growing up in a Rogers Park
orphanage, Hoffmeister started his
career in the United States Navy
back in the early 1950s, serving in
Korea from 1952-1953 before ending
his military service in the U.S.
Marine Corps as a combat corpsman.
“It’s an honor, quite an honor,”
the 86-year-old Korean War veteran
said. “But it’s really for all the
guys who didn’t come back home.”
Those in Tinley Park probably
know Whitey from The Dairy Palace,
a homemade retro ice cream
shop he operates with the help of
some of his 10 grandchildren. He
also used to own and operate Whitey’s
Italian Beef and Sausage, and
later hot dog stands under the same
brand throughout the Chicago
area before purchasing the current
building on 167th Street and Oak
Park Avenue.
“We’ve been in business for 40
years,” Hoffmeister said. “The soft
serve comes from Green Bay, Wisconsin,
and the hard stuff comes
from Hershey, Pennsylvania, so
you know it’s quality.”
Be Greek for a Day adds third day
to annual festival
Over the last five years, Assumption
Greek Orthodox Church’s Be
for the first time this year.
Greeks and non-Greeks alike are
together celebrating the culture.
This year, Be Greek for a Day is
to be held July 20-22, at the church,
15625 S. Bell Road in Homer Glen.
“We just wanted to try to go an
extra day on a Friday to open it up
and try something different,” said
the Rev. Sotirios “Father Sam”
Dimitriou, of Assumption Greek
Orthodox.
Included in the three-day lineup
is live band performances throughout
the weekend. On Friday, the
classic rock band Anthem is to
perform from 7:30-10:30 p.m., and
the Greek band Ormi is to perform
from 5-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
There will be a $10 cover charge
We really should talk
about these swords
BILL JONES
bill@opprairie.com
For better or worse,
because of this job,
there is very little that
shocks me anymore.
I have seen some of the
most wonderful things and
some truly awful stuff. And
while there always will
be new variations across
the spectrum, I can handle
much of what comes my
way nowadays.
And yet, news still has the
ability to surprise me now
and again.
This week, Lockport Legend
Editor Max Lapthorne
received a report regarding
an aggravated assault
charge. It seems a man,
when someone confronted
him about what they perceived
to be his driving too
fast down the block, allegedly
got out of his vehicle,
unsheathed a katana and
asked the other man, not-sokindly,
what he said.
Thankfully, no one was
hurt. The alleged perpetrator
was arrested and his sword
taken into custody along
with him, leaving us to mull
headlines for a story about a
katana-wielding man and a
strange bit of road rage.
Here’s where it gets really
weird, though. (“That
wasn’t the weird part?”
Well, sure, but stick with
me.) I went the next day to
the Orland Park Police Station
to gather The Prairie’s
reports, when I came across
a narrative pertaining to unlawful
use of a weapon. You
will find it in this week’s
blotter (Page 5), though
not up top (that honor went
to a woman who allegedly
texted a friend, picked her
up and then drove her somewhere
to fight her).
A seat belt stop led police
to ammunition, both live
and spent, and a loaded
revolver inside of a vehicle.
But the kicker was that inside
the trunk police found
— I couldn’t make this up
if I tried — three samurai
swords. I texted Max immediately.
“What are the odds?”
“Like, almost 0 percent.”
They say when it rains, it
pours. And sure, that’s just
how things work sometimes.
Maybe I shouldn’t be
shocked by the coincidence.
But on the other hand,
shouldn’t we all be a little
concerned when it’s raining
Japanese swords.
Poll Results
We recently asked on
Twitter, “Do you think
Orland Park officials should
pursue the feasibility of an
Interstate 80 and Wolf Road
interchange?”
Of the 94 votes entered by
the deadline, 54 percent of
voters said “no,” while 46
said “yes.” Of the total, 48
percent said “no” because
they think there is already
easy access to that corridor,
6 percent “no” because the
studies are too expensive,
36 percent “yes” because
they wanted to see more
southwest Orland Park access,
while 10 percent “yes”
because they think it will
help stoke business in that
corridor.
Contributing Columnist
People in my life come and
go,
Some, close friends forever
Some, just acquaintances
And some slip into my daily
life
A constant presence, always
there.
At the restaurants I frequent,
The store where I shop
A neighbor down the street,
The man who walks by
On his daily walk
Our lives cross often
Day in and day out
We only know each other’s
first names,
And often more about each
other
Than some closer friends
Waitresses, busboys
Clerks and crossing guards
Neighbors, friends of
friends
They fix my car, pack my
groceries
Fill my prescriptions and
we talk
I barely notice the bonds
grow
As we share sorrows and
joys
They all add texture, get
woven in,
Silken threads that barely
show
But add sparkle to the tapestry
of my life
We rejoice each time we
meet,
When on my daily errands
And I wonder about them
When they aren’t there
And mourn them when they
are gone
Another may take their
place
And perhaps become a new
thread
But I’ll never forget any of
them
They add to my life;
A fresh view, a smile, a kind
word
I am missing someone
tonight
He welcomed me in, gave
me water and kept my coffee
cup filled
Always a handshake for my
husband
He is a golden thread in my
tapestry
And I will miss him.
Bowden highlights evolution of his work at OPPL
Outreach Services Assistant Shane Peterson (left) learns
about the work of the library’s featured artist in July, James
Bowden.
Peotone artist James
Bowden is not interested in
examining the meaning of
his work. Instead, he prefers
to let his striking abstract designs
speak for themselves.
Rather than hunting for
hidden messages in his creations,
Bowden would preferably
discuss methodology
and how the intersection of
careful planning and intuition
can inspire a compelling
vision.
On Friday, July 13, Orland
Park Public Library patrons
had the opportunity to ask
Bowden about his unique
process at the library’s
monthly Meet the Artist
event.
“Art is pretty unpractical,”
Bowden said before beginning
his presentation. “You
can get a lot of enjoyment
from it, but as far as anything
beyond that, it’s not a
practical thing.
“I just hope people enjoy
[the work]. There’s no meaning
that I try to put into it. If
they find something, fine,
but it’s not literary. It’s all
visual. And it doesn’t have
anything to do with politics,
religion or what have you.”
The true subject of
Bowden’s work is the artist
himself.
“The art is me,” he said.
“It’s intuitive. I do it that
way when I’m making the
plans. I try to develop a tension
between the shapes and
the colors to set up something.
I’m pretty intense. If
it doesn’t have an intensity,
I’m not much interested in
it.”
The Orland Park Public
Library display features a
collection of pieces Bowden
created using acrylic paint
on PVC. Geometric shapes,
negative space, bright colors
and slight textures blend together
to draw in the eye to
each bold yet subtle element.
“I see it as having a lot of
space, and I don’t know that
a lot of people would see
that, so that would be the
subtleness,” he said of one
of the pieces.
Bowden led his Meet the
Artist session as a lecture of
sort, which was not surprising,
as he spent many years
as an art professor. Former
students even came by to
hear him speak, including
Bridgeview resident Sharmon
Heim, who had Bowden
as her student-teacher advisor
when she attended Chicago
State University.
“This is a 46-year reunion
in the making,” she said.
Bowden broke down his
process by showing the
concrete steps he takes in
turning a budding idea into
a final product. Sketching,
enlarging the design with
a projector and applying it
to his PVC canvas are all
stages of his creations. He
also shared a sneak peak at a
new series he is developing
inspired by Celtic knots.
The library’s July exhibit
featuring Bowden’s work
follows a show by fellow
abstract artist Benjamin
Lowder. Outreach services
assistant Shane Peterson
enjoyed seeing how the two
artists’ similar, geometric
approaches yielded much
different results.
In August, the library will
be showcasing a different
style of art with a focus on
still lives.
“Next month we have Mr.
Zach Barnard, who does
oil paintings of everyday
scenes,” Peterson said. “It’s
going to be a much starker
contrast, because the show
will feature still lifes and
recognizable things, as opposed
to the abstract art
of Mr. Bowden and Mr.
Lowder.
“Barnard’s whole idea is
Police: Be aware, prepared for dangerous weather
Submitted by Village of
Orland Park
The Village of Orland
Park utilizes several means
to ensure public safety during
severe weather. The
Orland Park Police Department
monitors the National
Weather Service reports, as
well as information provided
via its weather stations.
A weather station is located
on the roof of the Orland
Park Police Station at
15100 S. Ravinia Ave. Five
weather stations throughout
the village enable the Orland
Park Public Works Department
to remotely monitor
temperature, wind speed
and direction, rainfall, humidity
and barometer.
The Village of Orland
Park maintains 13 outdoor
warning sirens that are activated
if a tornado warning
has been issued for the
Orland Park area. A 3- to
5-minute steady blast means
that the National Weather
Service or a trained weather
spotter has identified a
tornado or an aloft funnel
cloud within 5 miles of the
village.
Five of the village’s
larger parks are equipped
with lightning prediction
systems that measure electrostatic
charges at ground
level and in the atmosphere.
When lightning is within
a 10- to 15-mile radius of
the area, alarm horns and
strobe lights are activated.
Lightning detection systems
are located at the John
Humphrey Sports Complex,
Centennial Park, Schussler
Park, Veterans Park and
Cachey Park.
If the National Weather
Service issues a severe
weather warning for southern
Cook County or northern
Will County, weather
spotters are sent to areas
outside of the village limits
to watch for tornadoes.
These areas outside of
the village boundaries now
include Route 6 and Parker
Road, 159th Street and
Parker Road, and 143rd
Street and Parker Road.
The National Weather
Service will issue a tornado
watch if weather conditions
could produce tornadoes.
This encourages residents
to be aware of the weather,
monitoring the local media
for further information.
Watches are issued by the
National Weather Service
Storm Prediction Center for
counties where tornadoes
may occur. The watch area
is typically large, covering
numerous counties or even
states.
A tornado warning means
that a tornado has been
sighted or indicated by
weather radar, and there is
imminent damage to life
and property. People should
move to an interior room on
the lowest floor of a sturdy
building and avoid windows.
If in a mobile home,
vehicle or outdoors, people
should move to the closest
substantial shelter and protect
themselves from flying
debris.
Warnings are issued by the
National Weather Service local
forecast office. Warnings
typically encompass a smaller
area like the size of a city
or small county that may be
impacted by a tornado identified
by a forecaster on radar
or by a trained weather
spotter or law enforcement
watching the storm.
Sirens activated
• The receipt of a tornado
warning issued by the National
Weather Service indicating
that Orland Park is in
the direct path of an oncoming
tornado.
• A trained weather spotter
confirms a tornado or an
aloft funnel cloud within 5
miles of the village
• A trained weather spotter
confirms severe winds causing
structural damage within
5 miles of the village
• Confirmed severe winds
in excess of 70 mph within
the village
Residents are encouraged
to keep an emergency kit
handy and have a meeting
area or one person to call if
family members are not together
when a storm hits.
Further information about
storm preparedness is available
The Dish
‘Pizza philanthropist’ makes food for good
Chicago Dough Co.
famous for pizza,
being part of the
community
T.J. Kremer III
Contributing Editor
Chicago is famous —
or infamous — for many
things.
It is known as a sports
town. There is the Sears
Tower (sorry, Willis). And,
of course, the food.
And if one were to list the
foods for which the city and
surrounding suburbs were
most famous, pizza would
surely have to be at the top
of that list.
In the south and southwest
suburbs, one small chain has
been building its reputation
for gourmet pizza and distinctive
dining atmosphere
over more than 40 years:
Chicago Dough Co.
The original Chicago
Dough opened in Richton
Park in 1975 under the chain
Pizza Inn. But, after some
disagreements among the
original pair of owners, they
decided to split. And Chicago
Dough was born in 1976,
according to New Lenox location
owner Tim Waters.
The move to focus on
a better quality pizza has
paid off, as Chicago Dough
has become a staple in the
Chicago area, perhaps best
known for its daily lunch
buffets from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.,
Monday-Friday, and 11:30
a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturdays
and Sundays (adults $8.99,
children 12 and younger
$4.49). The buffet features
unlimited trips to the salad
bar, which includes 27 items;
chicken wings; homemade
soup; 6-9 samples of pizza
from the menu at any given
time; as well as seasonal or
trial pizzas not on the menu,
such as the pulled pork pizza
with a glazed cabbage topping,
or chili chicken and
cilantro. Of course, there is
also dessert pizza, topped
with fruit, cinnamon or peanut
butter.
And that is just for lunch.
There is also the twice-aweek
dinner buffet from
4:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays
and Wednesdays (adults
$10.99, children 12 and
younger $4.99). Evening
bar and pizzas, but also include
Italian beef on Mondays
Wednesdays.
Waters said he prides himself
on bringing the best ingredients
to the table. The
bread and dough are made
without any bromated or
bleached flour. The restaurant
buys locally and organically
whenever possible, and
most everything edible is
prepped daily to ensure the
highest level of freshness
Waters said.
But, as good as the food is
at Chicago Dough, it might
be overshadowed by the
good Waters does for New
Lenox on behalf of the restaurant.
Chicago Dough, since its
opening in New Lenox in
2007, has donated free food
to countless number of fundraisers,
events, and even
people and families who
have experienced some sort
of unexpected hardship or
tragedy. Some of the recipients
of Waters’ philanthropy
include St. Jude Catholic
Church, New Lenox
baseball and football, area
schools, and the New Lenox
Fire Protection District.
“If there’s somebody in
this town who has a real
need, we’ll step up and try
to do something for them,”
Waters said. “If you have a
real need, and you’re getting
the short end of the stick, so
to speak, and if a pizza will
Chicago Dough New Lenox owner Tim Waters (left) and chef Ernesto Lopez prepare a pizza
for the daily lunch buffet. Photos by T.J. Kremer III/22nd Century Media
Chicago Dough’s salad bar features 27 items and is included in both lunch and dinner
buffets, or can be added to any meal for $4.99.
help you out, then I’m more
than happy to give you a
pizza.
“I’m just interested in
helping people.”
And at the end of the day,
that sense of civic responsibility
— and the pizza —
is what separates Chicago
Dough from the rest. And
Waters said he is currently
looking for someone to help
him carry that mantle, as
he has been managing and
owning Chicago Dough locations
for 40 years. He said
he is looking for the right
person who wants to carry
on the legacy of a smalltown
pizza place known for
not only serving the best to
its customers but also serves
as a business role-model for
the community.

Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Homes
In Manhattan and Peotone – From the mid-$200’s
New designs are a result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 provide easy access to I-80
nearby train stations and a
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Sandburg looking to be on cutting edge of close shaves
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Senior-to-be Stephanie Faro concentrates on a free throw
in a summer league game in June against Providence
Catholic. PHOTOS BY JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Sandburg’s girls basketball
team finished 11-18
last season and five of those
losses were by five points or
fewer.
If this group, which had
a good chunk of underclassmen
pick up valuable
game experience, would
have won those five contests,
the Eagles would have
been 16-13, which would
have been easier to stomach.
The Eagles used its summer
games to work on several
things and one of them
was to improve on closing
out games.
Third-year coach Nick
Fotopoulos said that a
last-second basket to beat
Thornton and game-winning
free throws in the closing
ticks of a victory over
Joliet Central were some of
the highlights of the summer
campaign.
Another highlight was a
weekend series of games
at the University of Illinois
as the team finished 3-2.
The losses were to Wayne
Memorial, which finished
second in the state in Class
A in Michigan last season
and Incarnate Word, the defending
4A Missouri champion
which was ranked
16th in the nation by USA
Today before the 2017-18
season .
“It was cool,” Fotopoulos
said. “It was good to
see those guys and play
them. At one time we were
up nine against the Michigan
team and the Missouri
game was on an early morning
on Sunday and we
were a little sluggish and
didn’t do too well in that
one and lost by 15. It was
still fun.”
Senior-to-be Natalie Stavropoulos
is back after a campaign
that saw her earn special
mention Class 3A-4A
All-State recognition by the
Illinois Basketball Coaches
Association. Despite suffering
a broken nose in a
game against traditional
power Whitney Young in
a game at Oak Lawn High
School, she still had a
strong summer, according
to her coach.
“She’s a tough kid,” Fotopoulos
said.
Other seniors on the summer
roster were Destiny Antoine,
Courtney Hiler and
Molly Nolan. Eight juniors
and four sophomore also
picked up experience.
The regular season opens
Nov. 13 at the Hinsdale
South Invitational. The Eagles
will play two tournaments
in December, one at
Oak Lawn and another at
Hillcrest.
Sandburg’s Kayla Snaidauf muscles up for a shot in summer play.
Courtney Hiler of Sandburg dribbles to try to get by a Providence Catholic defender during summer action at Thornwood
High School.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
VS FORENCE FREEDOM JULY 20-22
with Natalie Stavropoulos
Natalie Stavropoulos is a
senior-to-be at Sandburg
and plays girls basketball.
Last year, she earned Class
3A-4A special mention
All-State recognition by the
Illinois Basketball Coaches
Association.
VS SCHAUMBURG BOOMERS JULY 27-29
Your sister, Victoria,
had an injury-plagued
senior year at Sandburg
a few seasons ago.
Early in summer camp,
you busted your nose
in a game. Were you
thinking there is some
kind of jinx going on?
I have had such bad luck
at Oak Lawn High School,
last year I had hurt my
knee and this year I broke
my nose, it’s some kind of
curse.
Did you get used
to playing with the
protective wear?
Yes, at first it was very
uncomfortable but it isn’t so
bad now.
If you could play oneon-one
with any player
in the world, who
would it be against?
I’d choose to play Giannis
Antetokounmpo because it’s
cool to see an amazing NBA
player come from Greece.
What is your proudest
moment in basketball?
Earning All-Conference
and an All-State mention last
season.
Are there any
embarrassing moments
you had in the sport?
Breaking my nose has
been one of my most embarrassing
moments, I looked
super funny with a black eye
and crooked nose.
What is your college
situation?
I definitely see myself
playing basketball in college
but I am undecided of where
that may be.
Do you have a favorite
pregame pump-up song?
“Better now” by Post
Malone
Do you have a hero, or
someone you look up
JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
to?
I look up to my mom,
Christina. She is the strongest,
most caring woman
I know and has shaped me
into the person I am today.
Is there something
people don’t know
about you?
I will be a 16-year-old senior
this upcoming school
year because I started school
early as a child. I should be
a junior!
Any superstitions?
I have to wear white
socks, I just feel like I don’t
play as well in any other color
socks.
HOCKEY
A taste of Orland as local stars play in pro hockey league
Sandburg grad Coyne is
the only woman in new
league
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
The Chicago Pro Hockey League
opened play on Wednesday, July 11
with 143 men listed on various rosters.
And one woman.
Sandburg graduate Kendall
Coyne, who earlier this year won
a gold medal for the United States
in women’s hockey in February,
is lone woman in the first-year
league, which featured more than
80 players from the National Hockey
League, the American Hockey
League and the East Coast Hockey
League as well as amateurs from
colleges, junior teams and AAA
programs.
Coyne, 26, had played with and
against boys when she was younger,
so this is not new territory.
“This is tremendous to be a part
of,” Coyne told reporters after her
first game, in which she picked
up an assist. “It’s exciting to see
little girls up there [in the stands]
watching proudly. Women’s hockey
doesn’t always get the exposure...to
be out here was pretty
cool.”
She is not the only player from
the are who will participate in the
league, which will play its games at
MB Ice Arena in Chicago, which is
the Blackhawks’ community rink.
Nine players listed from Orland
Park are a part of the league.
“Knowing there are so many
NHL and pro players who live and
train in Chicago during the offseason,
we felt a summer pro league
with ties to local charities would be
great for the hockey community,”
said Anders Sorensen, player development
coach for the Chicago
Blackhawks and director of player
development with the Chicago
Mission. “Having coached and
worked with a lot of these players
throughout their youth and junior
development years, and now while
they are playing pro hockey, we
Five-sport Special Olympics athlete brings home more gold
JON ZAGHLOUL
Freelance Reporter
With a large crowd packing
the Illinois State University
gymnasium, Colin
Lewis, a Sandburg incoming
junior, did not shy away
from making personal history
at the Special Olympics
Illinois state meet.
During the event’s 50th
anniversary celebration,
Lewis, who competed in
the male 16 deadlift event,
had successfully completed
a 185-pound lift. He knew,
however, that there was
more left in the tank.
“After getting to 185, I
knew I could get to 205, and
possibly more after that,” he
said.
Colin’s confident mindset,
combined with training
in physical education class
and Sandburg’s Special
Olympics program, prompted
a huge feat of strength.
With countless spectators
on edge, Colin accomplished
the unthinkable: a
205-pound deadlift and a
gold medal at the games in
mid-June in Normal.
“It felt so good to take
home that gold medal,” he
said. “The ceremony was
exciting too, because I was
standing in front of everyone,
and there were fireworks
going off...I’ll never
forget it.”
Lewis is no stranger to
the athletic limelight. He
also placed first in deadlift
and bench press during
last year’s Special Olympic
Games. He is halfway to an
attempt to win four golds in
four years in the deadlift.
He also is involved in
hockey, baseball, track and
bowling.
But lifting more than 200
pounds was a huge thrill.
“During the summer, I
do yoga to help with my
balance and breathing,” he
Colin Lewis earned a Special Olympics gold medal for
weightlifting in June.
said. “It also helps me stay
calm when I lift. Once the
school year starts, I’ll be
back in the weight room,
getting ready for next year’s
competitions.”
In addition to weightlifting
and yoga, Lewis
plays hockey for the Chicago
Blackhawks Special
Hockey team. By manning
the center position,
he maintains an important
role on the team, helping to
lead them to continued success.
Through the team’s initiatives,
Lewis skates at the
United Center once per year,
while exchanging meetings
with coach Joel Quenneville,
Brent Seabrook and
Duncan Keith.
“The coaches are nice,
and have helped me come
along as a player,” Lewis
said. “Being a Hawks fan,
it’s been really cool to meet
all of the guys.”
Lewis’s hockey skills also
have garnered awards, as
he earned yet another gold
medal, this time as a part of
the Disabled Hockey Festival
in San Jose, California.
His brothers, one of whom
is attending Ohio State University,
have propelled his
Olympics Illinois state meet in Normal in mid-June. PHOTOS SUBMITTED
athletic interests and involvement
in hockey.
“My brother [Ryan]
played [hockey] for Sandburg
for a couple of years,
but had to quit because he
hurt his back,” Colin said.
“My younger brother [Brendan]
plays for the Vikings
hockey organization. I’m
very close with both of my
brothers, and I love them.”
Although close with his
brothers, Lewis said he is
just as close to the Sandburg
community. He was one of
three athletes to qualify for
the Special Olympic Games
and the only one to attend
the event.
“I’m so happy to call
myself an Eagle,” he said.
“I love the school. I get
straight A’s, and the teachers
are nice and helpful.
My coaches, coach Peggy
[Bryce] and coach [Ramis]
Habboub, are great people.
They know me and my
family very well. They’ve
helped me get to where I am
today.”
Lewis is also a part of
PEOPEL, a physical education
class that mixes special
needs students with other
students looking to pursue a
career path in social services.
He said he has made numerous
friends in the class.
Lewis’s impressive athletic
run, which also includes
competitive biking
and bowling, already is
equipped with an innumerable
amount of honors and
awards. By entering his junior
year of high school,
he still has two more success-laden
years ahead of
him. With the honors that
he has already obtained,
the sky’s the limit for his
athletic prosperity yet to
come.
Simply put, he has no intention
of letting up.

There was a time when
former Tinley Park
resident Larry Butler
was considered by some as
the bad guy in high school
travel, or grassroots, basketball.
In the late 1990s and early
2000s, his Illinois Warriors,
which held some practices in
Tinley Park and Orland Park
over the years, was one of
the best teams in the country,
but he was criticized in some
circles of being a “street
agent” who had too much
power over grade school and
high school kids. His team’s
Nike affiliation and his deep
relationships with some
high-level NCAA Division
I coaches caused critics to
claim he never had children’s
best interests at heart.
Butler doesn’t have the
juice he used to have, but he
still has some influence and
runs an Illinois Spot-Lite
scouting service. And the
guy who people used to look
at as Public Enemy No. 1 in
travel was appalled at what
happened at a July 7 game in
Georgia, when members of
the Chicago-based R.A.W.
Athletics pummeled officials
toward the end of the
contest.
“This morning, we see
streaming all over social media
some local rag-tag popup
club team is involved in a
skirmish with a game official
while out of town,” Butler
tweeted on July 8.
He followed it up with
“Shame on them. Chicago
gets enough negative publicity
without some miscellaneous
group of teens with
aspirations of being hoopers
giving the city a sore eye
with that kinda behavior.”
Say what you want about
Butler back in the day, but
I don’t remember his teams
ever doing anything like this.
The coach of R.A.W.,
Howard Martin, claims the
refs started it, but many on
social media complained
what a dirty team R.A.W. is.
It doesn’t matter who started
it; it became a national embarrassment
for grassroots
basketball, which is a segment
of sports whose pool is
full of cess.
I have a few stories about
the lousy side of travel and
grassroots basketball. But
the most violent incident that
happened in a gym I was in
was when a sophomore player
from St. Louis jumped
into the stands like he was
Superman and punched an
opposing player’s mother in
the jaw. The player was arrested.
The mother returned
that night for a game, and
In 2014, Louisville Magic travel coach Ellis Myles ran onto a court to pull his player off the
court and was given a technical foul. He later berated officials and poured a sports drink
all over the court in protest. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
one look at her and you
knew she wasn’t going to be
eating solid food for months.
The funniest show of
coaching immaturity I saw
came in Milwaukee in 2014,
when Louisville Magic
coach Ellis Myles (a former
player for the University
of Louisville) ran onto the
court to pull his player off
the court. Well, in just about
every level of basketball,
that is not allowed. He was
whistled for a technical foul
for it during a crucial point
toward the end of the game.
He went ballistic.
After his team lost, tournament
officials tried to whisk
him off the court so the
next game could start. After
some more yelling, this dude
poured a red sports drink
all over the court to prove
a point. To this day, I don’t
know what that point was.
Some of the kids on
the 17-U roster of R.A.W.
(which stands for Real
Athletes Work) are from
Homewood-Flossmoor,
Solorio, Dunbar, Leo and
Morgan Park. They were
losing late in a game to
the Houston Raptors, and
witnesses said the Chicago
players were beating up on
one official while he was
lying on the ground. Another
ref got involved in the fracas.
There is some video showing
the ugliness from afar, and
that looked pretty bad.
While I would love to
blame controversial NBA
father and Big Baller Brand
coach LaVar Ball for causing
this, I won’t. But his tirade
against a female referee in
2017 went viral and set a
lousy example for players in
regard to respect for referees.
But he and his players were
allowed back in the tournament
for more games. That’s
the biggest problem. They
should have been thrown out.
The various grassroots
organizations have to come
down hard on those responsible
for this nonsense.
Even those coaches who
pull their teams off the court
long before the game is
over because they are mad
about something should be
suspended or banned.
After watching countless
travel games over the years,
I can say that it’s rare to see
stuff like this happen, but
when it does happen it can’t
be ignored. Maybe if there
is a gold coin to be found
in this sewer of a story, it’s
that this incident will involve
punishment and may deter
further garbage like this from
happening.
Maybe.
LISTEN UP
