The Reverend Sarah Hare writes Dear Friends In the last Village Pump, I told you about our second public consultation for the Parish of Berrington with Betton Strange and this meeting took place on the 11 th June at All Saints Church, and Bishop Alistair (Bishop of Ludlow and Archdeacon) came to the meeting to help our discussions. About 20 people joined us for the meeting and we looked separately at St Margaret’s Church, Betton Strange and All Saint’s Church, Berrington. Whilst we do not wish to be looking at closure for either of these buildings, the support and finance is not forthcoming to keep these buildings open as churches for regular worship and therefore the option of closure does look to be a very real option for both of our churches. While we continue to look at the right option for these beautiful buildings the congregation of Betton Strange Church are planning to hold Heritage Open Days for the church in September (see separate advert) to try and raise the profile of the church. We have agreed to review the situation again at the end of the year and if these open days do not bring forward any fresh interest in this time, then it is likely that we will then move towards the process of closure of the church in Betton Strange. The future of Berrington church is a little more complicated as grants were given for the fabric of the church and these grants run for 10 years and we have not come to the end of this period yet which means that the money could be requested to be returned if the church closed and we would not be in a position to pay this back at this stage. Some initial negotiations have gone on with the grant bodies, but we would need some firm evidence that the money would not be requested back before proceeding towards closure. The route for Berrington does also sadly look to be closure but the time scale here is less clear and as we know more, I will let you know more. I am very grateful to the Church Wardens, PCC and congregations of these churches and those in the community that regularly support these churches. This is not the route that any of us would choose to go down, but without a change in circumstances and finance, it appears that this Parish may in the not too distant future see closure of both of it’s churches. That does not take away the pastoral and missional responsibility that we have for this parish. We know that we will need to look at other ways to do the mission and ministry in this place as we move forward with the route that these two churches may take and Rev Matthew and I remain firmly committed to the people in our Parishes.
